O2 Nails Characteristics - Functions

Lateral nail fold : This is the skin surrounding the nails

- Functions of the lateral nail fold:(1) Fixing of nails(2) (Protection from infection by microorganisms or bacteria(3) Protection of not yet grown nails

- Nail plate: The entirety of nails, consists of keratin, which is made of proteins. When enlarged as can be seen on the left, the nail tissues consist of thin crosses.

- Characteristics of the nail plate: 1) When the nails grow slowly or become damaged easily, it means that the necessary nutrients for cell creation is lacking.2) It protects nail skin.3) It takes about 5 to 6 months for nail beginning from the lunula to com-pletely be replaced.

- Nail bed: This is the skin underneath the nails, and consists of corium and cellular cuticle

- Lunula: It is the section of the nail which is shaped like the half moon.

- Functions of the lunula:1) This is where the cells created in the nail matrix is stored.2) The nail cells stay at the lunula for a while, and are pushed by the newly generated cells to become nails.3) It is known that the larger the area of the lunula, the quicker the growth of nails.

- The functions of the nail matrix:The matrix lies just under the nail roots, and consists of capil-laries, lymph, and nerve tissues. It has the rolde of generation and growth of cells that make nails. When the matrix is dam-aged, the nails will either cease to grow or become deformed.

- Cuticle:The cuticle which covers the top of the lunula underneath the nail is a slightly hard skin tissue which grows.

Case1 - The woman who works with water all the time

Condition1.- Preparation of food, dishwashing, cleaning, etc., keep the housewife’s hands wet all the time. Hands become rough and crumbly, and it has been long since the proteins that create nails have been depleted.
