Use the fol lowing procedure to measure thehelght of each piston above the cyl inder block. l fc learances are not in the acceptable range, inspectthe components for wear or damage.

1. Determine the top center posi t ion of the piston

with a dial indicator assemblY.

3. Measure projection (9) at three places onthe top of the piston. Take an average of thethree measurements in order to determine theprojection. Subtract the projection from theinstal led thickness of the cyl inder head gasket inorder to determine the clearance between thetop of the piston and the cyl inder head.

Instal led thickness of the cyl inoer readgasket . .110 t 0 10 mnr ( .070 t .004 inch)

Each piston has markings which are stamped ontop of the piston. The markings are used to al¡gnthe plston assembly to the camshaft s ide of thecyl inder block,

(2) Piston diameter

Table 9 gives the dimensions for prstons that arestandard, Table 9 also gives the dimensions forpistons that are oversize.

Note: Measure the piston diameter along theperpendicular of the piston pin bore.
