Pre-Processing Phase: In 2010 the City made a strategic decision to expand internal SSO processing capacity using anaerobic digestion (AD). The facility is designed and built on CCI’s technology platform, the BTA® Process. The design capacity is 75,000 metric tonnes of residential and commercial SSO that is curbside collected in the Green Bin Program. The SSO, which is characterized by a high plastic content due to the allowed use of plastic bin liners, is fed directly to the BTA® Hydromechanical Pre-treatment System, which is designed with 3 x BTA® Waste Pulpers and 3 x BTA® Grit Removal Systems.
Conversion Phase: The AD methodology is a wet digestion process in the mesophilic range using 2 x 5,300 m3 digesters that are continuously mixing using compressed biogas. The biogas fuels the boilers to produce the required heat for the facility and the biological processes. Further benefit will accrue to the community in 2017 when a combined heat and power (CHP) cogeneration plant will produce renewable energy for the on-site transfer station and the adjacent City Works yard. The digestate is dewatered using centrifuges and the liquid fraction, which is inherent in the SSO, is reclaimed and reused.
Utilization Phase: More than 96% of the available and digestible organics found in the Green Bin are captured and converted, including the disposable diapers. The digester solids are shipped daily to an off-site composting facility where they are bulked with leaf and yard waste to make a final Class AA compost product that is distributed into the local, higher-value bulk markets. Excess liquids are treated in an on-site waste water treatment plant before discharge to the sewer. The residuals are compacted and shipped daily to the City owned Greenlane landfill facility in the London, Ontario area.
