The devil!” It was in 1897 andsome mountain people from Sauze d’Oulx witnessed ared-faced man with a long white beard descending from theslopes, with long wooden skis attached to his feet. He was aSwiss engineer, Adolf Kind, and the wooden skis were thefirst seen in Italy. Today there are more than a hundredski-lifts and 1500 km of slopes for all levels – as well asalpine skiing, sledges and huskies, telemark skiing and thesnowboarding. For those with more extreme tastes the zonealso caters to ice climbing, free-riding and other similarsports.

THE REGION #THEREGION#

In medieval times the ‘Franchi Pass’ wentthrough the valley – the main route toGaul. Thus many abbeys were constructedon the Via Francigena which rises toMoncenisio. The first one, found justoutside Turin at Rivoli, is Sant’Antonio diRanverso. The preceptory and adjacenthospital were founded in 1186 by UmbertoIII and then entrusted to the Antoniani diVienne priests. These structures were builtfor protection as well as to provide foodand lodging for travellers. Other castles inthe valley were aimed at defending thepeninsula from invaders – of whom therehave been many, from Carlo Magnoonwards. The most striking is undoubtedlythe Forte di Exiles, an extraordinaryexample of military architecture.

Food is important here – you’ll find manyof the best products of Piemontesetraditional mountain cuisine, many ofwhich have been given the mark of quality:salami, cheese (Murianengo, Toma delPiemonte, Raschera, Reblochon delMoncenisio), mushrooms, apples, thepotatoes of Cesana, wine (Cimont),liqueurs made with herbs (Genepy, fromthe mountains of Cesana). And of courseyou cannot leave without sampling thedelicious chocolate, like the famousGianduiotto.

Visitors to this corner of the country willfind that the Valle d’Aosta and Piedmontare quite distinct in character from the rest

of Italy. The long history of geo-politicalpower struggles with their Frenchneighbours and the mountainous alpineenvironment have created a uniqueidentity amongst the inhabitants. Frenchwas the official language in Piedmont onlya century ago, whilst in Aosta, it stillremains the administrative and legallanguage to this day, despite the majorityof people speaking Italian. Add to thisAosta’s autonomy from central governmentand it becomes clear why this area is seenas the most un-Italian part of Italy. This isperhaps most obvious in the gothic stylecastles that dot the landscape of these tworegions. Dating back to the reign of theRoyal House of Savoy, the imposingfortifications set amongst the majesty ofthe mountains, help lend a fairytale air tothe surroundings which is far removedfrom the suave sophistication of the ItalianRiviera and the grandiosity of Rome.

Fortunately this ‘otherness’ doesn’t haveany bearing on the region’s gastronomicstandards which more than hit the heightsexpected of Italian cuisine. Throughout thetwo regions there is a pride in thetraditional dishes that have been passeddown through the ages and this manifestsitself in an abundance of excellentrestaurants. The region also producessome excellent wines that will ensure thatthe connoisseurs amongst you will be wellcatered for.

Sauze d’OulxItalian skiing was born in Sauze d’Oulx.Here in 1897 Adolf Kind, a Swiss engineer,made his first appearance on skis and thentaught the Piedmontese how to organisethe first competitions. Sauze d’Oulx –which hosted the XXth Olympic WinterGames - is a village with a delightful littlecentre of traditional stone and wood built

buildings. It is linked to the Via Lattea(Milky Way), which groups together sixfamous Piedmontese skiing towns:Sestriere, Sansicario, Cesana and Claviereas well as Montgenèvre in France.

Piero Gros – the great rival of GustavoThoeni - was from Sauze. He becameMayor after winning an Olympic Medal anda World Cup.

This “Balcony of the Alps” offers slopes ofall sorts, including slopes for acrobaticsand snowboards.

The area of Sauze d’Oulx is also famousbecause of its eco-system: close to it, inthe Gran Bosco (Great Forest), live 21species of mammals, including deer,roe-bucks, chamois and wolves, more than70 species of nesting birds and 600 typesof flora.

Slope LifeVialattea consists of five Piedmonteseresorts: Sestriere, Sauze d’Oulx,Sansicario, Cesana, Claviere, andMontgenevre in France. It offers 203skiing-connected runs (52 blue, 111 redand 40 black), for a total linear extent of400 km. There are 78 lifts that range froman altitude of 1350m in Cesana to 2800mat Mount Motta, a peak that gives amagnificent view of the surroundingmountains allowing skiers to appreciate thevastness and beauty of the area. There aretwo snowparks, one in Sauze d’Oulx andone in Séstriere.

The one day ticket fare during the winterseason in Via Lattea is €34. You can alsoget a multi-day pass, e.g. a 2-day cardcosts €62 and a weekly card €180.

Downhill skiing, snowboarding andcross-country are the main disciplinestaught in all the ski schools of Via Lattea

In Sauze d’Oulx there are many ski rentalshops where you can get anything youneed. Boots costs around 10 euro/day and40 euro/six days; blades/carving skis costfrom 12 euro (silver) to 25 euro (platinum)a day and from 60 to 114 euro for sixdays. CourmayeurSet in the Aosta Valley with spectacularviews of Monte Bianco, the traditionalalpine village of Courmayeur is one of themost picturesque Italian ski resorts. Therange of skiing options makes it suitablefor all abilities, be it the gentle beginner’sslopes of the Checrouit-Val Veny or themore demanding upper reaches of MonteBianco which are more suited toexperienced skiers. Slope LifeStanding in the shadow of the MonteBianco-Mount Blanc massif, the beautifulalpine resort of Courmayeur offers 100kmof pistes and caters for all levels andabilities. The main hub of the mountain isthe Plan Checrouit where there are runsthat will satisfy those just off the nurseryslopes. However most skiers will use thisas a point in which to access morechallenging runs on the mountain as canbe found at Mount Chetif, Col Cherout andCresta Youla which provide a range of runsfrom the easy meandering to the moretechnical black pistes designed for theexperts. At the top of the range is theCresta d Arp which is strictly for high levelskiers and offers the chance for some goodoff piste guided skiing. However the one tobag is Monte Bianco-Mont Blanc itself,where a three stage cable car takes you tothe dizzy heights of 3353m and from whichyou can ski back to Courmayeur, toChamonix or spend some time with a guideon the glacier. The mountain is serviced by23 lifts.

Ski passes are available from 1 day to 14days. A 1-day pass is €41 and a 6-daypass €195. All passes valid for 6 to 10consecutive days may be used for 2 daysin one of the other ski resorts of the AostaValley, which include the resorts of LaThuile, La Rosière, andChampoluc-Gressoney-Alagna and also

include access to Chamonix (lifts on theFrench side not included).

SestriereTucked amongst the mountains, the highaltitude resort of Sestriere is a safe bet forguaranteed snow cover. Purpose built inthe 1930’s, Sestriere is the capital of theVia Alleta or as it is known to skiaficionados – The Milky Way – a series oflifts that link a number of villages andoffers a combined ski area of 400kmcovering 140 slopes. The skiing caters forall levels of ability from beginner’s slopesto the technically challenging trails thatwere used for the alpine events during the2005/2006 Winter Olympics. Slope LifeHost of the 2005/2006 Winter OlympicAlpine events and capital of the Milky Way,Sestriere is the star around which all theother resorts in the region gravitate. TheMilky Way or the Via Lattea comprises thevillages/resorts of Sestriere, Sauze d’Oulx,Sansicario, Cesana-Claviere and Mont

Genevre (in France), which offer up to400km of pistes and are interlinked by aseries of lifts. Throughout the area thereare runs to suit all levels. HoweverSestriere which stands at 2035m has thebest access and offers the highest (2823m)and most challenging pistes in the areawith Monte Sises providing more expertblack runs. Advanced skiers can also findplenty of challenging off piste action in anaround the region. The MonteMotta/Banchetta Mountains are moresuitable for the intermediate skier, whilstbeginners will be able to frolic on theslopes just above the resort. The resort isserviced by 20 lifts and in order to accessthe rest of the Milky Way take the ColBasset gondola to Sauze d’Olux.

Ski passes range from 1 day to 15 days.The Via Lattea 1 day pass costs €34/6 daypass €180 and includes access to theresorts of; Sestriere, Sauze d’oulx,Sansicario, Cesana, Claviere. Internationalpasses are also available.

From the airport there are four ways to goto Sauze:

1)Take the local shuttle bus to the TorinoPorta Nuova train station (it leaves every30 minutes). Then, take the train to Oulx(1 hour) and from the station the bus toSauze.
