Anointing of the Sick ● Also called extreme unction
● It has sound biblical references (as does our entire religion)
● Who is this for?
○ Sick, dying, before surgery
Anointing of the Sick ● What do we believe it does as Catholics?
○ That through the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests, the entire Church
commends the sick to the suffering and glorified Lord imploring for them relief and salvation.
● Recommended approach:
○ Confession
○ Anointing
○ Viaticum
Lourdes (field trip anyone???)● 1858
○ Young French girl met Our Lady of Lourdes○ First healings
● Most Recent○ Jean-Pierre Bely (1987)○ Serge Francois (2003)○ Sister Moriau (2008)
● Total○ 7,000 Miraculous recoveries○ 70 officially recognized
Lourdes ● International Medical Committee was formed
○ About 30 members○ They basically decided what is a miracle and what isn't based on hard core science
■ 3 stages for examining files ● Declared Cure to the unexpected cure● Unexpected cure to the confirmed cure ● Opinion for recognising an unexpected cure
Small Group Discussions1) Have you heard of or know someone that has experienced a healing miracle?
2) Do you think this is possible in your life and in our world today? Why or why not?
3) Do you know of anyone who has received the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick?
4) How do we deal with the fact that not all prayers for healing are granted?
5) Discuss how you think healing miracles are/would be received by the world today given our advanced medical care
6) What (if anything) would be the application of this knowledge of healing miracles in our future jobs in healthcare?
