EPHESUS
The history of Ephesus goes back to 3000 BC. It is one of the most beatifulancient cities in the world. It was a pilgrimage centre of first Cybele then Artemisand finally the Virgin Mary.
It was the birthplace of the philosopher Heraclitus. Amazons, Greeks, Lydians,Romans and many other civilizations lived and gave traces here. You should notmiss it. And we recommend our private tour of this excellent ancient city with theBasilica of St John, the House of Virgin Mary and the Temple of Artemis.
EPHESUS Archaeological Museum
Ephesus Archaeological Museum is located in Selcuk, which is 70 km away from
Izmir, where Ephesus ancient city is found.
In Ephesus, the works of art dug up between 1867-1905 were transported to theBritish Museum; those from 1905-1923 taken to Vienna. Then Turkish Republic forbadetaking antiques out of the country and founded a museum in Seluk near Ephesus. Itspresent form was given in 1983.
The Ephesus Museum is different from other many museums. It is not designedaccording to chronological order on the contrary it has rooms with a theme. The house of VIRGIN MARY
Located on the top of the "Bulbul" mountain 9 km ahead ofEphesus, the shrineofVirgin Mary enjoys a marvelous atmosphere hidden in the green. It is the placewhere Mary may have spent her last days. Indeed, she may have come in the areatogether with Saint John, who spent several years in the area to spread Christianity. Marypreferred this remote place rather than living in crowded place.
The house is a typical Roman architectural example, entirely made of stones. Inthe 4th century AD, a church, combining her house and grave, has been built. Theoriginal two-stored house, which consisted of an anteroom (where today candles areproposed), bedroom andpraying room (Christian church area) and a room with fireplace(chapel for Muslims). A front kitchen fell into ruins and has been restored in 1940's.Today, only the central part and a room on the right of the altar are open to visitorsFrom there one can understand that this building looks more like a church than a houseAnother interesting place is the "Water of Mary", a source to be found at the exit of thechurch area and where a rather salt water, with curative properties, can be drunk by all.
Paul VI was the first pope to visit this place in the 1960's. Later, in the 1980's,during his visit, Pope John-Paul II declared the Shrine of Virgin Mary has a pilgrimageplace for Christians. It is also visited by Muslims who recognize Mary as the mother ofone of their prophets. Every year, on August 15th a ceremony is organized tocommemorate Mary's Assumption.
How to Go?...The House of Virgin Mary is located on top of Bulbul Mountainapproximately 27km away from Kusadasi. The house may be visited by private car ortaxies, except the tours provided by the travel agencies.

The temple of ARTEMIS
The temple of Artemision is known as one of the Seven Wonders of the Anticworld. It has been built in the areas ofEphesus on a flat area which has over thecenturies turned into a swamp. Today one can only see the ruins of the foundations ofthis marvelous construction of the Hellenistic Age, entirely made of marble and full ofsculptured columns' capitals and shafts. The most beautiful remaining of this temple aretoday exhibited in the London British Museum.
The oldest remaining found date back till the VIth century BC. It was surrounded by36 huge columns, later enlarged upon the orders of the Lydian King, Kreisos, during theVIth century BC. Most of the exhibits in the London British Museum belong to this period.
The new Artemision has been rebuilt in the IInd century BC. Located on top of theprevious one, it had tremendous dimensions: 127 columns of each 17,5 meters high.Unfortunately this one has also been destroyed by fire, reconstructed and againdemolished by earthquakes, rebuilt and at last looted by Goths one year later.
The statue of many-breasted Artemision was the symbol of the temple but also ofabundance, hunting and wild life. The genuine statue of Artemision, removed during thefire, is today exhibited in the Selcuk Museum. Many copies of this statue found duringthe latest excavations date back from the Roman period.
How to go?... Artemision is located 18 km away from Kusadasi, in the entranceofSelcuk. As it is close to Ephesus andThe Basilica of Saint John, it may be a stop onyour excursion. The Basilica of SAINT JOHN
It is believed that the evangelist St. John had spent his last years in the regionaround Ephesus and buried in the southern slope of Ayosolug Hill. Three hundred yearsafter the death of Saint Paul, a small chapel was constructed over the grave in the4th century. The church was changed into a marvelous basilica during the region ofEmperor Justinian (527 -565 AD).
The monumental basilica was in the shape of a cross and was covered with sixdomes. Its construction, being of stone and brick, is an extremely rare find amongst thearchitecture of its time. Raised by two steps and covered with marble, the tomb of St
John was under the central dome, that was once carried by the four columns at thecorners. The columns in the courtyard reveals the monograms of Emperor Justinian andhis wife Theodora. Constructed in the 5th century AD, the baptistery is north of thenave, with its key hole shape. Rampart walls around the church were constructed forprotection from the Arabian attracts in the 7th - 8th centuries AD. The impressive10th century AD frescoes representing St John, Jesus and a Saint, ornament the chapelWith the invasion of Turks, the chapel was used as a mosque in the 14th century;unfortunately Basilica of Saint John became unusable due to the serious earthquake inthe same century.
The excavations around the Basilica of Saint John has been continuing under the
supervision of Ekrem Akurgal since 1973, with the financial supports of George BQuatman.

ISA BEY MOSQUE
IsaBeyMosque is one of the most delicate examples of Seljukian architecture, situated below the basilica of Saint John. The mosque was built by the master Syrian
architecture Ali son of Mushimish al -Damishki, between the years of 1374 and 1375.
The mosque was styled asymmetrically unlike the traditional style, The location ofthe windows , doors and domes were not matched, purposely. In the entrance of themosque, an inscription from the god decorates the doorway. The columns inside thehouse of prayer are from earlier ruins in Ephesus, making an interesting contrast to themosque . The domes are ornamented by turquoise and blue faience, revealing thecharacteristic of Ottoman style. PRIENE
The first establishments in Priene go back till 2000 BC. According to ancientdocuments, these first settlers were the Banians who mixed with the Ionians. In theArchaic period, the city's location may have been nearer to Miletos on the delta of theBuyuk Menderes (Meander). Later the city moved in the direction of the MykaleMountains' slope.
The name "Priene" is thought to have a pre-Greek origin when the Cretan islands''Praisos and Prianson" had relations with Priene. Before becoming one of the 12members of the Ionian Confederation and participating to the "IonianRebellion", Priene had first been a Lydian dominion for several centuries.
As the city had been demolished, its restoration has been planned by the famouscity planner and architect, Hippodamos, who used for the first time the "GratingSystem": all the constructions were turned to the south in order to benefit a maximumof the day light. The roads were crossing perpendicularly to give the best ventilationsystem to the city.
Approx. 283 BC, a border quarrel arose between Priene and the Greek islandSamos. It was only solved one century later when both parties accepted to becomeRoman vassals. Since then, Priene was under control of the Bergamian King, Attalos IIwho was to return the city to the Romans after his death. Due to endless wars and the
alluviums that were invading the city, Priene was worn out and abandoned completely inthe XIIIth century AD.
How to Go?Priene is about 35 km from Kusadasi is worth being visited forits Athena Temple, located on the highest point of the city, the Stadion, the Prytanion, the Temple of Demeter and Persephone, the Bouloterion, the Gymnasium and theAmphitheater. DIDYMA
As a logical continuation, after Priene and Miletos, one goes to Didyma, a famoustemple for its oracles. This temple dedicated to Apollo was the richest and biggest of theIonian temples on Anatolian soil. It was to cover such a vast area, that its constructionlasted more than 150-200 years and yet it was planned to be without ceiling. Again afterthe "Ionian Rebellion", it was to Alexander the Great to order its restoration. On theruins of the VIth century BC temple, a church was built during the Byzantine period.Though the ruins one can see today, are of pre-Christian age.
The temple was famous all over the Greek world for its oracles so that it even
surpassed the reputation of Delphi. The reason for which the harbor of Panamos nearDidyma became very busy and was visited by lots of commanders, ordinary andrespected people, is that they wanted to learn their future from the priests of the templeThe oracle ceremonies were in two steps: the Pithy would first comment the glitters onthe waters of a well and then the priests would translate these into literal and impressivewords.
After the Lade War, many of the priests were to escape from the temple or killedby Alexander the Great and the temple ofDidyma remained an unimportant temple tilthe Roman time.
How to Go?...Didyma is located 75 km south of Kusadasi. There is no direct publictransportation from Kusadasi. To reach Didyma; you may take minibus to Soke, then toDidim from Soke bus station; or a daily tour to Didyma - Priene - Miletos from anyagency in Kusadasi.

MILETOS
Miletos is one of the oldest cities of Ionia, located north ofSoke, about60 km away from
Kusadasi. The city was on the point where the Buyuk Menderes ("Meander") flew into the Aegean Sea.Because of the alluviums,Miletos has been remote several times from sea, which explains that one can
see today different harbors.
Miletos was also the city of many scientists and philosophers such as Thales, AnaximanderHekataios (principle source to Herodotos) and closer to us, Isidorus, the architect of Hagia Sophia in
Istanbul. Miletos had its alphabet recognized by the Greek world as the official Greek alphabet, basis ofthe current Latin alphabet.
In the Xth BC, Miletos has been invaded by Ionians and the city reached its apogee in the VII th andVIth centuries and developed in one of the most significant cities of Ionia. In 494 BC, the Tyran (prince -
governor) of Miletos, Aristagoras, started the "Ionia Rebellion" against the Persians where theycollected some success at first but at the end lost the war. The Persians demolished the city and sent its
habitants to Mesopotamia. In 344 BC, Alexander the Great invaded the city and had its trade redeveloped.
In 200 BC, Miletos became the dominion of the Myceneans, fact that is shown by the style of theceramics in the houses and the city walls. During the Roman Empire, it became an independent city and
later a bishopric at early Christian times. During the Byzantine period Miletos was called "Ania". As othat time, due to geographic and climatic changes, the city completely lost of its importance and was to be
abandoned.
The most important monuments to be seen at Miletos are: the Bath of Faustina, the Delphinion(small temple dedicated to Apollo Delphinion, protector of ships and harbors) and the amphitheater.
How to Go?...Miletos is located 55 km south of Kusadasi. There is no direct public transportation fromKusadasi. To reach Miletos; you may take a daily tour to Didyma - Priene - Miletos from any agency in

PERGAMUM
After the death ofAlexander theGreat, one of his generals who is calledLysimachus chose Pergamum as thedepository for his wealth. He placed ninethousand talents of goldin Pergamum under the guardianship ofPhiletaerus who was his lieutenant. Aftethe death of Lysimachus, Philetaerus tookadvantage of this wealth and founded theindependent dynasty of Attalid Kings whichlater became the centre of Hellenisticcivilization. With the success of the twokings Attalus I and Eumenes II, Pergamumreached the highest point of its powerHowever during those time Rome and the
Hellenistic leaders united. Afterthat Pergamum became a very powerful kingdom by Attalus I including Mysia, Lydia,Caria, Pamphylia and Phrygia. He not only extended the borders but also decorated thecapital city with architectural splendors. Eumenes II improved the city culturally. KingAttalus III bequeathed the territory to the Romans who made the city rich in art andculture poor in politics and economy. The city went through the Arab, Byzantine andfinally the Turkish period in the 14C. In Hellenistic period the ancient city made anintellectual progress with the famous sculpture school and public buildings andmonuments. Also Pergamum played an important role during the reign of the Romans.
The foundation of acropolis in Pergamum depended on social and cultural activities
which we can consider it to be the daily life. Because of this, buildings in Pergamum weredesigned to be used in daily life. More than religion socialization was important as aproof even the temples were one of the meeting places of people where they can join insocial affairs just like other large buildings which were designed for this purposePergamum had the fame to be the first city who showed reaction to the functionalurbanism of Hippodamus as they preferred ornamental urbanism. Acropolis buildingswere built and designed with the aim of impressing the ones viewing the city from thevalley. All buildings except the Trajan Temple were built in the reign of the Hellenisticemperors which are mostly made of andesite and rarely marble.
Heroon in Pergamum was the shrine in which the kings especially Attalus I and
Eumenes II were worshipped. Eumenes II built the Sanctuary of Athena, dedicated tovictory-bringing, in Pergamum which was entered through a propylon. The entrance ofthe Sanctuary is surrounded by three stoas of the Doric order which opens to acourtyard. Athena Temple is located at the corner near the theatre in Doric order as welwhich was built earlier.

APHRODISIAN
Aphrodisias enjoys both an unbelievable historical richness and a beautiful natural scenery where all greentones from poplar to olive trees are present. The city was famous not only as a philosophy and medicine center but aboveall as a school of sculpture: the masterpieces realized there have been spread all over the Roman Empire and found back
in the most popular temples such as in Didyma. Aphrodisias was a Carian town named after the goddess of beauty andlove, Aphrodite, whose origins date back from the Hittite and Phrygian cultures. Lots of Aphrodite's characteristics aresimilar to those of the Ephesus Artemis but cannot be compared with the Greek Aphrodite. Aphrodisias knew her goldenyears during the Roman period as it was located alongside a main trade road. Even after the upcoming of Christians,
Aphrodisias remained an important pagan center. Under the Byzantines, who renamed it "Stavropolis" (Town of theCross), Aphrodisias became the residence of the bishop of Caria. When Aphrodisias had been conquered by the Turks, ireceived its current name "Geyre", most probably a deformation of "Caria". Today Aphrodisias is not only visited for itsbeautiful site but also for its opulent sculpture museum. During the 35 years continuous excavations, the temple of
Aphrodite, the amphitheater, the thermal baths with their inlaid marble floors, the agora and the stadium, one of the bestpreserved and biggest in the world, have been brought to daylight. Aphrodisias was changed to Stayropolis then to Cariawhich became Geyre years after. The ruins which are worth seein in Aphrodisias are listed below:
*The Tetrapylon which is a monumental gateway built in the 2nd century AD during the time of Hadrian,
*The Stadium which could hold 30,000 people,*The Templeof Aphrodite which was originally designed as an Ionic temple but then changed into a church during the
Byzantines,*The Bishop's Residence which is said to have been the residence of the bishops during the Byzantines,*The Odeon which had the seating capacity of 1700,*The BathsofHadrian which were built in the 2nd century during the reign of Hadrian,*The building of the PorticoofTiberius which might have been a gymnasium with a training area,*The Theatre which has the seating capacity of 8000,*The Tetrastoon which used to be a meeting place surrounded by small shops,*The TheatreBaths which have not been completely excavated and*The Sebasteion which used to be a shrine where the king was worshipped.

Kusadasi is a coastal city that traditionally caters to European visitors looking to enjoy the
beach. There are many things to do.
1- top of the list has to be Ephesus- a magnificent 8,000 year old ruin that wasexcavated in recent years. A must see for an insight into Greco-Roman life and themother-fertility cult of Artemis/DIana. Also where Paul preached to the early Christianchurch. While in near Ephesus, go to see the home where the Virgin Mary spent her lastdays, the final days of St John and his basilica, and not to miss seeing the statue of
Artemis in the quaint museum in the town of Selcuk.
2- Pammakkule is a 3 hours away and worth the day trip to see beautiful hot springsterraces, another ruin Hieropolis and then an ancient swimming pool to swim in. Prettydrive East from Pammakkule.
3- Jeep Safari - the Ketchup team. Take a break from the Ruins and go see the NationaPark by going up the mountain. On a fun filled day seeing the volcanic terrainswimming in a clear, fresh water lagoon called the Zeus Cave and finally having a fewmoments to chill and relax on Long Beach.
4- Turkish Bath- Hamami. Quite the experience of a steam, a scrub and then a delightfu
scrub down in bubbles. These are public, so take a swim suit. You can often have an oimassage afterward. Went to two- the first was the Altinsaray HOtel and then also theHoliday Leisure. The Altinsaray was very thorough, but found that the one at HolidayLeisure was much more charming.
5- Dilek National Park. Consider a getaway spending a day at the beach only not thetouristy beaches, but more of a remote beach at the Dilek National Park. Rented a cawhile at Kusadasi, so enjoyed travelling through the park. Loved having a simple lunchin one of the outside vendors, and renting a lounge chair for day of relaxation. Fun wildboars roaming about.
