Greater Johnstown wrestling may be moving down to Class AA this season but they are getting an upgrade with freshman Carnell Andrews. At the 2014 Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Championships Andrews won arguably the toughest weight-class of the Tournament. At 124 lbs. Carnell was able to survive the field that included studs Ryan Vulakh, Caden Mareno, Greg Wert, and A.J. Wilson. Carnell defeated Mareno (3-2) in the semifinals before taking down Vulakh in the finals (3-1). It was not the first time Andrews captured PJW State Gold as he won the 2013 Championship at 115 lbs. in the (11 & 12) division. In 2014 Carnell picked up a FloNationals Championship in the Middle School Division and captured the NHSCA Middle School Nationals Championship. Andrews will have an immediate impact for Greater Johnstown and should adjust well to High School competition. Carnell will make several trips to Hershey and possibly earn multiple medals in Hershey in his career.

After three trips to the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Championships that ended in third place medals Cody Mulligan moved to the top of the podium in 2014 winning the 132 lbs. PJW Junior High State Championship. It was no easy task for Cody who earned a hard-fought (1-0) decision in the State Finals over fellow Top Incoming Freshman Jake Hendricks. Mulligan was also a 2x Champion at the Ohio Tournament of Champions and has earned multiple PAWF State medals in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman. Joining a talented Saegertown program Mulligan will have no shortage of workout partners in the practice room. He will be pushed by 3x PIAA State Medalist Tyler Vath who enters his senior season with a (122-19) career record for the Panthers. Junior Nick Monico is already a 2x PIAA State Medalist in two seasons with Saegertown and Mulligan will benefit greatly from having he and Vath as partners. During his rookie season Mulligan will attempt to do what both Vath and Monico did in their freshman seasons by earning a PIAA State Medal. Don’t be surprised if he succeeds in doing just that.

Francis may be the younger brother of Cumberland Valley star Patrick Duggan but he is definitely not the ‘little’ brother. Francis is a strong and well-built freshman who could see action anywhere from 182 lbs. to 220 lbs. for the Eagles. Duggan will hope to make an immediate impact just as older brother Patrick did during his freshman campaign. One of his top accomplishments of his Youth career was his seventh place medal earned at the USAW Cadet Freestyle National Championship. In the 2014 PAWF State Tournament Duggan won the 195 lbs. State Championship defeating current sophomore Cole Nye (Wyoming Seminary) by technical-fall (12-2). In addition to his PAWF State Championship, Duggan captured the 2014 Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling Junior High State Championship at 182 lbs. downing #36 Isaac Reid (Kiski Area) in the finals (4-2). Francis has improved throughout his career and will flourish greatly from head coach Dave Heckard’s leadership at Cumberland Valley. Duggan should have no issues adjusting to high school wrestling and competing against older opponents in the upper-weights.

Porter is a 3x Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Qualifier who earned his first career State medal in 2014. Competing at 132 lbs. Porter advanced into the championship semifinals where he fell to eventual State Champion #11 Cody Mulligan (3-0). Despite falling again in the consolation semifinals to #32 Neiko Kuntz by fall in (3:48) Denton stormed back in his next match to finish is fifth. Porter will be joining a Wyalusing Valley program that includes middleweights Collin Edsell, a 2013 PIAA State Qualifier, and Justin Haley who was a 30-match winner in 2014. Both will be juniors this season and help Porter transition to high school competition. Overall Porter may not have a stacked resume but don’t count him out as a rookie. Denton should fair well in a tough District 4 and expect him to battle for a spot at States in future seasons.

The third Nazareth Blue Eagle on the list is freshman Mike Madara. Mike will join his older brother and senior Matt Madara this season and add even more talent to an already loaded lightweight group. In 2014 Madara won his first career PJW State Championship capturing 82 lbs. in the Junior High Division. Mike also owns Championships at the MAWA Eastern Nationals, Brute Empire Nationals, and the Dixie Nationals. In 2013 Madara won the District 11 Junior High Tournament and place fourth at the PJW State Championships. As a rookie Madara may be undersized for 106 lbs. but still will have a shot at the high school varsity team. Mike will compete with 2014 PIAA State Qualifier Tyson Klump, fellow freshman Dominic Paar, and returning 106 lbs. starter Garrett Snyder in the Blue Eagle lower weights. Once Madara puts on some mass and stops giving up weight he should be a key asset to Nazareth’s success in the future. Although fans may not become familiar with the name this season, anything is possible, and by the tie his career is over Mike may have earned several District 11 Tournament medals.

It’s almost as if the Lane’s never stop for Southern Columbia Area! For the second season in a row there is a “Lane” family member in the Top Incoming Freshmen with rookie Jaret Lane. Jaret is the younger brother of senior and Lehigh recruit Kent Lane and cousin to sophomore and 2014 PIAA State runner-up Todd Lane. Like his older brother and cousin Jaret is a successful wrestler who will help Southern Columbia in their quest for PIAA State Dual Team Gold in 2015. Jaret enters high school with a long Youth career that includes four (4) trips to the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Championship and two (2) State medals. In 2014 Lane was a PJW State runner-up falling to #45 Mike Madara in the State Finals (2-1). His most impressive accomplishment came in 2014 when Jaret finished in eighth place at the Cadet Nationals competing in Freestyle. The 2x District 4 Junior High Champion will be a slightly undersized rookie at 106 lbs. this season but regardless Jaret will fair well even against the top competition. Expect Jaret like older brother Kent to have a successful career at Southern Columbia.

Freshman Joe Klock is a talented lightweight who has experience in Folkstyle, Freestyle, and Greco-Roman. Klock is a 3x Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State medalist and a MAWA Eastern National Champion. At the PAWF State Tournament Joe has captured three (3) Greco-Roman State medals and two (2) Freestyle State medals. At Benton Area Joe joins a Tiger wrestling program with a history for success. Klock will benefit from junior Alan Diltz who was a 30-match winner and PIAA State Qualifier in 2014 at 106 lbs. With Diltz likely moving up in weight this season it opens the door for Klock. Competing at 106 lbs. as a rookie Joe has the potential to make an impact in District 4 where he was a 2x District 4 Junior High Champion. Overall, there is no doubt Joe Klock has an impressive Youth resume and only time will tell how that success translates into high school.

Working out with Headlee and facing stiff competition in the WPIAL will only help the rookie transition into high school competition.
