In 2011 Heimtextil recorded exhibitor growth of five percent. How has exhibitor interest in 2012 developed?
Once again we will record an increase in exhibitors, and look for-ward to the return of some renowned international companies. So this makes it clear: the industry relies on Heimtextil as the first and globally most important marketing and order event.
What thematic focus points will Heimtextil 2012 concentrate on? Contract business supply will be a key topic once again – with
innovative product solutions, presentations, architect tours and competi-tions. Sustainability also continues to be very important for Heimtextil and its industry. The colourful “Green Exhibition – let it grow!” special presen-tation in hall 11.1 is provided in this respect. Two publications provide an overview of the two areas: the Contract Guide on contract business sup-pliers, and the Green Directory on sustainably producing manufacturers. Both brochures are available at the fair for free.
What services and events can visitors and exhibitors look forward to?
With the Coupon Business Finder we provide interior designers and retailers a free directory, which lists providers of small and minimal amounts. With regard to events, the new “Let’s talk about ...” presentation area in the foyer of halls 5.1/6.1 is a real must, where renowned speakers will illustrate contract business and sustainability, among other topics. Top quality wallpaper will also be on show in the “Wall Gallery” in hall 3.1. We also have some events on promoting new talent in the programme. And, of course, the trend show in Forum 0 also ranks among the highlights.

The market segment for sustainable textiles continues to develop at above average rate. According to a 2010 study as commissioned by Messe Frankfurt, the annual growth rate is approx. ten percent. At Heimtextil 2011, 81 percent of all visitors rated the issue as important.
Heimtextil 2012 will therefore also focus once again on green topics. The first trade fair day will kick off in the new “Let’s talk about …” presentation area in the foyer of Halls 5.1/6.1 with “Sustainability” as the key note. The second trade fair day is dedicated to the “Green Hospitality – the Balance Between Ecology and Economy” to-pic. In the “Green Exhibition – let it grow!” special show in Hall 11.1 at the Portalhaus entrance, the Stijlinstituut Amsterdam will put ecolo-gical materials on the stage. The colourful presentation emphasizes the creative power of sustainable and modern design. The Green Di-rectory also provides an overview of exhibitors that score extra points with high ecological quality or sustainable production methods.

Ein anregender Neuheiten-CocktailAn inspiring cocktail of innovations
With the support of the French Secretary to Foreign Trade and representatives of
the Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France, once again Espace Textile brings
together 40 design studios and textile manufacturers with a broad range of home
textiles under the banner of ”French Savoir-Faire“.
On offer is a striking, decorative trend landscape for consumers who wish to underline their indi-vidual style. Espace Textile displays an inspiring cocktail of new upholstery, curtains, home linen and accessories. Eclecticism and a mix of styles feature colour as the key element for the new trends. 4 major currents should be noted: Chic with “an ECLECTIQUE CHIC Home“, Eco-De-sign with “an ARTY NATURE Home“, Nostalgie with “a FRESH FANTAISIE Home“, and Nature with “a DESIGN PARADISE Home“.
Espace Textile is dedicated to French textile companies and provides a wide range of services: interior and fashion seasonal trends, information on market developments, consulting and training with exclusive programmes, conferences on market developments and international promotion (buyers’ meetings and pavilions within the world’s major textile shows, such as Heim-textil Frankfurt and MoOD-Indigo Brussels.).
Karim Rashid is “the” pop artist among internationally successful designers.
In his collection for Marburg Wallcoverings, “young” quotes of the ebullient 60s and 70s interact with fine, timeless design. Combined with bold colours, its design challenges you to react.
The diversity of the graphic demonstrates Karim Rashid‘s range: at one point organic forms are quoted, another pattern focuses on strict geometric, almost mathematical graphics, supplemented by dissolving structures in another design. And finally the designer also finds almost too elegant, reserved graphics, such as a trendy salon. The flocked structures with 3D effects on the fleece wallpaper provide a haptic ex-perience.

Chic and sweet – these two key words go hand in hand and are syn-onymous with the Elitis 2012 collections. Sitting snugly between com-fort and refinement, the fabrics enchant houses and uplift décor. De-signs and materials combine and enchant, each relating its own story.
Pure materials on the walls, which ensure relaxed 3D comfort bet-ween wood panels, maps and quilts. Folds, paper or textiles celebrate a strong comeback and enter new territory. Flocks are enhanced in such a way that it is difficult to resist touching them. Straw sways in natural splendour and shantung performs its role with class. Elegance is more important than pomp and makes every wall a feast for the eyes.
This extravagant collection has both a feminine and masculine effect at the same time. The graphic pat-terns harmonise perfectly with an elegant touch of luxury – a fancier, more timeless chic, which likes to move into big rooms. At the same time strong decors with art deco grandezza catch the eye, radiating a hint of aristocracy and glimmering secretively in gold and silver. Wonders are only revealed when the cha-racter of the elements appear. This collection’s de-signs lead the way there! They luxuriously and sensi-tively create a dazzling beauty for rooms with true character.

Dazu kommen Spitzenwerte in puncto Schalldämpfung.
which Duette® optimally utilizes. this highly ef-ficient blinds and sun protection system has been tested in extensive studies by the Fraun-hofer IBP, producing highly impressive results with exceptional energy efficiency. Added to this are top values for sound absorption.
Best possible values with heat, cold and sound insulation
With its one-of-a-kind climate zone with air cushions, Duette® reduces heat absorption at the window in summer by up to 78%. the heat stays outside and energy-intensive air-condition-ing systems or power-eating fans are largely unnecessary.
Duette® also achieves best results in winter. Energy losses at the window can be re-duced in living areas by up to 49%. this is equal to a saving of approx. 12% in heating energy. A saving of up to 34.7% can even be achieved un-der certain usage boundary conditions in offices

And there’s still more! Duette® also achieved top values with sound absorption, es-pecially with a lot of glass, ceramics and con-crete in the room. According to the Fraunhofer IBP, in many cases reverberant sound, and therefore speech intelligibility, can be provided with the large-area use of Duette® alone in the optimum range. this is much more than all other sun protection systems can do!
… and it‘s also a decorative highlight
Duette® stands out from the crowd with style, atmosphere and versatility all at once. not only can different material qualities be worked in a system with individual added benefits – the a-bundance of materials is also astounding. nu-merous special solutions for the highest possi-ble living comfort are available to choose from, including flame-resistant qualities in acc. with DIn 4102 B1, which are especially suitable for children’s rooms or even public buildings. the offering is complemented by demanding and up-scale structures and designs, a large choice of inspiring, finely harmonized colour shades, and additional extras and refinements.
Fabric classic from nya nordiska for la Co(o)rniche
Louis Gaume opened La Co(o)rniche in Europe’s highest dune in 1930. In the years that followed the exceptional location made the hotel fa-mous as a popular hunting lodge. The cooperation of the Gaume fami-ly, which had owned the hotel for many years, with the new owner William Téchoueyreves has now resulted in a contemporary moderni-sation of the hotel, retaining its characteristic atmosphere.
With true flair for authenticity and La Co(o)rniche’s special location, design-er and architect Philippe Starck ma-naged to realise an interior design of clear design vocabulary and the high-est possible quality. “Alpha” elegantly blends into this aesthetic. And even twenty years after its creation this fabric classic still exudes the discrete luxury of a successful symbiosis of the finest material and timeless de-sign. “Alpha” is 75 percent cotton and 25 percent viscose, and is espe-cially suitable as a decoration and
padding material, available in 18 colours. The La Co(o)rniche decided for a typical textile design from Nya Nordiska, with stripes in red and white.
Nya Nordiska has been designing and producing top-quality decora-tion and furniture covering materials for the private and contract busi-ness areas since 1964. With more than 270 awards for outstanding design, this textile producer ranks among the leading providers of in-novative furnishing concepts in the world.

Die ganze Gestaltungskraft der Stoffe nützen Utilise the entire creative power of textiles
Modern textiles open up fascinating crea-
tive scope, which star architect Hadi
Teherani utilises in an extra special way!
The logic of his holistic approach is that he
not only uses textiles very specifically – he
also designs himself.
Moderne Textilien eröffnen faszinierende
Gestaltungsspielräume, die der Stararchi-
tekt Hadi Teherani auf besondere Weise
nutzt: Es liegt in der Logik seines ganzheit-
lichen Ansatzes, dass er Textilien nicht nur
gezielt einsetzt, sondern selbst entwirft.
Herr Teherani, Ihre Arbeit steht für eine ganzheitliche Herangehensweise. Was bedeutet für Sie Ganzheitlichkeit?
Mr Teherani, your work represents a holistic approach. What does holism mean for you?
“As an architect and designer in one person, the concept of holism plays a very special role for me. I don’t see my task in the fragment – I see it in the complex overall composition, in the harmony of room and furnish-ing, right down to the last detail. Basically even in the design of urban spaces, architectural spaces and interiors.
When an architect designs, they instinctively have an ideal, alive space in front of their eyes. An empty architectural space can therefore only be an intermediate goal. Holism in architecture always demands solv-ing entirely different problems, and thinking the respective building very far into the future, so you can secure a long-term economic, ecological, but also emotional and aesthetic utility value.

Ideally for me this also includes the design of every detail, right down to the product design. My portfolio therefore ranges from furniture, including kitchens and bathrooms, through to wall and floor surfaces.”
What role do textiles play for you when you design a room?
“Textiles are indispensable for mankind. We wear them on our skin and surround ourselves with them almost everywhere. Architecture is therefore also a medium for textiles, especially when we’re talk-ing about comfort in private rooms.
Textiles can structure rooms, set accents, and create harmonies. We can use them to control
sun, light and acoustics. Just consider the huge selection from Thomas Demand in the Berlin National Gallery last year, where an exhibition laby-rinth for large-scale photos, each with its own stage, was created from curtain fabrics. The fabrics, by the way, five kilometres in total, were pro-vided by the Danish manufacturer, Kvadrat, who also supplied the binding material for my catalogue raisonné, which appeared in 2005. A sustainable furniture material as an alternative for leather and buckskin replaced the classic paperback. In the meantime the Danes’ industrial textile design has even penetrated fashion. Jil Sander uses felt woollen materials from Kvadrat in her autumn/winter collection, and also makes the material into an artistic experience in the form of clouds in her shops.
This shows how far the possibilities of textile materials actually go today. Decisive in this respect is not only the fine tuning of the colours of a room – so, too, is the haptic impression, the play of light on alternat-ing, soft surfaces.”
You have designed carpets and wallpapers yourself, for Vorwerk or A.S. Création, for example. What moved you to do this? What new possibilities do your designs open up?
“The trigger is often that I cannot find what I need for my build-ings on the market. Then I have no option but to work out my own design.

Was hat Sie dazu bewogen?
The starting point with the floors was the idea to create a stable homogenous basis for contract business with a loop-pile carpet made of metal, for example, or a transparent vinyl covering, which has a perfect béton brut effect. Added to this were still very technoid carpets, and exclu-sive hand-tufted soft carpets with special material effects.
I find the carpet tile revolution driven by me especially exciting. The top quality self-tufted carpet module opens up the creative play on the floor again and again, without any technical costs. With free, artistic pat-terns, I sometimes resort to two thousand year-old Persian ornaments, which nevertheless remain very restrained in their specific, geometric appearance.
A long-life aesthetic is very important to me, vis-à-vis the colour scheme as well, to consequently be able to actually capitalize on the dura-bility of the material for the long term. Every surface, every material, has an artistic influence on the room. The decisive effect is always the inter-play of all!”

An welchen Textil-Projekten arbeiten Sie derzeit ?
What important trends do you see with the use of textiles in home construction and with commercial buildings? How do you rate the value of sustainability?
“For carpet modules I see very big opportunities in com-mercial construction, because sustainability is really secured long-term, even when repairs are required – right through to the scope of easy-to-handle, alternating forms of appearance.
The room’s acoustics are becoming increasingly impor-tant. This topic in particular is also a question of the use of tex-tiles, soft surfaces, and even furniture.
I can also imagine a very different way of controlling sun-light at the window. There is a lot of scope for innovations here.”
What textile projects are you working on at the moment?
“I am still busy on the ‘Scale Living’ carpet tiles collection for resi-dential areas. I am also working, for example, on a collection of fibre glass wallpapers with textile structures.”
Thank you for the interview Mr Teherani.

Lasting innovationsHamburg Label, peppa grace, specialises in high-grade home texti-les. The collection includes bedding, plaids, pillows and table linen, as well as a fabrics collection. It is designed by the young graduate designer, Steffi Plikat. A quote from Coco Chanel has influenced her since she began her work, and it is also the guiding principle of her collection:“I am against fashion that doesn‘t last. I cannot accept that you throw your clothes away just because it is spring.” This produces a serious challenge, which Steffi Plikat formulates like this: “A perfect design, top quality materials, well thought through functionality – the perfect product accompanies its owner their life long, regardless of whether it be a dress, a chair or a snugly blanket.“

Smart textiles are increasing their role in
the daily life of consumers. What helps
astronauts in space and researchers in the
Antarctic can also be useful for the ordinary
Everyman.
Aptly named phase change materials (PCM) from Outlast are used today in numerous products – from apparel, underwear, socks, accessories or shoes, right through to bedding. Outlast bedding products help you sleep better, dynamically balancing out uncomfortable temperature fluctuations.
But how do PCM work? Not too hot, not too cold – just right. That is how easy it is to be effective! Outlast Technologies, Inc. is a pioneer and market leader headquartered in Boulder/Colorado. Outlast’s PCM technology was originally developed for NASA to protect astronauts from temperature fluctuations in space. Outlast materials absorb excess body heat, save it, and release it again to the body when needed. Welcome “side effect”: sweating is reduced significantly, and temperature is therefore balanced out actively and dynamically. Outlast
products reduce overheating and shivering; heat is distributed evenly.
On the whole comfort and well-being are increased significantly, which is also important for bedding products. Outlast materials are used in duvets, pillows, mattresses, mattress protectors or bed linen, etc.

Mit Lenzing Modal® Edelweiss stellt Lenzing Textil eine zukunftwei-sende Weiterentwicklung der Lenzing Modal® Faser vor. Die besonde-ren Eigenschaften wie Weichheit und Farbbrillanz der Lenzing Modal®
Faser bleiben erhalten.

sing, Austria, is fully integrated and has all production stages optimal-ly under control – from wood pulp through to the fiber. Continuous high attention can therefore be given to environmental friendliness. The Edelweiss technology uses oxygen-based chemistry that is parti-cularly environmentally friendly. And there are further plus points: Lenzing Modal® is produced from su-stainably generated beech wood. The fibre is CO2 neutral. Thanks to its potential for integration and its innovative environmental relief con-tribution, the Lenzing pulp plant requires no additional energy – quite the contrary. The plant is actually the most important energy supplier for the entire Lenzing site. Lenzing is therefore a frontrunner in the wood bio-refinery area. All this makes Lenzing Modal® Edelweiss a truly unique modal fiber that meets the highest environmental stan-dards.

The innovation potential in Phase Change Materials (PCM) is demon-strated by a new bathrobe for sauna and bathing purposes, which Dyckhoff GmbH and Outlast® Europe GmbH have developed together. The bathrobe can absorb, save and give back excess body heat thanks to the smart Outlast® technology. This visibly increases well-being! Af-ter a hot sauna the body doesn’t cool so quickly, and after a cold sho-wer it is pleasantly warmed up. This works as follows: Patented mi-crocapsules containing the Outlast® Phase Change Materials and embedded in viscous fibers are integrated on the inside of the bathro-be. If excess body heat is absorbed, the cooler material “loads” it. If the body temperature falls, the heat is circulated back to the body. The Outlast® viscous fiber has all the benefits of conventional viscous fibres, but it also provides the highest possible comfort thanks to an optimised microclimate between the body and textiles. Close to the body temperature and humidity changes are pleasantly reduced. This can also be used in other areas of application, such as in batteries. The Outlast® technology can improve sleeping comfort here.

salesPro Games 2012Ein neuer schulungswettbewerb für Verkaufsprofis
A new training competition for sales professionals
Sales professionals from different product areas participating in next year‘s
SalesPro Games can look forward to valuable prizes totalling more than
EUR 10,000 – including a trip to the Olympic Games in London.
It is the first time this initiative is hosted by the OEKO-TEX® Founda-tion in cooperation with the Bundesverband des Deutschen Textil-einzelhandels (German Association of the Textile Retail Trade, or BTE). Retail experts have until 15 May 2012 to register for the competition at www.oeko-tex.com/salespro free of charge, download training materials for the Baby & Junior, Day- and Nightwear & Outer-wear and Home Textiles product areas, and complete the test. The objective of the SalesPro Games is to communicate comprehensi-ve information regarding textiles that have been tested for harmful substances, along with general sales techniques. Working with these training materials allows participants to directly apply this information when speaking to customers, and hence optimise the quality of their advice and sales successes.
In the advance round participants representing a product area will becompeting at the European level. They will be asked to answer 15 questions. The 50 participants with the highest number of points per product area will qualify for the next main round. This means that in June 2012 the 150 best experts from the Baby & Junior, Daywear, Nightwear & Outerwear and Home Textiles areas across Europe will
be competing for valuable prizes. Each participant of the Sales-Pro Games will also receive a certificate and a document
with their participant number. Using the QR code indica-ted in the document, end consumers will be able
to vote for “their“ retailer, and will also have an
opportunity to win a valuable prize.
