As an educator, what are the most important tips to remember when serving students with
disabilities?
Tip #1:
● Watch your dates, watch your dates, watch your dates!
Tip #2:
• Make sure you have the RIGHT people at the table!
Tip #3:
● If you put it in the IEP, it’s not an option--it’s a requirement!
Tip #4:
● What’s written in the IEP MUST match what happens in real life!
Tip #5:
●Don’t promise things you can’t deliver!
Tip #6:
● Don’t tell an IEP member NO unless you have an alternative option that is best for the child.
Tip #7:
● Make all IEP decisions with data in hand! Don’t ever make service
delivery determinations based solely on emotions or
pressure from stakeholders.
Tip #8:
● All EC service providers need to come to an IEP meeting prepared
with a completed IEP DRAFT of goals and information!
Tip #9:
● EC students are entitled to a FREE and APPROPRIATE public education in the LEAST RESTRICTIVE ENVIRONMENT.
Remember: FAIR doesn’t mean that everyone gets the SAME thing. FAIR means everybody gets what they NEED to
succeed!!
Tip #10:
● Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you don’t know the answers!
