A message from your Đoàn Phó Nghiên Huân Tr. Lưu Công-Huy

Greetings! I am thrilled that you have decided to join us for this year’s program. The journey

ahead will be challenging, but I am confident that you will have plenty of fun and will benefit

greatly from the experience. I want to take a moment to share with you our focus and our theme

for the upcoming year.

Let’s start first with our focus: mastering the fundamental Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể topics that are

covered in this book. As leaders within TNTT, it is critical to work towards mastering these

concepts rather than just familiarizing ourselves with them. A leader is most effective in any

organization when he/she is fully aware and passionate about what he/she is leading. Therefore,

to become an effective leader within TNTT, is important to know about our history, our values,

and our practices. The things that make us us. To help you accomplish this, I have reformatted

and revised this book to best help YOU master each topics. (If you are wondering where the

detailed leadership lessons are, we have elected to defer most of them to next year. We’ll spend

2021 focusing on that once we’ve mastered the things in this book.)

On to this year’s theme: “If you can do the little things right, you can do the big things right.”

We spend most of our time worrying about the big things that we have left to accomplish and

end up overlooking the small things that are seen as boring, monotonous, or irrelevant. As a

result, we miss out on the lessons that these small things can teach us. But it’s those very lessons

we miss out on that pave the way for us to accomplish the bigger things! A small task, if looked

at properly, teaches us about dedication. It teaches us about attention to detail. It teaches us grit,

focus, and determination. And, as a result of all those things, it will help you develop the mindset

of a winner. These are valuable skillsets and resoures that you can take with you for the rest of

your life.

This year is all about learning how to train your mindset. We want to help you become the best

leader that you can be within our TNTT community and beyond. It first begins with a mastery of

the fundamental TNTT topics and becoming as competitive as you can with it (with your peers).

It then continues with learning how to maintain the right mindset about small things and small

tasks. In turn, that will allow you to harvest countless life lessons and habits you might otherwise

miss out on. You will face small things every day for the rest of your life. It’s our goal to help

you benefit from them as much as possible.

The entire DTDP team is excited to have you along for the journey this year. We are dedicated

towards helping you become the best leader that you can be, as well as arming you with the tools

needed for a successful future. It will take plenty of work on your end to make this a truly

successful year, however. The question now is will you put in the hard work to help kickstart

your journey? I believe you can, and I believe you will.

Phong Trao Thiêu Nhi Thanh Thê History of the Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Movement

NGUỒN GỐC & DANH XƯNG (NỘI QUY ĐIỀU 1) Phong Trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể Việt Nam khởi đầu mang tên Nghĩa Binh Thánh Thể, là chi

nhánh của Hội Tông Đồ Cầu Nguyện dành cho tuổi trẻ do Linh Mục Bessières dòng Tên thành lập

tại Pháp vào khoảng năm 1915 theo tinh thần Thông Điệp Quam Singulari của Đức Giáo Hoàng

Piô X cổ võ và ban phép cho trẻ em chịu lễ sớm. Bốn khẩu hiệu truyền thống của Nghĩa Binh

Thánh Thể là: Cầu Nguyện và Tông Đồ (rút ra từ Hội Tông Đồ Cầu Nguyện), Thánh Thể (năng

rước lễ theo Thông Điệp của Đức Piô X), và Hy Sinh (dựa theo tinh thần Đạo Binh Thánh Giá,

hiến thân bảo vệ Hội Thánh).

Nghĩa Binh Thánh Thể Việt Nam được các linh mục dòng Xuân Bích (Saint Sulpice) thành lập

đầu tiên năm 1929 tại trường Thầy Dòng "École Puginier" ở Hà Nội, mang mục đích thuần túy

đạo đức. Qua thời gian hoạt động phát triển ở khắp các giáo phận, Nghĩa Binh Thánh Thể cho ra

Bản Nội Quy Thống Nhất đầu tiên năm 1964, đổi danh xưng thành Phong Trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh

Thể Việt Nam, đặt nặng mục đích giáo dục giới trẻ. Trước đà tiến không ngừng của Phong Trào

và để đáp ứng nhu cầu giáo dục giới trẻ ngày càng hữu hiệu hơn, một bản Nội Quy mới cho Phong

Trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể Việt Nam đã được ra đời.

Sau năm 1975, Phong Trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể Việt Nam nẩy mầm phát triển một cách kỳ diệu

nơi các cộng đồng Công Giáo người Việt tại nhiều nước trên thế giới như Pháp, Đức, Úc, Hoa Kỳ,

Gia Nã Đại..., và các nơi có các trại tỵ nạn như Phi Luật Tân, Nam Dương, Mã Lai, Thái Lan,

Hồng Kông...Nay tại Hoa Kỳ, Phong Trào được mang danh là: Phong Trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể

Việt Nam Tại Hoa Kỳ (PT/TNTT/VN/HK).

OUR ROOTS & ORIGINS The roots and origins of the Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Movement can be traced back

to the early 20th century. In 1910, Pope Pius X released a decree known as “Quam Singulari”

which stated that children could receive Holy Communion when they were old enough to reason.

Parents and pastors were given the duty of assuring that children would receive their First

Communion and continue to receive the Body and Blood of Christ on a regular basis. From “Quam

Singulari”, TNTT derived its motto of Communion (Thánh Thể).

In an effort to help youths cope with the turmoil of World War I, Fr. Besiere, from the Jesuit

religious order in France, started the Eucharistic Crusade in 1915, which is a branch of the Prayer

Apostolate (Hội Tông Đồ Cầu Nguyện). The focus of this group was to help youths connect with

God through deep reflection and acts of good will. This “ideal” is the root of TNTT’s Prayer (Cầu

Nguyện) and Apostolic Works (Làm Tông Đồ). The motto of Sacrifice (Hy Sinh) was inpired in

the spirit of a Catholic organization known as the Crusade of the Cross (Đạo Binh Thánh Giá),

whose ideal is to offer one’s life to protect the Church.

In Vietnam, priests recognized the need for better religious education and a deeper spiritual

life for Vietnamese youths. As a result, priests from the St. Sulpice religious order brought the

Eucharistic Crusade (Nghĩa Binh Thánh Thể) from France to Vietnam in 1929. This is widely

recognized as the official birth of TNTT. In the years following its creation, the Eucharistic

Crusade continued to spread to parishes throughout Vietnam.

The Eucharistic Crusade continued to grow in Vietnam for more than three decades.

However, its leaders observed a need to adapt with the social and cultural changes in Vietnam.

There was a need for youths to not only have a deep spiritual life, but to also be successful as

citizens of a society. In 1964, The Eucharistic Society published its first regulations handbook (Nội

Quy), outlining its foundation, goals, and rules. It also adopted a new name: The Vietnamese

Eucharistic Youth Society (Phong Trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể Việt Nam). TNTT still kept

Communion at the center of its teachings but also added activities such as singing, games, camping,

and other less conventional methods of religious education.

TNTT would endure some of its toughest challenges in 1975 and the years that followed.

On April 30, 1975, Saigon fell and Vietnam was governed under a new regime. Tens of thousands

of Vietnamese people fled to other countries in search of a new life, and TNTT activities practically

came to a complete halt.

Fortunately, when many TNTT leaders left the country, they took their faith and ideals

with them. New TNTT groups began to grow in refugee camps in South East Asia. Leaders who

found their way to U.S. also started groups. In 1978, TNTT groups started in a few U.S. cities. By

the early 1980s, there were TNTT groups in Vietnamese Catholic communities all throughout the

U.S. In 1984, prominent TNTT leaders gathered in Louisiana and officially started the VEYS in

the USA. It was at this conference that independent groups finally united under national leadership.

The birth of our Đoàn (Đoàn Chúa Hài Đồng) came shortly after in 1985 as the first TNTT chapter

in the Northwestern United States.

Today, in the US, there are approximately 100 TNTT chapters in over 25 states with 15,000

members and 1,600 Leaders. And we continue to grow.

MỤC ĐÍCH / PURPOSE (NỘI QUY ĐIỀU 2) Phong Trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể nhằm hai mục đích tổng quát:

1. Đào luyện thanh thiếu niên trở thành những con người kiện toàn và những Kitô Hữu hoàn

hảo.

2. Đoàn Ngũ hóa và hướng dẫn thanh thiếu niên loan truyền Tin Mừng Chúa Kitô và góp

phần xây dựng xã hội.

The missions of the Eucharistic Youth Movement are:

1. To educate youths in both their social and spiritual lives, as well as help them to become

better people and responsible Christians.

2. To organize and guide all youths and help them become more aware of the Church's

mission to the world by engaging in the spreading of the Good News, and be involved in

working for the good of society through apostolate services, in serving others.

NỀN TẢNG / FOUNDATION (NỘI QUY ĐIỀU 3) Phong Trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể lấy Lời Chúa trong Thánh Kinh và Giáo Huấn của Giáo Hội

Công Giáo là nền tảng để giáo dục và hướng dẫn giới trẻ trong các hoạt động.

The Eucharistic Youth Movement takes both the Word of God in the Bible and the Teachings of

the Catholic Church as its foundation to educate and guide young people in activities.

LÝ TƯỞNG (NỘI QUY ĐIỀU 4) Phong Trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể nhận Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể là trung tâm điểm, là nguồn sống

thiêng liêng và là lý tưởng sống của đời mình.

The Eucharistic Youth Movement recognizes the Eucharist as its center point, the sacred source

of life, and ideals of our life.

TÔN CHỈ (NỘI QUY ĐIỀU 5) 1. Sống Lời Chúa và kết hợp với Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể bằng Cầu Nguyện, Rước Lễ, Hy

Sinh, và Làm Việc Tông Đồ, cách riêng làm Tông Đồ cho giới trẻ.

Live God’s Word and Unite with Jesus through Prayers, Holy Communion, Sacrifice, and

Apostolic Actions, especially as the Apostles for the Youth.

2. Yêu mến và tôn kính Đức Maria Mẹ Chúa Cứu Thế, để nhờ Mẹ chúng ta đón nhận Chúa

và đem Chúa vào đời một cách tuyệt hảo.

Love and honor Mary, Mother our Savior, so that through Her, we can receive God into

our life in a more perfect way.

3. Tôn kính các Thánh Tử Đạo Việt Nam; noi gương và nên chứng tá Tin Mừng Chúa Kitô.

Honor the Vietnamese Martyrs; follow examples of the Witnesses of Christ’s Good News.

4. Yêu mến và vâng phục Đức Giáo Hoàng, đồng thời cầu nguyện và thực hiện những ý chỉ

hàng tháng của Ngài.

To promote prayers for the Holy Father (carry out His monthly intentions) who is the Vicar

of Christ on earth and to pray for the needs of the whole Church. Also, Love and obey the

Pope.

5. Thăng tiến con người nhân bản. Bảo tồn và phát huy truyền thống văn hóa dân tộc Việt

Nam.

Promote and To Self-improve humanity. Preserve & extend the Vietnamese Culture and

Tradition.

PHƯƠNG PHÁP GIÁO DỤC (NỘI QUY ĐIỀU 7) Phong Trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể sử dụng những phương pháp thích hợp để giáo dục thanh thiếu

niên về hai phương diện tự nhiên và siêu nhiên

1. Tự Nhiên: Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể dùng những phương pháp tự nhiên như ca vũ, sinh hoạt

ngoài trời, vào sa mạc, hoạt động xã hội...mà các hoạt động này được thấm nhuần tinh thần

Thánh Kinh.

2. Siêu Nhiên: Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể đặt căn bản cho đời sống tinh thần bằng cách Sống

Ngày Thánh Thể qua việc Dâng Ngày, Cầu Nguyện, Rước Lễ, thực hiện Bó Hoa Thiêng

Liêng, Tĩnh Huấn, Chia sẻ Lời Chúa.

TNTT has the goal of developing youth into better Christians and more productive members of

society. It uses many teaching techniques to achieve this goal, but they all can be summed up into

2 categories: Natural and Spiritual.

1. Natural: Natural teaching methods are activities not directly related to faith or spirituality

but serves an important purpose in the education of TNTT members. These methods help

develop characteristics that are more practical and applicable in common everyday life.

They can also make Biblical and Catechism lessons livelier and easier to understand.

Natural methods used in TNTT include (but are not limited to): games, singing/dancing,

plays/skits, Morse/knot-tying/scout activities, camping, etc.

2. Supernatural: The center of TNTT life is the Eucharist. TNTT revolves around the Blessed

Sacrament because it allows our members to unite and become one with Christ. Each

individual starts his/her day with a morning prayer with a deep desire to be ready for Holy

Communion and to make sacrifices with God in mind, through loving charitable activities

and through apostolate services. The day ends with minutes of silence and a moment to

record " A Bouquet of Spiritual Flowers" in thanking God. All activities during the day is

called a "Eucharistic Day". Every day of life shall be "Days of Eucharist".

Khăn Quang Tuyên Uý: Màu trắng viền đỏ, phía sau có huy hiệu TNTT. Màu trắng là màu trong

sạch, tinh truyền, niềm hy vọng, long cậy trông và sử chiến thắng. Vì vậy, Ngài sẽ là người đại

diện cho Chúa để hướng dẫn Đoàn Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể.

Khăn Quang Trợ Uý: Màu đỏ, viền trắng, phiá sau có huy hiệu TNTT. Màu đỏ màu của lễ hiến

Khăn Quang Huân Luyên Viên: Màu tím than, viền theo màu ngành của ba cấp Nghĩa, Thiếu và

Ấu, phía sau có huy hiệu Sinai (Huấn Luyện Viên Sơ Cấp khăn màu tím một viền vàng; Huấn

Luyện Viên Trung Cấp khăn màu tím có hai viền: viền vàng và xanh biển đậm; và Huấn Luyện

Viên Cao Cấp khăn màu tím có ba viền: viền vàng, viền xanh biển đậm và xanh lá mạ). Màu tím

là màu hy sinh quên mình trong vui tươi và tràn đầy hy vọng. Màu của “sẵn sang”, tu thân và tự

Divine Promise of Assistance.

1After Moses, the servant of the LORD, had died, the LORD said to Moses’ aide Joshua,

son of Nun: 2Moses my servant is dead. So now, you and the whole people with you, prepare

to cross the Jordan to the land that I will give the Israelites. 3Every place where you set foot

I have given you, as I promised Moses. 4All the land of the Hittites, from the wilderness and

the Lebanon east to the great river Euphrates and west to the Great Sea, will be your territory.

5No one can withstand you as long as you live. As I was with Moses, I will be with you: I

will not leave you nor forsake you. 6Be strong and steadfast, so that you may give this people

possession of the land I swore to their ancestors that I would give them. 7Only be strong and

steadfast, being careful to observe the entire law which Moses my servant enjoined on you.

Do not swerve from it either to the right or to the left, that you may succeed wherever you go.

8Do not let this book of the law depart from your lips. Recite it by day and by night, that you

may carefully observe all that is written in it; then you will attain your goal; then you will

succeed. 9I command you: be strong and steadfast! Do not fear nor be dismayed, for the

LORD, your God, is with you wherever you go.

10So Joshua commanded the officers of the people: 11“Go through the camp and command

the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for three days from now you shall cross the Jordan here,

to march in and possess the land the LORD, your God, is giving as your possession.’”

12Joshua addressed the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh:

13“Remember what Moses, the servant of the LORD, commanded you when he said, ‘The

LORD, your God, is about to give you rest; he will give you this land.’ 14Your wives, your

children, and your livestock may remain in the land Moses gave you here beyond the Jordan.

But all the warriors among you must cross over armed, ahead of your kindred, and you must

help them 15until the LORD has settled your kindred, and they like you possess the land the

LORD, your God, is giving them. Afterward you may return and possess your own land, which

Moses, the servant of the LORD, has given you east of the Jordan.” 16They answered Joshua,

“We will do all you have commanded us, and we will go wherever you send us. 17As

completely as we obeyed Moses, we will obey you. Only, may the LORD, your God, be with

you as God was with Moses. 18Anyone who rebels against your orders and does not obey all

your commands shall be put to death. Only be strong and steadfast.”

Spies Saved by Rahab.

1Then Joshua, son of Nun, secretly sent out two spies from Shittim, saying, “Go,

reconnoiter the land and Jericho.” When the two reached Jericho, they went into the house of

a prostitute named Rahab, where they lodged. 2But a report was brought to the king of Jericho:

“Some men came here last night, Israelites, to spy out the land.” 3So the king of Jericho sent

Rahab the order, “Bring out the men who have come to you and entered your house, for they

have come to spy out the entire land.” 4The woman had taken the two men and hidden them,

so she said, “True, the men you speak of came to me, but I did not know where they came

from. 5At dark, when it was time to close the gate, they left, and I do not know where they

went. You will have to pursue them quickly to overtake them.” 6Now, she had led them to

the roof, and hidden them among her stalks of flax spread out* there. 7But the pursuers set out

along the way to the fords of the Jordan. As soon as they had left to pursue them, the gate was

shut. 8Before the spies lay down, Rahab went up to them on the roof 9and said: “I know that

the LORD has given you the land, that a dread of you has come upon us, and that all the

inhabitants of the land tremble with fear because of you. 10For we have heard how the

LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what

you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan, whom you

destroyed under the ban. 11We heard, and our hearts melted within us; everyone is utterly

dispirited because of you, since the LORD, your God, is God in heaven above and on earth

below. 12Now then, swear to me by the LORD that, since I am showing kindness to you, you

in turn will show kindness to my family. Give me a reliable sign 13that you will allow my

father and mother, brothers and sisters, and my whole family to live, and that you will deliver

us from death.” 14“We pledge our lives for yours,” they answered her. “If you do not betray

our mission, we will be faithful in showing kindness to you when the LORD gives us the

land.”

15Then she let them down through the window with a rope; for she lived in a house built

into the city wall. 16“Go up into the hill country,” she said, “that your pursuers may not come

upon you. Hide there for three days, until they return; then you may go on your way.” 17They

answered her, “We are free of this oath that you made us take, unless, 18when we come into

the land, you tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you are letting us down. Gather

your father and mother, your brothers, and all your family into your house. 19Should any of

them pass outside the doors of your house, their blood will be on their own heads, and we will

be guiltless. But if anyone in your house is harmed, their blood will be on our heads. 20If,

however, you betray our mission, we will be free of the oath you have made us take.” 21“Let it

be as you say,” she replied, and sent them away. When they were gone, she tied the scarlet cord

in the window.

22They went up into the hill country, where they stayed three days untiltheir pursuers, who

had sought them all along the road without finding them, returned. 23Then the two came back

down from the hills, crossed the Jordan to Joshua, son of Nun, and told him all that had

happened to them. 24They assured Joshua, “The LORD has given all this land into our power;

indeed, all the inhabitants of the land tremble with fear because of us.”

Joshua 3

1Early the next morning, Joshua and all the Israelites moved from Shittim and came to

the Jordan, where they stayed before crossing over. 2Three days later the officers went

through the camp 3and issued these commands to the people: “When you see the ark of the

covenant of the LORD, your God, which the levitical priests will carry, you must break camp

and follow it, 4that you may know the way to take, for you have not gone over this road

before. But let there be a space of two thousand cubits between you and the ark: do not come

nearer to it.” 5Joshua also said to the people, “Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the

LORD will perform wonders among you.” 6And he told the priests, “Take up the ark of the

covenant and cross ahead of the people”; so they took up the ark of the covenant and went

before the people.

7Then the LORD said to Joshua: Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel,

that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. 8Now command the priests

carrying the ark of the covenant, “When you come to the edge of the waters of the Jordan, there

take your stand.”

9So Joshua said to the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the LORD, your

God.” 10He continued: “By this you will know that there is a living God in your midst: he will

certainly dispossess before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites,

Amorites, and Jebusites. 11The ark of the covenant of the Lord of the whole earth will cross

the Jordan before you. 12Now choose twelve men, one from each of the tribes of Israel. 13When

the soles of the feet of the priests carrying the ark of the LORD, the Lord of the whole earth,

touch the waters of the Jordan, it will cease to flow; the water flowing down from upstream

will halt in a single heap.”*

The Crossing Begun.

14The people set out from their tents to cross the Jordan, with the priests carrying the

ark of the covenant ahead of them. 15When those bearing the ark came to the Jordan and the

feet of the priests bearing the ark were immersed in the waters of the Jordan—which overflows

all its banks during the entire season of the harvest— 16the waters flowing from upstream

halted, standing up in a single heap for a very great distance indeed, from Adam, a city in the

direction of Zarethan; those flowing downstream toward the Salt Sea of the Arabah disappeared

entirely. Thus the people crossed over opposite Jericho. 17The priests carrying the ark of the

covenant of the LORD stood on dry ground in the Jordan riverbedwhile all Israel crossed on

dry ground, until the whole nation had completed the crossing of the Jordan.

Joshua 4

Memorial Stones.

1After the entire nation had completed the crossing of the Jordan, 2the LORD said to

Joshua: Choose twelve men from the people, one from each tribe, 3and command them, “Take

up twelve stones from this spot in the Jordan riverbed where the priests have been standing.

Carry them over with you, and place them where you are to stay tonight.”

4Summoning the twelve men he had selected from among the Israelites, one from each

tribe, 5Joshua said to them: “Go to the Jordan riverbed in front of the ark of the LORD, your

God; lift to your shoulders one stone apiece, so that they will equal in number the tribes of the

Israelites. 6In the future, these are to be a sign among you. When your children ask you, ‘What

do these stones mean to you?’ 7you shall answer them, ‘The waters of the Jordan ceased to

flow before the ark of the covenant of the LORD when it crossed the Jordan.’ Thus these stones

are to serve as a perpetual memorial to the Israelites.” 8The twelve Israelites did as Joshua had

commanded: they took up twelve stones from the Jordan riverbed as the LORD had said to

Joshua, one for each of the tribes of the Israelites. They carried them along to the camp site,

and there they placed them. 9Joshua set up the twelve stones that had been in the Jordan

riverbed on the spot where the priests stood who were carrying the ark of the covenant. They

are there to this day.

10The priests carrying the ark stood in the Jordan riverbed until everything had been done

that the LORD had commanded Joshua to tell the people, just as Moses had commanded

Joshua. The people crossed over quickly, 11and when all the people had completed the

crossing, the ark of the LORD also crossed; and the priests were now in front of them. 12The

Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh, armed, marched in the vanguard of the

Israelites, as Moses had ordered. 13About forty thousand troops, equipped for battle, crossed

over before the LORD to the plains of Jericho for war.

14That day the LORD exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and so during his whole life

they feared him as they had feared Moses.

15Then the LORD said to Joshua: 16Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant

to come up from the Jordan. 17Joshua commanded the priests, “Come up from the Jordan,”

18and when the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD had come up from the

Jordan riverbed, as the soles of their feet regained the dry ground, the waters of the Jordan

resumed their course and as before overflowed all its banks.

19The people came up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and camped in

Gilgal on the eastern limits of Jericho. 20At Gilgal Joshua set up the twelve stones that had

been taken from the Jordan, 21saying to the Israelites, “In the future, when your children ask

their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 22you shall inform them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan

here on dry ground.’ 23For the LORD, your God, dried up the waters of the Jordan in front of

you until you crossed over, just as the LORD, your God, had done at the Red Sea, drying it up

in front of us until we crossed over, 24in order that all the peoples of the earth may know that

the hand of the LORD is mighty, and that you may fear the LORD, your God, forever.”

Joshua 5

Rites at Gilgal.

1When all the kings of the Amorites to the west of the Jordan and all the kings of the

Canaanites by the sea heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the

Israelites until they crossed over, their hearts melted and they were utterly dispirited because

of the Israelites.

2On this occasion the LORD said to Joshua: Make flint knives and circumcise Israel for the

second time. 3So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath-haaraloth.

4This was the reason for the circumcision: Of all the people who had come out of Egypt, every

male of military age had died in the wilderness during the journey after they came out of Egypt.

5Though all the men who came out were circumcised, none of those born in the wilderness

during the journey after the departure from Egypt were circumcised. 6Now the Israelites

wandered forty years in the wilderness, until all the warriors among the people that came forth

from Egypt died off because they had not listened to the voice of the LORD. For the

LORD swore that he would not let them see the land he had sworn to their ancestors to give us,

a land flowing with milk and honey. 7It was the children God raised up in their stead whom

Joshua circumcised, for these were yet with foreskins, not having been circumcised on the

journey. 8When the circumcision of the entire nation was complete, they remained in camp

where they were, until they recovered. 9Then the LORD said to Joshua: Today I have removed

the reproach of Egypt from you. Therefore the place is called Gilgal to the present day.

10While the Israelites were encamped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, they celebrated the

Passover on the evening of the fourteenth day of the month. 11On the day after the Passover

they ate of the produce of the land in the form of unleavened cakes and parched grain. On that

same day 12after they ate of the produce of the land, the manna ceased. No longer was there

manna for the Israelites, who that year ate of the yield of the land of Canaan.

Siege at Jericho.

13While Joshua was near Jericho, he raised his eyes and saw one who stood facing him,

drawn sword in hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you one of us or one of our

enemies?” 14He replied, “Neither. I am the commander of the army of the LORD: now I have

come.” Then Joshua fell down to the ground in worship, and said to him, “What has my lord to

say to his servant?” 15The commander of the army of the LORD replied to Joshua, “Remove

your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy.”And Joshua did

so.

Joshua 6 1Now Jericho was in a state of siege because of the presence of the Israelites. No one left or entered.

2And to Joshua the LORD said: I have delivered Jericho, its king, and its warriors into your power.

3Have all the soldiers circle the city, marching once around it. Do this for six days, 4with seven priests

carrying ram’s horns ahead of the ark. On the seventh day march around the city seven times, and have

the priests blow the horns. 5When they give a long blast on the ram’s horns and you hear the sound of

the horn, all the people shall shout aloud. The wall of the city will collapse, and the people shall attack

straight ahead.

6Summoning the priests, Joshua, son of Nun, said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant with

seven of the priests carrying ram’s horns in front of the ark of the LORD.” 7And he ordered the people,

“Proceed and surround the city, with the picked troops marching ahead of the ark of the LORD.”

8When Joshua spoke to the people, the seven priests who carried the ram’s horns before the

LORD marched and blew their horns, and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them. 9In

front of the priests with the horns marched the picked troops; the rear guard followed the ark, and the

blowing of horns was kept up continually as they marched. 10But Joshua had commanded the people,

“Do not shout or make any noise or outcry until I tell you, ‘Shout!’ Then you must shout.” 11So he

had the ark of the LORD circle the city, going once around it, after which they returned to camp for

the night.

12Early the next morning, Joshua had the priests take up the ark of the LORD. 13The seven priests

bearing the ram’s horns marched in front of the ark of the LORD, blowing their horns. Ahead of these

marched the picked troops, while the rear guard followed the ark of the LORD, and the blowing of

horns was kept up continually. 14On this second day they again marched around the city once before

returning to camp; and for six days in all they did the same.

15On the seventh day, beginning at daybreak, they marched around the city seven times in the

same manner; on that day only did they march around the city seven times. 16The seventh time around,

the priests blew the horns and Joshua said to the people, “Now shout, for the LORD has given you the

city.17The city and everything in it is under the ban. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are in the

house with her are to live, because she hid the messengers we sent. 18But be careful not to covet or

take anything that is under the ban; otherwise you will bring upon the camp of Israel this ban and the

misery of it. 19All silver and gold, and the articles of bronze or iron, are holy to the LORD. They shall

be put in the treasury of the LORD.”

The Fall of Jericho.

20As the horns blew, the people began to shout. When they heard the sound of the horn, they raised

a tremendous shout. The wall collapsed,* and the people attacked the city straight ahead and took it.

21They observed the ban by putting to the sword all living creatures in the city: men and women, young

and old, as well as oxen, sheep and donkeys.

22To the two men who had spied out the land, Joshua said, “Go into the prostitute’s house and

bring out the woman with all her family, as you swore to her you would do.” 23The spies entered and

brought out Rahab, with her father, mother, brothers, and all her family; her entire family they led forth

and placed outside the camp of Israel. 24The city itself they burned with all that was in it; but the silver,

gold, and articles of bronze and iron they placed in the treasury of the house of the LORD. 25Because

Rahab the prostitute had hidden the messengers whom Joshua had sent to reconnoiter Jericho, Joshua

let her live, along with her father’s house and all her family, who dwell in the midst of Israel to this

day. 26On that occasion Joshua imposed the oath: Cursed before the LORD be the man who attempts

to rebuild this city, Jericho. At the cost of his firstborn will he lay its foundation, and at the cost of his

youngest son will he set up its gates.

27Thus the LORD was with Joshua so that his fame spread throughout the land.

• Listening

A servant-leader seeks to listen receptively to what is being said. Listening, coupled with

regular periods of reflection, is essential to the growth of the servant-leader.

accepted and recognized for their special and unique spirits. One assumes the good

intentions of teammates and does not reject them as people, even if one finds it necessary

Morse Code Coi

“Có công mài sắt …có ngày nên kim..”

Morse code was devised in the 19th century by Samuel Morse, an American who had also

invented the electric telegraph. Morse wanted to develop a system of dots (.) and dashes (-) that

would send messages along the telegraph quickly.

LEARNING HOW TO LISTEN

Tích and Tè: In Morse code, each letter in the American alphabet corresponds to a specific

combination of dots and dashes, between one and four dots and/or dashes in length. Refer to the

“Morse Table” on page 20 for the Morse code alphabet.

However, dots and dashes are merly visual cues. When learning how to listen to Morse code, it’s

often better to think in terms of tích (the short sound) and tè (the long sound), instead of dots and

dashes.

Try to listen to the sound as “tích” or “tè” and write it down in its abbreviated form: “tích” = “.”

and “tè” = “-“. One of the hardest parts of Morse code is learning to separate and recognize between

“tích” and “tè”, as well as recognizing when the sender is moving on to the next word.

• The duration of a tè is three times longer than the duration of a tích.

• The silent space between the tích and tè in a letter is the same duration as a tích.

• The silent space between letters is the same duration as a tè.

KEYS TO SUCCESS

Never Stop: If you happen to miss or get confused by a character when writing down Morse code,

don't stop. Skip over the current letter and keep going. You can probably figure out one or two

missing letters if you keep going. But if you hesitate and try to figure out the letter you just missed,

you’ll likely miss the next 3-5 letters (likely ruining your chance of getting the whole message).

This takes a lot of practice, so don't get discouraged if you do hesitate at first.

Play it Fast: Practice listening to Morse code speeds slightly faster than the speed at which you

are comfortable. That's the quickest way to progress.

Time Out: When you reach a Morse code speed which you just can't seem to exceed, take a few

days off. When you return, you'll be surprised to find that you can often top that speed.

Practice Daily: The most important key of all is to try to practice every day. If you diligently

practice 10-20 minutes each day for 1-2 months, you will master almost any TNTT camp speed.

LEARNING HOW TO TRANSLATE AND MEMORIZE

Morse Table: This year, you will be required to memorize Morse code. That’s right, this is no

typo. Your job this year is to memorize all 26 letters of the alphabet, as well as the Vietnamese

characters that we so often use (sắc, hỏi, nặng, etc). We are emphasizing your ability to translate

Morse code from memory. The Morse Table below will help you accomplish this.

There are two reasons we are requiring you to memorize Morse. The first reason is that it will help

you translate more quickly at camp. Memorizing Morse will allow you to save several precious

minutes when decoding, and that could mean the difference between your team being first and last.

The second reason is that it serves as a memorization exercise, challenging your brain’s ability to

process and retain information. This is an underrated ability that is highly useful in high school,

college, and beyond. When you study topics like biology and chemistry, you won’t always have

textbooks and notecards to help you decipher definitions. In math class, you won’t always have

access to a formula sheet. The relation between school/work and Morse code isn’t always obvious

but trust me, memorizing Morse is a tremendous exercise that will benefit you in the future.

It is often easiest to memorize the alphabet in pairs. There are 11 pairs of letters that are opposite

from one another (example: A and N). There are only 4 letters that don’t have a pair: C, H, V, and

Z.

Semaphore Cơ

Semaphore is an international system of visual signaling of two flags or flashing lights. Semaphore

was traditionally used to send messages over relatively short but difficult-to-cross distances, such

as between hilltops or ships at sea.

This year, you’ll be tasked with memorizing semaphore. You will not have a semaphore table to

help you decode messages on the final exam. Luckily, it really isn’t too hard to memorize!

Use the table below to learn each of the 26 letters of the alphabet in semaphore. Note: The images

below show what the letters look like when you are receiving semaphore. When sending

semaphore, it will be the opposite. Keep this in mind when learning to receive and to send.

THE EASIEST way to memorize semaphore is to learn with a friend. One person sends the

message, the other receives the message. That’s it! Give it some practice and you’ll master it. Your

greatest difficulty will be trying to find someone that you can consistently practice with.

THEREFORE, the most practical way to memorize semaphore is by learning how to send

semaphore. Learning how to send trains your brain to memorize semaphore, except in reverse.

With a little bit more practice, your mind will learn how to flip the letters around. It is possible to

learn semaphore by yourself! Having a partner will just make it a little faster and more efficient.

LEARNING HOW TO TRANSLATE AND MEMORIZE

Below are three methods you can use to learn and memorize semaphore.

Opposite Visiualization

This method involves memorizing and visualizing the semaphore letters in pairs, much like how

it is done in Morse code. I find that this is the easiest way to memorize semaphore.

There are 11 pairs of opposites. Only four letters do not an opposite: R, L, T, D.

Fun Fact: If you look at the table on the previous page, you’ll see a section that says “Khẩu Quyết”.

This is the Vietnamese way of learning the “Opposite Visualization” method.

Circular Visualization

This method involves visualizing the relative positions of the static flag (the flag that remains in a

fixed position for each of the circle mentioned below) and dynamic flag (the flag that moves

clockwise from the static flag's position). The dynamic flag will always move clockwise from the

static flag's position, never counterclockwise. Although I prefer the “Opposite Visualization”

method, this method is also a favorite of mine.

Numerical Association

This method involves assigning a numeric value to each of the letter and is roughly based on the

Circular Visualization Method. Each letter will have a unique two number value. To assign the

numerical value, we use the numerical positions as seen above. For each letter, always use the

lower value of the two position first and the higher value as the second. Example: For the letter 'A'

we will assign it the numerical value of '01'. The letter 'B' will be assigned '02' and the letter 'R'

will be '26'. See the table below for the numerical assignment using this method.

In my opinion, this is the hardest way to learn semaphore. But if it works for you, go for it!

Dâu Đương TNTT Signs

In TNTT, “Dấu Đường” is primarily used during camps and in Hành Trình Đức Tin. Although it isn’t

realistic to find signs on the ground like these in random forests, learning dấu đường will help you

develop better awareness skills that you can apply in the future and how to read street signs.

Always look for dấu đường signs on the right side of your path. Signs on the left could be “fake” signs

designed to confused you, or they could be real signs meant for people walking in the opposite direction.

Study the 28 signs below and try your best to memorize them. Most of them are very easy to remember!

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE LOST

If you are ever in a situation where you think you are lost, stop and follow these S.T.O.P. steps:

S.T.O.P.

● Stay calm

Sit down, have a sip of water, and eat a bite of food. If you are cold, pull on a jacket or sweater.

Breathe slowly and steadily.

● Think

Try to remember how you got to where you are. Get out your map or phone and see what you

can learn from the symbols and contour lines.

● Observe

Look for your footprints in loose and muddy earth or in the snow. Look around for landmarks

that might give clues about your location.

● Plan

If you are fairly sure of a route that will take you to a known location, move carefully. If you

have a compass, use it to set a bearing in the direction of your destination. In case you need to

find your way back, mark your route well with broken branches, piles of stones, or whatever

else is handy.

Lost? Give these tactics a try. Once you figure out which way is North, you can then piece other bits of

information together to help find your way back.

METHOD 1: USING A COMPASS

If you are fortunate enough to have a

compass, determining which way is North

is very easy. A compass will typically have

two needles. One needle points in the

direction that you are facing/holding the compass. The other needle always points to the north (towards the

earth’s magnetic north pole), regardless of how you hold or orient the compass. That’s it! Once you know

which direction is North, you can figure out which way is South, West, East, etc.

In the photo above on the right, the gray and black arrow is the compass needle. The white arrow is the

orienting needle that will always point North.

Remember that most phones also have a compass app! These apps will do the exact same thing as a

compass.

METHOD 2: USING THE SUN

If you don’t have a compass, you can use the sun to determine which general direction is north. Just

remember the following: the sun rises in the east, sits along the south during during the day, and sets in the

west. Although this method is not as precise as a compass, it can come in handy when you don’t have a

compass or any other tools.

METHOD 3: USING A TREE

This method is trickier than using a compass or the sun. However, it is still doable! Start off by looking up

along the trunk of a medium or large tree. You will notice there are usually fewer branches to the north.

The north face of the tree is also more humid than the south face, so there is likely to be more moss and

vegetation growth along the north face. This is because the sun never shines directly on the north face,

making it moist and more habitable for moss and external vegetation.

You can take this concept and apply it to things other than just trees as well. For example, since the sun

doesn’t shine directly on the north face of objects and buildings, you will find more moss and vegetation

growth along this side and on the ground nearby. Snow also melts slower along the north side. This is why

you’ll rarely find your parents’ plants close to the north side of the house; there’s little to no sun there!

and least understood subject within this book. Why are knots so important? Let’s put it this way.

Someday in the future, you may never need to use semaphore, morse code, or Nghiêm Tập again. Knots?

You’ll continue to use some type of knot almost every single day for the rest of your life. Disagree? Then

See the following definitions of a knot, hitch, and bend. Get to know and understand the differences

between these three. Then, study up on the 10 of the most important “knots” you’ll need to know!

Knot – A knot is tied in a rope, string, or piece of webbing.

Hitch – A hitch connects a rope to another object, such as poles, handles, and other ropes.

Bend – A bend is a knot that joins two ropes together.

Cưu Thương First Aid

Anyone who is injured or becomes ill at camp should be seen by the camp health/medical director or

committee. Very minor injuries, such as superficial abrasions and cuts or easily removed splinters, may be

treated with the first-aid kit. However, they must be seen by the health/medical committee or director

after treatment. Always remember that this is first aid, not medical treatment. First aid is intended to help

keep the condition from worsening until medical treatment is available.

The following is a list of the most frequent accidents and how they should be handled.

Cuts:

• Clean the wound with soap and water. Apply a sterile Band-Aid or dressing afterwards

appropriately.

• Do not neglect skin cuts, especially when you are outside and exposed to the elements (example:

camp). As any cut may be become infected, preventative care must be used.

Sprains:

• Keep the camper’s sprained region relaxed and limp. Try to avoid excessive direct pressure to the

sprained region and surrounding areas. Apply a cold pack if possible and report to the camp

health/medical director or committee.

Nosebleeds:

• Sit upright with head tilted forward slightly.

• By remaining upright, you reduce blood pressure in the veins of your nose. This discourages

further bleeding.

• Pinch your nose at the bridge of your nose (not the nostrils) using your thumb and index finger.

Continue the pinch for 5 or 10 minutes. This maneuver sends pressure to the bleeding point on the

nasal septum and often stops the flow of blood.

• To prevent re-bleeding after bleeding has stopped, don't pick or blow your nose and don't bend

down until several hours after the bleeding episode. Keep your head higher than the level of your

heart.

Burns:

• Cool the burn by holding the burned area under cold running water for 15 minutes. If this is

impractical, immerse the burn in cold water or cool it with cold compresses. Cooling the burn

reduces swelling by conducting heat away from the skin. Do not put ice on the burn.

• Consider using a lotion. Once a burn is completely cooled, applying an aloe vera lotion, a triple

antibiotic ointment or a moisturizer prevents drying and makes you feel more comfortable.

• Cover the burn with a sterile gauze bandage. Do not use fluffy cotton, which may actually irritate

the skin. Wrap gauze loosely to avoid putting pressure on burned skin. Bandaging keeps air off

the area, reducing the pain and protecting blistered skin.

*In case of fires, be sure to have cold water or a fire blanket nearby.

Heat/Dehydration:

• Remember to hydrate during camp, especially during warm summer days. Aim to hydrate at

least once every two hours.

• The best way to prevent dehydration is by drinking water frequently, even when you are not

feeling thirsty. Try carrying a jug, container, or water bottle with you.

• If a camper is dealing with dehydration: have them sit in a covered/shaded area, let them rest cool

down, and then begin to re-hydrate. Let the health/medical director know of the situation as soon

as possible.

General things to remember during an emergency:

• STAY CALM and follow proper first aid procedures for illnesses or injury.

• When in doubt, either take the injured camper to the camp health/medical director or committee

or have the camp health/medical director or committee come to you.

• Never leave an injured person unattended. Send another person or camper to get help.

• Avoid moving an injured person unless there is immediate danger to their life by staying in the

same place (fire, falling material, drowning, etc...)

MEANING OF RIBBONS

A. Green Ribbon: Spiritual

Green is the color of Ấu Nhi, symbolizing the spirit of prayer. This is awarded for spiritual activities

or work that grows the faith and promotes piety.

B. Blue Ribbon: Activities

The color of the Thiếu Nhi, symbolizing the spirit of sacrifice, always living in joy despite hardships,

and bringing happiness to everyone. This is awarded for excellence in fun activities, dancing,

performances, & creative talents.

C. Yellow Ribbon: Learning

The color of Nghĩa Sĩ, symbolizing the spirit of sowing, always trying to improve themselves, where

Brown is the color of the Hiệp Sĩ, the color of dirt symbolizing humility, and awarded for members

who live a life of servant leadership. We are called to model after Jesus Christ in living a life of

humility, love, and service in the role of a leader.

E. Red Ribbon: Highest Spirit

The color of Huynh Trưởng, symbolizing the spirit of noble servant-ship, being selfless for the ideal.

The red ribbon is awarded for a holistic spirit that includes the natural and the supernatural. A spirit of

patience, forgiveness, dedication in all work, persistence in all trials, listening in all mistakes, a

gracious spirit in all communications.

A code is a word, group of letters or symbol that stands for another word or group of words. The coded

word always has the same meaning. Shorthand is a code. A code is really just a specialized language, where

the key is shared among a select group of people. Sometimes only you and a friend will have the key to

1. Có anh chàng anh đi (đi) về làng. Anh gặp đàn em be.
