This year’s Pancake Breakfast was a great success. NYS worked hard coordi- nating all their teams to make everything run smoothly. Good job and thank you NYS! I would like to thank Richard Hardy with the Kiwanis club, bringing their grill and cooks, who did a fantastic job with the pancakes along with the help of a Chef from Japanese School. Without their help, the lines would not move like they did that morning. Thank you Johnson Sensei, who made the lunch items served by Judo at the boutique. As always, this year’s breakfast and lunch was Ono. A huge thanks goes to Ted Yoshimura, Bob Yamada, David Fusato, Toshi Tera- moto, Fred Matsumoto and Tye Masaki who helped lay the tarp down onto the gym floor and set up all the tables for the boutique vendors. Becky Shinomoto and Helen Hikiji are the sole organizers in getting all the vendors for this year’s boutique. Great job! I would like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers from Japanese School, the Sugita family and NYS who helped at the boutique. It looked like everyone was getting an early start on their holiday shop- ping. As I walked around the gym, I would see people stop and chat with friends that they have not seen for a while. I would like to thank Ted Yoshimura for reinforcing the magnets on the wall and thank David Fusato in helping Bob Yamada with the installation of the new push bars for the classroom doors. We will also be installing the bars to the Dojo doors. Great job!! Attention, all graduating seniors! We will be accepting applications for the NERIO/SEJSCC Scholarship. The form is available on the SEJS website. The dead- line for the Scholarship will be February 10, 2018. The scholarships will be present- ed at the annual Recognition Dinner on Saturday, April 21, 2018. Scholarship win- ners must be present at the dinner to receive their award. . After hosting bi-monthly Team SCKF practices all year through June, it
was great to get back to Norwalk Dojo-centric training as we prepared for
competitions at the Nikkei Games Budo Tournament in August, and the
Southern California Kendo Federation Team Championships in September,
where our yudansha team made it to the semifinals. Congratulations to Ji
Daniel, Domen Sumi, Nguyen Emil, Hamamura Yu, Chang Jeffrey, and Kari-
ya Yoshijiro for bringing back 3rd place medals!
We also went back to basics in preparation for promotional testing in
October. Congratulations to Chong Connie for passing 4kyu, and to Kim
Ryan, Cho Daniel, and Cho Ryan for passing 3kyu! A huge thank you to Nor-
walk Dance Club for letting us come in at the tail end of their gym time on
Thursdays in August and September so we could practice kendo kata.
Thank you also to the Center, and especially Na Wahine ‘O Kawena,
for allowing us to host monthly SCKF youth training practices starting in
September. These practices should benefit our own youth kenshi as well as
the federation’s. We will also be hosting the SCKF women’s seminar on
October 21st and 22nd.
Finally, we are planning a dojo picnic in November (better late than
never); stay tuned for details!
Norwalk Kendo Dojo practices Mondays from 7:00 to 8:30 pm and Fridays from 7:30
to 10:00 pm. We also practice iaido (Japanese sword forms) from 9 to 10:30 pm on
Mondays. New members are welcome. For more information, including upcoming
and past events as well as how to join, please see our website at
