It is late 19th‒century Vienna, where fine ladies and gentlemen have gathered to attend a splendid ball. Renownedphysicist Dr. Falke (Kairi Hokusho) and his friend the Marquis von Eisenstein (Yuzuru Kurenai), dressed as a bat andbutterfly, respectively, join the merrymaking. After getting themselves roaring drunk, the two chums enter Goddess Park, where they imbibe yet more alcohol at an establishment featuring dancing girls and enjoy a lively conversation. It is herethat Alfred (Makoto Rei), the Marquis von Eisenstein's butler, comes to meet his master. At first the Marquis is nonplussed, but once he learns that Rosalinde, his wife, is waiting at their residence and as angry as the Devil, he suddenly makes abeeline for home. Unsure how to deal with his slobbering drunk companion, the Marquis tricks Falke into getting tied up toa statue of the goddess Nike, then dashes off in a hurry. Falke, left behind, falls asleep. As the city comes to life thefollowing morning, he wakes up still dressed in his bat costume and becomes the laughingstock of Vienna. Falke earns thenickname "Dr. Bat" and develops a burning desire to exact his revenge upon von Eisenstein. Dr. Lert (Rei Natori), Falke'sformer teacher, offers a suggestion: "If revenge is what you seek, at least make it amusing." Thus begins the tale of Dr.Bat's happy retribution...
The story of revenge begins with von Eisenstein receiving a five‒day prison sentence for contempt against an official. Hethen manages to enrage the justice behind the bench in the courtroom and confuse his lawyer, Dr. Blind (Hiroki Nanami),which results in the prison term being extended to eight days. The Marquis is ordered to begin serving his sentenceforthwith. Just before he is to enter the penitentiary, Falke comes along and invites his friend to join him at a banquetbeing put on by Prince Orlofsky of Russia (Kaito Seijo), who has invited many a young and beautiful lady. Having receivedtwo summons of differing natures, von Eisenstein contrives a fib for his wife, then departs from his home decked out in hisfinest attire and feeling in high and proud spirits. But the Marquis is not the only one whom Falke has invited to thebanquet, as he has asked von Eisenstein's wife Rosalinde and maid Adele (Fu Hinami) to attend as well.
