CANINE EAR ISSUES … HOW TO IDENTIFY THEM?
CANINE EAR ANATOMY
The shape of the canine ear makes it very sensitive to bacteria, parasites and mites.
Indeed, the canal of a dog’s ear is very different from ours, anatomically speaking.
Unlike human ears, dogs’ ears consist of two internal parts positioned at an angle of 90°
and of one external part. Most breed have an ear canal longer that humans and, most
of the time, the pinna falls over the canal. This means that air cannot flow freely. It makes the canal warm,
moist and more susceptible to infections.
Dogs with particularly long ears, such as basset or spaniels are even more exposed.
HOW TO IDENTITY THE EAR ISSUES?
There are very typical signs that can help you to identify an ear health issue.
The ear canal emits a very unpleasant smell
Ear discharge
The dog is constantly bending his head on the side
It seems to hurt when you touch him
The skin is red and painful
Swelling
Scabs
Loss of hair around the ear
Ear wax is black or brown
Ear skin is thicker
If you encounter any of this symptoms during your grooming, it is important that you inform your clients
and suggest him to take his dog to the vet as soon as possible.
MAIN CAUSES OF CANINE EAR PROBLEMS
Too much hair in the ear canal. Excessive hair in the ear that occur in some breeds may cause
irritation and problems with circulation of air in the duct, making the dog more susceptible to
infections and parasites. Remove the hair and clean the ear.
Foreign bodies. Elements, such as seeds can sometimes fit within the ear canal, causing pain and /
or inflammation. These elements should be removed as soon as possible by a veterinarian.
Ear mites. It is distinguished by the dark dirt or tasks that look like coffee grounds inside the ear.
These are parasites which develop in contact with other infected animals.
Allergic reactions. For dogs, most of ear problems are related to skin problems and allergies. Dogs
that are prone to itching are often also prone to ear problems. They may also suffer from allergic
reactions to parasites such as mites and scabies. If this is the case, it is important to clean the dog's
ears with non-aggressive products specifically designed for their ears.
Yeasts. Microorganisms that can cause infestations by yeasts. They grow in hot humid and dark
environments, e.g., canine ear canal. If your client shows symptoms of infestations by yeasts (which
quickly identifies with the odor coming from the ears), a veterinarian will prescribe the appropriate
treatment.

Some breeds are extremely intelligent. It is the case, for example, for the Border collie, a sheep dog. A study has proven that Rico was able to learn a list of more than 200 words and even to associate ideas. If he was presented 7 different objects including one he did not know, he was able to deduct and associate the unknown words to the unknown object. Since this study was published, another dog named Chaser, also a Border collie, was able to prove he knew more than a thousand words.

Grooming is a vocation and it often starts early!
This is the case for Clara, 9, already passionated
by this art and looking forw ard to her first real
groomer dog !!
Clara started at 7 years old but, from a very young
age, she’s been waiting for the day she could wash and handle her first dog. Indeed, this little prodigy is
also passionate about handling!
If, for the moment, she uses clippers only on body and legs, she can’t wait to be old enough for her first full
clipping, and, more than this, to be able to handle the scissors that she can already hold like a true groomer.
For the moment she trains on paper silhouettes and is waiting for
her 10th birthday, for which her parents promised her first dog.
This little girl would love a miniature Schnauzer.
Now, she helps her mum in her salon, washing and drying the dogs
for the customers who gives her permission, but we can surely
expect to meet her, in
the comings years, on
the podiums of dog
shows and grooming
competitions!

A few tips to prepare your salon for the Christmas season
15
Here is a simple recipe for dog biscuits that will delight your clients, your loved
ones and friends who want to spoil their dog during the holidays.
Beef and bacon flavor dog biscuits These biscuits are tasty and easy to prepare, they contain no
sugar and you can easily replace the beef stock with chicken or even vegetable if you
prefer. You can try to find a bone-shaped mold but any shape will do.
Ingredients 280g of whole wheat flour
55g of milk powder
2 teaspoon of beef stock (or chicken or vegetable as you wish)
120ml of bacon grease
1 egg
120ml of ice water
Instructions Preheat oven to 175 ° C.
Mix flour, milk and stock
Stir in the bacon fat and eggs, then add the ice water gradually until
dough is moist enough to make a ball. It is better to use a wooden
spoon and not a whisk.
Roll the dough on a floured surface until it is about 1 cm thick,
then cut to the desired shape.
Bake on an ungreased cookie tray until firm for about 25 minutes.
Make sure that the cookies are completely cooled before storing
them or give them to your dog. Store in an airtight container to
preserve freshness.
You do not have the time, desire or ability to cook for yourself?
Toilettage Magazine has found the perfect solution for you!

Introduction of the breed The Shih Tzu comes from Tibet and belongs to group 9, meaning that he is a companion and toy dog.
A little bit of history? Despite many very distinctive differences, there is still a tendency to confuse Apso and Shih Tzu. This breed
comes from Tibet but developed in imperial China. When it became a republic in 1912, some
representatives of the breed found their way to Europe. Nevertheless, the first registration in Great Britain,
as an import, was only in 1931. The breed was recognized apart from other eastern breeds, in 1934 and The
Kennel Club granted it with a separate book of origins in 1940 with the authorization to compete for the
Challenge Certificates in 1949. The head of the Shih Tzu looks like a very seducing chrysanthemum which is
due to the hair growing straight on the muzzle.
Official standard of the Shih Tzu (source: AKC) General Appearance: The Shih Tzu is a sturdy, lively, alert toy dog with long flowing double coat. Befitting
his noble Chinese ancestry as a highly valued, prized companion and palace pet, the Shih Tzu is proud of
bearing, has a distinctively arrogant carriage with head well up and tail curved over the back. Although
SPECIAL FILE : THE SHIH TZU
37
there has always been considerable size variation, the Shih Tzu must be compact, solid, carrying good
weight and substance.
Even though a toy dog, the Shih Tzu must be subject to the same requirements of soundness and structure
prescribed for all breeds, and any deviation from the ideal described in the standard should be penalized
to the extent of the deviation. Structural faults common to all breeds are as undesirable in the Shih Tzu as
in any other breed, regardless of whether or not such faults are specifically mentioned in the standard.
Size, Proportion, Substance: Size - Ideally, height at withers is 9 to 10½ inches; but, not less than 8 inches
nor more than 11 inches. Ideally, weight of mature dogs, 9 to 16 pounds. Proportion - Length between
withers and root of tail is slightly longer than height at withers. The Shih Tzu must never be so high stationed
as to appear leggy, nor so low stationed as to appear dumpy or squatty. Substance - Regardless of size, the
Shih Tzu is always compact, solid and carries good weight and substance.
Head: Head - Round, broad, wide between eyes, its size in balance with the overall size of dog being neither
too large nor too small. Fault: Narrow head, close-set eyes. Expression - Warm, sweet, wide-eyed, friendly
and trusting. An overall well-balanced and pleasant expression supersedes the importance of individual
parts. Care should be taken to look and examine well beyond the hair to determine if what is seen is the
actual head and expression rather than an image created by grooming technique. Eyes - Large, round, not
prominent, placed well apart, looking straight ahead. Very dark. Lighter on liver pigmented dogs and blue
pigmented dogs. Fault: Small, close-set or light eyes; excessive eye white. Ears - Large, set slightly below
crown of skull; heavily coated. Skull - Domed. Stop - There is a definite stop. Muzzle - Square, short,
unwrinkled, with good cushioning, set no lower than bottom eye rim; never downturned. Ideally, no longer
than 1 inch from tip of nose to stop, although length may vary slightly in relation to overall size of dog. Front
of muzzle should be flat; lower lip and chin not protruding and definitely never receding. Fault: Snippiness,
lack of definite stop. Nose - Nostrils are broad, wide, and open. Pigmentation - Nose, lips, eye rims are black
on all colors, except liver on liver pigmented dogs and blue on blue pigmented dogs. Fault: Pink on nose,
lips, or eye rims. Bite - Undershot. Jaw is broad and wide. A missing tooth or slightly misaligned teeth should
not be too severely penalized. Teeth and tongue should not show when mouth is closed. Fault: Overshot
bite.
Neck, Topline, Body: Of utmost importance is an overall well-balanced dog with no exaggerated
features. Neck - Well set-on flowing smoothly into shoulders; of sufficient length to permit natural high
head carriage and in balance with height and length of dog. Topline - Level. Body - Short-coupled and sturdy
with no waist or tuck-up. The Shih Tzu is slightly longer than tall. Fault - Legginess. Chest - Broad and deep
with good spring-of-rib, however, not barrel-chested. Depth of ribcage should extend to just below elbow.
Distance from elbow to withers is a little greater than from elbow to ground. Croup - Flat. Tail - Set on high,
heavily plumed, carried in curve well over back. Too loose, too tight, too flat, or too low set a tail is
undesirable and should be penalized to extent of deviation.
Forequarters: Shoulders - Well-angulated, well laid-back, well laid-in, fitting smoothly into body. Legs -
Straight, well-boned, muscular, set well-apart and under chest, with elbows set close to body. Pasterns -
Strong, perpendicular. Dewclaws - May be removed. Feet - Firm, well-padded, point straight ahead.
Hindquarters: Angulation of hindquarters should be in balance with forequarters. Legs - Well-boned,
muscular, and straight when viewed from rear with well-bent stifles, not close set but in line with
forequarters. Hocks - Well let down, perpendicular. Fault - Hyperextension of hocks. Dewclaws - May be
removed. Feet - Firm, well-padded, point straight ahead.
Coat: Coat - Luxurious, double-coated, dense, long, and flowing. Slight wave permissible. Hair on top of
head is tied up. Fault: Sparse coat, single coat, curly coat. Trimming - Feet, bottom of coat, and anus may
be done for neatness and to facilitate movement. Fault - Excessive trimming.
38
Color and Markings: All are permissible and to be considered equally.
Gait: The Shih Tzu moves straight and must be shown at its own natural
speed, neither raced nor strung-up, to evaluate its smooth, flowing,
effortless movement with good front reach and equally strong rear drive,
level topline, naturally high head carriage, and tail carried in gentle curve
over back.
Temperament: As the sole purpose of the Shih Tzu is that of a companion
and house pet, it is essential that its temperament be outgoing, happy,
affectionate, friendly and trusting towards all.
Grooming a Shih Tzu We could think that the Shih Tzu has to be groomed with long shiny straight
hair, mandarin moustache and the famous top knot. But there is many ways
to combine the advantages of using your clippers with the beauty of the
long hair.
The Shih Tzu is what we
could call a « Therapy
Dog » so his grooming
has to match with your
temperament.
The different grooming
techniques allow you to
do many things
according to the
texture of the hair, his
morphology and his
everyday life.
Imagination is your only
limit with this breed.
Half-long hair style is
quite popular at the
moment and, of course,
you can try the Asian
style on this breed which is quite “made for it”.
Be careful, if ears are groomed too long it will « lengthen » the face and will weigh down the expression
except with a very well-constructed dog.
Your material Brush, combs, nail clipper, scissors, clippers, cutting heads n°10, 5, 4, 3.
Method: clippers & scissors - Clean the ears and the eyes, cut the nails. - Clear the ear lobe. - Clean around the nose, lower belly and clear the pads.
DOSSIER SPECIAL RACE : LE SHIH TZU
39
- With the cutting head of your choice or your scissors, clip from the base of
the head to the base of the tail. - Always work in the direction of the hair - Go down to the point of the shoulder. - Continue the ridge line going down on the flanks but not regularly. - Wash, dry, brush.
- On the foot, cut the hair with a round shape. - Shape the hair on back legs by following the angulations but leav
some volume. - Shape the front legs to give them a cylinder shape and under the chest by following the contours of the dog. - Shorten the hair at the back of the neck and link up with the shoulders. - Shape the hair of the forehand by cutting from shoulder to shoulder to give a rounded shape. - Ruffle the hair of the head and shape with your scissors to obtain a well-rounded head. - The top of the head has to be round without separation mark between the head and the ears (the hair must not fall in the eyes) - Add the final touch
Method: scissors only - Clean the ears and the eyes, cut the nails. - Clear the ear lobe. - Clean around the nose, lower belly and clear the pads. - Disentangle the hair carefully - With the scissors, cut around the feet without touching the hair on the top of the feet. - Equalize back legs by following the natural shape but leave volume.
- Use the scissors to equalize straight on the back and the belly. - Wash, dry and brush to straighten everything. - Shape the front legs to give them a cylinder shape and under the chest by following the contours of the dog. - Link up the head to the back with a more voluminous neckline. - Shape the hair of the forehand by cutting from shoulder to shoulder to give a rounded shape.
DOSSIER SPECIAL RACE : LE SHIH TZU
40
- Ruffle the hair of the head and shape with your scissors to obtain a well-rounded head and keep a good length of hair.
- The top of the head has to be round without separation mark between the head and the ears (the hair must not fall in the eyes)
- Equalize the moustaches and bottom jaw. - Equalize the ears. - Moderately cut the hair of the tail so it won’t drag. - Give the final touch.
Method: clippers only - If the dog is too matted, use the clippers (on the body and legs) by following the hair with cutting
head number 5, 4, 3 according to the desired length. - Remember to equalize the head according to the body so it won’t be disproportioned. A round
head, “baby” style with ear shortened as much as possible, will fit perfectly with a short cut and will allow an easier « maintenance » of the dog.
Natural method - Brush and comb to remove the knots. - Separate the hair with a line starting from the base of the head to the base of the tail. - Separate the hair on the top of the nose with a median line and comb on each side of the muzzle. - With the comb, draw a line from the external corner of the eye to the base of the ear, on each side
and then, draw a line from one ear to the other on the top of the head. - Gather all this hair in a toupet and tight it. - The hair must not be too tight. - Slightly cut the hair to equalize the coat. - Round the hair on the feet. - Comb the tail. - Give the final touch.
Advices - Grooming every 8 weeks if you use the clipper or 4 weeks if you use
the scissors. - We can clip him with a counter combs if the dog is not matted.
