2015
ANNUAL REPORT
Dear YMCA Friends,
The operating landscape for nonprofit organizations is constantly changing. 2015 saw our organization challenged by a number of factors including rising costs of maintaining our facilities while keeping our membership rates reasonable for the majority of northern Beaufort County residents, and the need for technology and equipment enhancements to increase our impact and better serve our members. We are pleased with the progress made during the last year.
In 2015, we transformed the lives of more than 8,000 children and adults who walked through the doors of our facility. We provided more than $260,000 in financial assistance to 764 local families in Beaufort and Jasper Counties so they could benefit from Y programs and memberships, regardless of their financial circumstance.
2015 also saw the formation of TOGETHERHOOD – the YMCA’s signature program for social responsibility. This program invites Y members to lead and participate in volunteer service projects that benefit the communities where we live. Our Togetherhood volunteers planned and completed five projects in 2015 assisting our fellow non-profits Friends of Caroline Hospice, HELP of Beaufort and The Giving – totaling over 350 hours donated to these worthy causes.
Our 2015 YMCA summer camps were held at 8 different sites in Beaufort and Jasper Counties and registered a record 734 youth ages 3-15 in its programs. Additionally, we welcomed over 80 participants into our Youth Boating Program and taught 259 free swim lessons through summer camp.
We thank you, our Beaufort County neighbors, for the gifts of time and financial resources you have shared with us to advance our cause: Strengthening our community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
Looking forward, we have plans for developing additional innovative senior-oriented programming, enriching academics for our youth as well as incorporating family-oriented engagement, and continuing to build strong, dynamic partnerships within our community. We will strive to meet challenging shifts in our operating environment with sound management and innovative thinking. We will uphold our unending commitment to our neighbors with increasing needs who reside across northern Beaufort County.
We are also excited to celebrate 20 years of the YMCA of Beaufort County during the entirety of 2016! Many of our popular, community-wide events like the Beaufort River Swim, Trunk or Treat, Boots & Bling plus some special surprises await us over the coming months, made even more festive during this anniversary year.
Though through the years the needs of our community never stop evolving, neither does the Y. By embracing change, we ensure our ability to innovate and remain vital well into the future. Thanks for being part of this change and an integral part of the Y. For a better us.

NURTURING POTENTIAL Child Care All kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why our Y nurtures the potential of hundreds of local children and teens by cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement. Here are just a few program highlights demonstrating how our YMCA is influencing young lives.
Discovery Preschool: Our fully-licensed preschool includes two classes of 3- and 4-year old students. Currently we serve 44 children, with 60% receiving financial support.
Students enrolled in the Discovery Kids Preschool are taught by certified teachers using The Creative Curriculum, which is also used in pre-kindergarten classrooms in the Beaufort County School District. 100% of the children that graduated from the program went into Kindergarten measuring at or above grade level.
After School Program:
2015 was another extraordinary year for our afterschool program with 225 kids age 4 – 14 attending our program in Beaufort and Jasper Counties. They are provided with not only a safe place to receive homework assistance but also an environment conducive to making new friends, learning new skills and building self-reliance. Activities available during the afterschool program include:
Tail Waggin’ Tutors & ARF, reading programs for students in second grade and above Bible Study led by volunteers from the Parish Church of St. Helena’s.
Y Club, where students choose from hobby/interest activities for themselves such as Lunch Box Cooking Club, Crafty Critters, Sports of All Sorts, STEM and more.
Students participate in gym activities including yoga and team sports, yoga, swimming, and are provided a healthy snack and dinner in line with HEPA standards.
Our after school program includes off-site locations: Robert Smalls International Academy, and Ridgeland Elementary School. 100% of these children received financial support while 55% of children attending the program at our facility in Port Royal received financial assistance.
GAINING CONFIDENCE Camp
YMCA Summer Camp is all about learning outside of school, exploring and appreciating the outdoors, and trying new things. We offer youth a variety of camps that keep them
active and engaged all summer! In addition to our Kiddie Camp and Traditional Camp we offered 19 specialty camps ranging from STEM-based LEGO® Remote Control
Mania Camp to Tennis Camp, Diva Camp and more.
Over 700 campers attended camp at one of our 8 sites during the ten weeks of camp last summer; Penn Center on St. Helena
Island, Whale Branch Elementary, Roberts Smalls International Academy, Hardeeville, Ridgeland, Port Royal Elementary, Lady’s
Island Elementary as well as the main YMCA facility in Port Royal. Campers at the Penn Center, Lady’s Island and Jasper County site received 100% financial assistance, benefitting 230 campers. In
total, our 28 different camps provided financial assistance to over 250 local families.
To ensure that all kids have opportunities to progress – not regress– with learning over the summer, the Y continued to
implement our Summer Learning Loss Prevention Camp (SLLPC). This camp included 2.5 hours of 4-Block literacy instruction and 4.5 hours of enrichment aligned to literacy daily. Also, we continued our
camp upgrade program that integrates new ideas and focuses on areas of skill building, relationship and belonging, and peer
interactions in our 2015 traditional summer camp program.
Additionally, we serve our community by hosting fun and educational day camps at our Port Royal location throughout
the school year when regular classes are not held due to holidays and teacher in-service days.
ACHIEVING GOALS Aquatics
2015 was a busy and successful year for YMCA aquatics as we taught over 2,500 swim lessons including evening and morning lessons, private instruction, after school, Discovery preschool, summer camp and groups from community partners including Thumbs Up, CAPA and the Boys & Girls Club. 344 individuals received swim lessons for no cost, thanks to generous donations and the success of events like Puppy Plunge and our annual Beaufort River Swim, which raised $8,800 and boasted 182 swimmers - our largest field of participants ever! Our Y swim team had an incredible year, with our girls’ team bringing home the 2015 State Championship and an overall second place for our Tigersharks! We added a pre swim team program for those young swimmers interested in testing the waters before making a swim team commitment and specialty clinics that focus on refining stroke and technique. In addition to our indoor pool renovation which was completed in January 2015, we added a special hydraulic chair lift, making access of our pool by those with disabilities much easier. We are also proud to give local Special Olympic swimmers a place to practice. Lowcountry Masters Swim Club utilize our pool three times per week and both physical therapy sessions (through Carolina SportsCare) and our own water aerobics classes have seen increased participation.
Our YMCA 100-Mile Swim Club reports14 participants completed their one hundred miles in the pool, with several members surpassing this goal. In the coming year we are excited to have our outdoor pool renovated with new Marcite and tile, freshly equipped for a busy summer in 2016!

IMPROVING HEALTH Wellness
We offer our “Get Started! Stay Active!” program to all members. This12-week training program includes a fitness assessment, a personalized exercise plan

workout routine, assist with a specialized regime due to illness or injury. We offer Personal Training Staff with specializations in areas of senior adult
fitness, agility training, aqua fitness, Tabata, tennis and strength and conditioning.
Our Group Fitness classes are open to all Y

participants in one class alone! We credit
our awesome Y instructors as well as
offering various modalities in the group
exercise classes.
While we offer over 60 combined indoor
cycling and aerobics classes per week, we
were able to add several new offerings in 2015, including Senior
Shape Up and Holy Yoga to our schedule.

BUILDING LIFELONG SKILLS Boating
2015 saw our Boating Program blossom from 3 to 5 week-long youth boating classes and
expand with an additional power boating class specifically for adults! Led by Boating Director
Paul Spencer, the need for boating instruction and safety education in our area is apparent
by the popularity of this Y program. In 2016 our adult boating class will be offered 5 times.
Adult: The adult class consists of one 3-hour
evening class at the Y covering South Carolina
DNR education and a second 4-hour class
using hands-on instruction at the Port Royal
Sound Maritime Center dock. Participants are
taught the DNR boating education class and
receive on-water experience in boat trailer
launching & retrieval, power boat operations,
docking, navigation, GPS & radio use, knots and basic safety instruction.
Youth: With the motto, “Leave No Child at the Dock“ this program taught over 80 rising 7th-10th
graders the knowledge and skills to become confident mariners
during 5 different one-week summer sessions in 2015. By using
hands-on teaching methods and STEM-based (science, technology,
engineering, math) practices, students gained skills necessary to
operate a sailboat, motorized watercraft, kayak, canoe and stand
up paddleboard safely.
Taught in conjunction with the Spirit of America Boating Education
and Safety Program, 100% of the students graduated, earning
their SC DNR Boating License.
DEVELOPING STRENGTH
Sports
In 2015, our Y hosted more youth and adults sports than ever before! Lisa Redwine,
Aquatics and Sports Director and James Penley, Sports Coordinator, continue to grow YMCA
sports in both numbers of participants and sports offered.
They are enthusiast and especially proud of the adult sports
that we now offer.
Every Monday evening or Sunday afternoon, we have adults
playing basketball, volleyball, kickball or soccer in a YMCA
league!
Lisa and her dedicated staff, including many volunteers (thank
you!), ran several program including basketball, indoor and
outdoor soccer, t-ball, flag football, and gymnastics/creative
movement for youth in 2015.
Adult sports programs continued to grow in popularity in
2015, having over 360 adults participating in team sports.
