To register for a program, drop in to

the Tofi noMunicipal Hall.

REGISTRATION INFORMATIONDid You Know?? You can register for programs at the District Offi ce. The District Offi ce is open

from 9am – 4pm Monday to Friday. We hope this makes it convenient for you to register in advance of our

programs. Registering in advance allows us time to consider implementing an extra class if the course is full,

to ensure adequate materials and supplies are available, and to implement staff /instructor changes should

we need to expand the program.

Sorry, the Course is Full Some classes fi ll quickly. If the class you want is full, please ask

to be placed on the waitlist. You will be contacted if space becomes available or if we add additional classes.

Changed your plans? A full credit or refund will be issued if we receive withdrawal

information prior to the course start date unless specifi ed otherwise during registration. There is a form

available at the District Offi ce to apply for credits/refunds. It is extremely helpful if you have a copy of your

receipt to attach to your application.

What?! You had to cancel it? Sometimes excellent courses with excellent instructors

are cancelled if everyone waits until the last minute to register (think “Tofi no time”). Register early to avoid

disappointment for yourself and others.

New Program Idea? Tofi no Parks and Recreation is always looking for new programs. If you

have a skill you’d like to share please give us a call or stop by the District Offi ce. We always have a need for

instructors, coaches and volunteers!

Program Minimum Ages For the enjoyment of all participants, children must be the

correct age prior to the fi rst class of the program. Exceptions may apply for program-specifi c reasons.

Accessibility We believe that recreation programs should be accessible to all children in our

community regardless of ability to pay. If you fi nd it diffi cult to participate in any program because of

fi nancial limitations, please speak with one of our staff .

Advanced Payment In order to secure your spot in a program, payments for the program must be received prior to the program commencing. By registering and paying

for a program in advance, the instructor is able to prepare for the correct number of participants enrolled.

If you call and register for a program, your spot is not secured until you come into the district and pay for

the class/program. By paying in advance for your program it alleviates the Parks and Recreation Staff from

having to phone and chase up payments during the program’s session. It also ensures instructors receive

their payments in a timely fashion.

If you are unable to make the full program payment prior to the start of the program, please let one of

the Parks and Recreation staff know and alternative arrangements may be made.

Pro-Rating Policy By registering and paying for a program, you are committing to attending

the full duration of the program. Refunds will not be granted for days missed, unless this is agreed upon in

advance with the instructor. Pro-rating for classes must be arranged through the teacher instructing the

course.

*New Billing Policy All program participants should register and pay in advance for

Tofi no Parks and Recreation programs. If participants begin attending a program without registering,

they will be added to an accounts receivable billing system with our Finance Department, and issued

a formal invoice for each program they attend.

If program fees are a participation barrier for you or your family, please contact the Parks and

Recreation department to make alternate arrangements prior to the start date of the program.

This issue of our Active Living Guide contains program andevent information for December 2012-May 2013.

Modern Dancewith KIM TUSON

Modern dance uses the technical base of ballet and is distinguished by its use of natural expression, movement exploration and invention. Classes focus on three - dimensional space, full use of spine (curves and spirals) and explore dynamics within relationship to music.* The use of modern dance vocabulary

using the R.A.D. syllabus as a technical base

* Use of Developmental Movement Patterns to facilitate full body connectivity

* The use of spine and torso* The use of gravity* The concepts of the Body, Eff ort, Shape,

and Space:BODY: alignment, awareness, sensing, and body connectivityEFFORT: the dynamics of movement (fl ow, weight, time, space)SHAPE: full body shaping (fl at, round, straight, spiral) exploring with the volume the body creates and how the body forms in relationship to others and environment.SPACE: awareness of 1D, 2D, and 3D space, exploring diff erent direction in “reach” space/exploration of spatial fl oor pathways.

* Personal expression and the invention of movement

* The idea of working conceptually to create thinking dancers so they are not just learning by rote or imitating steps

* Connection of mind body* Musicality, rhythm and use of voice with movement.

BC ARTS & CULTURE WEEKEvery year at the end of April, schools and communities across the province host a spectacular array of

events and activities as part of BC Arts and Culture Week. Now entering its 14th year, BC Arts and Culture

fi lms, media arts, dance, books, theatre and visual art are a part of daily life, and have a lasting impact.

They inspire us, challenge us and broaden our horizons.

BC Arts and Culture Week is presented by ArtsBC and ArtStarts in Schools. With the support of the Province

GYROKINESIS®

This methodology systematically and gently works the joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating exercises. Gyrotonic movements stimulate the body’s internal organs and breath is applied to invigorate and re-educate the body to move with fl uidity, relaxation and power. This class starts seated on a stool and ends on a yoga mat. We start with Taoist self massage to awaken the senses. The next focus is on the spine and pelvis, mobilizing the spine and increasing range of motion. Fluidity is the key, postures are smoothly and harmoniously connected through the use of breath, making the exercises appear and feel more like dance than traditional yoga.

Lighthouse TrailWork is currently underway on a reroute that will give users an easier option to navigate the trail, taking out one of the steepest sections of the route. This work should be complete by the end of the month. This was a priority set by the Lighthouse Trail Committee some time ago, and it’s great to see the work fi nally underway.

The restoration of the Petersen Drive access is now complete and has made a huge diff erence. This project was funded in part by a $14,000 grant from TD Canada. We’d like to give a big thank you to Ms. Morris and her class for helping with the planting portion, and to the RES for giving an informative presentation on some of our native plants. Also thanks to Kevin Midgely from the Lighthouse Trail Committee, and to Councillor Thorogood who both helped with the tree planting.

The trail currently ends close to the boundary of District Lot 120, which is owned by the province. We have requested permission to cross this Lot, which is critical to creating the connection to Middle Beach and beyond. The province has indicated it will support this application, on the condition we can show support from Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations. We have requested this support some time ago, and hope to hear positive news in the near future.

Tuff City Bike ParkWe’ve installed some handcrafted benches and an awesome carved sign for our new park. All great additions which fi t in well with the “feel” of the venue.

With the wet weather upon us, we’d just like to remind users to please stay off the jumps. Using the jumps while they are wet causes damage, and we only have so much manpower to maintain them. Thanks for your cooperation!

Multi Use PathWe got another grant! This one just shy of $40,000 from Western Economic Diversifi cation Canada, to help us fi x some of the root damage that is making our path a little unsafe. The project will start in the New Year and should be up and running well before our busy summer season. Note that there may be some sections that will be impassable for short periods of time, but please bear with us. It’ll be a huge improvement once it is all complete!

A reminder to all landowners along the MUP, please ensure vegetation is brushed back to improve sightlines along the MUP, and snow is cleared from driveways that cross the MUP.

We’re Getting Noticed!Early in the Fall we had a call from reccies from the Regional District of Nanaimo who had heard good things about our skatepark and bike park. They came out for a tour and were REALLY impressed with our facilities, and particularly the process we went through in the designing and building of our parks. This is a big pat on the back to YOU, our fantastic community, who supported our fundraising, came out to work bees, helped on the design and gave us encouragement throughout. We rock!We were featured in the last edition of the BC Recreation and Parks magazine as being “a community that is leading the way” with our social innovations and partnerships. Highlighted was a very sturdy relationship with VIHA.The New York Times featured our Bike Skills Park in their travel section, citing it as a draw for bike enthusiasts. You can view the article online at http://www.nytimes.com/

html. And our Parks and Recreation Director was recently invited to participate in a provincial roundtable of 17 local government leaders, to give input on tools and resources local governments could use to better serve their communities to become “healthy”. It’s great to see recognition that the “health” defi nition is broadening to include more than just physical health!

Parks and Rec Master PlanWe’d like to thank everyone who attended our Community Consultation evening on November 29. It was a great turn out with close to 200 people coming out to give their input on not only parks and recreation initiatives, but also to help with the Offi cial Community Plan review. It was a great community event with Wildside cooking up a storm, and Liam Tilitzky and Katie Jo Crocker from the Grade 12 French class bussing tables.

We will be taking your input and incorporating it into a fi rst draft which will then go through another public process before we put our hand to the fi nal draft. Your input is always welcome. Feel free to send us an email or give us a call with your thoughts. We’d like to have the fi nal report before Council in the Spring of 2013.

The BC government has introduced a program called Advance Care Planning. This is a document that expresses your wishes for end of life care. It consists of forms and technical

terms and the like. Kind of scary and not very appealing. I like to think of this as plan-ning an event, the ultimate event really. Let me share with you how I see my event playing out. Flowers by bed, lilies preferably. No feeding tubes, I love to eat. An assigned person to look after my health care decisions. An informed doctor with whom I have told my plans, who respects them and who, because I have given him guidance, can give me better care. I still want to be able to have the occasional cocktail, like at Christmas time. Spending time with friends and family and in this beautiful land is more important to me than wasting time on unnecessary treatments. A week spent doing

as I choose is worth more to me than a month spent in a hospital, clinic etc. Now that is just me, what I choose, what I want, I am not choosing for anyone else. We should each be able to choose for ourselves. Starting the conversation about your ownadvance care plan is a choice, a beginning and can be a gift to yourself and those that you love. "It is far better to foresee even without certainty than not to foresee at all." – Henri Poincare.

Watch for The Glass Bottle a play directed by Gary Marks and Consider the Conversation an award winning movie both guaranteed to stimulate conversation about planning for end of life.

The Art of Presence: Perspectives from Care Providers & Family MembersApril 8, 8:30 AM

Multipurpose room

Here are, interspersed, some things I know about him, and what he told me. Jan was born in Quesnel B.C., and grew up in East Vancouver.

to seek solitude. He describes his work as creating structural art, using drift wood and dimensional lumber. He builds gazebos, architectural features in homes, garden structures of all sorts. When not working, he likes to read, spend time in nature, meditate, do yoga, socialize, eat

out, dance, watch movies and surf the net a little. His passion in life is observing and enjoying the multiplicity of life patterns, marvelling at the beauty, diversity and complexity of the interconnectedness of all. He sees it all as a beautiful balanced whole. Jan wanted to become a Hospice volunteer in his twenties, but was turned back, being told he needed more life experience. He has now been with PRHS for 10 years or so. His involvement is in part a way to give back to the community. Asked about what he gets from that involvement, he responded that the training was

good information for anyone, no matter what they are doing in life, in particular the listening and communication skills. He enjoys being given the opportunity to use these skills, meeting and interacting with members of

the community, an opportunity which he might not have

there is something rewarding in accompanying someone in their life journey. “You get to be close to these people, and they to you. It’s a lovely thing.” Interacting in such an intimate setting with a stranger is a lot simpler and

The apparent barrier between strangers dissolves as soon as someone is willing to be fully present, and the other person is likely to follow. Asked how he felt about receiving the title of Volunteer of the Year, he humbly replied that he did not deserve it anymore than anyone else, but that it felt nice to have his volunteering noted. Thank you Jan, for all you do and all you are.
