The two groups of minerals .• The most common

classification of minerals is based on chemical composition.

• Minerals are divided into two groups based on their chemical composition.

• These groups are the silicate minerals and the nonsilicate minerals.

• Minerals that contain a combination with two elements are called Silicate minerals.

• Silicate minerals make up more than 90% of the crust.

• The rest of the crust is made out of nonsilicate.

The common silicate minerals .

Quartz = is the basic building block of minerals

Feldspar = minerals are the main component of most rock on the earth surface.

Mica = minerals separate easily into sheets when they break.

How do silicate form?

The silicate minerals make up the great majority of rocks. Silicate is a chemical term for the group of a single atom of silicon surrounded by four atoms of oxygen.

Most silicate minerals are formed when molten rock cools at either the earths surface, or deep underground.

Nonsilicate minerals.

Non-silicates are minerals that do not include the silicon-oxygen units characteristic of silicates.

They may contain oxygen, but not in combination with silicon

Nonsilicate minerals.

Some minerals do not contain a combination of Silicon and Oxygen, as silicate minerals do.

This group of minerals, called nonsilicates, are found in only 8% of the Earth's crust. Nonsilicate minerals include very valuable resources to humans, such as the precious metals gold, silver, and platinum, useful metals like iron, aluminium and lead, and the precious gems diamond and ruby.

Why nonsilicate is so important?

Nonsilicate minerals are not nearly as common as silicate minerals, they are a big part of our everyday life.

Since these minerals are so important to humans, we need to use them carefully.

Many of these minerals can be reused or recycled into new products.
