Japan developed a unique political cultureA Japanese emperor ruled

from Kyoto, a central city.

But real power rested in a local warlord called a shogun.

Local rulers had their own warriors called Samurai.

Japan was largely cut off from the world until 1853

When US ships led by Commodore Matthew Perry arrived, helping to open up Japan for trade.

The emperor began to modernize Japan,

And the country soon grew into a modern industrial power.

Japan began to invade other countries to meet its growing need for natural

resources.

By 1937 Japan had a huge empire.The Japanese signed a treaty with Germany and Italy in 1940.

1941 Japan entered WWII by attacking the US

and Nagasaki

The peninsula was divided into North and South by the US and the USSR

The war ended, and the two sides set up a peace line along the 38th parallel

And neither side governs it. No military may enter it.
