suspended from racing until it trials competitively to the Stewards satisfaction. A post race
veterinary examination did not reveal any obvious abnormalities.
Following the running of this race, Stewards upgraded the track rating to Good 3 at 1.38 p.m.
retrospective of Race 1.
Race 2 MAFFRA CUP DAY 28TH
FEB 2YO HANDICAP - 1205 metres: The start of this
race was delayed to avoid a clash with an interstate race.
Smartson slow to begin. Began to overrace approaching the 800 metres, shifted out from
behind the heels of Climate and got is head up, racing wide without cover from that point.
Climate shifted out on leaving the gates.
Attenborough held up for a clear run rounding the home turn and when being held up near
the 400 metres, steadied from the heels of Brookwater. Rider P. Moloney was reminded of
his obligations when using his whip not to get above shoulder height.
Medaille rider B. Melham reported that although the filly had a soft lead, he was of the
opinion that Medaille did not appreciate todays track rating (Good 3). A post race veterinary
examination revealed a slower than normal recovery rate and slight distress. A post race
sample was taken for analysis.
Kaptive Hero (second placegetter) rider A. Mallyon lodged an objection against
Attenborough (P. Moloney) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference
near the 200 metres. Evidence was taken from both riders and it was established that
Attenborough commenced to shift out when clear of Kaptive Hero approaching the 200
metres, and near the 200 metres Kaptive Hero was slightly inconvenienced when
disappointed for a run between Climate and Attenborough. As Stewards were of the view that
this incident did not affect the result of the race, the objection was dismissed.
Race 3 AYGEE GIPPSLAND 3YO MAIDEN PLATE - 1205 metres:
Stark Luck on arrival on course trainer S. Hasan requested a Veterinary Surgeon to inspect
the gelding as it had a nasal discharge. Acting on the Veterinary advice and concerns from
the trainer, Stewards authorised the withdrawal of Stark Luck at 12.36 p.m.
Bel Maiya slow to begin. Held up for a clear run from the 600 metres until shortly after
straightening near the 300 metres. A post race veterinary examination revealed a slow
recovery rate.

under pressure in the straight and has advised connections to add blinkers to the fillys racing
gear.
Keen Desire raced wide without cover.
Race 4 KWIK TIP BINS MAIDEN PLATE - 1411 metres:
Musical Man bounded when the gates were released and lost ground.
Page 16
Wichita Woman began awkwardly, shifted out slightly and made contact with I Am The
Rock.
I Am The Rock brushed at the start. Near the 1200 metres steadied from the heels of Touch
Of Illusion (M. Dee). M. Dee was advised to exercise more care when in similar
circumstances. Wide without cover from the 900 metres. When under pressure and after
being struck with the whip, shifted in abruptly and awkwardly placed close to the heels of
Ritchford near the 250 metres. Checked from heels near 200m
Fiefdom overraced in the middle stages. Had difficulty in obtaining a clear run in the early
part of the straight.
Lady Bee slow to begin. Raced tight near the 250 metres between Fiefdom and I Am The
Rock which shifted in after being struck with the whip. Apprentice J. Payne pleaded guilty to
a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137a, the careless riding being that near
the 200 metres she permitted her mount to shift out from behind Ritchford where there was
insufficient room, and in doing so shifted out across the running of I Am The Rock which had
to be checked and lost its rightful running between Lady Bee and Bolshoi Belle, which
shifted in slightly. J. Payne had her permit to ride in races suspended for a period to
commence midnight February 08, 2016 and to expire at midnight February 16, 2016, a total
of 9 meetings. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account Ms Paynes good recent record
in this area, her guilty plea and that Bolshoi Belle had contributed slightly to the incident.
Stewards deemed the carelessness to be in the mid-range.
Touch Of Illusion wide in the early stages before taking up a position outside the leader near
the 900 metres.
Race 5 SALE SIGNTORQUE F&M BM64 HANDICAP - 1205 metres:
Foreign Affair slow to begin.
Azzcool when questioned regarding the tactics rider J. Berriman explained that it was not her
intention to lead, however after beginning well her mount overraced in the early and middle
stages and as a result, led the field.
Portree In Motion raced wide without cover.
Aimees Choice rider C. Symons reported that his mount hung in when under pressure in the
straight.
Sistine Star rider S. Arnold could offer no real explanation for the mares poor performance
other than it may not have let down on todays firm track. A post race veterinary examination
did not reveal any obvious abnormalities.
Race 6 BENSON GROUP CONTRACTORS BM64 HANDICAP - 1005 metres:
Shot Caller began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with the hindquarters of
Somethinghappening. After passing the 100 metres raced in restricted room between Super
Bryan and A Private Party both of which shifted ground slightly.

Page 17

Sandons Stage approaching the 800 metres got its head up when attempting to steady. Held
up for a clear run between the 500 metres until approaching the 200 metres.

race veterinary examination did not reveal any obvious abnormalities.

Pathways connections advised it was their intention today to attempt to ride the gelding more
forward. Settled behind the leaders.
No Excuses Bec faltered when leaving the barriers and lost ground.
Written Up held up for a clear run rounding the home turn.
Hosting rider C. Symons reported that the gelding did not travel well in the early and middle
stages and made moderate ground in the straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed
the gelding to be lame in the off foreleg and will require a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness
prior to racing again.
Race 8 GIBSONS GROUNDSPREAD BM64 HANDICAP - 1728 metres:
Space Invader slow to begin.
Via Cavour began awkwardly. Approaching the 200 metres had to shift out to obtain a clear
run. When questioned apprentice rider B. Allen regarding tactics in the early stages, he
explained that after beginning fairly, bearing in mind his instructions to be mid-field with
cover, he was then going to be unable to cross horses to his inside and for this reason steadied
towards the rear of the field to enable him to gain cover.
Game Up Hardy caught wide without cover in the early stages and allowed to stride and
take up a position outside the leader passing the 1200 metres. Rider B. Werner reported that
the gelding may have come to the end of its preparation as it did not respond to his riding in
the straight. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any obvious abnormalities.
Trainer J. Wilson confirmed that the gelding will now be spelled.
Gallant Spur rider S. Arnold reported that the gelding felt flat and did not respond to his
riding in the straight. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any obvious
abnormalities. Trainer D. Blackshaw confirmed that the gelding will now be spelled.
Manwell (second placegetter) rider B. Thompson reported that the gelding may not have run
out the distance of todays event.

conditions.

throughout the event and failed to respond to his riding. A post race veterinary examination
did not reveal any obvious abnormalities.
Dashiell had some difficulty obtaining a clear run rounding the home turn.
Chips when questioned regarding tactics apprentice rider E. Brown explained that he was
instructed to lead which is its normal racing pattern, however, the gelding raced a little keenly
and for this reason opened up a significant margin on the field. E. Brown was fined $200 for
using his whip on nine occasions prior to the 100 metres. In assessing penalty Stewards took
into account his relative inexperience and his record in this area.
