TODAY’S RACING DIGEST – DEL MAR – July 22, 2009 www.todaysracingdigest.com Today's Racing Digest FAQ What is Today’s Racing Digest? For over 35 years Today’s Racing Digest has specialized in California racing, producing handicapping information in both a Southern and Northern California issue in print and on-line at www.todaysracingdigest.com. Today’s Racing Digest has, and always will be, dedicated to the survival of the horseplayer. What makes Today’s Racing Digest different from other racing publications? The Digest offers many features that cannot be found in other horseracing publications. Features such as track bias, Pace Ratings, which measure early speed, and a “paper race” called the Fractional Charting which compares each horse in today’s race based on a representative past performance. A page dedicated entirely to workout analysis has always been a popular feature, along with “Hot & Cold” trainer reports, a Claim Box report for owners and trainers, and our Better- Than-Looked List, which highlights horses exiting troubled or exceptional performances. What are Data Lines? A horse’s Data Lines can be found under the name of each horse on the race page. Often called “running lines” and “past performances”, the Digest’s Data Lines are unique in that the times for each race are adjusted to today’s distance, taking into account track pars and the track variant (the speed of the track). This allows for an accurate and easier comparison when horses are coming together after racing at different distances and/or surfaces. Also listed in the Data Lines are the conditions of the horse’s previous races, jockeys, track, track condition, finish position, track bias and morning line (ML) and actual odds (A). Does the Digest offer performance ratings or speed figures? Today’s Racing Digest prides itself in offering numerous performance figures for the handicapper. Pace and Final Time Ratings can be found at the end of each Data Line and are the most popular. The Pace Rating measures early speed, while the Final Time Rating assigns a figure for the final time. The Digest also offers the CPR (Comprehensive Performance Rating) and FIRE Number, ratings which take into account each time recorded in the race and put it all together in one number. Noted handicapper/writer Tim Osterman also contributes the Fast Figs, which are a speed and class figure all in one. Where can I find a copy of Today’s Racing Digest? Today’s Racing Digest can be purchased at every major track in California, as well as major satellite facilities. The Digest is also sold at selected retail outlets throughout the state, and is usually available 24 hours before first post. For a location nearest you or for the number of your local distributor, please call (760) 603-8800. The Digest, along with a stable full of simulcast handicapping information, can also be purchased on- line at www.todaysracingdigest.com. What can I find on-line at www.todaysracingdigest.com? On our web-site you can purchase both issues of Today’s Racing Digest at a discount in price when you subscribe to one of our download plans. With those downloads you can get all that is available on the web-site, including selections from our stable of handicappers, some of whom offer California selections, along with out-of-state analysis. There are also numerous “free” areas, such as the Daily Money Plays, Feature Races, and Week In Review, which provides commentary on all the previous week’s races. Give it a look. We think you’ll like what you see. TRAINERS While every effort is made to be 100% accurate in reporting trainers, it should be pointed out that horses are known to change barns overnight, or they may be recent arrivals from areas not covered by the Digest. Accordingly, it is advised that you check the official track program. JOCKEY CHANGES The symbol will follow the jockey's name when that jockey did not ride the horse in his previous start. This will not apply to horses arriving from Europe, South America, Canada or Mexico or horses that have not raced within the last six months. DEL MAR STEVE FIERRO’S RACEDAY USA BETTING LINE
Today’s Racing Digest now features a betting line. A betting line is the second quarter of a complete handicapping/investing process. The betting line is applied following contender selection. This is outlined in Steve's book "The Four Quarters of Horse Investing". PLEASE READ THE ITEMS LISTED BELOW The betting line is simple and easy to use. It is designed to point out the value opportunities in a race. Here are the recommendations or "best way" to use the betting line: 1. The top contender is offered at odds higher than listed on the betting line (overlayed). This is the strongest feature of the betting line. 2. If two contenders are overlayed, start at the top. The contender listed closest to the top is the play. If the two are above 8/1, play them both. 3. If three contenders are overlayed the race is a pass. The race is chaos and long term this is a losing situation. 4. Legitimate favorites: If the betting line lists the top contender at 3/2 or less and the betting public sends this contender to post at 3/2 or less,
this race must also be passed. This is a strong contender. The other contenders become "false overlays" because of the heavy action on the "legitimate" favorite. They do win, but long term they pay far too little to produce a profit.
Exotics: The betting line is a "win oriented" service. It is an excellent tool in constructing doubles, Pick 3's, and 4's, from a value standpoint.
DEL MAR - July 23rd
, 2009 1
st race Cape Of Bradford 9/5 Flashover 5/2 Air Fair 9/2 Speed is king in these turf dashes at Del Mar. So Let’s go with a one-way call if the price is right. Cape Of Bradford gate to wire for the “W”.
2
nd race Roman Charity 2/1 Miss Heather Lee 3/1 Pretty Kinzie 7/2 The last workout is a puzzler but I still will side with Roman Charity in the top spot in this race. 5/2 or higher is the price I am looking for.
3
rd race Top Biker 8/5 Baroda Court 3/1 On Fire 5/1 Mitchell got the maiden win from Top Biker last time out. He makes a very logical move to this conditioned claiming level for the first try versus winners.
4
th race Mytigersnosissy 5/2 Buyer’s Remorse 5/2 Pico Pico 3/1 I have listed three runners very close together on the betting line in this race. I am partial to the one listed at the top, Mytigersnosissy.
5th race Up Your Wager 5/2 Curvey Star 3/1 Flower Fusion 6/1 Hard Woman 6/1 I went back and forth between the top two listed runners, before I decided to give the slight edge to Up Your Wager at 3/1 and up.
6
th race Uncle Jeep 5/2 Defense King 5/2 White Lace Jimmy 3/1 Uncle Jeep has been favored in all of his recent starts. I think the last race running line will change that today. Let’s wait and see.
7
th race Itsnotjustagame 3/1 Shediak 3/1 Street Royale 5/1 Quarter Moon 6/1 They will crawl early and fly late in this turf marathon. 7/2 or better on either of the top two listed runners is what I am looking for. I think one of them will make it.
8
th race Moral Hazard 2/1 Domestic Brew 4/1 Little Heater 6/1 Pacific Halo 6/1 Let’s close out the card with Moral Hazard. He drops to the maiden claimers for the first time today.
Steve Fierro has been involved in horseracing since 1978. 1n 1998 he started the RACEDAYUSA betting line service. Steve is the host of ESPNS EVERYBODY’S RACING. TIM OSTERMAN'S FAST FIGS
Today's Racing Digest has been producing performance figures for over 25 years and have most recently introduced our newest figure, the FIRE Number. However, there are other sources for such numbers and we are proud to now offer Tim Osterman's FAST FIGS. Osterman, a fixture in the California Handicapping scene for the last 20 years will provide a 'FAST FIG' for each horse. This rating is a combined class/performance figure based on the horse's overall effort and the strength and level of the fields faced. Horse's scoring within FIVE points of the top figures should be considered contenders in today's race. if a horse's rating is following by a (+) it means a horse may be ready to improve on today's figure. Generally, a plus (+) is potentially worth an additional FIVE points. Runners rated 'X' are either first-time starters, shippers from a new circuit, comebackers off more than four months or horses that simply could not be assigned a reliable rating.

FIRST RACE - DEL MAR Today's Racing Digest
ANALYSIS: Another Del Mar meet kicks off with what looks like a competitive field that might turn into a good betting race as well. One Shot, Kaffeinator, Distinctive Afleet and possibly Guiding Hand, if he draws in, should be part of the early pace brigade. One Shot comes off a strong wire-to-wire win over this kind June 21 and could be the one to catch turning for home, but speed really struggled early in the meet last year and we're inclined to look for an off-pace type to take down the opener. Yodelin Dan has rallied to win two straight, earning solid ratings in the process. He won here in 2007 as well and should be rolling in the late stages. He's our HF 15a. Cousin Joe might fall into a perfect trip and he looks like a solid class fit. He finished 4th with $20,000 claimers June 28, but twice ran 2nd with $16,000 claimers before that and perhaps the leading jockey from the Hollywood Park meet, Rosario, can get off to a hot
start at Del Mar on 'Joe. Swiss Ski may be better around one turn, but he likes Del Mar and just missed vs. this kind sprinting July 11. He has Bejarano up and could make his presence felt. A value play might be High Stakes Silver. His recent form at this level is Ok, but he ran very well at Del Mar last year and might wake up in a big way with the return to the Polytrack. Let's make him the Digest HF 20. Finally, Dadsalittleunusual beat this kind April 1 and March 6 and sports solid connections, so he certainly can't be discounted, while Hunter Creek is one that could help spice up the exotics at a price. Now, crank up the Bing Crosby and let’s get this meet started. CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance have been: Cousin Joe :25.8 - Hunter Creek :25.9 - Fantasy Free and Swiss Ski :26.1

RACE APPRAISAL
HORSE COMMENTS One Shot (ARG) upset similar in wire-to-wire fashion June 21, earning strong Pace and Final Time Ratings in the process. He tops the charting off that effort, but is facing some other speed and ran poorly in his only start on the Polytrack at last year's meet. Swiss Ski checked in 2nd with this kind sprinting July 11, a race won by Trilliant, who came back to win his third straight vs $8,000 claimers July 19. He seems better around one turn, but does like Del Mar and should get a good trip stalking the speed. High Stakes Silver finished behind Swiss Ski sprinting with this kind July 11, but earned show dough routing with this kind June 21. He ran well at this meet last year, including a win over $32,000 claimers Aug 20, and could be very underrated in the Fractional Charting. He's worth a look and the price might be decent. Dadsalittleunusual won two straight vs this kind before running 2nd with $10,000 claimers April 17. He's worked seven times since June 1 and could bounce back for top connections. Watch the betting for more clues. Kaffeinator was reclaimed off a poor effort vs $8,000 claimers June 19. He dominated $12,500 non-winners of two the last time he raced for Sadler May 1, but seems a bit light on numbers and is facing other speed. Others seem more likely. NOTES: Reclaimed (from Doug O'Neill) for $8,000 June 19. Distinctive Afleet just missed with this kind May 9, then was 5th with similar June 21. He's a threat off that May 9 affair, but his other Final Time Ratings don't stack up with the best in here. We'd limit him to minor award status if anything.
Fantasy Free will be fitted in blinkers after a poor effort vs $16,000 claimers May 30. He ran Ok vs $20,000 claimers May 8 and the drop in class might help, but his recent form is modest at best. NOTES: Will be fitted in blinkers today. Cousin Joe ran well vs $16,000 claimers in two straight prior to finishing 4th with $20,000 claimers June 28. He looks like a solid class fit at this level and should get the right stalking trip. We'll count him a possible threat. Yodelen Dan beat this kind May 9, then came right back to easily beat $10,000 claimers June 6. He won at Del Mar in 2007 going a flat mile and looks like one to fear in the late going. Hunter Creek was claimed off a modest effort with $16,000 sprinters June 19. He earned show dough with $20,000 routers three back and his new barn has a strong record routing and when taking the blinkers off. He looks like a good class fit and might offer some value at the windows. He also ran 2nd at a flat mile at Del Mar last year. NOTES: Claimed (from Bill Spawr) for $16,000 June 19. He will race without blinkers today. Guiding Hand ships in from Sun Ray Park where he most recently pressed the pace and held 2nd with $20,000 claimers sprinting June 26. He beat that kind routing at Sunland Park Feb 22 and will add some early speed if he scratches in. He's sharp and his numbers are strong, but we're inclined to make him prove where he belongs on this circuit.

For fans of the Pick Six Scramble, simply employ the following strategy with the horses listed on the Quick Pick Page. The requirements are two ‘singles’ somewhere in the Pick Six. Place your ‘singles’ in their proper spot and then select three horses in each of the other four races. Label the first three horses ‘A,B,C,’, the second set as ‘D,E,F’ the third set as ‘G,H,I’ and the fourth as ‘J.K,L’. Use the following patterns to build your nine $2 tickets. In this example our ‘singles’ are in legs 2 (s1) and 4 (s2) of the Pick Six.
ANALYSIS: Gallatin's Run blew a clear lead in the lane when runner-up with this kind June 13. The colt finished almost seven lengths clear of the show horse in what was an improved effort, exactly what you want to see from a talented second-timer. The lightly-raced runner lands Rosario once again (Hollywood's leading rider gets off Via Zavata), he's "right there" on numbers and receives the HF 15a to get the money. Of course, the one to beat is 'Zavata. That one has been in the money in all three starts to date and exits a Chart-topping effort. Though he's yet to really be close under
the line, the numbers make him a serious threat. Payment Approved checked in behind 'Zavata back on June 20. The colt had to have needed that one having been absent since September, however, and would do much better on paper off his September run at Oak Tree. Don't be surprised if he perks up with recency. CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance have been: Via Zavata and Gallatin's Run :25.0 - Payment Approved :25.6.

RACE APPRAISAL
HORSE COMMENTS Via Zavata in the money in all three starts to date, exits a distant but solid runner-up try with this kind July 5. That race narrowly tops the Charting in pretty good time for the class and the Last 15 trainer stats indicate that everything Hollendorfer sends out is pretty much "live." Consider this guy a big threat. Pious David hasn't been out since his 2-year-old season when failing to distinguish himself as a runner. In a new barn (formerly with Todd Pletcher), he worked fast June 20, but most of the other works haven't been as swift. The connections are top-flight, though, so give this one some respect, especially if bet. Stuck On Go is out of a barn that does well with rookies (nearly 17% winners). That July 10 work was a good one, but there has been nothing since and Arambula isn't one of the trainer's "go to" riders. Tough call on the $400,000 juvenile purchase.
Payment Approved finished right behind Via Zavata when 4th at the level June 20. That's a race he likely needed after nine months on the shelf, though, so some improvement seems likely. He also had traffic trouble along the inside in the late going that day. Expect better, as his Sept 27 run would top the Charting. Gallatin's Run moved up nicely when the heavy favorite in a similar affair June 13. The barn has been streaking (note the Last 15 starters stat) and this guy was well clear of the show horse in that last one. He retains the leading rider at Hollywood Park, too. Stayonit is a well-traveled sort who shows up for Mullins for the first time (formerly with Bobby Frankel). Though he has a little lick, he hasn't been close at the wire. For the record, this marks his first as a gelding.

FIRE NUMBER - For over 25 years, Today's Racing Digest has been producing our Comprehensive Performance Rating, the CPR. While we, of course, are retaining the CPR as well as our other handicapping numbers, we are proud to introduce an all-new rating, our best yet, and we call it the FIRE number. It stands for Final Race Equation and it’s a true speed rating that accounts for a horse’s speed during the ‘entire’ race, not just his final time. We developed the FIRE number with every tool available to us. And, unlike the Beyer number, we’ll highlight the projected FIRE number right next to each horse’s comment. This is the figure to which we expect the horse to run TODAY! When using our new FIRE number, keep in mind that each two points represent approximately one length, regardless of distance or surface. A horse with a 96 FIRE is a half-length better than a horse with a 95 FIRE. A horse with a 97 FIRE is a full length better than a horse with a 95 FIRE. A horse with a 98 FIRE is one-and-a-half lengths better than a horse with a 95 FIRE and so on. It’s just that simple. First-time starters and foreign horses will be marked with an 'X'; horses whose ratings are '0' exit very poor performances and lightly-raced horses who seem better than the FIRE number would suggest will get a '?', read this last symbol as 'capable of improvement'.
THIRD RACE - DEL MAR Today's Racing Digest
ANALYSIS: Draft Choice has changed running styles and found success lately. The former frontrunner has come from off the pace since Rosario took over May 15 and the change produced a win and a good 3rd when stepped up to this class level last out. He gets a field packed with speed and should be rolling late. Speaking of speed, give Whatever Whenever a chance to take these the distance if he gets in off the also-eligible list. He showed some grit in defeat in his July 4 return and may prove the speed of the speed. The pace should be well contested if he's a no-show and that should enhance the chances of the other off-pace types. That
group includes Watch Over Me, who has been no worse than 3rd in 2009; Mi Rey, who regressed at Hollywood Park, but may find that this race plays more like Santa Anita where he ran well this winter; and, Honouramgonfriends, who is dropped again, but may get first run into the stretch. CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance have been: Draft Choice :23.3 - Mi Rey and So Behold :25.1 - Saxophone :25

RACE APPRAISAL
HORSE COMMENTS No Thinkin Allowed gets blinkers after working a blazing half-mile here in the a.m. on Saturday. Of course, blazing Del Mar works don't always translate to improvement in the p.m. as the track seems to be much deeper in the afternoon after the morning moisture has been burned away. However, his Santa Anita form was good, so perhaps he'll bounce back now that he's not at Hollywood Park. "Blinkers on" is not a winning move for Becerra. Mixed signals. Watch Over Me won twice for $8,000 at Hollywood Park, likes the Polytrack, too, and has been no worse than 3rd in 2009. His recent winning marks are modest, but he can grab a piece and is exotics material at the very least. There is plenty of speed to set up his balanced attack. Be Realistic (ARG) is a professional pack horse who is back around one turn after chasing and tiring for $8,000 May 24. The time off is a potential plus and he was a much better sort in the winter. The blinkers added last time come off. So Behold was generally overmatched in three starts after beating $12,500 NW2 types Jan 30. He figures in the exotics picture at this class level, though. Senor Afortunado beat $12,500 NW2 types as the tepid favorite June 18 and this represents a class jump and the charting suggests that he'll need to improve to repeat. Draft Choice likes this layout and was competitive for this tag June 21. He tops the charting off that last one and gets the hot riding Rosario as well. This former speedball has turned into a one-run type and that seems to have perked up his career.
Honouramongfriends had the wraps come off when dropped sharply to the $16,000 level June 19, his second start since returning from Sunland Park. He made a mid-race move before weakening and is now dropped to the bottom. He appears headed the wrong way, but Mullins is not afraid to drop and win. The one may prefer real dirt, though. Brother Man is back quickly after being claimed from Marty Jones for $8,000 July 10. Miller adds the blinkers after this one failed to show his usual zip and he figures to be forwardly placed again. His May 6 and March 28 races would top the charting, too. He could take some catching. Afleet's Design has cheap speed and figures to be throwing in the towel turning for home. Unfortunately, it won't be a cool, souvenir Del Mar Beach towel. Mi Rey (ARG) didn't seem to handle the Cushion Track at Hollywood Park, but his Santa Anita form would make him a winner here and he ran 2nd in his one previous DMR sprint. He ran poorly at even money June 13 and has worked just once since then, but Bejarano takes over and this one may be finishing. Nene may want more distance and is racing in generally poor form. He's up in class, too. Saxophone upset $8,000 claimers off the bench July 10. Pender is good with comebackers and this one ran OK for this tag before hitting the sidelines in December. He rates another odds-beating chance. Whatever Whenever came back from a year's vacation to be a chasing 2nd behind a Lone 'F' winner July 4. The frontrunner did well to hold 2nd considering that he wants the lead for his best chance. The charting suggests that he's quick enough to clear if a starter. Beware.

Shown below is the order of finish that would be likely if each horse repeated a representative race. There are many reasons why this may not happen. Foremost of these is that, like humans, horses have good and bad days. Also, today's race may differ from the representative race due to changes in the post position, weight carried, class, track, surface, pace characteristics etc. Nevertheless, plotting and studying times from previous performances is a basic part of handicapping. If the representative race was not on a normal track, the times shown have been adjusted by the track variant applicable. The underlined fractions indicate the leader(s) at that particular point in the race. Except for the LF = Last Fraction, which indicates the fastest closer(s). X = No recent or available time at or about the distance.

ANALYSIS: Our Bellini Bikini is a half to a debut winner, her barn does good work with Maiden-Claiming rookies and that 59.3 drill July 16 suggests she is fit. We'll give her the HF 15a. Bye Bye Hollywood pressed the pace and held 2nd vs. $40,000 Maiden-Claimers in her debut May 21. That was a solid effort and apprentice Santiago Reyes made a big impression at the concluded Hollywood Park meet. Another good
effort would be no surprise. Deputy Judy R N has a quick 47.0 gate drill for her bow and her trainer/jockey duo has been on fire as of late. Tote and paddock inspections seem in order. Fair Kisses didn't get away cleanly in start #2 when 5th vs. $40,000 non-winners July 2. Her debut wasn't bad, though, as she showed more early speed June 11 and she is reunited with Martin Garcia. We'll give her a look for the exotics.

RACE APPRAISAL
HORSE COMMENTS Bye Bye Hollywood pressed the pace and held a distant 2nd in her debut vs. $40,000 Maiden-Claimers May 21. That was not a bad effort and the sharp apprentice Santiago Reyes is in the boot. She appears to merit contender status. Deputy Judy R N is a half to five winners including two 2-year-old winners and a full to a winner. She has seven works since May 7 capped off by a solid gate move July 11. Her trainer/jockey duo has been on fire as of late and tote and paddock checks seem in order. NOTES: $40,000 ylg. Dixie Saint is related to three winners including a juvenile winner. She shows 10 drills since Feb 1 and has low-profile connections. It appears safe to watch one. NOTES: $5,000 ylg. Our Bellini Bikini is a half to a debut winner with 10 works since May 13 with a solid five panel move July 16. By a hot young sire, her trainer can fire fire time out and we'll tab the tote for clues as to her readiness. NOTES: $30,000 2-year-old. Punctual is a half to a non-winning starter with eight drills since May 15 all at San Luis Rey Downs. The trainer and sire stats are average and others seem more enticing on the win end.
NOTES: $1,000 ylg.Fair Kisses pressed the pace and tired to 4th in her debut vs. $40,000 non-winners Jun 11, then could not recover from a poor break July 2. She is reunited with Martin Garcia and a clean start can only help. Action Gal is the first foal of her dam to start with 10 works since July 16. She should be fit with four straight works at five furlongs or more, but the trainer and sire stats are sub-par. Tab for next time? NOTES: $19,500 2-year-old. Don't Reiterate finished midpack after a slow start in her bow vs. $40,000 non-winners July 2. Her stable tends to give their youngsters a few races and we'll keep watching. NOTES: $50,000 ylg. Wicked Trip is a half to two winners including 2-year-old winner Nathan Ridge ($130,000+). She has12 drills since April 17 all at Fairplex Park and is by a solid win-early sire. However, her barn isn't known for firing first time out and a low-profile rider is up. We'll pass on the win end. NOTES: $8,500 ylg.

FIFTH RACE - DEL MAR Today's Racing Digest
ANALYSIS: Tijuana Tuesday has won three of his last five starts in No Cal and finished 2nd vs. $12,500 stock on dirt at Pleasanton July 1. Back on a synthetic surface, he has good early speed, attracts a top rider and calls a winning barn home. We'll give 'Tuesday the HF 15a. Ballistic Heat is back to his winning level off his 5th vs. $16,000 types May 10. He co-tops the charting off that win May 6 and may bounce back. Exceeding is an old-timer who owns two wins over the Del Mar Polytrack and is off a 3rd vs. similar may 6. Talamo knows him well and he could be one to fear late. Twin Turbo is back after two clunkers over dirt in New Mexico.
Gomez was up for his last win Dec 31 and that was for $10,000. He may look much improved this afternoon. High Investment has earned minor awards in four straight vs. tougher and may enjoy the drop to this level. While he has not had much success over this layout, he has the numbers to compete with these and seems difficult to rule out. CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance have been: Twin Turbo :23.5 - High Investment and Roar Of Eagles :23.9 - Spot The Diplomat :24.2
Conditions: CLAIMING FOR FOUR YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD. Weight, 124

RACE APPRAISAL
HORSE COMMENTS Si Chimi checked in 4th vs. $8,000 sprinters July 10. He earned minor awards in his previous two starts at today's level, but he is not exactly a win-type and seems best used in the exotics only. High Investment is another who likes the minor awards, but he has faced tougher as of late and is back around one turn off a route vs. $20,000 stock June 28. His barn has good stats with the route to sprint move and he could make an impact at this level. His record over this strip is not encouraging, though. No Grande finished 3rd in a split of the $8,000 sprint July 10. That effort plots down the list and his win vs. NW2 $12,500 are considered two levels lower that today's class level per Digest standards. We'll look elsewhere for the winner. Oldtophatandtails defeated NW2 $12,500 types May 25, then was 4th vs. open $12,500 claimers July 4. His numbers are a bit soft and we'll limit him to a minor award. Tijuana Tuesday is quick from the blocks and was 2nd vs. $12,500 sprinters at Pleasanton July 1. He won two straight prior to that at Golden Gate at and below this level and Rosario takes the call for a high-percentage stable. The gelding may be underrated in the Fractional Charting. Spot the Diplomat is usually part of the mix and was 3rd vs. $12,500 sprinters July 4. He co-tops the charting off his 2nd vs. this kind June 21 and we would not be surprised to see his stable have a big Del Mar meet off their sub-par meet at Hollywood Park. However, this guy has only one once from 19 starts over a synthetic surface. Mixed signals. Exceeding usually takes plenty of action at the windows and was 3rd at this level May 6. He owns two wins over the Del Mar Polytrack and his
numbers are easy to like. While he figures to be short odds again, he also figures to be one to fear in the stretch. Doneitagain plunges in class off his 6th vs. $32,000 turf sprinters May 25. Espinoza sticks with him and he should be within striking range throughout. Still, such a negative pattern is difficult to like and we'll look elsewhere for the winner. Roar of Eagles has his price tag cut in half off his 6th vs. $20,000 sprinters July 5. His trainer has been cold as of late and he may need a pace meltdown to threaten today. Ballistic Heat finished 5th of six vs. $16,000 claimers May 10. He beat this kind prior to that May 6, though, and co-tops the charting. Bounce back candidate? Russian Liquor has been a tough one to figure as of late with two poor efforts in a row against tougher. He would plot on top off his May 3 effort on grass and he is a winner over this Polytrack. The drop off a claim is usually a neg, though, and Sadler does not use one of his "go to" riders. Tough call. Twin Turbo was in good form prior to two back-to-back clunkers in New Mexico. Back in the Sadler barn, he is reunited with Gomez who was up for the win at this level Dec 31 and has the numbers to compete with these. We would not rule him out. Scotty's Ladd is the first of two also-eligibles and he finished 10th off a long layoff vs. $20,000 stock July 5. Based on that one, he may need another race. Friendly Half has not been seen since his 4th vs. $20,000 sprinters Dec 5. He shows only two works at five furlongs for this and his trainer rarely fires with layoff stock. It may be safe to watch one.

GALLATINS RUN 07/14 Sa/ft 5f 100.2h

forwardly for Jeff.
STUCK ON GO 07/10 Sa/ft 5f 58.4hgBlew away Cecil trained Empress Of Dance. Flashed big speed but seems
to be speed crazy right now.

RACE
BE REALISTIC 07/10 Sa/ft 6f 112.4hFinished all out with his head up in the air. Not sure as good as time makes
it appear.
HONOURAMONGFRIENDS 07/20 Dmr/Clocker CommentShows only one work, but we see him almost five times a week on the track
standing at the gap just taking it all in. He is a very intense animal whoknows only how to do things one way like he's all in. He is hard on himself.
07/19 Dmr/ft 3f 37.0hBig bodied horse can be seen daily and can be very hard on himself. He
does everything intense. Ears pricked forward here and giving off the rightbody language. Finished in 25 flat while in a canter through the lane.
NO THINKIN ALLOWED 07/18 Dmr/ft 4f 45.4h
Had to do a double take on the time as this claimer seemed to reallyfreak over the Poly. Dynamite half.
SENOR AFORTUNADO 07/18 Dmr/ft 4f 47.3h
Was let run and went steady enough. Fresh off sharp efforts.
WATCH OVER ME 07/12 Sa/ft 4f 49.2hStill a picture of health with real light 1/2 mile. Big bodied gelding can be
hard on himself.
4th
RACE
ACTION GAL 07/11 Sa/ft 6f 116.0hFinished heads up but looks second best through the late stages while
working with Guiltbyassociation. Has shown some speed but stick andstamina might be a bit of a question mark off this pattern.
BYE BYE HOLLYWOOD 07/03 Hol/ft 5f 103.2hGradually increased her tempo as the drill went on. Finished up in full
stride. Good drill. 06/26 Hol/ft 5f 100.3h
Worked decently to get off vet's list after being scratched ten days earlier forwarming up unsound. Worked in 100.3, but later trainer La Croix was fined
after the horse tested in excess of anti-inflammatory med flunixin, whichwould have helped this filly in this work. Thus, he had to work again to get
the horse off the vet's list without excessive level of permitted medication.
DEPUTY JUDY R N 07/11 Hol/ft 4f 47.0hg
Worked from the gate inside of Judge Joan, and Droumeragh, who is
an older turf horse. She went well in 46.3 inside of the two Mullinsrunner. Looked good galloping out inside of the two. Seems to be
precocious and has some gas for good barn. 06/21 Hol/ft 3f 35.4hg
Caught the eye showing speed this morning. Two-year-old comesfrom good barn and she was a bargain at the sales. She was also
training at PEG, Training facility and often the farms can really buildgood bone in young horses. Should run well in first or second start.
DONT REITERATE 07/10 Sa/ft 4f 50.2h
Needed all out pressure to get to the wire and achieve this time.
OUR BELLINI BIKINI 07/16 Hol/ft 5f 59.3hWorked OK here and finished in 47.3 for Brian. Finished doing best. Looks
like a quick type. 06/18 Hol/ft 3f 36.3hg
Quick looking Koriner filly went with gate speed from the barriers. Looksquick.
5th
RACE
BALLISTIC HEAT 07/18 Hol/ft 5f 59.4h
Finished strongly while best of team in an impressive finish for level ofhorseflesh. Worked with maiden-claimer Sweet Alli Marie.
07/05 Hol/ft 5f 103.0hCould have been given a breeze. Under a hammerlock hold on the inside of
maiden Bling Star Dreams.
DONEITAGAIN 07/11 Sa/ft 4f 48.2hFinished willingly but appears to be playing some catch up through this
pattern--May need a race.
FRIENDLY HALF 06/21 Sa/ft 5f 101.3hcame home in 24.2, but may need this first race back.
RUSSIAN LIQUOR 07/15 Sa/ft 6f 114.1h
Seemed to be steady overall in this work with some urging to hold fitnesslevel.
TWIN TURBO 07/13 Sa/ft 6f 114.1h
Finished final 1/4 in 24.2. Has some progressive stamina and has built onthat in this series.

BRINSON 07/14 Sa/ft 6f 112.3h
blinkers on for a hard but honest drill. Seemed a bit winded past the wire.Did go in 112.2, however.
MAKE MINE VODKA 07/12 Sa/ft 5f 102.0h
One paced and nondescript overall--typical Carava type move.
SATELLITE 07/12 Sa/ft 5f 105.0hAppeared a bit flat and listless--expected more.
7th
RACE
ACCLAMATION 07/16 Dmr/ft 6f 112.3h
freaky type finish in 11.4 for the last furlong. Rallied well and and wasdoing it the right way to boot.
BRUSHBURN 07/17 Dmr/ft 4f 50.2h
love these easy, sharp looking 1/2 mile drills. This one seems loaded.
CAPT SPARROW 07/09 Sa/ft 4f 48.3hFinished 1/4 in 24.2 and searching for a niche and level these days. May
not have find it in this spot, but went handy enough.
DEE DEES LEGACY 07/18 Dmr/ft 4f 48.4hhandy and willing here. Not sure if he strides like a router.
07/12 Hol/ft 5f 103.0hBlue collar drill. Kept to her task without having to be asked for too much.
DEPUTY FLYER 07/10 Hol/ft 8f 144.4h
More of a gallop than an actual work. Not asked to get serious at any point. 07/03 Hol/ft 4f 48.1h
This one has me confused. Moves with class. Needs to transfer this stylisha.m. form.
J P JAMMER 07/14 Sa/ft 5f 100.3h
Solis asked him to go by the rabbit,Incandescent Red, and he did with hisusual game manner, however, was being used hard late.
SEMINOLE NATIVE 07/12 Sa/ft 5f 100.4h
Finished in stride and healthy off last try on the turf.
UNBRIDLED ROMAN 07/17 Dmr/ft 6f 115.0hMight have been just getting used to surroundings. One paced type move.
07/10 Hol/ft 4f 48.0hRecent barn transfer came home with a healthy bounce. Made a good
appearance. 06/20 Hol/ft 6f 112.0h
Worked from the pole and finished the last half in 47.4. Looked good. Niceworker.

AFLEET EAGLE 07/12 Sa/ft 6f 113.3h
No pressure through the lane while heads up with a highly regardedArmstrong runner--healthy appearance shipping home for Vladimir.
AZUL LEON 07/11 Hol/ft 5f 100.0h
Worked inside a stable-mate. Had plenty of run left in the tank as the duocrossed the wire. Big run out.
01/22 Hol/ft 4f 48.3b
very good work here. Went off in 24.4 and finished very nice in 48.3.
Looked good on the gallop out as well.
BACKBACKBACKGONE 07/18 Dmr/ft 4f 47.1hFinal 1/4 in 23.1 and finished sharp speedwise. Seemed to like the Poly.
DREAM NOW 06/28 Hol/ft 5f 101.0h
Been watching this one making it hard work in gallops. You can tell he is onthe stiff side, but when he works like in this drill you couldn't tell anything
was wrong. This is the typical result of a horse working on bute and lasix.Went well enough, but was looking ragged for a while in his gallops.
GRETSKY 07/16 Hol/fmdu 7f 127.2h
He is not the ''great one'', but he is "the not bad one''. Went in 114 for thelast six furlongs. Finished well down the lane in a three horse set.
07/09 Hol/fmdu 4f 52.4hRan right over a cone at the top of the lane but it did not slow him down
any. Hitting the ground with good results.
HERR MOZART 07/13 Sa/ft 5f 59.4hFinished all out to catch Afternoon Liason. Finished honest enough but was
fully extended all the way inside the last furlong.
LESSON IN DECEIT 07/08 Sa/ft 6f 116.2hFinished all out and appears to be giving his best. Pretty slow clocking over
the training track
MARK S THE COOLER 07/12 Hol/ft 5f 102.2h
Toyed with work-mate in team drill. Wanted to do a lot more but rider kepthim under a snuggy hold.
METEORE 07/15 Sa/ft 7f 128.0h
Not asked and best over Chalula One. We have been accustomed toseeing this from him.
RENDEZVOUS 07/17 Dmr/ft 6f 112.2h
Bounces right over the Poly with nice energy. Was going well toachieve swift clocking for six furlongs.
07/05 Hol/ft 6f 111.3hFast drill began to get a little dicey in the conclusion. Under pressure and
not holding a straight line. 06/27 Hol/ft 5f 59.4h
Worked very well here and finished in 24.1 for Hollendorfer. He hasbeen a great private purchase. He acts like a runner. Went in 35.3 and
59.4.

NO KA OI 07/11 Sa/ft 5f 101.2hRunning easy and finished in 24 flat for the last 1/4. Might wake up.
PRINCESS SUSAN M 07/17 Hol/ft 4f 48.1h

AFLEETS PICASSO 07/13 Sa/ft 4f 48.2hFinished final 1/4 in 24.1. Steady and useful enough to route at this level.
ELEVENTH HOUR 07/17 Dmr/Clocker Comment
She was just galloping today but the key is she looks unscathed off scaryevent on Fri night. She was on her way to victory when she propped,
spooked and tried to go over rail.
JET SET LASS 07/17 Dmr/ft 5f 101.2hFinished all out with short strides--Doesn't act like a router.
PROPHETISE 07/08 Sa/ft 5f 105.2h
Finished last 3f in 39 flat. Did it well in hand and looked OK considering thecircumstances.
RUBY SLIPPERS 07/15 Sa/ft 4f 48.2h
Best of team over an unnamed mate. Finished OK and galloped out well, too.
WHERES MY LIMO 07/12 Sa/ft 6f 114.4h

The date of the selected, representative race is shown preceded by a letter indicating which track ( A = Aqueduct, B = Bay Meadows Fair, B = Bay Meadows, D = Del Mar, F = Fairplex Park, FO = Fresno, G = Golden Gate, H = Hollywood Park, K = Keeneland, MO = Monmouth, S = Santa Anita, S = Santa Anita/oak Tree) and followed by a number indicating how many races back it was.

TRACK BIAS Race tracks play differently every day due to weather, normal maintenance, etc. Sometimes the track seems to favor no particular running style and no part of the track seems
better than another. That’s not always the case, though, and trip handicappers have long made their money by noting whether the track favored one type of running style or another
and then following the horses that ran ‘against the bias’. We divide track bias into two types on the main track. There are running style biases in which either horses with speed, we
call them Front Runners in this table, or no early speed, Late Runners, have an advantage. There are also days when the rail is better than the outside and vice versa. These biases
run from moderate to strong to dominant. We will code the biases as follows: 1= Moderate, 2= Strong, 3 = Dominant. The strong and dominant biases deserve the most attention.
In turf racing, we report the position of the auxiliary rails, as ‘rails UP’ can promote speed. The strong and dominant biases deserve the most attention. In turf racing, we report the
position of the auxiliary rails, as ‘rails UP’ can promote speed.

SIXTH RACE - DEL MAR Today's Racing Digest
ANALYSIS: Satellite is the in-the-money HF 15a. He's up two class levels, but he's finished 1st or 2nd in his last four and he's run OK here. He's in better form than most of these, too. However, his number spiked up in that last win and his 'usual' 125 Final Time Rating would make him just one of many with a chance at the brass ring. As a result he might be best used as a Superfecta key horse. Deluxe Cat is put up for sale by co-owner/trainer Bruce Headley and should fit with this group. Like Satellite, he should get a good trip stalking the pace, which figures to be contested by All Money No Love and Johnny's Time. The latter is intriguing as he
has tactical speed and this former $5,000 Arizona claimer may get a great trip from the outside. Brinson has been freshened for this and his Feb 23 win over $16,000 4-year-olds gives him an odds-beating chance. Another to consider is Make Mine Vodka. He's not down in class and his form is poor, but he's been freshened for this, goes for a hot barn and his Santa Anita form would make him a winner. He'll be a quick pick longshot. CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance have been: Make Mine Vodka :30.1 - Storm Machine (Arg) :30.3 - Satellite :30.5.
Conditions: CLAIMING FOR FOUR YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD. Weight, 124
lbs. Non-winners of two races since April 22 Allowed 2 lbs. A race since then Allowed 4 lbs. Claiming Price $16,000, if for $14,000, allowed 2 lbs. (Maiden races and Claiming races for $12,500 or less not considered).

RACE APPRAISAL
HORSE COMMENTS Swift Demand is dropped one level after being claimed for $20,000 two months ago. He's been training steadily for Ellis, who is coming off a strong Hollywood Park meeting. This one's lone score vs. winners came vs. softer $25,000 NW2 types, though, so today's price cut seems warranted. He could have a say. NOTES: Claimed from (John Sadler) for $25,000 May 25. All Money No Love is another coming off a claim. He dominated $12,500 NW2 types when red-tagged July 10 and Solis wastes no time running him back. He was able to clear on the front end in that win and had plenty left while earning his usual mid-120 Pace Rating. He may not clear this group, though, and that may sap his stamina. NOTES: Claimed (from Ron Ellis) for $12,500 July 10. Brinson beat $16,000 4-year-olds Feb 22, a race that puts him close on paper. He didn't seem to care for HOL and has been freshened two months (it's noted that he finished slightly ahead of Swift Demand - above - May 25). He has enough speed to stalk and is odds-beating material. Satellite has been very effective with lesser this year, as he's finished 1st or 2nd in his last four sprints, mostly recently beating $10,000 when dropped one level June 21. The stalker should be in the hunt throughout again, tops the charting and is a definite contender again.
Deluxe Cat is a lightly raced 5-year-old gelding who beat Starter types May 9 and then was given one chance vs. Allowance stock and failed that test. He's put back up for sale, charts close and can bounce back into contention. Make Mine Vodka is not down in class and yet he has not been close recently. However, his Santa Anita form was solid and a bounce back is possible. He's an instinct play for those that love Digest angles. Johnny's Time chased the pace and weakened vs. Allowance types when shipped to California for a July 5 race at P-town. He earned a decent final figure, though, seems as quick as any in here and this former $5,000 claimer may fit nicely in this spot. He's another with upset potential. Midwesterner won for $32,000 to end the Santa Anita meeting April 8, but was never a threat in three starts at Hollywood Park. Instead, of trying him for $25,000 on this surface (in hopes that he would perk up on Polytrack), Knapp drops him two levels. His best race makes him a threat, but it's not clear that he can produce it. Storm Machine (ARG) is making comeback start #3, showed signs of life when dropped in for $12,500 July 11 and may run on and complete the Superfecta.

SEVENTH RACE - DEL MAR Today's Racing Digest
ANALYSIS: How the early pace comes up today is a bit difficult to figure, as the heat lacks a dedicated frontrunner. Either Acclamation and/or Dee Dee's Legacy could wind up on the front end and both have legitimate chances, especially the former, who is lightly-raced and eligible to move up off his July 2 return. Whatever the case, the one to fear is Brushburn. That one ran on for 3rd in his June 11 comebacker over the sod. That was a fine performance vs. open runners and now he's back on a track where he had some success in 2008. He's close on paper and, actually, is tied for the best last-out Final Time Rating (129) in the field with J P Jammer.
Make Brushburn the HF 15a. Along with Acclamation, 'Jammer should be considered a contender, as he's out of the open ranks and ran well with this kind in March. Of course, he tends to prefer the smaller awards. Kalookan Storm is a hard-knocking No Cal invader with a chance, while 'Legacy turned in a decent effort in his seasonal bow and could make some noise with these. CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance have been: Seminole Native :25.6 - J P Jammer :26.5.

RACE APPRAISAL
HORSE COMMENTS Kalookan Storm beat similarly-rated stock on turf up north May 24, then finished a close 3rd with that kind June 14. The No Cal invader boasts a fine record over synthetic (two wins) and is no stranger to the winner's circle (four wins). The win spirit should serve him well on this circuit. Unbridled Roman ran on for show dough with this kind March 19. In a new barn (formerly with Chris Paasch), he's been idle for nearly three months and has, for the most part, been a bit of a disappointment. At least he's run well outside the Stakes ranks, which gives him a look here. Acclamation made his seasonal bow with similar on turf July 2. The Final Time Ratings continue to rise, too. Of course, the two main track outings, both sprints, have been modest and the barn has been a little cold of late (see Last 15 stat). Capt. Sparrow a three-time winner, exits a next-to-last place showing with $25,000 claimers June 20. That May 1 3rd with stronger claimers tops the Charting, but the last two outings have left something to be desired. Seminole Native is from a low-profile stable. The 7-year-old seems a shadow of his former self, though the numbers indicate he remains a Superfecta contender.
Deputy Flyer has not looked sharp in three starts against winners, all sprints. Perhaps he'll fare better routing since he's bred to go long. Perhaps. J P Jammer is a nibbler who is lowered out of the open Allowance ranks where he checked in 3rd June 25. The barn has been doing well of late (see Last 15 stats) and he finished 2nd with Cal-breds March 19. Another decent share is within his grasp. Dee Dee's Legacy was beaten less than two lengths on turf vs. this kind June 27, his first start since October. He shows two runner-ups sprinting with this kind in 2008, he was just 3/2 to win last time and is eligible to move up with recency. Puype and Gomez do well together too (4-for-10). Brushburn back on the "main" after a show dough turfer June 11, ran well over this surface sprinting here last year. That return should have given him some well-needed conditioning and he's tough stuff on numbers as it is. Despite the draw he looms as a major player.

EIGHTH RACE - DEL MAR Today's Racing Digest
ANALYSIS: As a sign of the times, the opening day Oceanside Stakes did not draw enough horses to be split into two or three divisions for the first time since 1988. The good news is this year's edition does look like a competitive affair and probably worth playing. Frontrunners have won their share of Oceansides in the past and the chart-topping Afleet Eagle certainly looks like the one to catch if he can transfer his dirt form to turf. He's yet to be headed in a route and his last two wins both earned 140+ Final Time Ratings. Most of the other speed is stuck on the also-eligible list as well, so barring scratches he could be long gone. We'll make him the Digest HF 15a. Herr Mozart didn't run too badly in the Grade II Cinema June 21 and figures to have his share of backers at the windows. He's a solid contender. Meteore took awhile to get going, but he's won two straight and shows a steady rising Final Time Ratings pattern. His connections are top notch and he might be this good right now. Rendezvous returns from an East Coast swing and you can probably
throw out his race in the slop June 5. He might make an impact in his return to California and drop to this level. Mark S The Cooler didn't run well in a Grade II at Colonial June 20, but he's two-for-two at a flat mile on the grass and could rebound at a decent price as the Digest HF 20. Azul Leon was better as a sprinter last year and didn't run well in a comebacker at Charles Town June 20. That said, he was facing top class company as a 2-year-old and shouldn't be dismissed too quickly. Finally, Gretsky is up in class, but charts well and is reunited with Martin Garcia, who was aboard for his Maiden win May 30. He also could spice up the exotics in a race where hitting the Trifecta/Superfecta could be quite an accomplishment and should pay well. CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance have been: Lesson In Deceit :22.2 - Mark S the Cooler :22.5 - Herr Mozart :23.4 - Gretsky :23.5

RACE APPRAISAL
HORSE COMMENTS
EIGHTH RACE - DEL MAR Today's Racing Digest Herr Mozart exits a decent 4th-place finish in the Grade III Cinema Handicap June 21. He earned a solid rating beating bottom-level Allowance foes at a mile March 25 and looks like a strong contender in this restricted Stake. Lesson in Deceit earned a strong rating winning the Tempe Handicap at Turf Paradise Marhc 14, but was no factor in the La Puente April 11 and finished midpack in the Alcatraz at Golden Gate May 23. Class seems a bit of a cloud. Rendezvous Broke slowly and finished up the track in the slop in the Grade III Hill Prince at Belmont Park June 5. He was 3rd in a mid-level Allowance on the grass back there May 14 and beat $40,000 Maiden-Claimers on the grass at Calder Nov 6, 2008. We'll throw out that last race in the slop and give him a chance to bounce back with these. NOTES: His June 5 race was taken off the turf and run in the slop. Azul Leon finished up the track in the Red Legend Stakes sprinting at Charles Town June 20, his first start of the year. He was a Grade II Sprint on the main track at Del Mar last year, but has some proving to do right now and was better sprinting than routing last year. He was facing top class horses last year and might perk up with recency. He's one we'd want to see good odds on before heading to the windows. Flashmans Papers (GB) pressed the pace and tired to last in the Grade III Cinema Handicap June 21. He won the Eddie Logan at this distance on a good turf Dec 27, but his form in his last three starts hasn't been too good. He'll need to turn things around to be a factor. Mark S the Cooler looked overmatched in the Grade II Colonial Turf Cup at Colonial Downs June 20. He beat bottom-level Allowance foes in So Cal May 13 and that race puts him in the hunt on paper. Both of his wins were at a flat mile on the grass, so maybe he'll do some surprising at a price. Gretsky finished 2nd with bottom-level Allowance foes July 2. That effort earned a solid rating and puts him near the top on paper and Garcia was
aboard for his Maiden win May 30. Maybe he's not as outclassed as it might look on paper. Afleet Eagle has yet to be headed in a two-turn race as he wired $50,000 Maiden-Claimers on the main track April 10, then shipped up to Woodbine to wire bottom-level Allowance types on the main track May 3. Both races earned strong Final Time Ratings , so he might be tough to catch if he can transfer that form to the grass. Meteore has won two straight on the grass, most recently beating Rainbow Goose (below) in a bottom-level Allowance June 11. He shows a rising numbers pattern and you certainly can't knock his connections. He may be this good right now. Backbackbackgone pressed and tired to 3rd in a bottom-level Allowance July 2. He should be part of the early pace, but might be better sprinting than he is around two turns. NOTES: Had the blinkers removed July 2. Position A tries two turns for the first time after a near miss vs bottom-level Allowance turf sprinters June 19. He's another that should add to the early pace if a starter, but seems content with lesser awards. Nashoba Express charts well down the list off his runner-up try with Cal-bred bottom-level Allowance foes July 2. He's lightly raced and his numbers are improving, but class seems a cloud right now. Dream Now has been freshened since finishing behind a couple of these when 4th in the Harry Henson turf sprint April 22. He's worked 12 times since raced and will be trying two turns for the first time if a starter. He's in a cagey barn and might do some good at a price if he scratches in. Rainbow Goose set the pace and tired to midpack in a bottom-level Allowance common to a couple in here July 2. He'd run well in his previous two turf starts and might bounce back a bit if he can slow the pace down just a bit. Classwise, he seems a bit of an outsider, though.

NINTH RACE - DEL MAR Today's Racing Digest
ANALYSIS: Dona Amelia exits a runner-up try behind Brought It for $25,000 June 25. She's now run well twice for that tag without winning, so today's easier assignment seems warranted. The mare has run well routing over this strip and may make the last run in a field with a bit of pace to it. Since it's our belief that the drop given to Brought It is a suspicious one and puts her form into question, this race has a wide-open feel to it. Per the Charting, most of these have a look at the win, including
Jen's New Chapter, Princess Susan M, Kneeling's Pride and Wickednwackyingrid. Give their comments (see below), their Data Lines and various stats a look when filling out the Superfecta ticket. In short, this race could produce nice exotic payoffs. CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance have been: Dona Amelia :29.2 - Brought It :29.4.
Conditions: CLAIMING FOR FILLIES AND MARES FOUR YEARS OLD AND

RACE APPRAISAL
HORSE COMMENTS Dajolie (GER) is back around one turn, but has yet to display any stick going short or long. Perhaps the drop will help in that regard. We'll see. Princess Susan M lost by a nostril for $16,000 June 27. Claimed by Art Sherman that day, she's just in the middle on paper, but retains Espinoza and shows solid trainer marks with "1st CLM". We know she fits well for $16-$12.5, but will she be able to handle today's step up. Cassablanca (GB) shows up after three months on the bench while having her claiming price cut in half. No threat behind Jen's New Chapter (below) when last seen, she's probably in the right spot classwise and has a look in the Trifecta at least. Brought It shows up for $5,000 less than the price she won for June 25. Just one work in a month seems a concern in addition to the drop off the win. The "suspicious drop" makes us wonder if she'll repeat that last one, though it must be said that she loves to win races (6-for-19). Kneeling's Pride pulled in last of four behind both Brought It and Dona Amelia June 25. The mare beat tougher in February, however, and stacks up well on numbers. It looks like she'll be in the mix. No Ka Oi off since June 6, has finished behind a few of these this year and seems in modest form at best. She didn't get off to the best of starts
last out (see Notes) and is out of a hot barn (see Last 15 stats). Perhaps she'll get closer on the drop. Wickednwackyingrid pulled in behind a couple in here when the third head on the wire June 27. The claim by West is a positive, though the fact she couldn't score despite being dropped six class levels last time is a concern. Dona Amelia (CHI) is down a notch following a runner-up try June 25. Favored in two straight now, she has shown good form routing here and appears dangerous with the slightly easier assignment. Perfect Hostess is last on paper off that July 3 return. The trainer stats are modest, too, so... Jen's New Chapter has been 1st or 2nd in 10 of 16 career starts to date. That "try" is easy to like and she exits a narrow win over a couple in here June 27. The mare has run well over the layout and appears a leading win contender, though it should be noted her numbers aren't anything special. Debating Society knocked off $25,000 "non-winners of two" stock in his June 21 comebacker. Rosario sticks her on the raise and the Jones barn is a good vein of form right now (see Last 15 stats). The Final Time Ratings are soft, however.

TENTH RACE - DEL MAR Today's Racing Digest
ANALYSIS: Hannah's Moment is the frontrunner to collar, but Afleet's Picasso always figures within striking distance from the rail, while Prophetise is out of the straight Maiden ranks and could make the last run. 'Picasso moved forward when lowered in with $40,000 non-winners sprinting June 28 and figures to do even better under these class conditions for a barn that wins with 18% of its sprint-to-route runners. Prophetise showed no speed and failed to scare straight Maiden turfers June 14, her U.S. bow. These are much easier obviously and the Charting
has her right on top. That pair will share HF 15a status. The aforementioned 'Moment figures very much in the Trifecta mix, while closer Sure Tiz is also out of the no-tag ranks and goes for a barn that excels with getting its droppers in the winner's circle (21%). Eleventh Hour improved July 3 and also figures to be sitting a good trip. CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance have been: Prophetise and Saintly Spirit :32.1 - Not Unusual :32.4.

RACE APPRAISAL
HORSE COMMENTS Afleet's Picasso got closer in start number two June 28, a $40,000 Maiden-Claimer. Today's further drop in class can only help, she stacks up well on numbers and lands a ground-saving post. No reason to believe she won't run well here. Eleventh Hour stalked the pace, got the lead and then hit the rail when winding up off the board July 3. The filly was favored in that one, she resides in a top barn and looms as a contender if she can mind her manners. She's a Single doesn't look like a single right now. In fact, she looks more like a toss at this point. The added distance might help some. Jet Set Lass is an 11-time loser who has a little pace, but not much more to offer. Prophetise out of the straight Maiden turf ranks, showed decent form over Polytrack in England and can only be helped by today's softer class assignment. In fact, that U.S. bow co-tops the Charting. Ruby Slippers failed to scare $20,000 turfers up north June 4 before finishing far back here July 3. She's an outsider. Not Unusual really hasn't threatened and should have gotten closer when dropped in with $40,000 non-winners June 25. Having said that, she's
done her best running going long and may appreciate today's return to the distance game. Hannah's Moment seems likely to be on the lead in this field and, given the scarcity of talent signed up, could take some catching under Bejarano. She's back where she belongs classwise and owns solid Final Time Ratings too boot. Saintly Spirit in a new barn (formerly with Chuck Peery), ran well routing with tougher earlier in the year, though that June 21 run over a good track was poor. The recent numbers aren't much either, so she has something to prove for new trainer Sadler. Where's My Limo has shown little in two sprints to suggest that a win is forthcoming this afternoon. Dixie Dot Chance continues to churn out modest runs. Pass. Sure Tiz wasn't close June 11, but did show a little life vs. straight Maidens routing that day. Though she draws poorly, she's given a big class drop for this and stacks up well on numbers. Note the Gallagher barn does very good work with class droppers (over 21% winners). Grandpa's Legacy was on the lead for a quarter-mile before bearing out and giving way June 4. Though Sadler is a top trainer, this dropper has much to prove.

HOW TO READ TRACK BIAS The main track can be biased toward front-runners or late-runners and/or horses racing on the inside or outside part of the track. To define how the track was playing we've added a track bias column in the data lines. The following symbols will be used in that column: An F = A Front-runner's or speed bias An L = A Late-runner's or closer's bias An I = An Inside bias An O = An Outside bias Each will carry a modifier of 1 (moderate), 2 (strong) or 3 (dominant). Turf races may have a frontrunners or late-runner's bias as well as an indication whether the auxiliary rails were up (up) or down (dn) Examples: F1/03 = Moderate Frontrunner and dominant outside biases. L2/DN = Strong Late-runners and the rails were down on the turf.
1. Distance – This is the distance of this particular race. If this was a turf race, we’d also
note that here.
2. Conditions – We list the race conditions here. This particular race is a Starter Allow-
ance.
3. Track Profile – This feature gives you an idea of what kind of running styles (e.g.,
frontrunners, pressers, etc.) have been winning at the race’s distance. We list the
number of races included in our study (22, in this case), then list the type of running
style and the win-percentage. For example, Frontrunners (―F‖) have won 22.7% of the
22 races at this distance while Late-Runners (―R‖) have won just 4.5%.
(F=frontrunner, P=pressers, M=midpackers, R=Late-Runners.) 4. Race level – The Digest assigns a number to each type or class of race. In this case,
the race is a 130 on our class scale. This number allows you to compare races of
different types to determine which races are stronger, the same class or weaker. Five
points equals one class level.
5. Race Conditions – This is an abbreviation of the Conditions of the race.
6. Purse – This is how much money is up for grabs for this race. In most cases, the
winner usually receives about 55 percent of the purse.
7. AFTL – The acronym stands for Average For The Level and are ―par‖ times for the
class. In other words, this class of animal should run these times over a normal sur-
face. Compare the horse’s times listed in their Data Lines (past performances) to the
AFTL to see which horses have come close to running to par for this class.
8. Favorites – We list the percentages for winning favorites and favorites in the money
under these class, age, surface, and distance conditions. Believe it or not, certain races
produce more upsets than others and we try to give you the heads up by providing
these stats.
9. Horse – We list the horses’ names here, in post-position order. Also, sometimes
you’ll see a symbol after the name and this indicates the horse is having some type of
equipment change. For instance, a ―#‖ indicates the addition of blinkers, a ―@‖ indi-
cates blinkers are coming off and ―(L)‖ signifies a first-time Lasix user. We also note
betting entries by a letter (―A‖ or ―B‖) before the name.
10. Jockey – This lists the jockey for each horse. When you see a dot (―.‖) after the jockey’s name, it means this jockey is replacing the jockey used from the previous
race. An ―x‖ after the jockey’s names indicates he is an apprentice.
11. Fire Number – This is the horse’s FIRE Number, a speed figure that takes into ac-
count each and every time recorded by the horse during the running of a race. The
higher the number, the faster the horse.
12. Weight & Change – We list how much weight the horse is expected to carry here, as
well as the difference between today’s weight and the weight carried in its last race.
13. Age/Sex – How old if the horse, you say? We list that here, along with the horse’s
14. RRL - Recent Race Level. This is the Race level of the horse’s last race. Compare this
number to the Race level in the Race Header to quickly determine whether the horse is
up or down in class.
15. RCL - Recent Competitive Level. We list the Race level where the horse has recently
been competitive. An ―x‖ in this column indicates a horse hasn’t been competitive at
any level recently.
16. CPR - Comprehensive Performance Rating. Another Digest speed figure, this one if
the oldest of the Digest’s speed numbers. Once again, the higher the number, the
faster the horse.
17. Total – This column is the total of RCL + CPR. It gives you a class and speed figure
all in one.
18. PER - Performance Early in Race. We list the running styles for each horse. Just as we list in the Track Profile feature, F=frontrunner, P=presser, M=midpacker, R=late-
runner
19. Handicapping Factors – Each horse usually receives certain Handicapping Factors
(HF), which serve as a type of shorthand for us to communicate certain things about a
horse to you. Most important in this column is our ―push‖ factors. When we like a
horse we’ll use a 2 (love the horse), 15 (really like), 15a (like) or 20 (longshot).
20. Equipment – This is the equipment the horse has been or is scheduled to wear.
B=blinkers, R=shadow roll, RW=rear wraps, FW=front wraps, 4W= four wraps,
G=goggles
21. Trouble – If the horse was in trouble in any of its races, we list that here. A ―1‖ indi-
cates a horses last race, a ―2‖ a race back, etc. If the number is in parentheses (e.g.,
(2)), that means it was self-caused trouble.
22. Off Track – If the horse is proven over an off track, we list the Track Variant for that
day here.
23. Best Prev Sur Dis - Best Previous CPR on the surface or distance. Pretty self explana-
tory. Whatever the distance or surface of today’s race, we note the best CPR he’s
earned.
24. Past Class - Whatever the horse’s highest proven Race level, it’s listed here. This let’s
you know how classy a horse once was.
25. Average RCL – This is an average of the horse’s recent Race levels where it has been
competitive. 26. Last CPR – Simple, it’s the CPR (remember, the CPR is a speed figure) from the
horse’s last race.
27. Fractional Chart Order of Finish – Lists the top finishers according to the Digest’s
popular Fractional Charting (a projected race using representative performances from
each participant in today’s race).
28. Average Times – The times listed on the ET (Expected Times) row are those expected
from today’s field based on previous performances (these are the best times at each
call in the Fractional Charting). The AT (Average Times) are based on the times high
class horses run at the distance/surface. The AFTL (Average For The Level) times are the
―par times‖ for today’s class of runners. In other words, they are the average times run by
horses at today’s particular class level.
29. Analysis – In this section, Digest handicappers provide their assessments of today’s race,
emphasizing pace and class and highlighting contenders and top plays.
30. Closers – Which horses finish fastest? We provide the top finishers here. This informa-
tion is compiled from the Fractional Charting.
31. Horse Comments – Digest provide information about each horse and assess their
chances. Trouble notes follow each horse’s comments. (This feature may not be included
in some issues.) 32. Horse name – Simply put, this is the horse’s name. Just so you know, a horse’s name is
limited to 18 characters and spaces…that’s the rules.
33. Trainer/Jockey – The horse’s trainer and today’s rider are listed, along with their record
(starts, wins, 2nds, 3rds) when teaming up over the past three months. In this instance,
trainer Powell and jockey Rosario have had 10 starters together, with two wins, no 2nds
and one 3rd the past three months.
34. Age/Breeding – The first number is the horse’s age, followed by his sex. After the dash
(-), the horse’s sire is listed. In parentheses is the sire’s offspring’s win percentage on turf
(T), synthetic (S), and in the mud (M). This is followed by the horse’s dam, which is then
followed by the dam’s sire (a.k.a. - the mom’s dad).
35. Trainer Stats – We list all the pertinent trainer stats in this section, such as the trainer’s
record from his last 15 starters (LAST 15) and how the trainer does with any moves the
horse may be making today (i.e., going from dirt to turf (D/T), route to sprint (R/S), etc.).
36. Notes – What trouble has the horse encountered and when? The Digest lists this in abbre-
viated fashion.
37. Course Records – Shows how the horse has done on today’s surface and at today’s track.
We list the record as starts, wins, 2nd, 3rds.
38. Works – Recent workouts are shown here. The info includes the track, the date, the time
of the work, the condition of the surface and how the work ranked relative to other times
recorded that day.
39. Last 10 FIRE – These are the last 10 FIRE numbers earned for the horse, just for conven-ience.
40. Track – Indicates at what track the horse’s race occurred.
41. Date & Race – Lists the date (MM/DD/YY) and the race number (after the dash) of the
horse’s race.
42. Distance/Surface – This is the distance, as well as the surface of the race. ―T‖ indicates
the race was a turf race. Sprints (under one mile) are noted in furlongs, whereas routes
(one mile and over) are noted in miles, plus additional distance.
43. Post Position & Key Race Winners – The first number is the horse’s post position for
the race, followed by the total number of all the horses in the field. The numeral after the
dash indicates how many horses returned from the particular race to win their next starts.
Theoretically, the higher the number, the strong that particular race.
44. Weight – This is the weight carried by the horse.
45. Trainer/Jockey – The horse’s trainer and jockey for the particular race is noted here.
46. Track Condition – Was the track fast, muddy or sloppy? Was the turf firm or good? We
note that in abbreviated form here. (FM = firm, FT = fast, GD = good, etc.)
47. Track Bias – A tremendous Digest feature. This column displays any bias that was in
effect during the horse’s race. We note the type of bias (O = outside, I = inside, F = speed
bias, L = late-runner bias) as well as the strength of the bias on a scale of 1 to 3, with 1
being a mild bias and 3 being a dominant bias.
48. Race Type – Lists the type of race in abbreviated format.
49. Race Conditions – These are the conditions of the Race Type. 50. RCL – Race Competition Level. The level represents the strength of the race on the
Digest’s class scale. Comparing these numbers to one another allows the handicapper to
see if the horse was moving up or down in class from race to race.
51. CPR – The number is one of the many Digest speed figures. This is the horse’s CPR for
each race.
52. Finish Position & Beaten Lengths – The first number is position the horse finished the
race, followed by how many lengths he was beaten (or won by if the first number is a ―1‖)
crossing the wire.
53. Odds – The Digest lists both the horse’s Morning Line odds and the Actual Odds at post
time. This gives you an idea if the horse was bet (perhaps he was ―live‖) or not (―dead on
the board‖).
54. Track Variant – Sometimes surfaces can be slower or faster than normal for various
reasons, usually due to weather or track maintenance. The variant adjusts the surface
speed to account for these variances, and we list it here just because we believe in trans-
parency.
55. Position at Each Call & Beaten Lengths – The first number is the horse’s position at
each call followed by his/her time at those calls (these are not the leaders times, they are
this horse’s particular times for the race). All times are adjusted to today’s distance and
surface, taking into account differences in track pars and variants (routes are adjusted to
route and sprints to sprints, but not routes to sprints or vice versa). This allows for easy
comparison among different distances and between tracks. In essence, the Digest does all the work so you don’t have to.
56. Last Fraction – The final fraction the horse earned in the race. The final fraction has
also been adjusted to account for differences in tracks, surfaces, pars and variants.
57. Pace & Final Time Ratings – Under the first column is the Pace Rating earned, a num-
ber which takes into account the speed the horse displayed through the first two calls.
The second column lists the Final Time Rating, a speed figure that takes into account only
the final time of the horse.
Today’s Racing Digest EXPLANATION OF LAYOUT AND FEATURES TODAY’S RACING DIGEST is designed to simplify the handicapper’s job by evaluating past performances and relating them to today’s race. To that
end, the Digest provides the following on each page:
ANALYSIS: All six of these plot within less than three lengths at the wire, and they appear about that hard to separate. Looking for a price, we have some interest in Warrens Stormalert as a potential improver. He was ambitiously placed in the Snow Chief Stakes April 25, his first as a winner and first route, and, though he faded toward the rear, the effort figures OK
with these. Low-profile connections should prompt some decent odds, so he's the HF 20 (longshot). CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance have been: Green Card James :31.0 - Benezit :31.3 - Troubletimesthree :31.

RACE APPRAISAL
HORSE COMMENTS Troubletimesthree has usually run pretty well in five starts at this level, but was favored in three of them and finished farther back than usual April 15. He charts in the hunt, but he seems to have a bit to prove. NOTES: Outrun April 15. Mild rally March 18. Mild wide rally Feb 19. Lacked racing room entering the stretch Jan 25.
Warrens Stormalert is bred to route, but the April 25 jump up to the Snow Chief Stakes for his first try with winners and initial route was pretty ambitious. He tracked a Lone 'F' leader and faded badly. Still, the effort gives him a shot on paper, so he can't be denied a chance on the drop. NOTES: Wide around the first turn, chased and tired April 25.
