SHOWBUZZ FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 2012 7ROMEL M. LALATA, Editor
T he Campaign begins with these three impor-tant words: America, God, Freedom. Threewords that almost guarantee incumbency to
any US politician who mentions them.
Here in the Philippines theequivalent would be Dios,Bayan, Pamilya. And yes, politicians here mention thosewords with impunity whetherat the Senate, the barangayhall or the church pulpit.Mention those words andyou’re automatically on thegood side.
Will Ferrel’s latest comedytakes advantage of that ideaand takes a dig at the US elec-tions which of late has turnedinto a corrupt, cruel andsometimes outright bizarreshow. Kind of like ours.
Ferrel plays Cam Brady, are-electionist Democrat con-gressman in the traditionallyDemocratic-leaning state ofNorth Carolina where he isrunning unopposed for his nthterm. Brady’s campaign takesa nose-dive after an indiscre-tion is leaked publicly. Thisprompts big-business-interestbillionaires to fund an unas-suming, soft-spoken, born-to-wealth Marty Huggins (ZachGalifianakis) to run under theconservative Republican partyand challenge Brady.
The comedy runs situationafter situation where the ex-perienced politician tries toout-politic the newbie, untilthe inner tiger in Hugginspushes Brady to the wall, upto the point where one can nolonger distinguish which can-didate deserves to earn the ti-
tle Honorable.I wouldn’t want to glorify
this as a true satire, in thesense that The Campaign takesan absurdist approach to themudslinging associated withdirty political campaigns, butdoesn’t actually comment onreal political issues that wouldprovoke discussion. Ferrel andGalifianakis are game withtheir roles, but Dermott Mul-roney is the third personalityin the film as master manipu-lator and campaign managerextraordinaire Tim Wattley.
Gets my vote at portrayingwhat we, non-Americans, al-ready know: how laughableAmerican politics has become.Like ours.
Katy Perry: Part of MeDirected by Dan Cutforth, Jane
LipsitzKaty Perry also mentions
God in her concert-docu KatyPerry: Part of Me. The showwas so candy-colorful it hurtmy eyes. Consider this a be-hind-the-scenes of her year-long concert tour and not areal bio-pic.
The big come-on to thisshow are her cheeky, colorfulcostumes and her catchy tunesmost of which come from heralbum Teenage Dream. Inter-cut with her behind-the-stagepreparations during her Cali-fornia Dreams tour in 2011(the Manila stop isn’t in themovie) are snippets of howKaty began her career, herwhirlwind romance with co-median Russell Brand, and thefew people who have madeher the international pop starthat she is now.
Growing up as a daughterof a Pentecostal minister, Katybegan singing in her church ata very young age and waspretty much sheltered (or lim-ited) into church life and mu-sic until she turned 18 andheard Alanis Morisette’s OughtTo Know. It’s the most revela-tory bit in the entire showthat one can deduce a lotabout her evolution as womanand an artist. But she says shemaintains a personal relation-ship with God.
It’s a must-see for Perryfans. The movie is an effectivetool in marketing Perry as theartist who sings the anthemsof the young generation. Justthink of it as an extended mu-sic channel special. If you seeit in 3D with good speakers, itmay just feel like a concert al-together.
Now excuse me while I re-play Firework in my musicplayer.
