It is also the first nationalbeauty pageant to take the real-ity show format on televisionthrough the months-long Buhay

And to further push its beau-ty tourism advocacy, Mutya hasheld its coronation ceremoniesin some of the countrys touristspots, including Davao, Subic,

    Puerto Princesa and Aurora.

This scheme is akin to theMiss USA pageants strategy of

having different host states ev-ery year. And on its 42nd year, Mutya

will make its most daring moveby having a female-dominatedexecutive committee. It will beheaded by Fortune Ledesma, along with Tati Fortuna, manag-ing director of ScribbleworksProduction, Inc.

    Fortuna, whose Scribble- works Production signed a fran-chise management deal withMutya, said our company is se-r i o u s a b o u t e l e v a t i n g t h i spageant to the highest level.This is a huge task and we areall very excited to implementnew ideas on this project.

But along with introducingupdates to the pageant, Fortunasaid she still aims to go back toits roots, focusing on the Filipinafor her beauty, brain and as anambassador of this beautifulcountry.

    We want to transform the

    organization and make it the

most prestigious beauty pageantin the country, she shared.

Aside from being an ambas-sador for Philippine tourism, thepageants winners also representthe country in internationalcompetitions such as the Miss

Asia Pacific, Miss Tourism Inter-national and Miss Intercontinen-tal pageants.

Its former titleholders include Alice Crisostomo, the late RioDiaz, Tetchie Agbayani, Bong Di-mayacyac, Mutya Crisostomo,Michelle Aldana and Kirby AnnBasken, who also representedher fathers native Norway inthe 2007 Miss Universe beautypageant.

For this years competition, screenings were held in MetroManila, Cebu and Davao. The fi-nal screening will be on July 24at Resorts World Manila, wherethe coronation night will also beheld on Aug. 28.

    Dindos

    challengeBy Vanessa HidalgoL

A SALLE coach Dindo Pumaren is pretty sure aboutit: The Green Archers are underdogs when they facereigning titleholders Ateneo Blue Eagles Saturday in

the first round of UAAP mens basketball at the AranetaColiseum.

We are underdogs and the Ea-

gles are favorites, Pumaren toldINQUIRER LIBRE when asked to as-sess the chance of the Archersagainst the Eagles, who are seek-ing a three-peat.

To be fair, Pumaren is simply

stating the truth. The Archershave lost six straight to the Eaglessince 2008 and from the looks ofit, Pumaren, who took over thecoaching reins from his multi-ti-tled brother Franz, needs toweave his own magic to stopthe Ateneo juggernaut.

Pumaren, however, isnt inthe mood to surrender. Fact is,he is confident that after going0-6 the past two seasons, thingsare rosy for the Taft-based hoop-

sters. They are the bigger playersbut we will contest their post

plays and pick and rolls, saidPumaren.

Pumaren also believesthat he has an ace

named Joshua Webb, who can negate Blue EagleNico Salvas all-around plays.

Though Webb did not playwell in our last three games, Iknow that he (Webb) will step upfor Saturdays game.

EXPERIENCETen of the currentBlue Eagles were part of last yearschampionship squad and seven ofthem have won two titles.

Including the Final Four and Finals,Ateneo, with the core of Eric Salamat,

Kirk Long, Nico Salva and Ryan Bue-nafe, has gone a combined 32 - 3 dur-ing the previous two seasons.

FRONT COURT While Ateneomay no longer have Rabeh Al-Hussainiand Nonoy Baclao to terrorize thepaint, the Blue Eagles front court re-mains formidable as the likes of Salva,Justin Chua, Frank Golla and new-comers Jason Escueta, Arthur DelaCruz and JP Erram have all done theirshare on both ends of the floor.

Salva (team best 12.7 ppg) has

emerged as the go-to-guy of Ateneowhile Chua finally had his breakoutperformance against UST last Sunday(17 pts., 11 rebs, 4 blks). Meanwhile,Golla, Escueta, Dela Cruz and Erramhave been perfect complimentaryplayers.

The Blue Eagles are presently tiedwith NU for number one in terms ofpoints in the paint allowed (23.3ppg).

    Weaknesses

PERIMETER SCORING ANDTHREE-POINT SHOOTINGAteneoranked first in the league in three-point shooting (31.5%) and perimeterscoring (29.3 ppg) last season.

However, in this campaign the BlueEagles currently rank last and second-to-the-last in three-point shooting(15.9%) and perimeter scoring (15.7ppg), respectively.

While the departure of last yearschief gunner Jai Reyes may be the ob-

vious reason in the massive drop-off,the loss of center Rabeh Al-Hussaini

may have also contributed as he wasknown to have forced opponents to

double-team, resulting to more openoutside shots. With no Rabeh to command extra

attention inside, Ateneos shooters arehaving a tougher time getting theirshots off this season.

ROTATIONCoach NormanBlack has admitted that he still issearching for the right rotation as evi-denced by Ateneos different startingline-ups during its three outings andEric Salamat, Kirk Long and FrankGolla have been the only players tohave started every game.

Ateneo doesnt have a true pointguard and bringing the ball down hasbeen a shared responsibility amongSalamat, Long, Buenafe, Emman Mon-fort and Juami Tiongson.

    DLSUStrengths

DEPTHLa Salle currently hasnine players averaging at least 15minutes of action with Simon Atkinsaveraging the most playing time at24.7 minutes per outing.

As a result of playing time beingdistributed almost evenly, the Archerspresently rank first in the league inbench scoring at 36.7 points per out-ing.

FORCING TURNOVERSCoachDindo Pumaren may have replaced hisbrother Franz, but the system, whichfocuses on the dreaded pressing de-fense, has remained in place.

La Salles depth, primarily in thebackcourt has enabled Pumaren theluxury of constantly shuffling his men, allowing the Archers to put fresh bod-ies on the court to apply their merci-less press at any given time.

The Archers presently score aleague-best 21.3 points off turnoversand rank second behind Adamson inforced turnovers at 21 per game.

    Weaknesses

INEXPERIENCELa Salle is theyoungest team in the league since ithas seven rookies, five of whom arefresh out of high school, and foursophomores.

In a big game against Ateneo, there

may be a possibility that the young

Archers may be overwhelmed by theimmensity of the match and the rival-ry.

However, in last years first roundmeeting La Salles rookie-laden squad(they had six rookies) didnt shownerves as they stretched Ateneo to thelimit before losing in overtime.

FRONTCOURTTaking awaynothing from UE and UP, La Salles

two victories came at the expense ofteams without dominant big men.Against NU, the Archers frontcourt

was obliterated by the inside presenceof Cameroonian rookie EmmanuelMbe, who tallied 21 points and 19 re-bounds.

Ateneos frontcourt may not be asimposing without Al-Hussaini and Bac-lao, but nonetheless, Ferdinand, JovetMendoza, Yutien Andrada, Papot Pare-des and Maui Villanueva might havetrouble containing their Ateneo coun-terparts.

    LA SALLE needs

    Jovet Mendozasinside presenceto neutralize

    Ateneos heightand heft edge.

courtmen of the Archers areshooting better that their Ateneocounterparts. But he said thatanything can happen consider-ing that this will only be the

fourth game for both schools.Weve won the last six

games, but those wins hap-pened in the past and will notmatter on Saturday. This is anew game and we need to beat

La Salles press , Black con-cluded.

Now, its going to be along and hard climb forthe Archers to break thespell. Dennis Eroa

NORMAN Black happily embraces thethought that defending champion Ateneowill take the floor as favorite when the

Blue Eagles renew their storied rivalry with theDLSU Green Archers in the UAAP at the AranetaColiseum.

I have no problem withthat. Its okay if we are thefavorites and La Salle is un-derdog, said Black, who isknown for being cool evenduring the most trying partof a roller-coaster game.

Black, however, is notgoing to be lured into a

false sense of security. He knows beating

La Salle this Saturday will neverbe easy.

Its always difficult to playLa Salle because the Archers arealways in shape. Im sure thatthey are ready to play on Satur-day, Black said. He addedthat a La Salle-Ateneo tiff

will never be ordinary be-cause of the storied rival-ry between the two

Rivalry RemixedBy Ruel S. De VeraSunday Inquirer Associate Editor

THESE sweet-shooting days, popular songs oftenuse elements of older or classic songs and rein-

vent them in a dynamic new way.

So it goes with the UAAPsAteneo-La Salle game. The sin-gle most potent basketball rival-

ry in the Philippines returns toscreen and screams this Sat-

urday with the very newmixed in with the old re-

    liables.The two-time de-

    fending championAteneo Blue Eagles

    come into thisgame missing

    three majorcontributors

    from lastyears title

    team:

    RabehAl-Hus-saini,

    JaiReyes

    andNonoy Ba-

clao, as well as theinjured swingman Chris

    Sumalinog.Together with returning head

coach Norman Black, the BlueEagles bring height and heft fortheir ambitious try at threestraight titles, often deployingat the same time two of theirburly big men: 6-5 Jason Escue-ta, 6-5 Justin Chua, 6-4 FrankGolla and 6-7 JP Erram.

But while the aggressive KirkLong and the gifted Nico Salva

have picked up the scoringslack with timely scoring, the

Loyola-based squad willlook to captain Eric Sala-mat and fiery Emman

    Monfort to provide needed

    stability in the backcourt.

For the Blue Eagles to takethis game, the little men willhave to come up big.

Backcourt players, ironically,is what the De La Salle Green

Archers have in spades. Newcoach Dindo Pumaren, himselfa former DLSU point-guard, hasturbocharged the vaunted DLSUpress with La Salles seven rook-ies, anchored by resurgent vet-eran Simon Atkins, who seems

to have discovered his shootingtouch, and headstrong forwardJoshua Webb.

Samuel Marata and Joel To-lentino bring perimeter shoot-ing from the bench. This DLSUlineup is almost unrecognizablefrom the Green Archers last ti-tle squad, back in 2007.

That makeover continues toevolve, but some things neverchange. La Salles frontlineplayersin particular centers

Ferdinand and Yutien Andra-dawill have to deliver strongperformances to cancel the BlueEagles size advantage.

The numbers are alreadycompelling. Ateneo is looking forits seventh straight win over theTaft dribblers, something un-thinkable when one looks backat DLSUs 1990s supremacy.

    TheBlue Ea-gles andGreen

Archerseach boast ofthree champi-onships in the2000s, includingthe last three.

    Every Ateneo-La Salle game is

already a fantas-tic nullifier: fansfor each side say

you can throwout the stat sheet

when these two meet. They rise to the occasion

and rise against each other. Therivals have a competitive dimen-sion all their own, one which ig-nites its followers passion.

Even as two of its pastheroes now suit up in the same

colors for the Smart-Gilas na-tional team (Ateneos Chris Tiuand La Salles JV Casio), theircomrades still suit up in oppos-ing blue and green.

But the fates have conspiredto add even more tension tothis cage equation. Not only dothe Blue Eagles and Green

    Archers meet toting the same

    exact win-loss records

(2-1), but they doso in a UAAP Season

73 that has been sounpredictable, title-favorites Far EasternUniversity Tama-

raws (the Blue Ea-gles lone defeat)has been tested of-ten, and once-futileNational University

Bulldogs display teeth (the up-set of La Salle).

All the teams look especiallydangerous this year, almost as ifany gamenot just the Ateneo-La Salle classicis up for grabs.

Yet despite all that, the Ate-neo-La Salle remains Philippine

sports most enduring duel, fullof sold-out games and all-outaction, the UAAPs only surething in a year of delicious un-certainty.

Regardless of who emergesvictorious on the hardcourt, it isa rivalry that, ever evolving andever progressive, remains astimeless as ever.
