TODAY’S LEARNING TARGET

#4 I can show relationships of organisms through food chains, webs, and trophic levels.

(you will be writing this down tomorrow)

CH 15 NOTES #3

FOOD WEBS AND TROPHIC LEVELS

VOCABULARY:

HERBIVORE –eat only plants

EX: rabbit, cow, deer, horse

CARNIVORE –eat only animals

EX: lion, spiders, bobcat

OMNIVORE –eat both plants and animals

EX: birds, humans

Page 4: TODAY’S LEARNING TARGET #4 I can show relationships of organisms through food chains, webs, and trophic levels. (you will be writing this down tomorrow)

SCAVENGER – organisms that eat dead animals EX: vultures, crayfish, rats, raccoons

DECOMPOSERS – break down dead plants and animals

EX: bacteria, fungi, worms

IMPORTANCE * they return nutrients of

dead organism back to the soil - plants use this to grow

( cycle)

FOOD CHAIN – order that one organism feeds on another

FOOD WEB – a network of interacting food chains

because organisms eat more than one kind of food!

FOOD CHAIN FOOD WEB

What do you notice starts all food chains?

TROPHIC LEVELS – levels of feeding in an ecosystem

1. PRODUCERS – plants (autotrophs –make own food)

2. PRIMARY CONSUMER –animal that eats plants

3. SECONDARY CONSUMER – animal that eats a primary

4. TERTIARY CONSUMER – animal that eats a secondary

TROPHIC LEVELS LESS ORGANISMS AS YOU GO UP SO THEY HAVE ENOUGH FOOD!

ECOLOGICAL PYRAMIDS

ENERGY PYRAMID – shows amount of energy passed to each trophic level

some energy from food eaten is used for muscles, breathing, digesting, etc.

Energy in their body that can be passed on is

only 10%

Add the arrow and “less energy” on your notes

TERTIARY CONS.

SECONDARY CONS.

PRIMARY CONS.

PRODUCERS (plants)

LESS ENERGY AVAILABLE AS YOU GO UP
