Game of the day comes at Win-chester City, who will be looking to end Whitchurch United’s unbeaten record in the league.

GOOD afternoon to everyone attending today’s match at Love Lane, including the players, officials and sup-porters from Verwood Town and the match officials.

It has been an indifferent week for the club on the pitch in the last seven days. Victory last Saturday in our local derby against Alresford Town was much needed but we were very unfortunate not to come away from Whitchurch with at least a point on Wednes-day evening.

The weather conditions contributed to a crazy start to the match – both sides had scored within the first two minutes and it was 3-1 to Whitchurch after only 20 minutes of play.

However, our second half performance was a huge improvement and the only thing we didn’t do was score the goals which could have put us five points clear at the top of the table.

We have enjoyed a fantastic start to the season and we certainly aim to maintain our position at the top of the division but as the last few matches have shown, it is going to be a tough season and we are going to have to show plenty of character and resolve if we are to achieve that.

It’s a wide open division at the moment and you could argue the case for any of about half a dozen clubs winning the title at this stage.

There isn’t much between the sides at the top of the table – the key to success is going to be consistency. The side who can keep winning games in a division where everyone is capable of beating each other will be the one who claims the title in April.

There’s a long way to go. For now all we can do is keep trying to win football matches.

MANAGER’S notes

I WOULD like to welcome Verwood Town to Love Lane this afternoon for this Pre-mier Division encounter.

Carl Poore’s side find themselves towards the bottom of the Premier Divi-sion table at present but I am sure they will come to the Lane this afternoon looking to snatch three points from us.

I was pleased to get back to winning ways last Saturday with our victory against Alres-ford Town.

They gave us a scare by coming from 2-0 down to make it 2-2 but we had too much for them in the end.

On Wednesday night at Whitchurch I thought we were very unlucky not to get some-thing from the game.

The half time scoreline of 3-2 was a fair reflection of the first half but we dominated the second half.

Shortty

only had to make one save for us in that half but the Whitchurch keeper made four or five saves and the same number of shots were blocked as well.

We made some early mistakes in the game which cost us but I couldn’t

have asked for anything more from the lads in that second half. The only

thing we didn’t do was stick our chances away.

One piece of good news from Wednesday’s game was that Jason Silver returned to action after a spell on the side-lines. I should also have Andy Todd available again for today’s game.

There are no real updates to report on the rest of the injury

list at the moment.I hope the lads will be back on it today so we

can win you another three points to

reward your fan-tastic support here at the Lane.

DETAILS of who Petersfield Town will face in the second round of the Ports-mouth Senior Cup have been released.

The Rams will take on the B team in the competition of Hampshire Premier League side Paulsgrove.

The game has now been scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, and it will be played here at Love Lane.

The cup tie will kick-off at 7.45pm and normal matchday ticket prices will apply on the night.

RESERVE rams TODAY’S visitors

VERWOOD is steeped in history. A no-ticeable spot for visitors is the Monmouth Ash Public House which is said to be built on the site where the Duke of Monmouth hid in a tree to avoid his pursuers.

Can the rumour be believed that he was the first referee to officiate at a Ver-wood FC match?

The first written records date back to the early 1920s and a copy of the notice to Dorset FA confirming ground directions and club colours indicate that the club has a similar colour scheme to now.

Until 1986 the club’s home games were all played on the recreation ground, except for a short period of time when a piece of spare ground near Coronation Road was used. This in fact was the best period in the club’s playing record as Ver-wood were unbeaten for two years.

After the end of the Second World War, de-mob saw ex-players reunited and the club continued it’s affiliation to Dorset, re-establishing its winning ways and bringing minor and junior trophies to the village. This also bought back the local hostilities, particularly the annual battle against Cranbourne.

Memories recall one particular game when police were called from Wimborne to control the crowd and restrain Rev Williams from striking the referee with his walking stick.

The ambitious move to Potterne Park in 1986 and a strong willing committee brought the club in 1989 to Hampshire League football for the first time in it’s 70 years of history.

The wisdom of this move was soon confirmed with the high league positions that were maintained over the next three of four years, eventually culminating in

promotion in 1993 to Hampshire League Division 1.

It was during this period that with the growth of the village into a town the club’s new name Verwood Town Football Club was established.

In 2004-05 the Wessex League amal-gamated with the Hampshire League and formed three new leagues. Verwood Town were entered into the new Syden-hams Wessex League Division Three.

Two seasons and a great deal of effort off the pitch and on the pitch finishing third, the club was rewarded with promo-tion into the newly renamed Sydenhams League (Wessex) Division One.

The following season, the good play-ing form continued with a top six finish in the first season in Division 1. During the summer of 2007, the club’s ambitions were finally realised with the erection of floodlights needed to maintain their status in the Wessex League.

In 2009-10 the club made its first entry into the FA Vase and built on this during 2010-11 by entering the FA Cup for the very first time. In the FA Vase the club enjoyed a very good run, completing five matches before being put out by a team who reached the quarter finals.

Off the field the club continued to grow and the ground continued to be improved with enhanced fencing and groundwork.

In 2011-12 the reserves team joined the Wyvern Combination Football League in it’s first season of operation while the first team helped the club claim it’s great-est achievement to date by winning the Wessex Division 1 title.

In 2012-13, Verwood finished in 14th place in the Premier Division and last season they finished in 19th position.

The Rams deserved something from the game after they dominated the sec-ond half but Longmeadow has not been a happy hunting ground for them in recent seasons and that poor run continued after the hosts raced into a 3-1 lead after only 20 minutes.

The poor weather conditions and a floodlight failure which left one part of the pitch in the gloom for the entire game, contributed to the crazy start to this match.

The home side were in front after only 30 seconds when what looked to be a routine clearance for keeper Matt Shortt saw him hit the ball straight at Jamie Mansell and he fired the ball into the unguarded net.

However, Petersfield drew level a minute later when they went straight down the other end of the pitch and won a penalty. Warren Hunt smashed the spot kick into the net.

Whitchurch regained the lead on 17 minutes when a corner from the right found Jack McCarthy only a few yards out from goal and he bundled the ball home.

Three minutes later and it was 3-1 when Shortt repeated his horror clear-ance of the opening minute, this time finding Ryan Lambert on the edge of the area and he fired his low shot into the net.

Petersfield hit back again though and they made it 3-2 after 34 minutes when

Alex Lowley tried his luck with a shot from the edge of the area.

It took a huge deflection to wrong foot home keeper Brad Snelling and flew past him into the roof of the net.

The Rams should have been level just before half time when Ash Howes shot from a similar position to where Lowley had scored from but somehow Snelling got his foot to the ball to divert the effort around the post.

This save set the tone for the second half which saw the visitors have plenty of chances but due to saves and blocks they just couldn’t force an equaliser.

Shortt had to make a finger tip save to push Lambert’s effort around the post but that was only real chance the home side had on goal during the second period.

Jason Silver almost scored with his first touch after coming off the bench but after bursting into the penalty area the ball got caught under his feet and rolled tamely through to the keeper.

Silver then broke into the box again, cut inside a defender but his shot took a deflection and went straight into the keeper’s hands.

A cross from the right found Hunt un-marked in the box but his first time shot was blocked by the keeper’s legs.

Hunt had another chance to score when Snelling’s miss-placed clearance fell to him but his shot was deflected over the crossbar.

In the end Whitchurch held on to main-tain their unbeaten record in the league and they moved to the top of the Premier Division table on goal difference from the Rams.

Whitchurch travel to Winchester City this afternoon in the Premier Division.

RETRO rams

EVERY programme this season will fea-ture a story from the files of the Peters-field Post – Petersfield Town FC’s official media partner.

The Rams are currently second in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division table, and back in September 1978 they beat Christchurch to stay in second spot in the Hampshire League Division 3.

Petersfield had to recover following a shaky start to this match, which saw Christchurch take the lead on ten min-utes after Keirl had already gone close with a shot. Gosby beat the offside trap and scored when he slotted the ball past the advancing Bicknell.

Petersfield almost drew level on 22 minutes when a long throw-in caused the home side problems. Thakore played the ball on but Dore headed wide of the goal.

United did get their equaliser six minutes later when Marshall split the defence with a fine pass and Dore was floored inside the penalty area.

Marshall made no mistake with his spot kick.

Petersfield were now well on top and Forrester and Wallis both had chances to fire United in front.

The winning goal came on 64 minutes when Bicknell’s long kick found Forrester, who beat a defender before crossing to Dore who headed home.

Christchurch tried to mount a fightback in the closing stages but Bicknell ensured they didn’t score again.

PETERSFIELD Town stormed back to the top of the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division table with a win in this East Hampshire derby clash.

A deluge of rain half an hour before kick-off left large puddles in the goal-mouths and centre circle and the referee ordered that the water had to be swept away before play could start.

Alresford had the first chance of the afternoon in the opening minute when Petersfield struggled to clear a cross and the ball fell to Daniel Strange but his low shot was easily saved by Matt Shortt.

Petersfield took the lead after 13 min-utes when a ball into the box was cleared to Alex Lowley on the edge of the penalty area. He faked to shoot and turned inside a defender before hitting a low shot into the corner of the net.

Almost immediately the visitors cre-ated a good attack when Jack Hoey broke clear from the half way line but his low shot when he reached the penalty area was saved by Shortt.

Warren Hunt then hit an effort from 25 yards straight at the keeper before the Rams doubled their lead on 26 min-utes. Matt Benham found space to drive forward on the left wing before delivering a cross which found Lowley and his spec-tacular volley from eight yards out flew past the keeper and into the net.

Andy Todd then got on the scoresheet for Petersfield when he headed home a cross at the far post but the referee disal-lowed the goal for a foul on the defender.

Shortt had to make a couple of saves from Alresford chances at the start of the second half and Hunt went close with a

header from a corner at the other end before the visitors staged their fightback.

They pulled their first goal back on the hour mark when they broke down the right hand side and the ball found Hoey in the penalty area.

He shot straight at Shortt but the keeper spilled the ball and Tom Riddell was on hand to tuck away the rebound.

Simon Everett then had a good chance to equalise but he shot straight at Shortt and Rams substitute Ash Howes then did the same thing at the other end.

Alresford equalised on 73 minutes when they broke clear through the middle of the pitch and a pass put Riddell clear inside the penalty area. The angle looked tight for him to score but he lifted his shot over Shortt and into the roof of the net.

Some of the home crowd were starting to fear the visitors were going to leave Love Lane with all three points at this stage but they needn’t have worried as a late flurry of goals was about to arrive.

On 82 minutes Ed Dryden was fed the ball on the right and he drove into the penalty area before pulling back the ball back across the face of goal and Howes back heeled it into the net from close range.

It was 4-2 three minutes later when Hunt headed the ball against the crossbar from a corner and after a brief scramble to win the ball when it dropped inside the six yard box, Brad Miles turned it home from a couple of yards out.

The final goal came on 90 minutes when Dryden won a tackle in midfield and then took the ball forward to the edge of the penalty area and his shot hit the keeper but it looped up into the path of Hunt who headed the ball into the net.
