For the past few years I’ve had the pleasure of servingas the NCH representative to the committee that organizes theAnnual Joint Homeopathy Conference. As many of you know, this event has replaced the annual NCH conference and serves
as the place where all who are interested in homeopathy can meet, learn, and have a great time. The conference committee includesrepresentatives from all of the major practitioner organizations(North American Society of Homeopaths, Homeopathic Academyof Naturopathic Physicians, American Institute of Homeopathy,
Homeopathic Nurses Association) and the NCH. For those of youwho think this is the “same old NCH conference”—think again! The joint annual conference has truly become a unifying force inthe world of homeopathy, and increasingly, we have attendees andpresenters coming from all over the world.
As the joint conference takes shape and develops its uniqueidentity, we are slowly beginning to tweak its structure. For2008—to be held April 11–15 at Crowne Plaza at the Crossings inWarwick (Providence), Rhode Island—we have incorporated sev-eral changes into the old 5-day format. More substantial changesare planned for future conferences.
More in-depth teachingIn 2008, the overall structure will remain the same: a one-day Fridayworkshop, followed by the two-day weekend conference, followed bya two-day workshop on Monday and Tuesday. Our Friday workshopwill be taught by André Saine, ND, and Monday/Tuesday workshopwill be taught by Jeremy Sherr, RSHom. In response to requests andsuggestions from attendees, however, the Saturday/Sunday mainconference will now feature more substantial lectures by these twoteachers. André Saine will teach a full morning session on Saturday, and Jeremy Sherr will teach the entirety of Sunday morning. Thatmeans that attendees will be able to enjoy substantial teaching fromtwo of our great instructors in one conference setting.
The theme of the 2008 conference is Homeopathy in Commu-nity. We intentionally chose this somewhat ambiguous title for itsvarious connotations: our community of homeopaths andpatients, the use of homeopathy in our communities, and families(“communities”) of remedies. All of these themes are representedby the conference lectures.
On Friday, the conference will kick off with a bang when AndréSaine presents a day-long seminar. On Saturday morning he willtreat us to a preview of his upcoming book on the use of home-opathy in epidemics of the past. But the bulk of his teaching onFriday and Saturday morning will focus on the use of lesser-
known remedies and other approaches useful in resolving diffi-cult cases. Jeremy Sherr will speak Sunday morning, Monday, andTuesday about treatment of AIDS, the syphilitic family of reme-dies, as well as the remedies Helium, Krypton, and Olive.
Two advanced tracksThe lectures on Saturday and Sunday afternoons will now be struc-tured into two parallel advanced tracks that will be of interest to allserious students of homeopathy. They include talks on treatment
of substance abuse and post-tramatic stress dis-order, the role of the placebo effect, the Desertremedies, the Cryptogam family of remedies(plants that produce spores), a systems analysisof the homeopathic community, the results of aresearch study on the homeopathic community,
and a panel on the Sensation Method.
One novice trackFor homeopathy novices, we will now feature a separate one-dayworkshop on Saturday consisting of five lectures: What is Health? What is Disease? What is to be Cured?; The Homeopathic Inter-view; Exploring Your Homeopathic Home Remedy Kit; Homeop-athy through the Transformation of Menopause; and Curing the‘Incurable’—Chronic Diseases.
In addition to Saine and Sherr, the 2008 lecturers will includeMelanie Grimes, RSHom(NA), CCH; Ellen Feingold, MD(H);Kate Birch, RSHom(NA), CCH; Lisa Decandia, DSHomMEd,HD(RHom); Manfred Mueller, RSHom(NA), CCH; Loretta Bute-horn, PhD, RSHom(NA), CCH; Edward Shalts, MD, DHt; ToddRowe, MD(H), DHt, RSHom(NA), CCH; Mark Brody, MD;Bernardo Merizalde, MD, DHt; Dr. Jawahar Shah; Iris Bell, PhD,MD, MD(H); Melissa Burch, RSHom(NA), CCH; JennyHwozdek, CHom; Tim Stryker, MD; Christopher Beaver; GaryChristiansen; and Wanda Bedinghaus MD.
Meet, learn, have fun!And let’s not forget all the other things that make the annual con-ference so much fun—the opening reception on Friday night(newly expanded), the exhibitor area, and the second annualposter session (on Friday night this year). Many practitioner andother homeopathic organizations will be holding their yearlymeetings in tandem with the conference. We will also be treated tolunches included in the conference price—more opportunities forsocializing! Saturday evening will feature a trip into the historicseaside city of Newport, Rhode Island, for a night on the town.
So make your plans now! Join the rest of the homeopathiccommunity, learn from not just one, but many great teachers, andhelp support our increasingly unified homeopathic community. We need YOU there. For more details, see page 2 and visit www.NationalCenterForHomeopathy.org.

In Praise of Solid, Well-Developed HomeopathyDear Editor:The history of homeopathy is littered with attempts to find short-cuts or instant insights into discerning a remedy. Currently, there isa trend among practitioners to substitute speculation for homeop-athy and to confuse this speculation for solid, well-developed, andcarefully reasoned homeopathic cases. I’ve witnessed it firsthand atseminars and have even seen it in the pages of Homeopathy Today.
While flashes of insight and leaps of intuition are vital andessential for a deeper understanding of patient cases, it cannot be,for the majority of cases, the sole raison d’etre for giving a remedy.Innovation and insight must be then supported by proof. Home-opathy is, at its core, a science based on an empirical methodol-ogy; it is not a metaphysical art.
The fad of speculative homeopathy has insidiously creepedinto the profession over the past decade. It comes in a variety offorms: the selection of remedies based on kinesiology or dowsing;prescribing homeopathic remedies that have never been proved;developing remedies based on dubious provings; and the use ofgestures or sensations of the patient as the sole indication for theprescription of a remedy. These methods should give all serioushomeopaths reason to be deeply alarmed.
I have been appalled at some of the things I’ve heard at home-opathic seminars. In one instance, a well-known instructordescribed how he asked “provers” to sit in a room and imaginewhat it would be like to handle a particular substance; then herecorded their responses as if it were a true proving. In anotherseminar, a homeopath asked the students to dream about a sub-stance and record their dreams; then the homeopath treated thisinformation as if it were a proving. Imagining a substance ordreaming about it versus actually handling or ingesting the sub-stance are two different experiences. And imagining a substanceor dreaming about it is not a proving in the method of accepted, classical homeopathy. The problem arises when this unsubstanti-ated information gets into repertories, and unsuspecting home-
opaths presume it is from atrue proving and rely uponit for treating sick people.
In other instances, I’velistened as venerated homeopathic instructors pointed to one ges-ture of a patient that was reminiscent of a particular animal orplant, after which the homeopath prescribed a remedy made fromthis animal or plant—all based on this gesture alone. While thatinsight toward finding the remedy might be valid and the gesturemight be worthwhile to consider, it is only part of the case. It needsto be understood in the totality of the patient and their illness. Andit needs to be validated by a logical process that is consistent withtwo hundred years of homeopathic tradition, experience, andHahnemann’s Organon. More troubling to me is that sometimesthe remedy chosen has not even been proven, yet it is given to thepatient based on such insights.
Before we move down the slippery slope of the homeopathicequivalent of cultural relativism, it is imperative that the govern-ing bodies and the homeopathic community stand up to say whatis genuine solid, well-developed, and carefully reasoned (i.e., clas-sical) homeopathy and what is not. While I have valued the cre-ative speculation of many homeopaths, it’s important toremember that we are prescribing for people, and the incorrectprescription can be deleterious to the patient. As Hahnemannsaid, our goal should be “to remove the whole disease according toclear, comprehensible principles.”
Ultimately, this trend toward speculation undermines thevalidity of homeopathy. If homeopathy is to survive and grow, Ibelieve that it needs its innovation to be rooted in solid, well-developed cases based on the traditions and experience of twohundred years of practice. Anything less than that is short-chang-ing our patients, our profession, and ourselves.
With great sadness, we report thatMarcia Neiswander, MN, ANP,RN, a dedicated NCH member
and homeopathic practitioner, passed awayon September 19, 2007. While at work as aNurse Practitioner for the Los AngelesCounty Department of Mental Health, shesuffered a massive stroke.
Marcia followed a long family traditionwhen she became a homeopath. Her father,Allen Neiswander, MD, DHt, has been inhomeopathic practice for 61 years, and hisfather was a homeopathic physician beforehim. Her mother, Georgiana, was a strongadvocate of homeopathy, active in numer-
ous homeopathic organizations. Marciaearned a masters degree in psychiatricnursing, trained in homeopathy with herfather, and graduated from the Hahne-mann College of Homeopathy in Berkeley. She served as Board Member and Treasurerof the California Homeopathic MedicalSociety (CHMS) and President of the Cali-fornia Coalition of Homeopathic Nurses.
Marcia’s co-worker Maria Acostaremarked: “On a daily basis she served, instructed, encouraged, challenged, reduced to laughter, and inspired all thosewho were lucky to know her. She careddeeply about her clients ... and personified
the values ofnursing.” TheCHMS’sPrema nandaChilds added:“The homeo-pathic worldwill miss suchan avid andcaring devotee of homeopathy.”
Marcia is survived by her husband Phil, her two sons, Erik and Aaron, and herfather and his wife Elrita. Our deepestsympathy goes to her family, friends, andclients.

AZ homeopathic board auditedAfter a year-long review, state auditors recommended theArizona Board of Homeopathic Medical Examiners reformsome of its processes, including the way it handles com-plaints and investigates physicians. State lawmakers hadrequested an audit after an investigative report publishedin the Arizona Republic claimed that the board did notsanction physicians properly and allowed those who hadlost their licenses in other states to practice in AZ. Dr.Bruce Shelton, president of the Arizona Homeopathic andIntegrative Medical Association and past president of theregulatory board, commended the auditors for pointingout problems that should be fixed. Shelton said, “Youdon’t take away the board, because of the good thingsbeing done by the profession.”—The Associated Press State & Local Wire, August 24, 2007
Skin disease researchA recent Japanese study investigated the effects of indi-vidualized homeopathic treatment for chronic skin dis-eases. It included 60 patients who had atopic dermatitis, eczema, severe acne, chronic urticaria, psoriasis vulgaris,or alopecia. They received individualized homeopathictreatments in addition to conventional dermatologicaltreatments for a period of from 3 months to about 2.5years. 88.3% of patients reported over 50% improvement.Researchers concluded: “Individualized homeopathictreatment can provoke a good response in patients withchronic skin disease; ... [it] may be a useful strategy along-side conventional treatment.” —Hospital Business Week,

Homeopathy highlighted on Oprah! The October 30 Oprah Winfrey Show, “What the Stylemak-ers Can’t Live Without,” on ABC-TV nationwide featured asegment with supermodel Cindy Crawford who shared afew of her “favorite things.” One of them was her 50-remedy homeopathic kit (from Washington HomeopathicProducts) along with her “homeopathic bible,” Homeo-pathic Medicine at Home by Maesimund Panos, MD, andJane Heimlich. Showing the camera her kit and a well-worncopy of the book, she said: “I am the doctor of our familyand I’m a big fan of homeopathy. If I have the kids, forsure, I always take this with me.” Explaining that homeo-pathic medicines were good for bee stings, mosquito bites, and bruises, Crawford added that you only need to take “five of those little pellets” and that the kids likethem because they’re sweet. Homeopathy in Italy“Results from a healthcare study involving 60,000 familiesin Italy, found that homeopathy is the most popular alter-native therapy in the country, with around 7% of Italianshaving been treated homeopathically. ... The second mostpopular alternative therapy is osteopathy and chiropractictreatments with 6.4%, followed by phytotherapy at 3.7%and acupuncture with 1.8%.” Worldwide sales of homeo-pathic medicines account for 0.3% of the world drug market, and almost 70% of all homeopathic remedies aresold in Western Europe. —Global Insight, August 30, 2007
University of Connecticut hosts internationalhomeopathy debate—view it online! On October 25, the University of Connecticut Health Center presented a unique public debate, the first ofits kind: “Homeopathy: Quackery or a Key to theFuture of Medicine?” This 2-hour program was broad-cast live over the Internet and featured six internation-ally renowned experts, each speaking for about 20minutes: pro-homeopathy were Iris Bell, MD, PhD (Uni-versity of Arizona, Integrative Medicine), Rustum Roy,PhD (Pennsylvania State, Materials Science Depart-ment), and André Saine, ND (Canadian Academy ofHomeopathy); against homeopathy were Donald Mar-cus, MD (Baylor College of Medicine), Steven Novella,MD (Yale School of Medicine), and Naduv Davidovitch,MD, PhD, MPH (public health officer, ministry ofhealth, Israel).
The program was professionally moderated andrecorded. Dr. Bell presented an overview of the bodyof research in support of homeopathy and suggestedthat additional types of evaluation are needed forassessing homeopathy’s effectiveness; Dr. Roy spoke ofhis work with materials science showing a distinctstructural difference between a homeopathic remedyand water; and Dr. Saine revealed the results of his his-torical research which found homeopathy to havebeen extremely effective in the treatment of epidemicsin the past. The other presenters characterized home-opathy as implausible and lacking in enough double-blind, placebo-controlled studies to warrant furtherresearch. An online opinion poll conducted pre- andpost-debate, however, showed that a significant per-centage of viewers were swayed by the pro-homeopa-thy presenters. HT will report in more detail on thedebate in an upcoming issue. In the meantime, pleaseview a video recording of the debate at: www.sonic-foundry.com/uconn. Literary Greats Who Chose Homeopathy: Write On! Fascinating stories of famous people & cultural heroesby DANA ULLMAN, MPH
Although conventional medical soci-eties were successful in forcing the closingof the homeopathic medical schools in thetwentieth century, homeopathy has alwaysattracted the most educated people insociety, and many of the world’s literaryelite have been some of homeopathy’sstrongest proponents.
The esteemed medical historianWilliam Rothstein acknowledged that“early American homeopaths were all welleducated and cultured physicians … andmanifested an erudition rarely found inregular medical journals of the period”(Rothstein, 1972). He continued, quotingthe editor of a leading conventional medical journal who begrudgingly admitted that many homeopaths were“persons of the highest respectability andmoral worth.”
American Literary GreatsIt is not surprising to learn that many ofAmerica’s leading literary figures in thenineteenth century were also advocates ofthis “new medicine,” including HenryDavid Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson,Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, NathanielHawthorne,1 Harriet Beecher Stowe,Louisa May Alcott, Henry James, andWilliam James. Likewise, severalrenowned European literary greats werealso homeopathic supporters, includingJohann Wolfgang von Goethe, Fyodor
Dostoevsky, Charles Dickens, and George Bernard Shaw.
EMILY DICKINSON(1830–1886) is consid-
ered, with Walt Whitman,as one of the two great
American poets of the nineteenth century.Between 1846 and 1852, Emily Dickinsonexperienced serious problems with her
health, specifically a chronic cough, fatigue, and significant weight loss.Extracting clinical clues from her corre-spondence, some historians have sug-gested that she was suffering fromtuberculosis (Hirschhorn, 1999).
Tuberculosis was and is a very seriousdisease, and epidemics of it have eruptedat various times in human history. In 1851it was the cause of one-third of all deathsin Boston, and Emily had many relativeswho had died from it. That year, Emilysought treatment with a highly respectedhomeopath, Dr. William Wesselhoeft2 inBoston (Hirschhorn, 1999). Emily wrotethat he prescribed two homeopathic med-icines for her. She didn’t think that themedicines were effective, but her olderand more practical sister, Lavina, thoughtotherwise. Lavina (who originally referredEmily and their brother Austin to Dr. Wes-selhoeft because he was her homeopath)asserted just two weeks after homeopathictreatment: “I think Emily may be verymuch improved. She has really grown fat.”Because Emily was always extremely thin, this statement of her gaining weight sug-gests some health improvements. Herbrother Austin wrote Emily’s closestfriend, Susan Gilbert: “He [their father]says Emily is better than for years since shereturned from Boston” (Thomas, 1988).And lending further support to the realbenefits from the homeopathic treatment, within several months, she no longercomplained about the chronic cough thatshe had experienced for five years.
Other biographers of Emily Dickinsonsaid that Wesselhoeft’s treatment “broughtnot only a noticeable improvement in herhealth but a certain buoyancy of spirit aswell” (Bingham, 1955).
Despite the serious health problemsthat Emily Dickinson experienced in the
1840s and early 1850s, she lived consider-ably beyond these decades. She
died in 1886.
WASHINGTON IRVING (1783–1859) was best
known for writing The Leg-end of Sleepy Hollow and Rip
van Winkle as well as several major biogra-phies, including a four-volume set onAmerica’s first President, George Wash-ington. Irving is said to have mentoredauthors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne,Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and EdgarAllan Poe, and because Hawthorne andLongfellow were known advocates forhomeopathic medicine, it is not surprisingto learn that Washington Irving was too.
On February 21, 1854, Irving wrote toa friend: “I have found, in my own case, great relief from Homeopathy, to which Ihad recourse almost accidentally; for I amrather slow at adopting new theories”(Hendrick, 1987). He went on to say thatafter homeopathic treatment he was moreable to continue his literary efforts. Laterthat same year, he wrote: “You ask mewhether the homeopathics still keep mequite well. I really begin to have a greatfaith in them. The complaint of the headespecially, which troubled me last year, and obliged me to throw by my pen, hasbeen completely vanquished by them.”
It is not surprising that Irving choseDr. John C. Peters of New York as hishomeopath since he was both a respectedclinician and the editor of a leading home-opathic journal of that time, The NorthAmerican Journal of Homeopathy. Irvingbegan consulting with Dr. Peters in 1852due to recurrent symptoms of dizziness(Wershub, 1965). Dr. Peters prescribedCocculus indicus, made from an herbcalled Indian cockle (Peters, 1860).3 Irving

continually called on care from Dr. Petersfor himself and members of his family. Dr.Peters became a regular visitor at Irving’sSunnyside estate, and they developed astrong friendship.
Irving’s personal homeopathic medi-cine kit is on display at his Sunnysidehome in Tarrytown, New York, which wasbought by fellow homeopathic apprecia-tor, J.D. Rockefeller in 1945 and opened tothe public in 1947. Today, Irving’s home isa national historical landmark.
European Literary GreatsThe primary principle of homeopathy, called the law or principle of similars(“treating like with like”), is actually anancient understanding that great thinkersand healers have acknowledged and uti-lized since early written history. Chapter13, Clergy and Spiritual Leaders, high-lights the use of the homeopathic princi-ple by Moses. Even the Greeks’ Oracle atDelphi was known to have said, “Thatwhich makes sick shall heal,” and one ofthe famous stories from Greek mythologyis the tale of Telephus, a Trojan hero whowas speared and then healed when piecesof the spear were scraped off and placedon the wound. Hippocrates, the father ofmedicine and an early medical historian, once asserted, “Through the like, disease isproduced, and through the application ofthe like it is cured.”
Even Shakespeare wrote about treating“like with like” in his famed play Romeoand Juliet (Act I, scene ii), when Benvoliogives comfort and advice to lovesickRomeo, saying:
Tut, man, one fire burns out another’s burning; One pain is lessened by another’sanguish,Turn giddy and be holp by backward turning; One desperate grief cures withanother’s languish.Take thou some new infection to the eye,And the rank poison of the old will die.
JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE
(1749–1832) is consideredone of the greatest Western
literary figures of all time. A German poet, novelist, playwright, courtier, and naturalphilosopher, Goethe was a contemporaryof homeopathy’s founder, Samuel Hahne-mann, MD (1755–1843), and they bothwere Freemasons. When Goethe was givenan amulet containing a very small goldornament (September 2, 1820), he wrote:“The jewelers of Frankfort must haveheard of the Leipsig Dr. Hahnemann’s the-ory—now, certainly a world-famousphysician— … and taken the best of itfrom their own purposes … now I believemore than ever in this wonderful doctor’stheory as I have experienced … and con-tinue to experience so clearly the efficacyof a very small administration.” And inanother letter he strongly proclaimedhimself a “Hahnemannian disciple”(Haehl, 1922).
Goethe not only espoused the virtuesof homeopathy in his letters to friends andcolleagues, but even in his most famousplay, Faust, in which his lead character,Mephistopheles, asserts the homeopathiccredo, making specific reference to thehomeopathic principle of similars: “Tolike things like, whatever one may ail;there’s certain help.”
Goethe was also a close friend with KarlWesselhoeft, the owner of a large Germanpublishing company of literary works, andGoethe was a frequent visitor in the Wes-selhoeft home. Wesselhoeft’s son, William, became Goethe’s protégé. As a result ofGoethe’s influence and due to later corre-spondence with German doctors who hadbecome homeopaths, the younger Wessel-hoeft became a serious student and then
practitioner and teacher of home-opathy in America.
FYODOR DOSTOEVSKY(1821–1888), one of the
other truly great Westernliterary figures, suffered from
epilepsy which seemed to begin around1850 while he was imprisoned for hispolitical beliefs. After this time, his father,
a conventional physician, treated Dosto-evsky for a severe throat affliction, but hisconventional treatment didn’t providebenefit and even led to a permanentimpairment of his voice (Rice, 1983). Dr.Dostoevsky then resorted to prescribinghomeopathic medicines for his son, though there isn’t evidence that his fatherwas trained in homeopathy and the resultswere unclear. Later in life, Dostoevskyincluded in his classic novel, The BrothersKaramazov (1880), a dialogue in whichone of the brothers tells the other: “Home-opathic doses perhaps are the strongest”
(Chapter 9).
GEORGE BERNARDSHAW (1856–1950) was one of
England’s most respectedplaywrights. Shaw is the only
person ever to have won both a NobelPrize (Literature in 1925) and an AcademyAward (Best Screenplay for Pygmalion in1938). In his play The Doctor’s Dilemma(1906), Shaw showed the dilemma thatdoctors inevitably face between their needto care for their patients and their need topractice, often using dangerous drugs andperforming unnecessary operations inorder to earn a livelihood.
In the play’s preface, Shaw wrote: The test to which all methods oftreatment are finally brought iswhether they are lucrative to doc-tors or not. It would be difficult tocite any proposition less obnox-ious to science than that advancedby Hahnemann, to wit, that drugswhich in large doses produced cer-tain symptoms, counteract themin very small doses, just as in mod-ern practice it is found that a suffi-ciently small inoculation withtyphoid rallies our powers to resistthe disease instead of prostratingus with it. But Hahnemann and hisfollowers were frantically perse-cuted for a century by generationsof apothecary-doctors whoseincomes depended on the quantityof drugs they could induce theirpatients to swallow.

In 1932 Shaw wrote an essay, Doctors’Delusions, Crude Criminology and ShamEducation, which included a story aboutthe homeopathic treatment he receivedfor a hydrocele. This accumulation of fluidaround the testicle normally requires sur-gery, but Shaw experienced a rapid curewithout recurrence. He was known toextol homeopathy’s ability to cure many“incurable” diseases.
Modern Literary GreatsThe list of modern homeopathic advocatesamong writers does not compare with thatof the past. However, Norman Cousins,Barbara Cartland, Gabriel Garcia Márquez,
and J. D. Salinger are not light-weights by any measurement.
NORMAN COUSINS(1912–1990) was an inter-
nationally respected jour-nalist. He was editor of The
Saturday Review (originally called TheSaturday Review of Literature, a leading lit-erary magazine for many decades,1924–1986) and advisor to several Ameri-can presidents. Despite impressive lifelongwork on international peace and disarma-ment, he achieved his greatest fame fromwriting an article in the New England Journal of Medicine (1976) and then abook, Anatomy of an Illness as Perceived bythe Patient (1979) that chronicled his personal experience in contracting adeadly illness and curing it. In the mid-1960s, he was diagnosed with ankylosingspondylitis, a normally incurable degener-ative disease of the connective tissue of thebody. What was truly remarkable abouthis case was that he claimed to cure him-self by taking large doses of Vitamin C andby experiencing frequent fits of laughter(he watched numerous TV comedy pro-grams, including Candid Camera and ILove Lucy).
After writing this article and book sug-gesting that there was a significant healingeffect from simple Vitamin C and fromthe power of the mind (and of humor!) toheal, he received more than 3,000 lettersfrom medical doctors who expressed sin-cere interest and support for his experi-ence. Cousins then wrote another
important article about what he learnedfrom these doctors (Cousins, 1978).
In 1980 he suffered a severe heartattack. He was treated conventionallyexcept for one thing: His wife, who was aserious student of homeopathic medicine, gave him several homeopathic doses ofCactus grandiflorus, a homeopathic medi-cine known to cause and cure “prickly”and constricting pains around the heart.Despite having had a massive heart attack(and without taking Vitamin C or watch-ing any comedy programs), he was sittingup in bed reading and writing in a coupleof hours. He and his doctors insisted thatit was Cousins’s will to live that resulted inhis healing, though his wife simply dis-agreed. She even told me personally thatshe prescribed homeopathic medicines toher husband throughout his earlier dis-ease of ankylosing spondylitis, butbecause he was so skeptical of homeopa-thy, she secretly placed his remedies in hismorning orange juice. One of theirdaughters has confirmed these actions.
Many conventional physicians remainskeptical about the curative power of Vita-min C and laughter in treating ankylosingspondylitis, and perhaps their skepticism isjustifiable. The fact that Cousins’s wife pre-scribed homeopathic medicines for himduring both illnesses might better explain
his remarkable recoveries.
DAME BARBARACARTLAND
(1901–2000) was the mostsuccessful writer of romance
novels of all time, specializing in historicallove themes. She authored more than 700romance novels, which were translatedinto thirty-six languages and sold over abillion copies worldwide, making her oneof the best-selling authors in history.Besides romance novels, Ms. Cartland alsohad a special interest in natural medicine. In the 1960s she founded and was presi-dent of the National Association of Health. She advocated for organic foods, homeop-athy, and acupuncture. She co-owned ahealth food store in Marylebone, England, and was a patron to a magazine calledMind and Matter, which promoted variousnatural medicines as well as radionics. She
had a special love and appreciation forhomeopathic Arnica. She also supportedefforts for better conditions and wages formidwives and nurses, and advocated forequal rights for gypsies, who commonlyexperienced great discrimination.
JEROME DAVID SALINGER(1919–), known as J. D. Salinger, gainedhis reputation as a result of his novel TheCatcher in the Rye (1951). Salinger wrote acouple of other books after this and sev-eral short stories, but ultimately, he hasbecome one of the most private and reclu-sive modern-day authors. Very little wasknown about him, until Joyce Maynard, aNew York Times columnist who developeda relationship with him and then livedwith him for several years, wrote a bookabout her time with “Jerry” Salinger(Maynard, 1998). Maynard wrote (andSalinger’s daughter Margaret confirmed,in her own book, published in 2000) thatSalinger has a special deep love for home-opathy. He spends several hours each daystudying homeopathic books, and he reg-ularly prescribes homeopathic medicinesto people and animals.
At one point, Maynard describes a visitby her mother, who had an infected toe atthe time. After interviewing Maynard’smother, Jerry prescribed a homeopathicmedicine, and within minutes, her toeswelled considerably and then the swellingburst, after which the pain disappearedinstantly (Maynard, 1998). Maynarddescribes Salinger’s interest in high-potencyhomeopathic medicines and his apprecia-tion for constitutional homeopathy (one ofthe important and sophisticated practices ofclassical homeopathy, in which a singleremedy is prescribed based on the totality ofa person’s physical, emotional, mental, andgenetic characteristics in order tostrengthen a person’s entire constitution).Maynard also notes Salinger’s method ofgiving a person a homeopathic medicine inwater, which is an advanced method of dis-pensing remedies to people (or animals).
Ultimately, Maynard moved out ofSalinger’s home, got married, had chil-dren, and then got divorced, but through-out this time, she too has soughttreatment from professional homeopaths.

won the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature. He is considered one of the greatest SouthAmerican writers of the twentieth andtwenty-first centuries. Perhaps the mostwell-known of his many novels is OneHundred Years of Solitude. Many of hiswritings are drawn from his own life.Because his father was trained as a medicaldoctor and a pharmacist who practicedhomeopathy, this medical subject hasbeen a part of several of his novels andshort stories.
In Love in a Time of Cholera, the god -father of the novel’s protagonist is ahomeopathic doctor, and ironically, theprotagonist is fighting for the affections of
a woman who is married to a conventionalphysician.
In his most recent novel, Living to Tellthe Tale (2003), Garcia Márquez chose toincorporate elements of his own life withsome fictional twists. His heroine, amuch-loved mother, is a “lioness” whofights a long battle with her family tomarry a violin-playing telegraph clerk. Then, struggling in poverty when her hus-band abandons her and her eleven chil-dren, she seeks to make a better life for herfamily by making a living as a homeo-pathic pharmacist.

2 William Wesselhoeft, MD, was an eminent physi-cian and homeopath. It wasn’t unusual for hispatients to experience relief from their physicalcomplaints along with improvement in their emo-
tional and mental state. In fact, in his last addressbefore the Homeopathic Society of Boston, hedescribed the goal of a physician to do more thanimprove physical health: “The art of awakeningand increasing the vitality of the human body, that is our highest aim” (Bingham, 1955, 175).Wesselhoeft was not the only member of his fam-ily involved in homeopathy. His brother RobertWesselhoeft was also a leading homeopath, andRobert had two sons, Conrad and Walter, whowere professors at the homeopathic medicalschool at Boston University. Conrad Wesselhoeft,MD, was Louisa May Alcott’s homeopath.
3 One randomized, double-blind study published ina major AMA medical journal showed that a home-opathic formula product (called Vertigoheel or Coc-culus compositum) was as effective as a leadingconventional drug in the treatment of vertigo(dizziness) (Weiser, 1998). Vertigoheel is a prescrip-tion drug in the United States marketed for thetreatment of vertigo, while Cocculus compositum isconsidered an over-the-counter drug that does notrequire a doctor’s prescription because it is mar-keted for motion sickness, which is, according tothe FDA, a less serious medical condition. Theseproducts have identical ingredients.

Just as often, however, things backfire.Subsequent children born into familieswreak havoc with older siblings, and par-ents find themselves playing referee andarbitrator all day long. As children getolder, sometimes patterns in relating shift;but often they do not. Instead they mayescalate, and time at home with siblingsespecially on weekends or summer vaca-tions can be unbearable for all. Thescreaming, hate-filled arguments, hitting, and other aggressive actions complicateand stress family dynamics.
Reason for hopeMost parents are at a loss for how to han-dle such situations—preventively, in themoment of flaring emotions, and afterthings calm down. Unfortunately, well-meaning parents often make mattersworse. Sibling rivalry can be difficult forparents and children alike, especially forthose who don’t handle discord well. In
many families, we see separate televisionsand/or computers to keep kids apart. Orwe find each person over-scheduled sothat time at home together is minimized. But solutions like that deny a family theopportunity to work together, to learnbasic communication skills, and to gainthe ability to work out differences, not tomention having family relationships thatare loving and enjoyable. In my experienceboth as a physician and as a mother whoraised three children, I can say withouthesitation: there is help, there are solutionsto such major family problems, and thereis plenty of reason for hope.
With correct homeopathic constitu-tional prescribing along with consciousparenting techniques, especially whenbegun early and kept up, diabolical siblingrivalry can be transformed. Perhaps notinto a peaceful, loving, picture-postcardfamily, but one where communication andrespect are primary and where timetogether, at least more often than not, canbe tolerated or even enjoyed.
Charming DaisyWhen I first met Daisy I was blown awayby her charm. At age four, she could talk toanyone. She flashed a gorgeous whitesmile at my receptionist, offered to helpboth older and younger kids in the waitingroom play area, and gave me a big hugupon being introduced. She was chubby, almost Rubenesque—if you can use thatword to describe a preschooler! Her longblond hair, pulled back into a high pony-tail, swung behind her like another limb. Her rosy cheeks came to a central point inher red and full lips. She was flirty, confi-dent, and amazingly robust.
The chief complaints Daisy’s mom hadwritten on her daughter’s intake form were:asthma, jealousy, behavior issues, and vio-lence. It was difficult for me to reconcile thebright little girl before me with the notionof behavior problems. She seemed so cute, outgoing, helpful, effusive, and capable. Ihad watched her herd together her family’s
belongings, and like an ant, she seemed tocarry more than her own weight as theymade their way back to my exam room.Meanwhile, Daisy’s seven-year-old sisterLisa, who was skinny and pale with smallfeatures, sat quietly and almost passively ather mother’s side, not taking up muchspace nor manifesting much energy.
According to Daisy’s mom, problemsbetween Daisy and Lisa started in Daisy’sinfancy; it seemed that almost as soon asDaisy became aware of her surroundings, she did not want her sister around. WhenDaisy was nursing, if Lisa, then three, came over to ask her mother a question,Daisy would bat at Lisa and shoo her away.As Daisy got older and more physicallyable, she would hit or kick her sister. Shewanted her mother’s attention to be com-plete and uninterrupted. If her momwould even talk to Lisa across the play-room while Daisy was at the breast, Daisywould clamp down on the nipple and startpummeling her mother. At first, mostpeople thought this was somehow endear-

ing, but Daisy’s mother began to worryalmost right away. Comparing notes withother parents, she learned that Daisy’sbehavior was unusual; they told her thattheir older children were more likely to bejealous of the younger one, not vice versa.
In general, I would agree with thisobservation. When a child is born into afamily, they more or less accept their posi-tion. That said, someone with a verystrong personality can seemingly comeinto this life with their own agenda.Daisy’s was clear: pay attention to me andme only. Funny thing was, she loved hersister and always wanted to play with her;as long as Lisa went along with Daisy’splans, everything went fine.
Tantrums and time-outsIn addition to the jealousy issue, Daisy hitthe terrible twos with force and passion, and she had not outgrown them even withcommitted parents who set limits andstuck to them. Her parents instituted“time-outs” right before she turned two—but it didn’t seem to work. Daisy was stillin time-out frequently each day. Shewould carry on, complaining and yellingabout being put in her room; and after thefive minute time-out, she’d go right backat it, arguing about why she’d been putthere in the first place. Most of her trans-gressions were related to hitting, kicking, biting, scratching, or otherwise abusingher older sister. There was a “zero toler-ance” rule in the house for such behavior, yet the frequency of theses events was onthe rise. Daisy’s mom could count on fourto six major temper tantrums a day wherethis little dynamo would throw herself onthe floor, kicking and screaming when shedid not get her way. Otherwise, Daisy wasincredibly fun-loving and easygoing, andonce over her outbursts, engaging, helpful, sociable, and ready for action. It was diffi-cult for anyone to stay mad at Daisybecause of her remarkable charm.
Unfortunately, this was the worst possi-ble kind of sister Lisa could have hopedfor. Even though Lisa was several yearsolder, she would usually acquiesce towhatever Daisy wanted. In this way, Lisawould avoid conflict, keep the peace, andin her mind, perhaps, continue to receiveher parents’ praises. Of course this wasterrifically unfair, and Lisa was almostreceding into having no self, no desires, no
backbone, and no grit. [Some years later, Ialso treated Lisa, who responded well to ahomeopathic remedy and began to blos-som and assert herself. I wish I had hadthe opportunity to treat her sooner!]
The report from Daisy’s preschool wasmostly fine. She was a bit pushy and dom-ineering to the other kids but otherwisehelpful and appropriate. A few times shehad elbowed or shoved her way to some-thing or someone she wanted, but whenreprimanded she seemed to understandthat such behavior was not acceptable. Her mother was relieved that at leastDaisy’s most aberrant behavior had notfound its way into the classroom.
Asthma and eczemaDaisy had some asthmatic breathing diffi-culties especially when the weather waswarm and damp. She often had a lot ofyellow, green mucus from the nose, hadhad conjunctivitis several times, also with
lots of yellow discharge, and seemed tohave postnasal drip that she was unable tocough up. These symptoms were better inthe colder months, and in fact, Daisyseemed to prefer wintertime in general. She never wore a hat, and her parents hada hard time getting her to even wear socksin this cold New England climate. Shetook some medications daily for theasthma and used an inhaler as needed.
Daisy had mild eczema that was alsoworse in the summer, behind both kneesand a bit in the bend of the elbow. Hermom used Calendula ointment when theeczema was especially bothersome in thewarm months.
Gusto and appetiteDaisy loved food and would eat and drinkalmost anything. She was fond of sweetsand juicy things, fruits and popsicles. Sheate with gusto and great appetite. Hermother wondered if she should be curtail-
Required Readingfor ParentsThe best practical book that offersimmediate results to improve familycommunication is How to Talk SoKids Will Listen and Listen So KidsWill Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine
Mazlish. It is required reading for all parents. Give it to families having babies. The work in this book is monumental while simple and effective. Topics
include: How to Help Children Deal with their Feelings, Engaging Coop -eration, Alternatives to Punishment, Encouraging Autonomy, and FreeingChildren from Playing Roles.
Any family with more than one child also needs Siblings Without Rivalry:How to Help Your Children Live Together So You Can Live Too, by the sameauthors. The skills laid out in the first book are essential to this second one, however, so don’t skip!
I have used the teachable, logical, and compassionate methods offered inthese books with countless families in my practice as well as in my own home.I cannot think of a more important set of books to give families. Being ableto communicate successfully is essential, and anyone can do it. The writing inthese books is accessible and relevant, and the comic illustrations bring it allto life.
So the next time your friend or relative is having a baby, forget about giving another receiving blanket or chubby board picture book. Do them thefavor of a lifetime and give these books instead. Combined with supportivehomeopathic prescribing, I can’t think of a better way to help make theworld a better place for all kids and adults.

ing Daisy’s food intake, and she worriedabout Daisy’s weight. She wished Lisawould eat half as much.
Daisy slept uncovered always, in theknee-to-chest position. Her mother askedme if it was normal for a little girl to mas-turbate. I asked what she meant. She saidthat Daisy would put near anythingbetween her legs and rock back and forth.I told her it was not abnormal, but that ifit happened frequently and distracted herfrom doing other things, or if she did it inpreschool or in public, she should bestopped and told that was something bestdone alone in her room at home.
A remedy for DaisyThe remedies that I considered for Daisywere: Belladonna and Lachesis for herintensity, jealousy, violent outbursts, inter-nal heat, and asthma; Sulphur for herrobustness, extroversion, eczema, andasthma; and Medorrhinum for her amaz-ing ability to connect with people of allages, her passionate intensity, her easy slipinto and out of aggression, her tendency tomasturbate, and her excessive green, yellowmucous discharges. Ultimately, I choseMedorrhinum since its indications seemedto best characterize Daisy’s symptoms.
When we were finished with the inter-view, I gave Daisy one dose of Medor-rhinum 200c and asked them to return intwo months. I also wrote a list of what Iwanted to see change:
1. more cooperation2. less violent actions toward sister3. calmer household4. fewer asthmatic symptoms5. less masturbationThis was for my purposes but also for
her parents, to be sure we were all on thesame wavelength in terms of what the rem-edy was to address. I like writing such a listbecause then, at our follow-up visit, it givesus a starting point for assessing the efficacyof the remedy. When many of the patient’sissues are in the psychological/ behavioralrealm and I am also suggesting some psychological techniques (more about thislater), I like to include some physical ele-ments on the list—things that are much lesslikely to be impacted by such techniques.
In my experience, the right homeo-pathic remedy given to key family mem-bers can help immeasurably in situationswhere sibling rivalry and behavior prob-
lems are prominent. Of course, it would bebest to treat all the kids involved as well asthe parents, but this is not always possible.
Building communication skillsThe work of the homeopathic remedy willbe strongly supported by conscious effortalong with specific parenting and commu-nication skills. I always ask first, to be sureadvice is welcome before making any par-enting recommendations; for many, this isdelicate ground. Daisy’s parents were openand welcoming to any help available, sowe spent the better part of the remaininghalf hour going over some skills that Iwanted both mother and father to imple-ment as follows.
1. Anytime there was an act of aggres-sion toward Lisa, one of her parents was toget in between the girls, put his or herbackside to Daisy, and gush concern andcare toward Lisa. After that, they wouldput Daisy in time-out. In this way, theyfirst paid attention (and loving attentionat that) to the offended not the offender.
2. When Daisy came out of time-out,they were no longer going to tell her whyshe was there or engage in any discussionor argument about it. She knew why shehad been put in time-out. To bring thesubject up again was not needed and, infact, gave more air time to the child’s poorbehavior.
3. They were to run, not walk, to thenearest bookstore and buy the two booksby Faber and Mazlish: How to Talk So KidsWill Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk, and Siblings Without Rivalry. I have usedthe teachable, logical, and compassionatemethods offered in those pages withcountless families in my practice as well asin my own home. Helping youngsters faceand navigate conflict with skill and confi-dence is a lifelong gift. [See sidebar onpage 16 for more information.]
The remedy or the skills? The skills recommended in these bookswill go a long way toward helping familieswhere there is a lot of conflict, but they willnot do it all. In situations where the consti-tutional type or temperament of one ormore of the children are not well suited foreach other, well-prescribed homeopathicremedies will provide the missing key.
I have sometimes been asked whetherthe changes in parenting strategies couldbe the main reason behavior issues andsibling rivalry improve in my patients. Ianswer that while the impact of parentingtechniques should not be underestimated, such results show up over time. I have notseen major personality shifts in a monthor two just by teaching and modelingcommunication skills; but I have seenmajor shifts when a correct homeopathicconstitutional remedy was given. Theresistant child becomes less resistant, thejealous child less jealous, the aggressivechild less aggressive, the passive childmore assertive. For many children, theright homeopathic remedy allows the con-scious and focused work of parenting tomake a difference. And when usedtogether, constitutional homeopathy andparenting skills work synergistically.
Like a new personSuch was certainly the case with Daisy. Atour first follow-up appointment, Daisywas her usual exuberant self, but hermother, a reserved and quiet woman, grabbed me in a bear hug in the waitingroom. I guess we’d had some success! As itturned out, Daisy was like a new person. All of her good and wonderful attributeshad remained, while the abuse of her sis-ter, the intense temper tantrums, and theviolent outbursts were nearly gone.Daisy’s tantrums were down to once or
It was difficult for me to reconcile the bright
little girl before me with the notion of
behavior problems.

twice a week and often seemed like paleimitations of her previous displays.
Her asthma symptoms had been verygood. She had gone several weeks withoutuse of the inhaler—an improvement—though she still had a lot of mucus. Sinceit was winter then, however, and shetended to improve in winter, the real testof this symptom would come with thewarmer weather. Daisy’s mother hadnoticed less masturbating; in fact, shecould not recall seeing any in the past twomonths. In addition, Daisy’s eczemaseemed to be clearing up.
I loved hearing that both Daisy’s psy-chological and physical issues were mov-ing in the right direction. I was confidentthat the remedy given was correct and thatDaisy and her family were still enjoyingthe benefits of a good homeopathic rem-edy prescription. So I decided not to giveanother dose yet but to wait and see howlong the benefits of the first dose wouldlast. I asked them to return to see me inthree months, but to phone me earliershould the need arise.
Have a planHer parents also thanked me for the booksuggestions and said they were now buy-ing copies for friends. Though the tech-niques did not work every time in everysituation especially if Daisy or they werevery tired or stressed, at least they now feltlike they had strategies to use—that is,they had a plan. They were happy to feelless overwhelmed and more directed inhow they were raising their girls. Thispoint should be underscored. If parentscan feel empowered to be making changesand know they are moving in the rightdirection, this can help immeasurably. There is nothing worse than not knowinghow to proceed. If parents have a plan ofaction, even if it does not go perfectly eachday, at least there is a plan. And if bothparents sign on to such a plan, supportingand reinforcing each other, better yet.
Daisy does wellDaisy maintained her behavioral andphysical improvements over the followingyear, helped by a few repetitions of Medor-rhinum at various intervals when itseemed that she needed it. For example, she would get another dose when mildasthma symptoms cropped up in sum-
mertime attendant with a slipping backinto some of her old behaviors, and shewould quickly be back on track.
It’s now been four years since Daisy’sfirst appointment, and her asthma andeczema are problems of the past. Her momwill bring her in now for the occasionalacute problem, but Daisy has been mostlywell and doing fine in her primary grades. The sibling rivalry has ratcheted way downto the point that the girls get along betterand seem to have developed more of afriendly relationship. Their mother talksabout overhearing them working out theirdifferences, and she says they do a betterjob listening to and hearing each other. It’snot always harmonious, but it is no longerlike non-stop World War III.
Daisy has evolved from a self-centeredoverbearing toddler into an articulate andconfident grade schooler, still with astrong will but one that she no longer usesto overpower others. I have not given heranother remedy beyond the Medorrhinumbut imagine at some point she will needPhosphorus or Sulphur.
The family planSince I first saw Daisy, I have had theopportunity to treat her whole family. Both sister Lisa and mom have done wellwith the remedy Carcinosin. [Withoutgoing into great detail about their cases orthe indications for the use of Carcinosin, you can think about this remedy as some-where between Pulsatilla, Phosphorus, andStaphysagria; in other words, a sweet, slightly needy person, who seeks care andprotection and cannot tolerate conflict.]The dad has done well with Ignatia. Likeany satisfied customers, Daisy’s parentshave sent me many patients, those withemotional issues as well as physical prob-lems. Not all of them have seen the dra-matic results that Daisy has, but thenagain, most of them did not present withsuch dramatic symptoms either!
World peace begins at homeSo, recommend constitutional homeopathyto friends and family who are experiencinga lot of conflict in their lives—along withthe Faber and Mazlish books or others onthe subject, parenting classes, and commu-nication-building classes. I do not believethat such dynamics and skills learned infamilies and between siblings stay only inthe home. Learning how to be cooperativewith others and to listen and speak withopenness and respect are essential skills tobeing a successful person in most any pathone might choose, and a family with chil-dren is the perfect place to begin.
In the Siblings Without Rivalry book, afavorite goal of mine is “finding solutionsthat everyone can live with.” One timemany years ago when my own childrenwere in elementary school, we passed ananti-war rally in our town. My son turnedto me and said, “Ma, I don’t think themothers of the people involved in that warwere ever taught how to find solutionsthat everybody could live with.”
In that moment, I knew all our years ofworking toward family harmony were wellworth it.

Christmas Cures by MARY ASPINWALL, Registered Homeopath
An-ti-ci-patory an-xiety?With so many hopes pinned on The Holi-days as a time when we might all cometogether and finally start to resemble thosesmiling, happy families we see on the backof cereal boxes, we are entitled to feel a lit-tle pre-event anxiety!
So let us turn to the Ancient Romans, who never experienced Christmas or
Hanukkah as we know them, but nonethe-less have a few pertinent words of wisdom:
“If you are distressed by anythingexternal, the pain is not due to the thingitself but to your own estimate of it; and thisyou have the power to revoke at anymoment.” —Marcus Aurelius Antoninus
(121 AD–180 AD).
A lot of holiday anxiety is performancerelated. Are you going to measure up toyour own and others’, often impossible, standards?
If your standards are high, it follows thatyou will suffer more. That is why, long ago,I made one of the few logical, health- conscious decisions of my life and
decided, in terms of housekeeping
and constant catering at least, tobecome something of a slut.
If you have yet to adopt this life-enhancing strategy, one of the next twomedicines may be of great benefit to youover the holidays. One remedy that isoften helpful for high standards-type peo-ple is Silica. Those who need this remedyhate meeting new people or, in fact, doinganything new because they lack self-con -fidence and are very shy. So if this descrip-tion fits you, try one dose of Silica 6c or 30c in the run-up to a new experience. If you are less shy but, like those needingSilica, you like everything “just so” and youfind yourself demanding and anxious witha tendency to nausea and diarrhea, youmay benefit from one dose of Arsenicum 6cor 30c before a get-together.
Anxiety often has powerful effects on thedigestive system, making it difficult to enjoyall the culinary treats on offer. If you findthat you feel rushed and prone to diarrhea(particularly after eating sweet things), andyou feel much worse as the time for a par-
ticular event approaches, one dose of Argen-tum nitricum 6c or 30c may help.
Lycopodium is a good homeopathicmedicine for those who hate public speak-ing (e.g., proposing a toast or thankingguests for coming) but are usually fine once
they get going. People needing it tend to getbloated and gassy if they feel anxious.
If you suffer from a kind of stage frightwhere you are almost unable to speak orfunction, with a tendency to loose bowelsor sore throats ahead of a social engage-ment, try a dose of Gelsemium 6c or 30c.
One thing I would strongly recom-mend is to get a large bottle of either BachFlower Rescue Remedy® or AustralianBush Flower Emergency Essence and keepit in the house or in your purse. Take a fewdrops if you feel yourself start to wobble atany stage. It works for almost everyone.
Hang-o-vers?Tsk, tsk! Didn’t you say “Never again”? Assoon as you have the wit to realize youhave overdone it: stop drinking alcohol(doh!) and switch to water. Drink as muchof it as you can reasonably stand. Try notto think what fish do in it. Put a very largeglass of water by your bedside. Drinksome every time you wake. Apologize pro-fusely to your long-suffering body.
Remember theGolden RulesIn homeopathy there are threegolden rules for successful pre-scribing:
• Match the symptoms carefully tothe best homeopathic (most sim-ilar) medicine you can find.
• Take one pill. If you feel better, there is no need to repeat unlessthe same symptoms return.
• For home prescribing, stick to30c or lower potencies.

Aside from making you horribly toxic, alcohol makes you feel like death by dehy-drating you. They say that humans areabout 65% water (it’s a mystery how “they”know these things), which is why dehydra-tion is one of the fastest ways to feel sub-human known to man (and woman).
What to do, post-error-of–judgment?Take herbal tincture of either Chelidoniumor Milk Thistle to support your poor liver.Put up to five drops in each glass of water.
Try the “Bloody Mary of Homeopathy,”Nux vomica. It often helps, especially if you
are grumpy and chilly when hung over. Itdoesn’t work for everyone and, sadly, neverworks for me, as I am always sweet andpenitent after such misdemeanors.
If you feel dehydrated try a dose ofChina 6c or 30c.
In-laws?Aside from a life of celibacy there is noknown cure for in-laws.
Kids?Ditto … however … it may interest you toknow that over-excited children whowon’t go to sleep will often sleep the sleepof angels after one dose of Coffea. Over-tired, over-stimulated children who throwthings, shout a lot, and make you yearn tobe single again will often sleep the sleep ofangels after a dose of Chamomilla.
Fear of poverty?A recent credit card survey shows adults inthe US spend an extra $1200 or so over TheHolidays, so, depending on your personal
reserves, a fear of poverty is either delu-sional or entirely justifiable. If you fall intothe latter category, it may help you to knowthat I read on the back of a matchbox oncethat the best things in life are free.
In bed I’m laying, with…... I’m guessing, total exhaustion, thinking,“This Turkey thang, didn’t we just do it amonth ago?”
Time then for another thought fromthe Ancient Romans, whose impoverishedculture knew nothing of Thanksgiving or
The Holidays (butknew a thing or two about overdoing):
“Take rest; a field that has rested gives abountiful crop.” —Ovid (43 BC–17 AD)
I’m pretty sure Ovid had servants. Youprobably don’t, unless you count electro-domestic appliances. Nevertheless, if youare tired: lie down! You know it makessense. When scheduling all that holidayfun, always schedule in realistic recoverytime between each joyous shindig.
If you really have to keep going, youcan cheat by taking a dose of Arnica. It’sgreat for giving a second wind whenyou’re exhausted. It is known for helpingwomen in labor, Tour de France cyclists, and travelers with jet lag who all need tokeep going in spite of exhaustion. Butremember, taking Arnica in these situa-tions resembles borrowing on a “personalenergy credit card”; you will have to paythat borrowed energy back by having aproper rest or suffer the consequences ofgoing into deep personal energy debt, which is not a good look.
Poor head a-swimming?Nux vomica will help headaches with ver-tigo brought on by alcohol.
Bright eyes a-milking? Vi-sion a-dancing?Euphrasia is great for irritated eyes. Or trya Euphrasia eye bath by making up someeyebright tea and putting the cooledteabags on your eyes. It’s also a goodexcuse for having to lie down with youreyes closed!
Cholesterol a-leaping?Is that the good or the bad cholesterol? Isanyone else confused or is it just me? Theanswer is fiber, apparently.
Problems with your piping?“They” tell us that the digestive canal is 30feet long. When you think about howsomething that long is crammed inside us,the surprising thing is that it works sowell. It is not at all surprising that TheHolidays with their payload of turkey, figgy pudding, and innumerable othernormally forbidden fruits take their toll. Here is a mini A to Z of homeopathicmedicines that may help alleviate thesymptoms of seasonal stuffing:
Antimonium crudum. Indigestion withrheumatic and gouty pains. Acute attacksmay be brought on by overeating or (sour)wine. 19th century landed gentry kind ofvibe. Think Jane Austen.
China. Distended, colicky, rumbling, fermenting, with flatulence and belching(which brings no relief). Do not expect to

be invited anywhere again. Coffea. Acid indigestion with a sense of
fullness or cramps. May be accompaniedby weakness, nervousness, and even palpi-tations. Suits those who get over-excitedand suffer after too much fun.
Carbo veg. Sluggish and cold, withbloating and flatulence, feels better afterburping or when being fanned (althoughit’s hard to find volunteers for this, as it isnot an attractive state). Worse after over-eating, eating rich foods, and drinkingalcohol.
Lycopodium. Feels full quickly. Bloatingworse from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., relieved bypassing wind. Grumpy with nearest anddearest, but can be charming to others.
Nux vomica. Chilly and cross with gas-tric pains from alcohol abuse or from over-eating. Best sent to bed without supper.
Pulsatilla. For those who are sweet-natured, but highly vulnerable to tearful-ness and wandering abdominal pains.Worse for overheated or stuffy rooms, overeating, eating fatty foods, and anyemotional upset or excitement. Oftenneeded for children, especially if you wantto say “Aaaaaaah, bless them.”
Sanguinaria. Burning, gastric pains, after over-eating and consumption ofalcohol.
Your heart a-drumming?A dose of the homeopathic remedy Coffeamay do the trick if you are just sufferingfrom over-excitement, but if you areunfortunate enough to suffer full-blownpanic attacks with palpitations, Aconitemay be needed as emergency first aid. Assoon as you can, seek constitutionalhomeopathic treatment, to decrease your
susceptibility to such suffering in the yearsto come. (Any time you experience symp-toms that could be heart-related, seek pro-fessional medical advice, of course!)

Breathe EasilyBreathe EasilyI diagnosed Tricia with acute bron -
chitis, a problem that compels more than14 million people in the US to visit theirdoctors each year. Acute bronchitis is aninfection of the bronchial tubes—the air-ways that connect the windpipe (trachea)to the lungs. The bronchial lining becomesinflamed and this triggers an annoyingcough. The cough may bring up thickwhite, yellow, or greenish mucus. You may
have chills, a mild fever, shortness ofbreath, soreness or a tight feeling in thechest, wheezing, and a headache.
Antibiotics won’t helpConventional medicine can’t offer muchto speed healing for acute bronchitis;more than 90% of cases are viral vs. bacte-rial, so antibiotics won’t help. Cough sup-pressants may actually hinder healingbecause the body needs to eliminateinfected mucus from the bronchial tubes.
But who has time for coughs that canlast for a week or longer? Not many of us.And if antibiotics and cough suppressantsaren’t effective, then what can a persondo? Fortunately, homeopathic remediescan treat viral infections effectively.Patients usually start feeling better soonafter taking a well-prescribed remedy.Acute bronchitis can be treated safely andeffectively by the home prescriber, although persistent coughs may require ahomeopathic professional.
A struggle to walk the dogsTricia, a driven, hard-working, formercorporate executive, kept pushing eventhough she wasn’t feeling well. She wasstruggling to walk the dogs in her care, since her cough became much worse outin the cold Chicago air.
When she woke in the morning, shewould have a severe coughing fit for atleast an hour. The dry cough led to retch-ing. Even so, she couldn’t easily cough upany discharge. While coughing, Triciawould perspire from her neck to her waist. She was also running a low-grade fever.
After a long day at work, she wouldfinally drop into bed around 11 p.m. Fromthat moment until about 3 a.m., the
coughing and retching would keep herawake. Then she would sleep from 3 a.m.until her alarm went off.
In deciding on a remedy for Tricia, Iconsidered all her symptoms: she hadbeen overworking; her dry cough wasworse at night and early in the morning, worse from breathing cold air, and worsewhen lying. All these symptoms pointedme to the remedy Nux vomica. On Decem-ber 27, 2006, I advised Tricia to take a fewdoses of Nux vomica 30c—but her coughdid not improve.
Upon further study of the homeo-pathic literature, I found that the time ofher cough, 11 p.m. until 3 a.m., was ratherunusual. In fact, only one remedy isknown for this symptom—Squilla mar-itima. People needing Squilla often haveailments that take several days to develop, and in this case, Tricia’s mid-Decemberlaryngitis had taken awhile to progress tobronchitis. On December 28, I gave herSquilla 200c.
At Tricia’s follow-up call two weeks later, she reported that immediately after takinga dose of Squilla, she had slept through thenight for the first time in 12 nights. Theretching had stopped. Tricia had taken adose of Squilla once each evening for threenights in a row, and then she no longerneeded to take it because her cough was 90
to 95% better. Tricia was thrilled with thesequick results and happy that she could onceagain devote her full energy to her businessand to the animals in her care.
Is that nagging cough bronchitis?People with acute bronchitis typicallyhave a bad cough that produces mucus. Itoften comes on after another respiratoryinfection, such as a cold or flu. To diag-
nose bronchitis, the doctor takes a historyand then listens to the patient’s chest witha stethoscope. Certain sounds, such ascrackling, wheezing, and bubbling, indi-cate narrowing of the airways. Oftentimesthe patient with bronchitis has normalbreath sounds or only an intermittentcrackle, wheeze, or rattle. If the wheezingis more persistent, then other conditionssuch as asthma might be present. If thedoctor hears crackling sounds localized toone part of the lung, then pneumoniamust be considered. The doctor may askabout nighttime coughing, which oftenaccompanies bronchitis.
The doctor may test lung function byhaving the patient breathe into a spirome-ter, which measures the amount of airentering and leaving the lungs. Lung func-tion of less than 80% may indicate bron-chitis or a related lung disease. Many lungdiseases like pneumonia, for instance, have symptoms similar to bronchitis. Totell them apart, a doctor may order a chestX-ray (to differentiate pneumonia), anelectrocardiogram, blood tests, and teststhat measure how effectively the lungs areexchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide. Most often, however, the diagnosis ismade from a simple history of cough ofrecent onset and an examination of thehead, neck, and chest.
If antibiotics and cough suppressants aren’t effective, then what can a person do? Fortunately, homeopathic remedies can treat viral infections effectively.

About 50% of people with acute bron-chitis have a cough that lasts up to 3 weeks, but another 25% may struggle with theproblem for a month or longer. Some peo-ple seem to have a susceptibility to bron-chitis, like a young patient of mine, Sally.
A wretched, retching coughI first saw Sally for recurrent asthmaticbronchitis when she was one and a halfyears old. I’ve been treating her ever sincewith homeopathic remedies and havenever resorted to the steroids and antibi-otics that are commonly dispensed for thisproblem. She’s done very well and her fam-ily is happy with the results, but Sally stillseems to have a susceptibility to bronchitis.
When Sally, now 11, came to see me inMarch 2007, she had a constant, irritatingcough accompanied by gagging and retch-ing. She had noticed that her cough wasbetter after a bout of diarrhea. I gave herSanguinaria 200c because it is known totreat retching coughs accompanied bystomach disorders, and the person need-ing this remedy typically feels better afterdiarrhea.
Sally’s cough improved slightly, but thenext day more symptoms developed. Thisis common with acute illnesses; symptomsmay change quickly, and when they do, adifferent remedy, chosen based on the newsymptoms, may be needed. Sally was nowburping and passing gas after coughing,
instead of having diarrhea. A deep breathwould trigger a coughing attack, as didgoing from a cold to a warm room or viceversa. She had also developed a slightwheeze on exhalation, indicating acutebronchitis with an asthmatic component.
Sally wanted to be comforted and heldby her parents, so I considered Pulsatilla, but she wasn’t tearful or afraid as onemight expect in a person needing Pul-satilla, only slightly worried. Sally nor-mally liked fruit, but now that she wassick, she didn’t want to eat it. When goingoutdoors, she would cover up her mouthand also bundle up in many layers. A per-son needing Pulsatilla would typically feelbetter in the fresh, cool air. Sally didn’t, soI considered Phosphorus.
Phosphorus has the keynote symptom:cough that gets worse on going from coldair to warm air or vice versa. But Phospho-rus didn’t entirely match Sally’s symptoms
either. Rumex, however, is indicated forburping and flatus after coughing, as wellas for aggravation from changes in airtemperature. Patients needing Rumex mayalso be averse to fruit. To confirm Rumex,I asked Sally to take a deep breath, thentake a shallow breath, then another deepbreath, and so on. Sally started coughingafter breathing this way. If a cough occursafter this type of breathing, it confirmsRumex, which is indicated for coughs thatare worse from irregular breathing.
I gave Sally Rumex 200c to be repeatedevery two hours as needed. When hermother called two days later, she reportedthat Sally had slept for 12 hours withoutcoughing and was at least 75% better. Sallycontinued to improve after that.
Five weeks later, Sally started itching andhad a slight cough. Based on these symp-toms, I gave her Sulphur, which often helpsto fully resolve an acute illness and restorehealth after a severe illness. Sally quicklyimproved and has been well since then.
Baby avoids hospitalizationWhen Kevin, a 4-month-old baby, arrivedin my office on March 17, 2006, he waswheezing, had a rattling cough, andappeared very ill. After listening to hislungs and observing his symptoms, Istrongly suspected bronchiolitis which isusually caused by Respiratory SyncytialVirus (RSV) and occurs in infants and
Home Care for Bad CoughsIn addition to giving a homeopathic remedy, I often suggest the following tips:
Stay hydrated and run a humidifier.
Eat foods high in vitamin C.
Avoid mucus-producing foods, such as dairy products.
Avoid acetaminophen (Tylenol®) or ibuprofen (Motrin®, Advil®) for feveraccompanying a cough. I often see the cough worsen when these medica-tions are used. By suppressing a fever, they weaken the immune responseand prolong the illness, in my opinion. A high fever is a sign of a healthyimmune response. Fever-reducing medications also mask symptoms, makingit difficult to select a helpful homeopathic remedy. (Note: A fever higherthan 104°F is cause for concern and efforts to bring the fever down, such assponging and medication, may be needed; always seek professional help insuch cases.)
Be patient; you may need more than one remedy to completely recover.Sometimes, in order to resolve severe coughs, you will need to repeat a remedy a few times each day over the course of a few days.
For patients under the care of a homeopathic practitioner, sometimes the best treatment for an acute problem like bronchitis is to repeat the chronicremedy; call your homeopath.
To confirm [the need for] Rumex, I asked Sally to take a
deep breath, then take a shallow breath,
then another deep breath, and so on.

children under two years of age, with apeak incidence at 6 months of age. Bron-chiolitis is an inflammation of the bron-chiole membranes, the smaller tubes thatbranch off the bronchial tubes. RSV infec-tions usually occur in the winter and earlyspring and last about a week, but somecases may last several weeks. The source ofthe infection is usually another older fam-ily member with a relatively minor respi-ratory illness. The bronchiolar swellingthat occurs with this virus goes unde-tected in older children and adults becauseof their larger airways. However, in a 6-month-old, this bronchiolar swelling pro-duces obvious wheezing and respiratorydifficulty, which can at times be life threat-ening. The diagnosis of bronchiolitis is aclinical one—that is, based on wheezing ina small child in the winter or spring fol-lowing a few days of a mild cold with afever of 100–102°F. Nasal swab tests candetect RSV, but these are usually onlydone in a hospital setting.
Little Kevin was on the brink of beinghospitalized, but his mother, an ICUnurse, had experience nursing one of herother sons through bronchiolitis at home. She also had access to an oxygen satura-tion meter, oxygen, and a nebulizer. Anebulizer is a device that makes a cool fog;when inhaled, the fog goes deep into thelungs, hydrating respiratory tissues andmoving mucus out of bronchioles andbronchial tubes. Sometimes only a sterilesaline solution is used in the nebulizer, other times a medication is added to helpopen constricted airways.
When Kevin cried, coughing com-menced. The cough was better when he satup. Kevin’s extremities appeared mot-tled—white and pale with some lacey- reddish blotches. Despite the coughing, this normally good-spirited baby was onlyslightly cranky and irritable.
I decided to give Kevin Lachesis becausehe was waking with the cough, had mot-tled skin, and his wheezing was betterwhen he held his head up—all symptomsconsistent with Lachesis. Patients needingLachesis commonly wake from sleep withan aggravation of symptoms, as Kevin did,and I have often seen Lachesis addresscases of RSV bronchiolitis in infants.Patients needing Lachesis develop a con-stricted feeling in the chest that wakensthem after midnight and is accompanied

Homeopathic Remedies CanHelp Acute Bronchitis
W hile many homeopathic remediesaddress inflammation of the bronchialtubes, here are a few that can help
bronchial-type coughs. Take a few pellets in the6c or 30c potency under the tongue every one tofour hours, as needed depending on the severityof the problem. As you begin to feel better, decrease the frequency of the dose; discontinuedosing altogether when you’re feeling well.
Phosphorus. Treats coughs that worsen whengoing from cold air to warm air or vice versa. Use-ful for hard, racking, burning coughs. The personfeels tightness across the chest, as if there is a weight on the chest. Thecough is dry at night, but in the morning lots of sputum is coughed up. Atickling sensation in the throat triggers the cough. The cough is worse fromtalking, laughing, or lying on the left side.
Pulsatilla. A person needing this remedy will have a loose cough in themorning and expectorate much mucus, but in the evening and at night, thecough becomes dry and the patient must sit up in bed to get relief. Theexpectoration is bland (not burning), thick, and greenish. The chest feelssore. Shortness of breath, anxiety, and palpitation can occur when lying onthe left side. Symptoms are worse when lying down and when in a warmroom; better when sitting up and in cold air. This remedy is homeopathicallyprepared from the wind flower/Pasque flower.
Rumex crispus. This remedy, prepared from the yellow dock plant, has astrong affinity for the respiratory system. In many cases, the cough is caused by an incessant tickling in the throat-pit; the tickling runs down into the bronchial tubes. The cough is worse from exposure to cold air and is improved by covering up the body and head and by covering themouth with the hand. The patient may have diarrhea, typically early in themorning, with the cough. Rumex is indicated for coughs that are worsefrom irregular breathing.
Squilla maritima. This remedy, prepared from the sea-onion plant, is givenfor broncho-pneumonia, acute bronchitis, and chronic bronchitis. The per-son needing this remedy may have moist mucous rales (a bubbling soundwhen fluids are present in the bronchial tubes), shortness of breath, andscanty urine. They may have a runny nose, sneezing, an irritated throat, anda short, dry cough. They can have shortness of breath/difficult breathingand stitches in the chest, accompanied by painful contraction of abdominal muscles. The cough is provoked by taking a deep breath or by cold drinks, and is worse from 11 p.m. until 3 a.m., from exertion, and on going fromwarm air to cold air.
Sulphur. This remedy is known to finish treatment for stubborn coughs that have been helped by other remedies, but have not fully resolved. Thisremedy helps people who have difficulty breathing in a warm room and feel better with fresh air; they usually want the windows to be open. Thecough wakes them up at night, and their sides hurt from the coughing. They may have a loose, rattling cough that produces greenish discharge; the cough may be worse from talking and worse in the morning. They mayhave accompanying skin complaints, such as a rash.
by slow, heavy wheezing; they must sit upand bend forward. Kevin was wheezingand appeared better when sitting up.Kevin’s mother dissolved a pellet of Lach-esis 200c in a half cup of water and gaveher baby the remedy as needed.
In addition, Kevin’s mother nebulizedhim with sterile saline solution. SinceKevin responded quickly to Lachesis, hedid not need medications added to thenebulizer nor did he need oral bronchio -dilator medication, which opens con-stricted airways.
Kevin took the Lachesis 200c threetimes a day for three days. He onlyrequired oxygen on the first night andavoided a hospital stay. The bronchiolitisresolved within a week.
You have choicesIf you see a conventional doctor for asevere cough, you’ll often be given antibi-otics, even though most bronchitis is viraland antibiotics won’t help—except insmokers who do develop bacterial bron-chitis. If you’re coughing and wheezing, the doctor may prescribe medicines likebronchodilators or steroids to open con-gested airways and reduce inflammation. The doctor may suggest acetaminophenor ibuprofen for fever and pain, alongwith a cough suppressant or expectorant.
If a cough is productive (i.e., bringingup phlegm), cough suppressants are notindicated. Expectorating mucus is impor-tant because it keeps airways open andrids the body of waste products and harm-ful materials. People with bronchitis mayget relief from expectorant cough medi-cines, however, which can help to makemucus in the airways thinner and easier tocough up.
In my experience, many of these med-ications give only minimal support andoften weaken the immune system. Home-opathic remedies can resolve a cough, strengthen the immune system, and overtime, with proper constitutional care, resolve the tendency to acquire bronchitisor other severe coughs.
Sweet reliefAfter taking the appropriate homeopathicremedy, people like Tricia and Sally experi-ence relief from their cough, get muchneeded sleep, and are back on their feetattending to their lives, and some babieslike Kevin can avoid the trauma of a trip tothe hospital. In the long run, homeopathiccare helps a person overcome bronchitisquickly, without unnecessary conventionaldrugs and their side-effects. Think ofhomeopathy as your first line of defense!

Drug Makers Pull Kids’Cough Medicines
On October 11, 2007, leading drugmakers announced they would stopselling some popular children’s over-
the-counter cold and cough medicines, afteran FDA review linked 54 infant and toddlerdeaths to them. In addition to being dan-gerous, they do not provide infants or tod-dlers much relief, many doctors say.
The decongestants, expectorants, andantitussives being removed were marketedfor children age 2 and younger. Some offi-cials, however, question whether similardrugs aimed at older children should also beremoved. According to ABC News: “Pastreports also suggest that the medicationsmay even pose a risk of life-threateningadverse effects even for children as old as 6.These effects include hallucinations, seizuresand potentially fatal heart problems.”
The NCH replied with a press releaseadvocating homeopathic treatment as asafe, effective alternative. Read the releaseand access the many cold, cough, and flutreatment articles at NationalCenter-ForHomeopathy.org

The Sleep of AngelsLong-suffering baby blissful again: whooping cough healedby STEVEN COWARD, ND
Madison was an eight-month-old girlwho came to see me in May 2005. She hadcontracted whooping cough (pertussis) inJanuary when she was three months old. Atfirst, her medical doctor insisted that shehad allergies, despite her mother’s insis-tence that she could have whooping cough. Finally, Madison was tested (by sending aswab of nasal secretions to the lab), and theresults were positive for pertussis. Antibi-otics were prescribed, but it was too late.Once the symptoms of whooping coughset in, antibiotics will not help. Madisonhad also taken the homeopathic remedySpongia tosta, prescribed by anotherhomeopath, but to no avail.
Blue, limp, & coughing all nightMadison’s cough was waking her seven toeight times each night—a hard, wet coughthat would end in choking. Afterwards, she would turn bluish and go limp fromexhaustion. The cough could come on atany time, but it was worse when she waslying down, either to nap during the dayor to sleep at night. Twenty minutes ormore after she lay down, she would startcoughing. Madison’s mother reported thatwhile the cough sounded very wet, herdaughter could not raise any mucus.
Madison also had symptoms of hayfever. Her nose was stuffy and runny withslightly yellow mucus, requiring suction-ing a couple times each day and eachnight. She had also been suffering witheczema for months—on the back of herhead, down her back, on her shoulders, and on her chest. Neither the eczema northe hay fever had any remarkable charac-teristics. In general, Madison tended tosweat about her head, especially in sleep, though not excessively.
When I examined Madison, sheappeared to be a little pale but otherwise
alert and happy. Her lungs sounded clearon normal respiration, but she had briefspells of a mild, wet cough a couple timesin the office. Her mother said that thesespells were very mild compared to hernighttime bouts of coughing.
Keynote symptoms Based on the classic keynote indications ofa rattling cough without expectoration, worse lying down and better sitting up,bluish discoloration, great fatigue, andsweat on the head, I prescribed the home-opathic remedy Antimonium tartaricum200c diluted in water. Her mother gave herone drop by mouth.
When we followed up in one week,Madison’s mom was happy to report muchimprovement in her daughter’s condition. The child was now sleeping through thenight—she might cough mildly a fewtimes per night, but not badly enough towake her up. The eczema rash had initiallygotten worse after taking the remedy, but it
was now gone, and her skin was totallyclear. Her nose was no longer stuffy, andher mother had to wipe it with a tissuemaybe once a day. When I checked in withMadison’s mom a week later, she said thather daughter’s cough was all but gone.
Madison continued to do well the fol-lowing year with no more coughing or hayfever problems. A number of months afterher whooping cough disappeared, hereczema flared up again, but it disappearedpromptly after I prescribed a dose of Sul-phur, based on her symptoms at that time.
Other coughs, other remediesMany homeopathic remedies have thepotential to treat whooping cough andother kinds of coughs. The Spongia tostathat Madison had received is one suchremedy, but a cough requiring Spongia isvery dry and sounds “like a saw driventhrough a pine board.” The cough is usu-ally worse at night after lying down, espe-cially around midnight. Spongia must be
One beautiful benefit of homeopathic practice is the ability to help a sufferingchild. I recently treated an infant with lingering whooping cough with a classic remedy that isworth revisiting.

differentiated from other dry cough reme-dies, such as Aconite and Drosera.
A dry cough requiring Aconite is alsoworse at night around midnight, but theAconite modalities are distinctive: Aconiteailments come on after exposure to drycold weather, or they may be brought on byfright or accompanied by great fearfulness.
A person needing Drosera will have adry cough that repeats frequently, a“minute gun cough,” and doesn’t allow thepatient a chance to catch her breath. Whilethe cough may be non-existent all day, itwill come on the moment the patient laysher head on her pillow to rest. Note that inMadison’s case, the cough did not comeon until 20 minutes after lying down.
Antimonium tartaricum is one of manyremedies for a wet or rattling cough. Coc-cus cacti is another great remedy forwhooping cough with rattling in the chest. While a cough needing Antimonium tar-taricum produces no expectoration, thecough needing Coccus cacti will end withprofuse expectoration of clear mucus. Themucus is ropy and tenacious, and maycause choking.
Hepar sulphuris is another remedy thatwill treat a wet cough. People who needHepar sulphuris can be very irritable andfeel very cold with sensitivity to the leastdraft of air, although they tend to be sweaty. They expectorate thick, yellow mucus.
Natrum sulphuricum may be indicatedfor a wet cough that is greatly aggravatedby a change to damp weather.
Individualization is keyThe key to Madison’s cure, as in all home-opathic cures, was finding the remedy spe-cific to the case of disease at hand. In thiscase, the remedy not only freed Madisonfrom the miserable and exhausting cough-ing bouts that she’d been suffering withfor four months, but it also cleared hereczema and hay fever symptoms as well. What a beautiful art and science this is tobring about a cure with such expedience!

Use these charts as a starting point when choosing a homeopathic remedy for acough that follows an upper respiratory infection. Take the indicated remedy in a30X or 30c potency according to the severity of the symptoms: more often (every 1–2 hours) if the symptoms are severe and less often (every 3–4 hours) if they arenot too bad. Stop and start the remedy as needed: back off if you feel better—andrepeat it only if the symptoms start to return again. If you have taken about sixdoses and had no response, then it’s likely that you selected the wrong remedy.Check your symptoms again and find another remedy, or seek professional help.

Some caregivers and dying patients areturning to homeopathy for comfort andrelief of symptoms. They are finding thathomeopathic medicines often reduce oreven preclude the need for strong pharma-ceuticals. Homeopathic medicines will notstupefy or dull the patient, nor will theycause constipation, a depressed breathingrate, or toxicity, as will morphine. This canimprove the quality of life in one’s last days
and allow for more meaningful, consciousinteraction with loved ones.
Hospice opportunitiesHospice health care workers are almostuniversally very caring professionals; theyare skilled in minimizing pain and suffer-ing using potent analgesics and otherdrugs. Unfortunately, sometimes heavysedation and treatments for nausea, agita-tion, fear, swelling, and excessive secre-tions can create more toxicity, leading toliver shut-down and depressed breathing, and hastening a coma-like, drugged death. It may seem easier and savvy to accepteverything that conventional medicinehas to offer a dying patient, but believeme, this is an idealized view of the situa-tion. Although pain medications are oftennecessary and merciful, they do not ensurethat one will have a “good death.”
Even in conventional medical circles, itis universally accepted that no specifictherapy or modality is to be excluded fromconsideration in helping to bring comfortto a dying patient. In my eyes, the end oflife is an appropriate time for us to beassertive about using homeopathic medi-cine. It would be ideal if homeopathy werean option in all hospice situations. When Icontacted my local hospice to offer myservices, the doctor, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and staff members wereeager to learn about a more natural, holis-tic approach to end-of-life care. The factthat homeopathic medicines do not inter-act with conventional drug treatment reg-imens or produce side effects was a realplus in their minds, as was the low cost ofhomeopathic medicines.
Until homeopathy becomes moremainstream in hospice care, however, fam-ilies will need to consult with a privatehomeopathic practitioner to help themthrough that most difficult of life’s transi-tions—death. A motivated family can take
charge and integrate customized homeo-pathic treatment into the care plan. Home-opathic alternatives to conventional drugscan be found for almost every situation, asyou will see in the examples that follow.
Gentle care for a cruel illnessMy interest in end-of-life care was stimu-lated when I treated a man who was diag-nosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (alsoknown as Mad Cow Disease in animals). This rare and fatal condition causes degen-eration of the brain, making it mushy orspongy. “Paul” and his family had beentold that there was nothing doctors coulddo for him. It was a tragic situation; Paulwas not even allowed into the hospital dueto the hospital’s inability to control trans-mission of the prions, which are found inthe blood and other bodily fluids.
When the family called me, Paul was
still somewhat lucid and functioning.Over the next four months, however, heexperienced every stage you would expectwhen the brain is going through theprocess of dissolving and becoming rid-dled with holes. Paul’s close-knit familywas committed to helping him in what-ever way they could, and his daughter-in-law served as the liaison to communicatewith me and observe his condition objec-tively so that we could decide togetherwhen to administer the homeopathicmedicines and when changes in his treat-ment plan were needed.
At first, I held out hope of making adifference in the disease outcome and gaveremedies aimed at stopping the progres-sion—including repeated doses ofSyphilinum 1M, known in our homeo-pathic literature for helping conditions ofthe brain and degenerative processes. Butwe saw little result. I also tried giving himhis constitutional remedy, Nux vomica, chosen based on who he was in his formerlife just a few months prior—a high pow-

ered financial advisor. The family didnotice some improvement overall afterdoses of this remedy.
But soon Paul’s illness progressed, andhis symptoms became more peculiar: hewas disoriented, got lost when he wan-dered out the back door, began hoardingsilver and jewelry and worrying whetherthese valuables would be taken from him, poured water back and forth betweenpitchers, engaged in spitting, and had hal-lucinations. He would tap his fingers in arhythm on the table almost as if trying tocommunicate this way, and he seemedsomewhat manic. Based on these symp-toms, I gave Stramonium, and his familyreported a definite soothing of thesesymptoms. Rigidity and poor circulationtook over next, as if his muscles werelocked and jerking, with bluish discol-oration and coldness of his hands. Hewould stare at his hands and say, “I don’twant to lose my fingers.” This was heart-breaking to hear. Based on these symp-toms, he received doses of Agaricus 200c,and the coldness and rigidity moderated.
Eventually, Paul stopped being able towalk or talk, and he had to stay in bed. Heseemed to be in pain at times because hemoaned, but he was still in eye contactwith his family and held their hands. Thisis when the hospice nurses intervened andtold the family that Paul should havesomething for pain; so the family agreed
to a dose of morphine. Afterwards, Paulslept for 24 hrs with no sign of conscious-ness—no pain was apparent, but no con-sciousness either. The family wasdismayed that they could not interact withtheir beloved father so close to the end;they felt that the medication was excessive. So they let that dose of morphine wear offand refused further dosing.
Paul woke up and came back to them forone more day. If he started to moan, thefamily would give him a dose of the home-opathic remedy Magnesium phosphoricum200c, which seemed to relieve him whileallowing him to be emotionally present. When Paul’s breathing became labored andthey could hear mucus rattling, they gavehim Antimonium tartaricum, which seemedto make his breathing quieter and easier ashe gradually slipped away. Paul’s family wasvery thankful to have had their father pres-ent with them—without heavy sedation—right to the end and grateful that they hadaccess to homeopathic treatment.
What can you expect? Not every dying person will go throughthe drastic changes that Paul wentthrough at the end of his life. But the tran-sition from life to death is rarely easy, nomatter what treatment modalities areused. Even so, this example shows how afamily can keep their loved one reasonablycomfortable throughout the process—in a
more holistic manner and with moreemphasis on quality of life.
Common end-stage symptoms such asnausea, breathing difficulty, excessivesecretions, insomnia, and pain, as well asemotional upsets like fear, grief, and anxi-ety, can be successfully addressed withhomeopathic treatment. It may be best toget professional homeopathic help, butthere are some specific treatments that Ihave seen work well and can be tried bythose helping their loved one.
I suggest starting by choosing anappropriate homeopathic remedy andusing the 30c potency. If you see noimprovement after 3 to 5 doses, reassessand try a different remedy or give conven-tional medicine. If symptoms are relievedfor a while but then return, raise thepotency to 200c. Doses may be repeated“as needed” and can be given even as oftenas every 5 or 10 minutes, if necessary. Oneor two tablets or pellets may be placedinside the patient’s lip if they are unable totake it themselves or may be dissolved inwater and a drop placed in the mouth.
Relieving nauseaNausea is the symptom that the hospicenurses I’ve spoken with are most eager torelieve because it’s such a common condi-tion among their patients. When nauseaand/or vomiting are present, I suggest try-ing the homeopathic remedy Ipecac (NOTthe syrup in the drugstore but homeopath-ically prepared Ipecac). I remember onecase of an aged woman dying of diabeticcomplications who would have bouts ofnonstop nausea and vomiting for threedays straight, leading to a very debilitatedstate. Homeopathic Ipecac greatly easedand shortened these episodes; afterwards,we used the remedy China (also known asCinchona), which is good for relievingweakness from loss of fluids, and sherecovered from the episodes much morequickly than before. Another good remedyto address nausea is Nux vomica. I haveseen this remedy help numerous patientsat the end of life; I’ve also used it to helpcancer patients struggling with the nauseathat may accompany chemotherapy, as it isknown to clear bad effects of drugs. A goodway to decide between Ipecac and Nuxvomica is to look at the tongue: if it’scoated and toxic looking, try Nux vomica;if it’s relatively clear, try Ipecac.
Cure or palliation?Healing does not always mean curing. This can be a difficult concept for us toaccept, but it’s something we must face eventually.
Homeopathic philosophy tells us that the simillimum, the remedy chosenbased on the totality of symptoms, is always the best treatment and can havedeep-acting, curative effects. But when such a remedy cannot be found or isnot working, time is short, and the patient needs relief, we do our best to pal-liate the symptoms.
Palliation of symptoms for incurable patients is part of our homeopathic lit-erature and history. In his Lectures on Materia Medica, James Tyler Kent said:“When we have given up all hope, then we pay more attention to the mostpainful parts ... the local symptoms ... and attempt to do patch work ... patchhim up a little and make him feel more like life, and he will go on to the endwith more comfort.”
Kent continued: “If the sufferings in the chest and the exhaustion becomemost severe it is true that Arsenicum will patch him up a little and make himfeel more like life, and he will go on to the end with more comfort. If thepains in the chest are most severe such medicines as Senega or Bryonia willhelp him; if he is sore and feels as if bruised and he must move from side toside Arnica will relieve.”
These are not the remedies that will eradicate a deep-seated disease, Kentsaid, “Yet with these one may take a consumptive patient in comfort to the verygrave, by simply patching him up and prescribing for his immediate sufferings.”

Remedy with a reputationOf all the homeopathic remedies knownfor helping a dying person, Arsenicumalbum has the strongest reputation. It isknown to soothe the fear of death, and isindicated when there is agitation, restless-ness, thirst, great anguish, internal burningheat with external coldness, and a desirefor warmth. Many dying people seem toexperience such symptoms, and I haveknown it to be helpful in numerous cases.
In A Homœopathic Approach to Cancer,Dr. A.U. Ramakrishnan and Catherine R.Coulter write: “Arsenicum album is proba-bly the most often-used remedy in cancerpalliation. The patient is extremely restless, tosses and turns in bed, unable to find acomfortable position, and wants to get upand walk about. He moves from bed tosofa and back again, from room to room,or paces the room—not finding relief any-where. Great exhaustion, weakness, anddebility are present. There are burningpains that are relieved by heat. Nightlyaggravations (especially between midnightand 4:00 a.m.) occur. Often there is a con-
stant thirst or dryness of mouth that is notquenched by frequent sips of liquid. Thepatient is critical and sensitive to disorderaround him, and even when extremely ill, still directs the caretaker what to do. Hefears being left alone, fears death, and feelsit is useless to take medicines.”
If the person seems to be havinglabored breathing, wheezing or asthmaticsymptoms, or burning pains, Arsenicumalbum usually helps. It is also known tohelp the anxiety around not being able toget a good breath.
Pain reliefI have found the remedy Magnesia phos-phoricum useful for most every muscularpain, cramp, and abdominal pain—and itcan even be tried for headaches. Boericke’sMateria Medica calls it a great anti-spas-modic, useful for neuralgic pain that isbetter from warmth and well-suited totired, exhausted people. It helped “Paul” inthe end stages of his life, and I’ve seen ithelp others as well.
If the person has just had surgery or aninjury, then homeopathy’sall-purpose anti-trauma rem-edy, Arnica, will usually help.Pain may also be reducedgreatly by treating a person’sfear, grief, or anxiety (moreon this later).
In A Homœopathic Ap -proach to Cancer, the authorsdevote a whole chapter to“Pain Control in theAdvanced and Terminal Stagesof Cancer” with indicationsfor 11 remedies; it’s a usefulresource for helping anyonewith terminal illness. Theremedies are: Aconite, Arseni -cum album, Aurum metal-licum (bone pains), Cadmiumsulph (stomach cancer andbad effects of chemotherapy),Chelidonium (cancer painafter liver metastasis), Euphor-bium (burning pains of can-cer; similar to Arsenicum’sindications but the person isbetter from cold applications),Hydrastis, Magnesia phospho-ricum, Nux vomica (try thiswhen Arsenicum has ceased tohelp), Opium, and Plumbum
iodatum. [An abridged version of this chap-ter appeared in the July/August 2005 issueof Homeopathy Today, available to NCHmembers in the HT Online archives atwww.NationalCenterForHomeopathy.org.]
In his materia medica, HomeopathicRemedy Guide, Robin Murphy says thatTarentula hispanica should be given “topalliate death pains and agony.” He says its“action is similar to Arsenicum in manysymptoms, therefore when Arsenicumseems indicated but fails, it is better to giveTarentula.” Although I have not yet usedthis remedy in these circumstances, it isgood to remember, should the need arise.
Collapse At the end of life, complete collapse andexhaustion is common. Consider Carbovegetabilis; it’s known to help those withgreat weakness, faintness, bluish lips, icycold skin, and cool breath. Though thepatient is cold, they typically want a draftof air or the windows open. In his book,Resonance, Richard Moskowitz writes:“With deoxygenation also a cardinal fea-ture of the dying process, Carbo veg is wellknown as ‘the corpse reviver’ for its powerto prolong life in terminally ill patientssufficiently for wills, farewells, and otherlast arrangements to be made.”
A homeopathic nurse who has seenmany end-stage cases has suggested Cal-carea carbonica for very sick people whoare also putting out much perspiration(the medical term for this symptom isdiaphoresis and happens when one is inshock or having a medical emergency).
Breathing difficultiesAs death nears, breathing can become shal-low and quickened, or slow and labored. The person may make gurgling sounds, sometimes referred to as the “death rattle.”These sounds are due to the pooling ofsecretions, an inability to cough them up,and the air passing through the mucus.
The breathing pattern most disturbingto those present, called Cheyne-Stokesbreathing, is marked by periods of nobreathing at all followed by deeper andmore frequent respirations. This resultsfrom decreased oxygen supply to the vitalorgans and a build-up of waste products inthe body. It is not believed to be uncom-fortable or painful for the dying person, butit may be unsettling for those who hear it.
Share the Care! What a great idea! Share the Care, a book bySheila Warnock and Cappy Capossela, promotesgroup caregiving as a proven option for meetingthe needs of the seriously ill or dying. The bookoutlines how to take a group of ordinary indi -viduals, comprised of friends, relatives, neighbors, coworkers, and acquaintances, and turn them intoa “caregiver family” to provide individuals andfamilies with the help they need to meet the dailychallenges of caregiving.
A Share the Care team was set up to help my 95-year-old neighbor during her illness so that herdaughter would not have to do it all alone. Thisprevents burnout, and allows those closest to thesick person to have time to interact meaningfully.Learn more at www.sharethecare.org.

As previously mentioned, Arsenicumalbum is one remedy to consider for breath-ing difficulties. But when secretions buildup and create much rattling and mucus inthe chest, which the person is unable tocough up, Antimonium tartaricum is themain remedy. It is especially indicated whenthe person is very weak, becoming unre-sponsive, or in a passive, relaxed state.
In my research, I came across an addi-tional remedy to consider: “Solaninumvies with Ant. tart. in respiratory paraly-sis,” states Choudhuri in Studies of MateriaMedica. “... great accumulation of mucusin the larger air passages causing a regularrattling during inspiration. Hence likeAnt. tart, Solaninum should be particu-larly thought of in the death rattle ofpatients, which condition it removes mostmarvelously by enabling the patient toexpel the obstructing phlegm.”
Gentle reassuranceWhen a dying person has difficulties, breathing or otherwise, our job is to speakgently and lovingly and to use reassuringtouch to ease fear. Do not panic. This canincrease any fear that may already be pres-ent for the dying person.
If acute fear and panic occur, pleasegive this person Aconite—repeating thedose as often as needed. In my experience,Aconite is the best remedy when panic hasgripped the body and mind, the heart isracing, and the mind cannot relax itselfaway from distressing thought patterns. The person may have a look of fear intheir eyes or be so tense that it is notice-able in their appearance.
Here’s a typical example in whichAconite helped: a 78-year-old man hadbeen on dialysis for 6 years. When theshunt that allows access to the veinbecame clogged, he decided not toundergo the surgery needed to allow forfurther dialysis. His hospice care at homewith family support had been difficult butalso rewarding to all. As he approachedthe time of transition, he complained ofchest pains and panicky feelings, andseemed agitated and very tense. I coun-seled the family to administer Aconite asneeded, alternating with Rescue Remedy®.After each dose, their father visibly relaxedfor awhile. They continued to sit with himand reassure him as he slipped away overthe next several hours.
Soothing both caregiver and patientIt is possible and beneficial to enhance theemotional balance of the dying personand their loved ones as they go throughthe stresses and stages of this transition.
The cell salt Kali phosphoricum 6X, atonic for the nervous system, may helpcaregivers who feel tense, stressed, andoverwhelmed. I call it “homeopathic Val-ium.” About one in three people in mypractice who try it report a clear, immedi-ate response—like muscles relaxing andstress releasing! I suggest taking frequentdoses, like 4 to 6 times a day for physical aswell as mental stress relief.
The remedy Coffea can help those whoare alert and can’t sleep at bedtimebecause they are too wired and upset. Ihave found Hylands combination reme-dies Calms and Calms Forte very helpfulfor such situations as well. Arsenicum mayhelp those who cannot sleep due to worryand fear, while Ignatia will help a grievingperson sleep. Cocculus is known to helpthose who have lost much sleep as care-
takers of the sick and now have grief andhealth problems of their own.
I use flower essence formulas for emo-tional balancing—as an adjunct to homeo-pathic treatment—and I find that they canmake a big difference in whether stresseswill be overwhelming or not. I use BachFlower Remedies, Australian Bush FlowerEssences, and North American FlowerEssences as I search for the right combina-tion based on the current emotional state ofthe person. Rescue Remedy® is perfect forupset patients and their loved ones. Thiswell-known combination of five BachFlower remedies addresses panic, hopeless-ness, grief, trauma, and shock. It can also beused anytime upsetting symptoms are pres-ent—pain, agitation, fear, or sleep troubles.
When the grief of the situation starts tooverwhelm, think of Ignatia amara. It ismost useful during the acute, initial phaseof grief immediately before and after aloved one’s death, and is known as the“funeral remedy.” The sooner it is given, the better—not to suppress emotions butto allow for better coping and for avoidingconsequences of prolonged grief on thebody and mind. Mainstream medicinefreely gives hospice patients and any griev-ing family member anti-depressants andsedatives; I wish that instead, everyoneknew about Ignatia and other homeo-pathic remedies.
A meaningful passingThere are many things that families can doto soothe and bring comfort to their lovedones without—or right along side—phar-maceutical intervention. Healing does notalways mean curing. Sometimes it meanshelping the person prepare for death andspend the last days of this life in a mean-ingful way, amongst people they know andlove. And homeopathy is there to assist uswith this.
*Note: Homeopathy can be used when our pets aredying also. All this information can be extrapolatedover to our furry friends and can soothe the end-of-life time for animal and master.

Tuesdays with IngridLife lessons & managing end-of-life pain with homeopathyby IAN LUEPKER, ND
Seventy-three years old and diagnosedwith stage-four breast cancer involving dis-tant metastases, Ingrid retained her suppleand clear mind—a result of her choice toseek out homeopathy as an alternative tonarcotic (opioid-based) pain relief.
Stories and metaphorsIngrid and I met during the last fifteenmonths of her life, and a kind of Tuesdayswith Morrie relationship evolved. Raisedin a rural community in a large family ofeleven brothers and sisters, Ingrid sharedmore than good meals and blackberrycobbler with me at her table as sherecounted stories of her childhood andsiblings: a life-review of self-sufficiency, alarge and loving family, and a strong, sus-taining faith.
I recall Ingrid’s lively blue eyes as sheand her sister took turns relating a well-told family tale dating back more thansixty years. Ingrid was eleven years old andsteadying a ladder for her sister to pickluscious blackberries just barely out ofreach. The ladder slipped, and Ingrid’s sis-ter fell deep into the blackberry brier!Ingrid learned vicariously, from her sis-ter’s yelps and tears, that it’s easier to entera blackberry patch at high speed than tobe pulled from one slowly!
Later, I recognized the metaphoricalrelevance of this story to Ingrid’s cancer. Adiagnosis such as cancer happens sud-denly, but the healing journey out may begradual, painful, and complicated withdifficult choices.
Quality of life issuesEnd-of-life care is full of decisions thatmay impact the quality of life for thedying person and their family. Some of themost significant and challenging decisionssurround pain management and whatpain control methods to use.
With cancer, the pain is often so severethat narcotic pain relievers such as mor-phine and fentanyl seem to be the mosteffective way to manage it. Though theseanalgesics control pain well, their com-
Right up to the end of her life, Ingrid played a formidable game of
Scrabble! Six-letter words with strategic double and triple point placement seemed
the norm for her, and her mental sharpness and clarity never ceased to amaze me!

mon side effects—constipation, sleepi-ness, and mental confusion—may intrudeon the dying person’s quality of life.1
During a time when the person is say-ing their good byes, settling old business, and resolving conflict—mental clarity andalertness are often at a premium.
Part of a qualified health care practi-tioner’s responsibility to their patient is toprovide information about the pros andcons of various treatment options. When apatient indicates they have understoodthese options, and consents to a treatmentplan, we call this “informed consent.”
Particularly at the end of life, a thor-ough process of informing the patientabout all available options related to theircare empowers them and their family. Thisincludes advising patients about painmanagement options such as homeopathythat may help to address the pain withoutside effects.
Homeopathic helpWith metastases to her bones, often a verypainful location for cancer, Ingrid chosehomeopathy, hydrotherapy, and nutri-tional support to manage her pain. Eagerto help, I took her homeopathic case.
Ingrid described her bone pain as“burning,” and worse at night. Her painworsened, at least initially, with move-ment; but with continued movement her
pain abated somewhat. And though feel-ing colder than usual overall, somewhatsurprisingly she desired cold drinks.
Recognizing a “three-legged stool” ofthree characteristic symptoms supportingmy prescription, I selected a remedy I hadstudied in Mumbai, India, called Euphor-bium. Euphorbium is considered a “spe-cific” for bone cancer that burns “as if a livecoal had been placed on, or in the part.” 2
Along with Euphorbium, I consideredArsenicum and Rhus tox as possible rem-edy choices. Arsenicum is commonly indi-cated at the end of life, particularly forfeelings of anxiety, as well as for burningpains and restlessness; but patients need-ing Arsenicum tend to desire and feel bet-ter from warm drinks. Rhus tox is knownfor helping those who feel worse from ini-tial movement, and better from continuedmovement; but patients needing Rhus toxtend to be on the cold side and feel betterwith heat. Overall, Euphorbium bestmatched the uniqueness of Ingrid’s case, and I prescribed 30c to be taken up to
twice per day as needed for pain. Ingrid’s pain eased with each dose of
Euphorbium. When her cancer metasta-sized to her lungs, she began experiencinga wet cough that came on at night in bed.Her cough responded well to a few dosesof Antimonium tartaricum 30c.
Peaceful passingThough I wasn’t present during her lastweeks, her sisters told me Ingrid diedpeacefully. While attending her funeral andthe gathering afterwards, I had the pleas-ure of meeting more members of Ingrid’sloving family and hearing even more mov-ing stories about her. I reflected on the rolehomeopathy played in enabling Ingrid tofully participate in the last months of herlife, and the gratitude I felt for my oppor-tunity to share some of that time with her. 1. As we know from studying homeopathy, everyonewill respond differently to conventional medicationsbased on their susceptibility, and there is variabilityin whether or not someone will experience these sideeffects.

Homeopathic Remedy Pictures: Studying with Cartoonsby Alexander Gothe and Julia DrinnenbergHomeolink Publishers, 2007, softcover, 212 pages, approximately $70 USD.(Translated from Homöopatische Leit-Bilder, published by Karl F. Haug Verlag.)ISBN 978-90-807103-4-4
Reviewed by JAY YASGUR, RPh, MSc
With its large size (8.5" x 11"), glossypaper, and colorful images, it also makes agreat “coffee table book”—pick it up whenyou have a few minutes to refresh yourmemory about remedy indications, or justwhen you need a laugh.
The authors include fifty of the majorhomeopathic remedies. Each sectionbegins with an introductory page alongwith a photo of the remedy’s source. Forexample, the Aconite page includes a beau-tiful photo of the monkshood floweraccompanied by the following descrip-tion: “In former times, Aconite was used asa quick-acting poison. Nowadays, by con-trast, it is a valuable medicine in the treat-ment of highly acute, vehementconditions. The complaints are so intenseand frightening that the patients (like the
victims of poisoning) are certain they willdie very soon.”
This is followed by about fifteen of themajor aspects of the remedy in bullet-indicated paragraphs. Here are the firstthree for Aconite:
• Homeopathically, Aconite is suit-able for persons who suffer froman oversensitive nervous or car-diovascular system.
• The nervous system reacts after ashock or a fright, the cardio -vascular system reacts to beingexposed to cold wind or to heat. Both can produce a strong reac-tion in the form of an acute, sud-den and very intense illness, accompanied by anxieties and anenormous restlessness.
• Aconite is an important remedy forthe early stages of many illnessesand is often followed by other
remedies as the illness progressesor the symptoms change. Acuteinfections often start off withcomplaints typical of Aconite.
That material is then followed by thecartoons, approximately 10 to 15 of themper remedy. Remedy keynotes serve as captions. [See accompanying Aconitesamples.]
When beginners ask me for studyhints, I pass along one that my teachersgave me: “study one remedy per weekusing several different references.” Thisuseful addition will keep you from dozingoff in bed if for no other reason than itsvibrant color. And if there’s one thing Iknow for sure, homeopathy is anythingbut black and white.
This book is about just what the title says—homeopathicremedy pictures with some 600 cartoons. However, what the titledoesn’t say is that virtually all the thoughtfully drawn images are comical, and because of that, a reader can learn the materia medica ofthe remedies easily and quickly. To quote Harry van der Zee from thebook’s Forward: “The ability to laugh about each other, and ourselves, about our role as homeopaths or patients, is healing in itself. And Alexander and Julia have offered this very remedy to us with thismarvelous book.”
