And they all appreciate a pair of pants which lasts a full season without duct tape.

THE STATEMENT

HISTORYTOBE was founded in 2001 based on the idea of making nice and durable gear for the hard everyday life in the backcountry.

TOBE is based in a small town in northern Swe-den. Snowmobiling and skiing are the most popular sports around and we get our inspiration by just walking outside.

The design and production management is mostly an in-house process which gives us a unique con-trol of the different steps in our product develop-ment and production.

For nearly 10 years we’ve supplied snowmobilers around the world with high quality clothing made and tested by the riders themselves. We would never manufacture something that we wouldn’t use our selves. Because in the end, if we did, we would be just as cold and wet as our customers.

TOBE was founded in 2001 as a result of our dissatisfaction with the existing snowmobile fashion.Us founders of the company used to be passionate skiers and as kids we grew up with both snowmobi-ling and skiing. This gave us the best of both worlds and inspired us to start thinking about the equipment that was available for snowmobilers.

Most ski and snowboard gear is more technical and functional than the traditional snowmobile wear, but they it tends to will also wear out very fast. What we were looking for was something really waterproof, durable, loose-fitting but still nice looking. To make a long story short some friends got together and we started developing our own clothes to fit our purposes. What came out was a blend of stylish ski and snowboard gear combined with the functionality and durability you need to keep you dry and warm in a hostile environment like snowmobiling.

W.L. Gore and Associates, Inc. set the industry standard for this type of fabric in 1976 with its product Gore-Tex. Gore became the first to market a PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) membrane that could keep out wet while ventilating out moisture generated by your body. The story goes father back than this, almost to the 1950s when man experimented with various CFCs to increase the effectiveness of fridges. By chance, a brand new material was discovered, and was later named PTFE. It was a material with an entirely unique quality and endless areas of usage. PTFE is a very resistant, temperature impervious and nonflammable material with a low outer friction coefficient and a high impact resistance. Under the name Teflon, PTFE is used for, amongst other things, as a self-lubricating layer, but is best known for its usage in cooking pans, such as frying pans, to prevent food from burning and sticking to the pan.

There are numerous manufacturers of this membrane in the market. to be Technology has developed a membrane

named TOBE TECH™ in our 2-layer and 3-layer clothing. When a TOBE TECH™ membrane is produced, the PTFE is rolled out into a thin layer that is then stretched both length and width-wise. The large molecules are pulled apart and pores are formed between them. The pores of the material are incredibly small – approximately 20,000 times smaller than a water drop, but 700 times larger than a water molecule. This simple condition together with the material’s hydrophobia, water repellency, and character is the whole secret behind these unique qualities.

Sure, simple. But how does it really WORK?! Water drops are round in form and too large to seep through the small pores in the TOBE TECH™ membrane. The form of the water drops is retained thanks to the strong surface tension found in water. As well, water in liquid form cannot penetrate the membrane and the fabric onto which it is applied, making it waterproof. The fabric itself is further impregnated to render it water resistant and prevent it from appearing

wet. Wet from outside is thus taken care of, but you sweat when exerting yourself, making you wet and then cold if this moisture cannot be transported outwards. The opposite of water in liquid form, your sweat, or steam, is not composed of droplets, but lone water molecules that are so small, they can simply pass through the membrane’s pores. Moisture evaporating from the body can then be ventilated away.

Moisture in the form of steam is transported via a process called diffusion, from the warm inside of the jacket to the cold outside. Even if it is so cold that moisture freezes on the inside of the garment, PTFE is so hydrophobic that ice crystals cannot accumulate and clog the pores, because water will not condense on the hydrophobic surface. This way, breathability continues as long as the temperature is lower on the outside of the jacket, since steam pressure (but not the air pressure) is higher on the warm side. THIS IS HOW IT WORKS

At to be Technology, we work with what we do because we love winter sports. After countless occasions of getting stuck, snowstorms, crashes, sorrows and troubles, we know what we ourselves look for in a snowmobiling garment. We have been tired, wet and hungry, and know from personal experience how important clothing that keeps you dry is, while enduring the extreme conditions when going snowmobiling. We painstakingly choose the fabrics used in our various clothes. Different types of garments place different demands on the function of the fabric, such as in our pants where we use fabric with a high tear resistance and durability, while a jacket needs to be supple and thus receives a lighter material. Characteristic of all clothing

from to be Technology is the great importance we place on functionality and quality. The fabrics are carefully tested for their individual, unique qualities in a laboratory environment where, amongst other things, wear and durability are measured and evaluated so that we can guarantee that your garment will satisfy all your expectations.

SEAMSA fabric laminated with TOBE TECH™ is waterproof, which of course is ruined when sticking a hole through it to sew together the garment. To avoid this, all seams are taped with a special tape that is applied under pressure and heat to plug the small holes that would otherwise leak in water. In particular, we strive with our pants, since everyone

who has at one time sat in snow knows how water can press through badly constructed seams or inferior fabrics. The clothing is tested in a special machine where pressure from a 10,000 mm high water column is simulated before the garment is constructed and the design approved.

CAREAll to be Technology clothing with a TOBE TECH™ membrane will feel better when washed with a mild detergent in 40°C or 100°F. Do not use bleach or fabric softener, since they will deteriorate the fabric’s water resistant quality. Avoid drying your clothing at a high heat, since this will ruin the membrane. With the obscure 80’s overalls our dads wore to embarrass us not more than a distant memory we set out on a mission to create the ultimate deep powder gear.After several years of secretly testing and improving the prototype in the far-off

outback we realized that we succeeded beyond any expectation.
