I’m gonna tell you all a story about what goes on in leaves

Page 3: To the tune of the “Beverly Hillbillies” theme.

It’s good for all the plants and it’s great for you and me!

All they need is water, CO2 and

lots of sun,

Then they make their own food and they give us oxygen!

The xylem and the phloem are the vessels for the plant,

Page 8: To the tune of the “Beverly Hillbillies” theme.

They act just like blood vessels in your uncle or your aunt.

The xylem carries good stuff from the roots up to the leaves,

The phloem flows the other way and dead phloem makes tree bark!

Sorry about that, nothing rhymed with “leaves…”

“here come the roots…”

The roots soak up the nutrients and water in the ground

Page 13: To the tune of the “Beverly Hillbillies” theme.

They keep the plant well-anchored when the rain is pouring down,

Page 14: To the tune of the “Beverly Hillbillies” theme.

They store the extra sugars and the starches from the leaves,

Some roots are quite delicious,

But don’t try eating trees!

Hard to chew…..

…..lots of splinters

…y’all come back now!
