Matches at the Mackoy Stadium still come thick and fast at the moment and tonight we welcome

Gosport Borough in The League Challenge Cup. Last Saturday saw us progress in the Emirates

FA Cup against Bradford Town and the draw on Monday has pitted us at home to Weymouth a

week on Saturday in the 2nd Qualifying Round. We have been informed by Radio Solent that

they will be covering the match as part of their Non-League coverage this has come about due to

AFC Bournemouth playing Southampton the night before.

Saturday’s match was good to see the Boatmen get back to winning ways following the away

midweek defeat at Highworth Town. It was good to see Jack Nicholas get his first senior goal as

well. Before the game Dave Diaper was forced into more changes with Marvin McLean and Dean

Faithfull already not available Owen Royl pulled up in the warm up meant another reshuffle

ahead of kick off. Hopefully tonight’s squad will be back to full strength. We now have a busy ten

days at the Mackoy with matches for the first team reserves & u18’s in the FA Youth Cup. The

first team have home games tonight v Gosport Borough then Saturday v Cirencester Town then

Weymouth in the FA Cup. The reserves have home matches Thursday v Sway in JSMS cup then

next Tuesday home to Gosport Borough and then Thursday week v Christchurch. The U18’s who

beat Totton & Eling last week 8-1 in the FA Youth Cup now face Moneyfields at home next Mon-

day.

Off the field work is still in progress and Claire is working hard to get work completed in the

clubhouse. We have waited a long time for this to happen at the club and now the clubhouse is in

situ we all have to remain patient for the completion. Like everything regarding building works you

encounter hiccups. We are already indebted to the numerous volunteers that we have had help

out recently to get us to where we are today.

If there is anyone who wants to get involved in any type of sponsorship, alternatively if you are

able to volunteer any services that the club is in need of to complete the work at the ground

please Contact: Claire Paine on 07887 778266

Hope you enjoy tonight’s match and travel home safely.

Greg ~ Sholing FC Secretary

Alex Lafleur - Midfield Signed in July 18 from Conference South side Wealdstone, left sided player who started his career at Watford before joining Luton. While at Wealdstone enjoyed two loan spells with Harrow Borough and Chalfont ST Peter. Joseph Lea - Midfield Played at Southampton Academy from age 9-18, moved to Yeovil Town as a Professional. While there came to Gosport on loan. At the end of his Yeovil contract signed for Bognor Regis Town before signing for Gosport in early 2017. Pat Suraci- Attacker Pat was at Southampton Academy from age 9 to 15, he then signed for Aldershot for one year moving to Eastleigh in 2014. He signed a professional contract in Belgium for Lommel United. Pat joined Gosport in 2016 to play in the Conference South side. In 2017 he joined Bognor Regis Town going on loan to Weymouth before joining Gosport again. George Barker-Attacker Re-joined the Borough from Staines Town Dec 18. George played for the Borough in the 2015/16 season before moving to Havant & Waterlooville. George has played in the football league for Brighton & Hove Albion, Barnett, Newport County, Tranmere Rovers and Swindon Town. Sam Roberts- Central Defender Started his career at AFC Totton at 19, Playing for the reserves for just short of a year before making the first team. The following season Sam was involved more regularly with the first team making many appearances. A long term injury cut the centre backs next season short, upon his return of fitness he spent a couple of months with Hamble FC. The season of 18/19 Sam left AFC Totton to join Winchester city where he impressed in pre-season and fixed his place in the starting line. After 6 months he was approached by Gosport and agreed to sign halfway through the year and played an important part of Boroughs survival last season. Ryan Woodford – Central Defender Signed for Portsmouth fc at the age of 13 and played there until the age of 17 earning a first team squad number. Upon being released from Portsmouth he signed for Havant & Waterlooville making his debut in the conference south at the age of 17 spending 10 years of his career there, over 2 spells of playing over 200 competitive games for the club. Most recently winning 2 league titles & playing last season in the National League. In between spells at Havant he had a successful season at Borough and now under new management he was delighted to return. Matthew Partridge- Central Defender Last season Berkshire born Matt, played in the impressive Salisbury team that were challenging for promotion for most of the campaign. The central defender can make his presence felt in both penalty areas and managed to score 6 x goals last season for ‘The Whites’. Having started his career at Reading as a boy, he signed professional terms in 2012. Matt went on to play for football league two sides, Dagenham & Redbridge between 14/16 and later for Newport County, along with spells at Basingstoke & Hungerford. Charlie Kennedy – Central Midfield Last season’s Basingstoke captain has agreed to join the BORO’ revolution and play his football for the boys from Privett Park next season. Charlie is an inspirational and gifted player who has been on many clubs wanted list for some time, including Gosport’s .Basingstoke’s unfortunate last day of the season relegation, was a disappointment for Charlie and he has decided to come to the BORO’ and add his tremendous ability to the new team being put together by our management team. Charlie joined Basingstoke from Barnet back in 2016 and has been a massive player for the ‘Dragons’. Mike Carter – Central Midfield The former Hawks midfielder was understandably attracting interest from other teams looking to secure the experienced National League player, but the opportunity to come home to Privett Park, and be part of the BORO’ revolution was irresistible for ‘Carts’. Gosport fans were delighted when Carter came back to the BORO’ on a month’s loan in February to help his former club in their hour of need and was instrumental in three wins out of four games played before being recalled by Havant & Waterlooville. The midfield engine of the BORO’ team will run stronger with combative Carts in the thick of the action.

Page 14: To the Officials, Players & Supporters of - Sholing F.C.sholingfc.co.uk/downloads/programmes/SholingGosport11Sep19.pdf · To the Officials, Players & Supporters of Gosport Borough

Thoe Lewis – Central Midfield Theo who was born in Oxford, started his youth career with Chelsea & Reading before joining Cheltenham in 2007.Moving on to play for Salisbury between 2012 - 2014, before joining Woking and then Ebbsfleet United. In 2015 Theo agreed to join the Hawks and has been an integral part of the Havant & Waterlooville squad up until this summer. Theo’s National League experience will definitely bolster the BORO’s midfield next season. Liam Robinson – Striker last season’s ‘Watersiders’ striker/winger Liam Robinson, has agreed to join the BORO’ boys for the coming season. Liam enjoyed a fantastic campaign with Blackfield & Langley last season, who were promoted as worthy Champions of the Evo-Stik League South Division One South, having won the league by a convincing 7 point advantage over second placed Cirencester. New signing Liam was a stalwart of the Watersiders team with 30 x appearances and 9 x goals to his credit. Sam Argent – Striker Last season’s Basingstoke striker, Sam Argent has agreed to make the move to the BORO’ for the coming season. A prolific goal scorer for both Basingstoke and previous club Hartley Wintney, Callum Chugg- Central Defender Young central defender Callum Chugg (21), has made the move from AFC Totton to add his considerable presence to BORO's new defence .Fans favourite Callum has been at Totton since mid 2017 - joining from his former club AFC Fawley. A regular in the Stags first team over the last two years, chipping in with some spectacular goals, Callum is just the type of player to excite the BORO’ fans.

Josh Huggins- Defensive Midfield Josh is no stranger to Privett Park, after joining the BORO' for a short loan spell in March of last season. The ex Farnborough / Havant & Waterlooville player, who is equally comfortable playing as a defender or in midfield, is a great addition to manager Molly's new squad, and joins the boys for the start of their pre-season preparations from next week.

Ritchie Whittingham- Midfield Stared his career at AFC Bournemouth and has since played for Yeovil, AFC Wimbledon ,Eastleigh, Hayes & Yeading, Marlow, Whitehawk. Richie spent last season playing for Hungerford town but having also previously had a short spell at Gosport Richie returns under new Management for the up coming season

Matt Paterson- Striker It was back in 2014 that Matt joined Gosport from Aldershot Town and struck up an awesome goal scoring partnership with Justin Bennett. That 2014/15 season Matt scored 25 goals - was credited with 28 assists, and helped the BORO hotshot duo score a record breaking 58 goals WOW! Last seasons National League striker will add massive fire power to the already deadly Sam Argent. Rory Williams- Wing Back Rory played for the BORO' before going on to eventually play at National League level last season for the Hawks, where he was club captain. The signing is a major coup for Gosport's new management team, with the ultra professional set up and way of working a big factor in Rory's decision to join us.

Boro's league record (since 2000) is: 2000-01: Wessex League - 8th 2001-02: Wessex League - 4th 2002-03: Wessex League - 2nd 2003-04: Wessex League - 3rd 2004-05: Wessex League - 4th 2005-06: Wessex League Division One - 5th 2006-07: Wessex League Premier Division - 1st (promoted) 2007-08: Southern League Division One South & West - 11th 2008-09: Southern League Division One South & West - 12th 2009-10: Southern League Division One South & West - 8th 2010-11: Southern League Division One South & West - 13th 2001-12: Southern League Division One South & West - 3rd (promoted via play-offs) 2012-13: Southern League Premier Division - 5th (promoted via play-offs) 2013-14: Football Conference South - 12th 2014-15: Football Conference South - 6th 2015-16: National League South - 9th 2016-17: National League South - 20th (relegated) 2017-18: Southern League Premier Division - 23rd.

Gosport Borough ~ A Short History Gosport Borough Athletic Club as the club were originally known, were formed just two weeks after D-Day (6th June

1944).

Despite winning the Hampshire League at their first attempt in 1945/46, dropping “Athletic” in the 1960s, and over the

decades being a major force in County football, silverware was rare at Privett Park and the Championship was not

realised again until back-to-back titles in 1976/77 and 1977/78.

The two Hampshire League titles led to a successful application to join Southern League for 1978/79 and a period of 14

seasons in the (then) upper echelons of the non- league game began.

After four seasons at the top end of the Southern League’s Southern Division, promotion was won to the Premier

Division for 1982/83-at the time an equivalent level to the later Conference South.

Boro spent seven seasons in the Premier Division before relegation in season 1989/90.

Despite surviving the following season, Gosport finished bottom in 1991/92 and were relegated back to county football

(Wessex League).

The club competed for a couple of seasons and did lift the Wessex League Cup in 1993 but with the Club struggling for

money and minimal crowds, Chairman Ian Hay set up a trustee scheme which kept the club alive through their darkest

days, helping to support the club with fans providing regular income.

At the start of the century, things started to turn for the better at The Boro.

Reserve team manager Mick Marsh was put in charge of the 1st XI and with the Club emerging from their financial

difficulties, a return to the Southern League was back on the agenda. Marsh chased the dream for five seasons,

finishing in the top four on four occasions before he retired in 2005.

Under manager Alex Pike, Boro won the Wessex League title on goal difference in Pike's first season (2006/07).

With the club back in the Southern League in 2007/08, it wasn't until season 2011/12 that success came when Boro

achieved third spot and a play-off place, winning the Play-Off Final after a Steve Claridge strike sent the game to extra

time. Two goals without reply in the additional 30 minutes saw Boro promoted back to the Southern League Premier

Division.

In season 2012/13, Pike’s men enjoyed FA Cup success as a precursor to an unbeaten run of 23 games which lifted

Boro into a play-off place.

Boro saw off second placed Stourbridge in the semi, before beating Hemel Hempstead Town 2-0 in the final only to

concede two late goals before winning promotion on penalties.

So the board’s planned rise from county football to Conference South was complete and Gosport started 2013/14 again

looking to establish themselves at a new level.

Like the season before, Boro struggled to find their feet at the new level and after flirting with the relegation zone for

much of the season, it took another cup run to gain the belief needed to lift the team clear of danger.

An FA Trophy run which started in November, ended with The Boro playing beneath the Wembley Arch in a final

against Cambridge United in front of over 18,000. The result saw United run out 4-0 winners, but the belief that flowed

through the squad as a result of the Trophy run put Gosport back on track and lifted them into a comfortable mid-table

league place.

The club were able to plough the financial windfall from the FA Trophy run back into the infrastructure at Privett Park.

During the summer of 2014, a number of improvements were made including the installation of a new hospitality suite/

club office building and a state-of-the-art pitch irrigation system.

A solid start to the 2014/15 league season saw Boro well placed in the league. The confidence gained from the league

campaign helped the club finally make the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time.

Boro hosted Colchester United of League One in a tie that attracted over 2,000. Gosport acquitted themselves well in a

memorable match, but ultimately lost to the Football League side 6-3.

Boro were well placed for a play-off place until a little wobble in March saw them drop just too far off the pace-

eventually finishing sixth. But the club did have the consolation of lifting the Hampshire Senior Cup for the first time

since 1988 and seeing Justin Bennett pick up the award for the Conference South's leading goal-scorer.

The 2015-16 season got off to a good start, with the club pushing into play-off contention from the off. But as the New

Year came, the club were hit with financial problems.

But the campaign did at least end on a high with a 2-1 win against AFC Portchester in the Russell Coates Cup Final,

with talismanic striker Justin Bennett recording his 262nd and 263rd goals for Gosport.

In 2016-17 Boro were relegated and former Portsmouth FC Chairman Iain McInnes took control of the club with Ray

Stainton (formerly Chief Executive at Pompey) joining Boro as Chief Executive Officer.

Lee Molyneax was appointed as first team Manager on 10th May 2019, assisted by Ben Kneller & Kevin Braybrook.

Sholing Football Club History

The Boatmen have a long but fragmented history, running teams from the Woolston Works as early as 1884, when they

are recorded as being refused permission by the Hants & Dorset FA to introduce fresh players as substitutes at half-time.

In March 1887 they were finalists in the first Portsmouth Challenge Cup, beaten 1-0 by Portsmouth Association Club. The

Club were only beaten twice in 16 games that year (goal tally 72-6) and won the last Hants & Dorset Challenge Cup

before these Associations split.

Woolston Works won the first ever Hampshire Senior Cup Final in 1888, beating Winchester 2-0. There was some

controversy that year concerning Woolstons professional attitude, which was infamously referred to as "Kesson's Boots'.

Andover were beaten in an earlier round by Woolston, in which a Glasgow - based player called J. Kesson played a

prominent part.

Andover protested that Kesson should be disqualified on the grounds of residency - although he had played for Woolston

Works earlier that season, he had since moved back to Glasgow. Woolstons appeal rested on the fact that Kesson had

left a number of clothing items at his lodgings in Woolston, and this should be interpreted as his intention to return. The

Hampshire FA upheld the appeal and allowed Kesson to play.

Re-forming after World War 1 as Thornycrofts (Woolston), they turned professional and were admitted into the Hampshire

County League from 1920/21 to 1925/26. In 1920/21 Thornycrofts reached the FA Cup First Round proper, meeting first

Division Burnley at Fratton Park, and held them to a 0-0 draw, before losing 5-0 in the replay. Burnley were in the middle

of a 30 game unbeaten run and went on to win the first Division Championship.

Thornycrofts Woolston re-formed in 1947 but were only able to keep going until 1952. The Club were re-formed as

Vosper Thornycroft FC in 1960 and joined the Southampton Junior League. After several successful years, Vospers were

promoted to the Hampshire League Division 3 in 1991. The following season they were promoted to Division 2. 1997/98

saw Vospers as Hampshire Division 2 Runners-up and also Hampshire Intermediate Cup Winners.

In 2001/02 Vospers won the Southampton Senior Cup.

2002/03 Vospers were re-named as VT FC (after the parent company), and saw the Club as Runners-up in the

Southampton Senior Cup.

2003/4 saw VT as Hampshire Premier League Champions, Southampton Senior Cup Winners and promotion to the

Sydenhams Wessex League Division 1.

2005/06 VT Reserves won the Southampton Senior Cup at St Mary's Stadium which gave the club their 3rd victory in 5

years.

2006/07 was a great season for the club. The first team finished in third place and the reserves finished runners-up in

Combination 1 and they also won the Southampton Senior Cup again. The Club's 4th victory in 6 years.

2007/2008 The 1st team were Runners-up to Totton in the Premier League and the Reserves won 3 out of 4 trophies.

They are the Sydenhams (Wessex) Combination 1 League Champions, the Southampton Senior Cup Champions (for the

third consecutive year) and the Sydenhams (Wessex) Combination Cup Champions. They missed out on the Hampshire

Intermediate Cup by losing to Nursling in the semi-final which was the ONLY defeat they suffered all season. An

achievement to be proud of.

2008/09 was equally a very successful season with the first team again Runners-up in the Wessex Premier, this time to

Poole Town. They were Wessex League Cup Winners with a close 2-1 victory over Hamworthy United. Runners-up in the

Hampshire Senior Cup with a narrow 1-0 defeat against Fleet Town. Reserves again won Wessex Combination 1 and the

U18 Youth team made a clean sweep winning four trophies i.e The League, The League Cup, The Hampshire FA Youth

Cup and the Echo Floodlit Cup....what a great season.

2009/10 In our very first season in the Zamaretto Southern League we finished a creditable 4th (play-off position) in the

South & West Division and finished Runners-up in the Red Insure League Cup after going so close and finally losing on

penalties to Cambridge City. The Reserves regained the Southampton Senior Cup at St Mary's defeating Team Solent

2-0....the sixth time in the last ten years the Club has won it.

The Club changed their name in July 2010 to Sholing FC after the parent company VT Group were no longer in

existence.

2010/11 In only their second season in the Southern League South & West, the 1st team reached an incredible 2nd

place, only 2 points behind AFC Totton. Also Hampshire Senior Cup Finalists at St Marys losing 3-1 to AFC Totton. The

Reserves gained an incredible Double by winning the Wessex Combination League and League Cup in its Final year.

2011/12 For the third season on the trot we once again reached the playoffs only to fall at the first hurdle by a 1-0 away

defeat by Gosport. The reserves copied last year's achievement by winning the League and League Cup in the newly

formed Wyvern League.

2012/13 Despite being bottom of the league just before Christmas, the first team went on an incredible run in the second

half of the season and finished 7th in the Southern League South & West. The Reserves once again won the Wyvern

League, this time going unbeaten the whole season.

The club made the difficult decision to voluntarily drop out of the Southern League South & West (step 4) and into the

Wessex League Premier (step 5). With the focus of the club turning to developing the Silverlake Arena, we didn't want

Page 17: To the Officials, Players & Supporters of - Sholing F.C.sholingfc.co.uk/downloads/programmes/SholingGosport11Sep19.pdf · To the Officials, Players & Supporters of Gosport Borough

to financially extend ourselves and sink into debt.

2013/14 Back in the Wessex League Premier Division saw the club playing lots of old local rivals and the first team got

off to a storming start to the season and it wasn't to be until February when we were first defeated. However, due to

terrible weather & cup commitments, the club barely played in January & February, meaning a huge backlog of fixtures

in the final weeks of the season. Despite having to play 20 games in 30 days, including NINE successive away games,

Sholing won the League with 104 points and a goal difference of +105.

The Reserves made it a hat-trick of Wyvern League titles in the most thrilling way, scoring a goal in injury time in the last

game of the season, to deny Portchester the title. They also won the Southampton Senior Cup at St Mary's.

Of course, the FA Vase win will be what most people will remember from this season, the greatest honour in the club's

history. Back in October as we faced Winchester in the 1st round, no one was dreaming of Wembley, but as the rounds

were ticked off, we started to get the feeling that this would be our year. So on the 10th May 2014 at the home of

football, Wembley Stadium, backed by over 3,000 fans, Marvin Mclean scored the only goal and Byron Mason & Dave

Diaper lifted the Vase. In a whirlwind of activity that followed, the team paraded the FA Vase in front of the

Southampton FC fans at St Mary's, were given an official reception by the Mayor of Southampton and appeared on both

local TV stations.

After 15 years in charge of the first team, Dave Diaper handed over the reins to Dave Fear & Mick Marsh, in order to

concentrate on the Ground redevelopment (for which the club has kindly received backing and grants from Sport

England & the FA to build a new clubhouse and 3G pitch). We also said a fond goodbye to players Marc Diaper,

Tyronne Bowers & Lee Bright, who all decided to "retire at the top" after Wembley.

2014/15 Club was granted promotion back into the Southern League South & West division. After 21 matches in charge

Mick Marsh & Dave Fear stepped down from their managerial role leaving Chairman Dave Diaper to step back into the

fray alongside Stuart Hussey. Sholing finished in 17th position having been in that position for 32 weeks. Sholing

reached the semi-final Russell-Cotes cup and the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup losing out 3-0 to Gosport Borough

at Fratton Park. Ground grading issues saw Sholing relegated back to the Wessex League.

The Reserves much like the 1st team had a change of management part way through the season with Martin Tongs

stepping up from U18’s to take charge. The Wyvern title eluded them this season losing out to AFC Portchester and had

to settle for runners up and the two cup competitions saw them runners up again to Petersfield Town in the League Cup

but were successful in the John Stimpson Memorial Shield beating AFC Totton.

2015/16 Following a ground grading issue Sholing returned back to the Sydenhams Wessex League. Sholing welcomed

Darren Burdle into the coaching staff. A remarkable season for Sholing as ten players from within the under 18 ranks

made their first team appearances something that has never happened before. Cup disappointments meant the season

was all about the League and Sholing finished the season Runners Up to Salisbury losing one home League game

which was our first game against Moneyfields the only team to do the League double over us. Dan Mason was pipped

by former Sholing striker Sam Wilson on the final day of the season to deny Dan being the League’s leading scorer.

2016/17: Behind the scenes saw another change in management within the Development side with Iain Calder Steve

Ross & Steve Blackburn taking over the reins. Finishing 4th in the League and reaching S/F of JSMS & ¼ Final of SDFA

Sen Cup. Sholing FC were rocked in Dec 16 with the sudden death of Coach Darren Burdle aged 50. Sholing FC

finished season 3rd

with Dan Mason again being the leading marksman. Sholing completed a cup double winning the

Sydenhams Wessex League Cup then 52 hrs later lifted the SDFA Senior Cup for the 9th time at St Mary’s.

2017/18: The season like last season saw changes in management with Development manager Iain Calder stepping up

to 1st team coach. Steve Blackburn & Curtis Osbourne along with Steve Ross took on the Development role and took

the U18’s to the 1st Round of the FA Youth Cup. Steve & Curtis left the club midseason with Patrick McGonigle and

Steve Terry doubling up their roles with U18’S and Development with Steve Ross. The 1st team finished third in the

Sydenhams Wessex League and failed to defend both trophies losing out in the semi-finals in both competitions. The

Development side finished mid-table with many U18’s stepping up to the Development side. The U18’s won the HCY

League Cup and a number of the U18’S featured in 1st team games.

2018/19: Sholing won the Sydenhams Wessex League title with 8 games remaining of the season & promotion back to

Bet Victor Southern League South a winning double was achieved beating Christchurch to win the Russell-Cotes Cup

for the 1st time in their history. The Reserves finished runners-up in The Wyvern Combination League Premier Division

with the U18’s losing out on penalties to Moneyfields in HCYL League Cup Final.

By Hugo Varley Last week while frantically working towards yet another print deadline, I came across a story which certainly made me smile. As they jubilantly travelled back from their FA Vase victory at Bacup Borough two weekends ago, the players and staff at Grimsby Borough found themselves in a scenario fit for a Hollywood thriller as their coach ended up perched on the edge of a 45 foot ravine! They had only just set off on the journey from The Borough’s West View home when their coach driver suddenly took a rather perilous wrong turn. “When it crashed we started singing ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning!’ to the driver,’” said Grimsby boss Daniel Barrett. “Then the bus tilted and we started to realise that things may be a bit more serious! ”We had stayed in the bar after the match for a little bit and were still very much at the beginning of the trip home.” Nevertheless the group was determined to make the best of the situation and set out in search of a pub. However, in deepest rural Lancashire, this proved more difficult than expected. Barrett continued: “We ended up walking about five miles! “We stopped off at a petrol station and bought some drinks. We had our portable speak-ers and were singing all the way, I don’t really know what the local residents were think-ing. “When we eventually found a pub the people running it were so helpful and said that we could stay there for the night. “It was a pretty surreal evening but we certainly made sure that we made the most of the situation. “Thankfully we are at home in the next round so there won’t be a repeat!” While this represents a rather funny tale which will certainly be remembered by those in-volved for a long time, I think it also demonstrates one of the best things about playing football at this level. In an age of over protected and out of touch professionals, this kind of story would never have happened in the higher divisions. A huge part of Non-League football is about enjoyment and about getting away from the rigours of another working week to play the game for the love of it with people that you get along with. Of course, everyone wants success and to move up the pyramid but Non-League football also has that lovely human element of regular people enjoying their weekends while also trying to fulfil their dreams in the game. It is for these quirky tales why people like myself have come to love Non-League football

and everything that it represents.
