To The Nines Quilt Pattern For Quilts of Valor Designed by Carole Carter From My Carolina Home blog "To the nines" is an English idiom meaning "to perfection" or "to the highest degree" or to dress "buoyantly and high class" (Wikipedia). The name reflects the two sizes of nine-patches used in the quilt design. For this pattern, I'll give you the requirements for the star block, and then the nine patch block, all in scraps. Tables at the end will give you cutting for three sizes of Quilts of Valor in two configurations. For each nine-patch star - Cut 9 scrappy red white and blue squares 2-1/2-inches Cut 4 scrappy red white and blue 4-inch squares Cut 4 background white 4-inch squares Cut 4 background white 3-1/2-inch squares Begin by making a nine patch with the 9 scrappy 2- 1/2-inch squares. Pair up the scrappy 4-inch squares with the white 4- inch squares. Draw sewing lines on the white, 1/4-inch from the diagonal center. Chain sew on the lines. Cut apart on the diagonal between the sewing lines. Press to the darker side. Sew two HSTs together to form star points.

"To the nines" is an English idiommeaning "to perfection" or "to thehighest degree" or to dress"buoyantly and high class"(Wikipedia). The name reflects thetwo sizes of nine-patches used in thequilt design. For this pattern, I'llgive you the requirements for thestar block, and then the nine patchblock, all in scraps. Tables at theend will give you cutting for threesizes of Quilts of Valor in two configurations.

For each nine-patch star - Cut 9 scrappy red white and blue squares 2-1/2-inchesCut 4 scrappy red white and blue 4-inch squaresCut 4 background white 4-inch squaresCut 4 background white 3-1/2-inch squares

Begin by making a nine patch with the 9 scrappy 2-1/2-inch squares.

Pair up the scrappy 4-inch squares with the white 4-inch squares. Draw sewing lines onthe white, 1/4-inch from the diagonalcenter. Chain sew on the lines. Cutapart on the diagonal between thesewing lines. Press to the darker side.Sew two HSTs together to form starpoints.

Now you'll have one nine-patch unit, eight HSTs and four white 3-1/2-inch white squares. Arrange your units as shown and sew in rows. Block should measure 12-1/2-inches.

For each Nine-Patch alternate block -

Cut 9 scrappy red white and blue 4-1/2-inch squares. Sew into a nine-patch block. Block should measure 12-1/2-inches. Using some background squares will make the overall design less busy.

Arrange the blocks in a checkerboard pattern, add borders as desired. Quilt and bind as usual. Overall freehand quilting, or a curvy pantograph looks best on this design.

For reference, here are thenumbers of squares needed tobegin the quilt by size. Sincemost of our quilts are madefrom donated scraps, I'll givethe requirements that way.The pattern lends itself well toassembly line work, havingsomeone cut, while otherssew, and then others assembletops. It also works well tomake kits for the stars, andsew at home 9-patch blocks.

Putting some background squares in the largernine-patches will result in a design that is a bitless busy, but still interesting. To make thisconfiguration, use the chart below.

Swap the bottom two squares and background numbers to put five background squares per nine-patch, and you’ll see a chain form between the stars.
