known as the 'Maker of Modern India', Raja Ram Mohan Royfounded in 1814 Atimiya Sabha and Brahmo Samaj, one of the first Indian socio-religious reform movements. He played a major role in abolishing the role of Sati. Raja Ram Mohan Roy campaigned for rights for women, including the right for widows to remarry, and the right for women to hold property. He actively opposed Sati system and the
practice of polygamy.
In 1893, founded Widhawa-Dhondo Keshav KarveWiwahottejak Mandali, which, besides encouraging marriages of widows, also helped the needy children of widows. In 1895, the institution was renamed as Widhawa -Wiwaha Pratibandh-Niwarak Mandali (Society to Remove Obstacles to Marriages of Widows). In 1896, Karve established a Hindu Widows' Home Association and
started Mahilashram, a shelter and a school for women, including widows. He started Mahila Vidyalaya in 1907; the following year, he started Nishkam Karma Math (Social Service Society) to train workers for the Widows Home and the Mahila Vidyalaya.
OUR INSPIRERS
Pandit Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar was a man of action and at the same time an embodiment of the ideal of Prajna (intellect) and Karuna (kindness). He was also a great social reformer and was primarily responsible for the Widow Re-marriage Act-XV of 1856. The enactment of the Act of 1856, legalizing widow remarriage and the Civil Marriage Act of 1872, abolishing polygamy and child marriage
and encouraging widow remarriage, owed a great deal to Vidyasagar, whose writings and activities had helped to create public opinion in favour of these social issues.
Nadahalli Sripada Rao, founder and managing trustee of 'PARIVARTHANA' (Transformation), a trust promoting welfare of widows (www.parivarthana.in). Sripada Rao has written novels on widow marriages and to set an example has married himself a widow who had child in 1988. Parivarthana has conducted more than twenty successful widow marriages. The trust has produced a feature
Kannada film called “HOOMALE” based on widow marriage. The film directed by ace film maker Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar, music scored by maestro Dr Ilayaraja, title song sung by Padmabhushan Dr Rajakumar, story-screen play and main role enacted by Ramesh Aravind. The film bagged state, national and international awards. Rao is also supporting & serving Parihaar Foundation as Patron-in-Chief.

Parihaar Foundation, a non-profit organization registered under society's act promoting welfare of widows, strives to eradicate the woes of widows from society. Besides widows, we also focus our attention to eliminate the scourge faced by divorced women.
Our nation, although has witnessed great reforms in human rights still has a long way with respect to its treatment towards women, particularly widows. With every remedy, crops a new issue for widowed and divorced women. Even today, issues such as livelihood, self-respect, social discrimination, second marriage and sexual harassment loom large and remain unaddressed due to lack of support from society at large and even family on a personal level.
Widowhood is not a comfortable state of life in India – it is more a living death! Deprivation and starvation often plague many a widow. Indian society is dominated by religious superstitions and cultural practices wherein a widow is deemed as bad omen and forced to live a lonely and depressed life. Auspicious occasions are called off when a widow is found nearby. Remarriage, literacy and acceptance are very rare for widows. More often than not, a widow's health is affected due to malnutrition, poverty and lack of medical help. While widows in general face social, economic, emotional and health problems, widows in India experience all of these plus difficulties with the negative social attitudes they face and deprivations which restrict their scope of activities and their lifestyle.
Inspired by illustrious social reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Keshav Karve, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Founder-Managing trustee of Parivarthana Sri Nadahalli Sripada Rao, Parihaar has stepped into help widows and divorced women claim their rightful place in the society. Parihaar is founded on the principle of bringing succor to widowed and divorced women through social transformation, education and counselling. It is our aim to re-establish their dignity and self-respect. Through the many services Parihaar provides, we seek to create a holistic approach to widows social transformation and re integration into society. In keeping with the sweeping changes that are observed in other areas of social upliftment, it is our earnest endeavour to remove the crippling stigma that has brought the lives of these hapless women into a halt for no fault of their own.
Parihaar urges the nation to accept widowed and divorced women issues with equanimity and invites all like minded people to join hands with us as volunteers, social transformers, members, servant leaders, patrons, trustees and dignitaries of our governing body. We believe in transparent professional practices and adopt a collaborative approach with organizations and people with similar interests.
