SEMINARIAN DINNER AND MAGIC SHOW

FOR ALL CRHP SISTERS Our Monthly CRHP Renewal Meetings continue on March 4. There will be no meeting in April as the first Sunday is Easter and the second is Divine Mercy Sunday. Meetings with resume on Sunday, May 6. Watch the bulletin for dates beyond May.

Remember, we meet from 3 pm to 5 pm in the Parish Hall. The meetings are open to any woman who has attended a CRHP weekend whether or not you were part of a team.

The format will continue with Scripture, faith sharing, fellowship and a witness by one of our sisters. We suggest you bring a Bible, notebook or journal, name tag (if you have one), and a desire to grow spiritually.

Light refreshments are provided. Come out and renew old friendships and/or form new ones, and strengthen the bonds between the wonderful women of our St. Scholastica CRHP community.

Our theme is The Fruits of the Holy Spirit. However, we are working on a special presentation for the March meeting that ties together the Passover Ritual, Last Supper, Crucifixion and the Eucharist with the appropriate scripture readings. Hope to see you at a meeting.

On Saturday, March 10th, the Knights of Columbus will be hosting their annual Seminarian Dinner and Magic Show to raise funds for their “adopted” local seminarian, Reinaldo Jara, from the Tampa area who is also a member of their council. Wouldn’t it be a thrill to see Reinaldo, after his ordination, celebrating mass here at St. Scholastica knowing that we personally helped him along? Reinaldo may even be able to attend the dinner! Doors will open at 5 pm and dinner will consist of chicken cordon bleu, salad, fried rice, rolls, beverages and dessert. DJ Donna Carrier will be performing all evening and Paul Hallas will be doing his magic act at about 6:30 pm. They will have door prizes and will raffle off some nice baskets. The price for all of this is $15 per ticket.

PARISH BIBLE STUDY The parish Bible Study group continues the study of “Israel’s Story”. This is

an Old Testament overview in modern cultural terms, guiding us to what God means to us in our spirituality today. We will cover the Old Testament from the Kingdom of David through the Second Temple Period. What on earth does this mean? Come and find out!

We have started Part Two of our study and will finish before Holy Week. We meet Mondays in the Parish Hall, either 2:30-4:00 p.m. or 6:30-8:00 p.m. All are welcome, “no experience necessary”. For more information, call Sherri Turner, 352-746-2148 or Evelyn Jones, 352-419-7560.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

February 25, 2018 - 2nd Sunday of Lent

“’Here I am!’ he answered.” - Genesis 22:11

It is easy to say, “Here I am, Lord,” when we are kneeling in church. But how easy is it to say “Here I am, Lord,” when a neighbor needs our help, when we are invited to join a parish ministry, or when we are asked to provide financial support? Often times we are called when it’s not convenient for us. Discipleship is not always easy, most of the time it will make us uncomfortable and vulnerable.

THE OBEDIENCE OF ABRAHAM AND JESUS

St. Scholastica Church • www.stscholastica.org Page 8

God tested Abraham by asking not for an ordinary sacrifice, which would have been a partial burning with the meat divided between God and the people and eaten by those who sacrificed, but for a holocaust, a total burning of the sacrificial animal. This type of sacrifice consecrated the entire offering to God alone. This is what God was asking of Abraham in offering his only son, Isaac. When Abraham demonstrated his obedience, that was enough. This story from today’s scriptures foretells the completion of the blood sacrifices of the old covenant in the new covenant: the blood of God’s own Son, offered to us on the cross and in the Eucharist. Abraham’s obedience foreshadows the obedience of Jesus to God’s promise of salvation. The obedience of Abraham is rewarded in the birth to him, through Isaac, of many nations. The obedience of Jesus is rewarded in the salvation of all people for all time. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS The second Sunday of Lent every year recalls the Transfiguration of the Lord. Since the fourth century, Mount Tabor has been the focus of devotion to this event. As mountains go, it is not particularly lofty, rising about fifteen hundred feet, within view of the Sea of Galilee and very close to Nazareth. Scripture doesn’t identify the mountain, but in the year 348 Saint Cyril of Jerusalem said he preferred Mount Tabor to Mount Hermon as the site of the Transfiguration, and his opinion won. It has long been a strategic military site, and ancient fortresses are visible on the heights. Over the centuries, churches and fortified monasteries rose on the mountaintop, only to be destroyed by various invaders. Six hundred years ago, local Christians started to decorate the ruins with flags and banners on the Feast of the Transfiguration. In 1631, the Sultan granted permission to the

Franciscans to live on Mount Tabor, and they have been there ever since, discovering the ruins of an old Crusader church and constructing the present church on the site in 1924.

The top of the mountain is divided into Greek Orthodox and Latin (that’s us) zones. At one time, tourists arrived on the summit by bus, but this is no longer permitted. Some ride bicycles up a challenging and winding path, while others take the four thousand three hundred steps constructed for Christian pilgrims in the fourth century. It’s hard to imagine the fishermen following Jesus up this craggy mountain without complaint. Visitors will sympathize with Peter’s plan to construct booths and stay put with Jesus, Moses, and Elijah for a while, enjoying the view, and planning the trip back down. —Rev.
