4. DISCIPLES NEED DISCIPLINE:

• DISCIPLINE: Training that develops self-control, character, and efficiency or acceptance of or submission to authority and control.

• Treatment that corrects or punishes.

• Gr. sopheronismo means: Admonishing, or calling to soundness of mind or self control.

4. DISCIPLES NEED DISCIPLINE:

Romans 12:1-2 I appeal to you therefore, brethren, and beg of you in view of [all] the mercies of

God, to make a decisive dedication of all your bodies [presenting all your

members and faculties] as a living sacrifice, holy (devoted, consecrated) and well

pleasing to God, which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service and spiritual

worship. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

TIME TO GROW UP

VS.2 Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and

adapted to its external superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its

new ideals and its new attitudes], so you may prove [for yourselves] what is

acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and

acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].

TIME TO GROW UPMatthew 28:19-20

19 Go then and make disciples of all the nation baptizing them in the name

of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded

you, and behold, I am with you all the days, (perpetually, uniformly, and on every

occasion) to the [very] close and consummation of the age. Amen.

DISCIPLES NEED DISCIPLINE TO RECEIVE INSIGHT:

2 Peter 1:3-4 For His divine power has

bestowed upon us all things that [are requisite and suited] to life

and godliness, through the [personal] knowledge of Him Who

called us by and to His own glory and excellent (virtue).

DISCIPLES NEED DISCIPLINE TO RECEIVE INSIGHT:

4 By means of these He has bestowed on us His precious and exceedingly

great promises, so that through them you may escape [by flight] from the

moral decay (rottenness and corruption) that is in the world because of

covetousness (lust and greed) and become (partakers) participants of the

divine nature.

DISCIPLES NEED DISCIPLINE TO OBEY:

Matthew 28:20 The New Living Translation by Tyndale puts it this way:

“Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given

you…”

DISCIPLES NEED DISCIPLINE TO OBEY:

Matthew 28:20 The 20th Century New Testament declares:

“Teaching them to lay to heart all the commands that I have given

you…”

DISCIPLES NEED DISCIPLINE TO OBEY:

Matthew 28:20 The New Century Version says:

“Teach them to obey everything I have taught you, and I will be with you always, even until the end of

the age.”

DISCIPLES NEED DISCIPLINE TO OBEY:

John 15:7If you live in Me [abide virtually united to Me] and My Words remain in you and continue to live in your heart, ask whatever you will, and it shall

be done for you.

DISCIPLES ARE COMMANDED TO BE LIKE JESUS:

1 Peter 4:17 “Because as He is, so also are we in this world.” [If we obey the Word of

God]

DISCIPLES NEED TO KEEP HIS TEACHINGS AND ABIDE IN THEM:

DISCIPLES ARE COMMANDED TO BE LIKE JESUS:

John 14:23-24 (Amp)

23 Jesus answered, if person really loves Me, he will keep My Word

[obey My teachings]; and My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home (abode, special dwelling place) with him.

DISCIPLES ARE COMMANDED TO BE LIKE JESUS:

24 Anyone who does not [really] love Me does not observe and obey

My teachings. And the teachings which you hear and heed is not

mine, but [comes] from the father Who sent Me.

DISCIPLES ARE COMMANDED TO BE LIKE JESUS:

John 8:31 Jesus said to those who believed in Him If

you abide in My Word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you

are truly My disciples.

BELIEVERS NEED DISCIPLINE TO GROW UP:

Ephesians 4:12-15 (Amp)

12 His intention was the perfecting and the full equipping of the saints

(His consecrated people) [that they should do] the works of ministering toward building up of Christ’s body

(the Church)

BELIEVERS NEED DISCIPLINE TO GROW UP:

13 [That it might develop] until we all attain oneness in the faith and in the

comprehension of the [full and accurate] knowledge of the Son of God, that [we might arrive] at really mature manhood (the completeness of personality which is nothing less than the standard height of

Christ’s own perfection), the measure of the stature of the fullness of the Christ and the completeness found in Him.

BELIEVERS NEED DISCIPLINE TO GROW UP:

14 So then, we may no longer be children, tossed [like ships] to and fro

between chance gusts of teaching and wavering with every changing wind of doctrine, [the prey of] the cunning and

cleverness of unscrupulous men, [gamblers engaged] in every shifting form

of trickery in inventing errors to mislead.

BELIEVERS NEED DISCIPLINE TO GROW UP:

15 Rather, let our lives lovingly express truth [in all things speaking

truly, dealing truly, living truly]. Enfolded in love, let us grow up in

every way and in all things into Him Who is the Head, [even] Christ (the

Messiah, the Anointed One).
