Introducing advanced telecommunications systems to the central and western regions of China has the immediate effect of opening up the regions. Telephone systems are now expanding beyond the cities on the eastern seaboard. In particular, mobile phone networks, which are relatively cheap and easy to set up, are ‘leapfrogging’ the usual terrestrial systems. The process of introducing modern communications to hitherto undeveloped zones is a feature of economic change in China.
