On average, military families move once every three years. In my family’s case, we moved twelve
times before I graduated high school. In most respects, I count this as an amazing blessing and one of the
many advantages of being a military child. Growing up, I had the unique opportunity to live in foreign coun-
tries and travel all over the world. These experiences have given me a passion for travel and an appreciation
for different cultures and lifestyles. With these opportunities, my siblings and I also faced unique challenges
that are unparalleled in non-military families.
As a child, I attended seven different schools. We moved to San
Diego the year my older brother entered his senior year of high school. My
sister started middle school in a new city, and the year my younger brother
began high school, we moved three thousand miles away from his middle
school friends. Among the stressors of moving on such a frequent basis, military children com-
monly face differences in school rules, academic standards, and extracurricular activities.
These factors can create an environment that makes it difficult for military children to create
ties in their community to educators, administrators, and scholarship foundations that often
lead to advancements in higher education. The Wings Over America Scholarship Foundation
helps bridge that gap.
As a high school senior, my heart was set on going to Virginia Tech. It had everything I wanted out of college: the op-
portunity to attend a nationally renowned architecture program, a beautiful campus, and an undeniable school spirit recognizable
by even the most avid University of Virginia fans. My acceptance letter had already arrived in the mail, and the only challenge
that still lay before me and my dream of becoming a Hokie was the college tuition for which I would soon be partially responsi-
ble. As I looked into scholarship opportunities, I found the Wings Over America Scholarship Foundation. The scholarships I
received from WOASF allowed me to pursue my dreams of higher education without the burden of overbearing student loans.
Without support from Wings Over America, I may not have had the same opportunities during and after college that have al-
lowed me to focus on my education and career pursuits.

It has been a roller coaster ride for Wings Over Amer-ica. The trickle down from sequestration effected our corporate sponsors’ annual giving, so overall dona-tions were down this year. Fortunately, we had the most prolific year with our special events, adding in-augural golf tournaments in Hawaii and Jacksonville, and increasing our participation in the Patuxent River, San Diego and Virginia Beach tournaments. Your gen-erosity and participation in our events enabled us to award $103,500 in scholarships this year.
All this is great news for WOASF, but there is still work to be done. The average in-state college tuition is over $17,000 and $38,000 for private colleges. The new debt crisis in America is no longer home loans, but college debt. The average 2010 college graduate owes over $25,000 in loans, totaling over $1 trillion dollars for the nation. College students need our help more than ever; between the rising cost of higher edu-cation and the lack-luster job market students find when they graduate, scholarships matter!
We hope you will continue your commitment to WOASF and the scholarships we provide . As we strive to increase our award to $2500 this year (a 25% in-crease) we ask that you consider increasing your do-nation by 25% to meet the needs of our college stu-dents. Every dollar you give, makes a tremendous dif-ference to our scholars.
Receiving a Wings Over America scholarship is very important to me. With the rising cost of school, I am so grateful to the scholarship donors for helping me fund my education. It is an honor to receive this scholar-ship, and I am proud to represent a foundation that is so supportive of the military and its families. The Wings Over America Scholarship Foundation has supported me ever since I graduated from high school, and I am so thankful for that. I hope one day to be able to repay the favor by serving in our nation’s Navy. -Matthew Wagner, Harvard University - Four time WOASF recipient.

Volunteer of the Year—Carol Driscoll
WOASF is lucky to have so many wonderful volunteers. We have a great scholarship com-
mittee comprised of 10 volunteers, a great auction committee that helps spread the word about the event
and coordinate the baskets. But it takes an army of volunteers to help run our 5 golf tournaments that we
host throughout the country. Carol Driscoll, our “Volunteer of the Year” was an army of one when it
came to our Hawaii golf tournament.
It all started with a phone call in December when Carol said she would rather try to start a golf
tournament in Hawaii than an auction. She was completely enthusiastic and as an avid golfer, and past
WOASF golf volunteer she knew what she was getting into. In three weeks time, we had a course, the
beautiful Kaneohe Klipper, a registration form and an unstoppable volunteer.
In six weeks, Carol had spread the word to over 100 golfers, we sold out a week prior to the
event. She also was able to coordinate over 100 prizes for our golfers including Shark Tours, restaurants and the Grand Prize a 2 night
stay at the Grand Wailea in Kauai. Through Carol’s hard work and the generosity of the entire military community of Honolulu, we
were able to raise over $8500 from the tournament. For all of Carol’s hard work and her impact on the foundation, she is our Volunteer
of the Year. A 2013 scholarship was named in her honor.
“I am honored to be chosen as the Volunteer of the Year for WOASF. My love for golf and Naval aviation made it a pleasure
to help coordinate the first Golf Tournament in Hawaii. I am thrilled that our efforts in Hawaii spread the word of the scholarships avail-
able to dependents and that we were able to raise money to support WOASF. My husband has recently retired after 35 years of Naval
Aviation and volunteering for WOASF is my way of giving back to the community I have shared with him all those years. Thank you
for honoring me and thank you WOASF for supporting fellow dependents!” - Carol Driscoll
The receipt of this scholarship is an incredible honor, and I cannot thank the Wings Over America donors enough. I feel blessed to be entrusted with your confidence and support. This scholarship has helped make my college education an affordable dream, providing me with the freedom to concentrate on my engineering studies while continuing to pur-sue extra-curricular and community service opportunities. Without the extra burden of having to work to pay for my education, I plan to volunteer for summer engineering in-ternships at the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division, which I believe will help me pursue my career goal of working in the Aerospace industry. I am exceptionally proud to be a member of the Navy’s extended family. It’s a life lesson that has not only taught me the value of personal responsibility and hard work, but also that we take care of our own. Thank you Wings Over America for helping to take care of me.— Emma Holmes, University of Maryland- College Park, WOASF Renewable Scholarship & MPA Scholarship Winner
WOASF Virginia Beach Golf Tournament
Another successful golf tournament was held aboard NAS Oceana’s
Aeropines Golf Course. While the weather started out great, we fin-
ished in the rain with a 20 degree temperature drop. But that didn’t
dampen our 200 golfers’ spirits. Sponsors included Newport News
Shipbuilding, Pratt & Whitney, BAH, Lockheed Martin, UBS, First
Command, Navy Auto Source, GEICO, Boeing & Northrop Grum-
man. In addition to scores of door prize winners, team and individual
winners (for both Hornet & Tomcat) included:
Command Challenge – USS Harry S. Truman (6 teams)
1st Place: Team Hunter & Team Aros
Middle of the Pack: Team CSC & Truman Team 3
Dead Ass Last: Team Brant
Longest Drive (men’s) – Dave Cruz
Longest Drive (ladies’) – Kristin Kohart & Colleen Morgan
