This short episode, unique to Luke, has has had a chequered history. At first blush it is a benign and appealing story involving two sisters, the hospitality of their house, and the figure of Jesus. But there was a time when it was interpreted as establishing the superiority of the contemplative life (represented by Mary) over the active life (represented by Martha). Contemporary scholars, differ as to whether the story presents Mary as a champion of women because she is commended for assuming the hitherto male role of a rabbi’s disciple or whether Jesus’ rebuke to Martha only reinforces the traditional role of women as domestic servants. The fact there is no one agreed interpretation suggests that often enough the word of God does not offer clear answers to our questions or solutions to our problems. Instead the role of the word is to provoke us to thought about out customary patterns of feeling, thinking and acting so that we may make choices that are informed and wise. That said, this gospel may be understood in a common-sense way. Mary is praised for offering more fundamental hospitality than Martha— that of attentiveness to their guest and his wishes. Martha is rebuked for going overboard with the provision of excessive food instead of preparing something simple and thus being free to attend to the person of Jesus. OUR PARISH WILL CONDUCT THE CATHOLIC MISSION CHURCH APPEAL THIS WEEKEND (July 16/17)

We hear the plaintive cry of Martha in today’s Gospel and we can easily dismiss it as a case of ‘sour grapes’. But, then, haven’t we all felt like Martha at some point in our lives? We are resentful that someone else seems to be enjoying themselves while we slave away or we become bitter that our efforts do not receive the acknowledgement we feel they deserve. When we are asked to support an appeal for an overseas country such as Cambodia, and its people, we can have a variety of responses. None of them, however, are worthy of us as Christians if we do not focus on the “better part”, the bit that brings Jesus into our decision-making. This appeal is our chance to focus on evangelisation and Mission, just as Jesus saw Mary doing as she sat at His feet. Thank you, on behalf of the people of Cambodia, and the missionaries who serve them, for embracing your Mary and putting your Martha gently in her place. - David McGovern, Diocesan Director, Archdiocese of Brisbane.

*Appeal envelopes will be available on church pews and rotary stands (both churches).

OUR MISSION PRAYER

We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news. We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be. We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit

through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy. We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness, affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius.

2016 Centenary Toowong Jesuits—Portrait of a Jesuit

Fr Chris Jenkins sj Fr Chris Jenkins sj Fr Chris Jenkins sj Fr Chris Jenkins sj arrived in Toowong as Parish Priest on 1st January 2001 until July 2004 when he was withdrawn in order

to undertake his Tertianship.

A very pastoral man with a great care for the school.

Fr Chris was responsible for encouraging a team of three to

create quilted banners for both churches, to reflect liturgy

and spirituality and inject vitality and colour. It all started

with Christmas banners for St Ignatius (in 2002) and led to

many more for the liturgical seasons and Feast Days, priest

stoles and even work for other Jesuit parishes and Mercy

foundations in Australia and overseas.

During Fr Chris’ time as P.P. The Children’s Liturgy room

adjacent to Holy Spirit Church, Auchenflower was built,

being blessed on the Feast of Pentecost in 2003.

Fr Chris Jenkins sj (3rd from right) with John and Anne Forbes, Marelle Sartor and Sisters Jeanette Collis rsm and Joan Lynch rsm with the triptych banners

that currently hang from the choir loft at St Ignatius Church (these were inspired by Sr Jeanette).
