“TOGETHER WITH ELKS”
3
The first month of this new Elk year has come and gone. We hosted a couple of new events and fun was had by all! I appreciate your support for trying something new.
We have a few new events coming up in the next couple of months and I hope to see you there! Check your ElkHorn for details. We have some ambitious goals for this year. I’m very happy that you have stepped up to the plate and joined me and all the Officers in continuing to portray a positive feeling. We have seen it around the Lodge. Thanks to all.
One of the ways that the positive feelings have helped us, not only financially, but fraternally, has been the volunteer events that we have had. These not only helped our bottom line, it helped get people talking to each other and asking, “How are you doing?” I know every Elk really appreciates that. When we have volunteers helping out at the Lodge, it helps to remind us of the reasons that we do what we do -- to help others, and that we are Elks for a reason; a reason that is bigger than us individually. We need to remember that we all have the same goals in mind and joined this Lodge in order to accomplish those goals. The final result of that benefits our community and our charities. It also helps to make everyone aware that volunteers make Elkdom a better place. We have started that, you are remembering that ELKS CARE - ELKS SHARE! It’s not something that we are just saying to say, it’s something that we are doing here at Santa Ana Lodge 794.
We are the friendliest Lodge in the Orange Coast District! Don’t you forget it! We are going to succeed! We are going to do it together!
TOGETHER WITH ELKS!
Fraternally Yours,Marc Viana

FernandezI’d like to start by wishing all the Mothers a
very Happy Mother’s Day. Our Lodge is having an open meeting on May 14th with a program to honor Mothers, so I hope you will fit it into your busy schedules and attend. Our Mother’s Day Brunch on May 12th is always very good and it gives us a day off in the kitchen and a little pampering from our officers who will be serving champagne. I hope to see many of you there.
We have started a new Elk year and as it is with all new years, there is always the tradition of resolutions. Sometimes we make them and more times than not we make them and give them up not long afterwards. I’m hoping we will all make a resolution to support our Lodge more this year. Our lunches have gone to the full menu some of you have requested; we have Karaoke and DJ nights that some of you have requested, yet the numbers at these events still aren’t there. Those of us that attend are having a great time, and appreciate the suggestions! I hope you will drop by and enjoy them with us.
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the Leading Knight Gala Casino Night on June 8th. Bring family and friends for a casual night of gambling and fun. We have a light menu of sandwiches and boardwalk food to keep the price down so everyone can enjoy the evening. Please check out our ad in this ElkHorn. If you have anything we can use as prizes please let me know.
Part of supporting the Lodge is helping to keep it a place that everyone can enjoy attending.
We need to leave negative opinions at the door and not spread rumors or gossip. If there is something you don’t like, take your complaint to the proper person, and don’t burden someone that just came in for a drink or to have a good time with negative complaining. Let’s make this Lodge a happy place to meet old friends and make new ones and just have a good time.
Let’s make our Lodge all that it can be!!!God Bless our Elks, our Vets and our men and
women in harm’s way,Linda Fernandez

My Fellow Members – the month of May is very busy within the realm of Elkdom. Besides all of the regular Lodge events, the State Convention will be in Anaheim this year. I’m sure I will be seeing many of you there. As always, the District ritual contest will be held at our Lodge on the weekend of May 4th and 5th. There are many members that don’t feel that the ritual a new member has to go through is very im-portant; that it’s outdated and needs to be changed. I, for one, think it is one of the most important du-ties bestowed on an Officer. It is a privilege being involved in the initiation process of a new member. The whole reason for the ritual contest is for each Officer to learn a specific part of the process in order to impress upon the new member the importance of our Lodge. All Officers should take great pride in this work. So, on May 4th at 10:00 a.m., your new Officer Corps will be performing at the District con-test. Your support to the Officers is more import-ant than any high score earned. Unfortunately, this is only open to Elk members. Why not come and cheer us on!

Some of your Officers visited several other lodges recently on the occasion of the Installation of their incoming Officers for 2013-2014. I found the members of each lodge friendly, helpful, gra-cious, and eager to make you feel welcome and at home. It was wonderful to see that we members of Lodge #794 are on a par with those other lodges in regard to fellowship, facilities and camaraderie. If you haven’t paid another lodge a visit lately, I highly recommend that you do.
WANTED: Drug Awareness Program Chairman. Duties include spreading the Elks’ Drug Awareness message by visiting schools, hold-ing Drug Awareness essay contests, and distribut-ing Drug Awareness materials such as pamphlets, bookmarks, coloring books, stickers and Frisbees. The committee may also provide anti-drug aware-ness materials at community events as available. Reports of activities are required. Please contact me with your ideas and offer to assume these re-sponsibilities. This is a volunteer position. Bob Murrow (949) 400-3975 or [email protected].
WANTED: Male or Female. Must be committed, energetic, goal oriented and have an interest in Scouting. I am now recruiting for the position of Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts Committee Chairman. A background in Scouting is desired but not required. This Chairman acts as a liaison between the Scouting community, the Lodge, and the Elks’ District. The committee chairman would monitor the scouting units that our Lodge supports
and/or sponsors, and liaison with the Boy/Girl Scout Council. Activity reports are required to be submitted periodically. This is a volunteer position. However, the Committee Chairman selected would receive my undy-ing gratitude.

A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR
DEFINITION OF DEADLINE:1. A line drawn within or around a prison that a prisoner passes at the risk of being shot.2. The time after which copy is not accepted for a particular issue of a publication.
I have spent over 5 years producing the ElkHorn in past years. During that timethere have been many challenges and
most of those have to do with the deadline. It seems that some contributors think
that a deadline is something to be taken lightly and disregarded.
Each of us is very busy. I don’t deny that for any of my Brothers and Sisters; however,I do believe that everyone loves to get their
ElkHorn on time. The deadline is the deadline and I generously give you
5 extra days. You know in advance and it is your
responsibility to get your informationto me, not my responsibiility to beg you
Beginnning July 1, 2013, we willfollow in the footsteps of theGrand Lodge and send onlyone copy of the ElkHorn toa household. If you musthave more than one copy
please contact either BarbaraMills or Chris Young in the
Lodge Office.

When I was a little girl, my mother took me to a Woman's Club fashion show. It is one of my favorite childhood memories. I remember the large ballroom, the beautiful glass chandeliers that hung over my petite head, and women, dressed in their best "going to luncheon" attire, excited for the day’s festivities. We sat at big tables that were beautifully decorated and watched with delight as each model gracefully glided down the runway in perfectly fabulous clothes. It was a wonderful afternoon.
Forty-something years later, April 13th, 2013, I experienced Emblem's 30th Annual Fashion Show, "A Passion for Fashion." Again, I walked into a large ballroom with glass chandeliers that hung over my not-so petite, not-so little head. When I first walked in, I made my way to the bar where I ordered myself a "Jeanette," a drink named in honor of our current Emblem Club President; it was delicious. Next, I went shopping on the outside edges of the ballroom where venders of all kinds were selling jewelry, clothing, bags, and hats. After browsing the beautiful displays, I found my seat and made myself comfortable. Again, like my childhood memory, my fellow fashion show goers were dressed in their best "going to luncheon" attire waiting, with earnest anticipation, for the show to begin. Pat Repic headed the committee, presided as Master of Ceremonies, and proved to be talented at both endeavors. Behind the scenes, Lupe Navarro was busily applying make-up, while Andrea Weiss, from Royal Beauty Salon, styled our models' hair to make them runway ready. Everyone in the ballroom was in for an extra treat. Lynne Curtain, from the TV show "The Real Housewives of Orange County," graciously joined our Emblem models to showcase the stylish fashions of Stein Mart, Dress Barn, Eva's Trunk, Draper's and Damon's, Kiyanno, and David's Bridal. It was a great afternoon of good food and drink, inspiring conversation, and truly fabulous clothes. Emblem's "A Passion for Fashion" certainly held up to my childhood memory and I cannot wait for next year's festivities.

Jurupa Hills Golf Course was our destination on April 7th. What a great day it was. The golf course was much improved over past years and just as friendly with the following results:
Once again, because of the number of players, the women competed with the men in the “C” Flight by handicap readings.
The “A” Flight had handsome Rick Helms moving up a couple of notches to capture 1st place; hard hitting Larry Chastain was 2nd and retired door buster John Douthit was 3rd.
In the “B” Flight, Asif Merchant smiled his way to 1st. John Nye was overwhelmed by his 2nd place and Rich Caveli thought he was bowling for 3rd.
In the “C” Flight, Barbara Pliha forgot everything that Barclay Greene taught her and captured 1st. Larry Arason could not believe he was 2nd, but he didn’t argue. Nora Beagle came out of nowhere to take 3rd.
Closest to the pin were for the men – Mike Delgado and Marvin Hobbs, and for the women – Barbara Pliha and Gail Hanson. Longest Drives for the men – Larry Chastain and for the women – Nora Beagle.
Our next outing will be at beautiful Creste Verde Golf Course in Corona on Sunday, May 5th at 9:00 a.m. Call Rick Helms at (714) 368-4606 to sign up. Do it now before you forget!!

Good news on the Elk scholarship scene came from decisions made at the February meeting of the Elks National Foundation (ENF) Board of Trustees in San Antonio, Texas. Reports from this meeting show that in 2013-2014 the ENF will increase funding for the Most Valuable Student (MVS) scholarship program for the first time in six years.
The national (MVS) contest , open to any high school senior in the country, will feature 20 top awards -- 10 for males, 10 for females. Each award will be worth a minimum of $20,000. The top 20 finalists in the national competition will participate in a Leadership Weekend in Chicago, during which they will have interviews with the national judges. These twenty finalists will be competing for two first-place awards of $50,000; two second-place awards of $40,000; two third-place awards of $30,000; and two fourth-place awards of $20,000. The remaining 480 runners-up in the national competition will receive fifth-place scholarships of $4,000.
The total ENF scholarship distribution for 2013-2014 will be $3.74 million. That distribution funds the Most Valuable Student and the Legacy Scholarships. The Santa Ana Elks Scholarship Committee wishes to thank William Needham and family for their very generous donation to the Santa Ana #794 scholarship fund. The donation was made in gratitude for the Lenz Scholarship their granddaughter, Alicia Needham, received at our March 5 award night, and to honor Robert Coey, a lifetime member of our lodge and a great longtime friend of the Needham family. As the current school year draws to a close, the scholarship committee will be busy making arrangements to attend the high school award nights of our scholarship recipients. This is a wonderful way to let our local com-munity members know that Elks support the young people in our schools and is also another way of spreading information about the Elks scholarship programs.
If you have any questions regarding Elk scholarships, please call me at (949) 510-6971 or Jean Miller, scholarship co-chair, at (714) 998-9008. Marietta Parkinson Scholarship Chair

Fishing ClubAt our last Fishing Club meeting, we made a donation of $100 for the Major Projects ER March at the
State Convention in May and purchased an ad in the Emblem Fashion Show Program.Next month, the Fishing Club is sponsoring the Sunday Pancake Breakfast on June 23. We will have
the standard menu but, in addition, Wayne Pulcini will be singing and playing for your dining pleasure. And we will be selling Elk pins from all over the U.S. as well as local Lodges, Santa Ana ER, District and State pins.
We have selected the date of June 6 - 9 for the High Sierra trip. You need to make your reservations at the Vagabond Inn in Bishop. They have rooms with 2 beds for around $93 a night. Their phone number is (866) 356-6852. There are at least 6 anglers interested in the Columbia River trip in September. The guide’s daily rate is $200 per day per angler. He provides all fishing gear. You can stay at my son’s house, or if you prefer, a local motel. A firm date will be discussed at our meeting.
Our meeting for May will be on May 19, a Sunday from 4 to ?? at the Bieker’s home. The White Elephant Auction will take place. BELCH Club members will also be attending this event to increase the fun and excitement. Wayne Pulcini will provide entertainment for us and the bar provided by Tex, Dick and Merl. RSVP what appetizer you will bring to Merl or Carol Bieker at 714-547-3234. The cost will be $5 for each angler, wife or guest to cover the cost of entertainment.
May your rod always be bent.Merl Bieker, Chairman

During the last month we received donations from the following people and organizations within the Lodge: Bingo Players, Popcorn Contributions, Nomads, James Bartolomucci, Ron Grishaber, Helen Windell, Donald Fisher and Dan Fernandez.
As you know, our new ER, Marc, will be going to the state convention in May and he will be presenting a check for the contributions made by Santa Ana Lodge #794. If you have purple pigs at home, I encourage you to get them in as soon as possible so that we can include your contribution in this year’s total. This would also be the time for all Club Chairmen to make contributions in your Club name
. Thank you for your contributions to the kids! Norm Fisher Chairman

The Nomads have been BUSY!
April found them at Pechanga Casino in Temecula, where they enjoyed the camp-ground, and all that the casino had to offer. Hosted by the DeCapites, it was a memorable outing.
May promises to be even busier. Nomads will be traveling to Lone Pine on May 16-19, and to the Santa Maria Elks Rodeo May 30-June 2 (earlybirds May 29).
We’re doing lots of traveling…so why aren’t you joining us? IF YOUR RIG IS SPENDING MORE TIME IN STORAGE THAN ON THE ROAD, you need to join the Nomads.
Nomads meet the fourth Thursday of each month at the Lodge; 6:30 pm for dinner and 7:30 for the meeting.

Bequest & Living Trust“So, as we set out this year to defeat the di-
visive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed: ‘From my cold, dead hands!” - Charleston Heston.
Moses made this pronouncement at the Na-tional Rifle Association Convention in Charlotte, NC, way back in 2002. Even though he made this speech over 11 years ago, it still generates controver-sy today. See former comedian Jim Carrey’s recent satirical tribute and political commentator Greg Gut-feld’s response. Whatever your take on the gun control de-bate, the reality is that there are an estimated 300 million plus guns in circulation in the United States today. The NRA estimates that approximately 50 million households own at least one firearm. In Feb-ruary 2013 alone, the FBI reported over 2.4 million background checks for the purchase of firearms
From an estate planning perspective, this raises some serious issues. While a firearm is an asset that is a part of the estate just like any other asset, the transfer of certain firearms upon your passing could land your executor or the beneficiary of your estate in jail depending on the laws of the state where you die. This is why more and more people are creating “Gun Trusts”, a form of a revocable trust used to avoid pro-bate and keep your fiduciary and beneficiaries out of jail. Moreover, a certain type of Gun Trust, called an NFA Trust, is now being used specifically for the pur-chase and ownership of NFA Weapons such as ma-chine guns, short-barreled shotguns, short-barreled rifles, and silencers. A Gun Trust should not be used to purchase firearms that are otherwise illegal for you to own in your State of residence. However, if you have a fire-arms collection, you should consider a Gun Trust as a part of an integrated estate plan. Here’s why. Sup-pose you just have a simple will that leaves your gun collection to your children. Remember, depending on the size of the estate (over $150,000 in Califor-nia), the will would have to be probated in order to pass title to these items. As a part of the probate pro-ceedings, the executor has to file a probate invento-ry with the probate court where every single firearm must be listed. Furthermore, a probate file is a public record meaning that anyone off the street could go to the court, request to see a copy of the file, and would
soon find out exactly what your estate owns, including all of your firearms. Moreover, while you may want the collection to go the kids, if they are minors at the time of your passing, they cannot legally own them. See the problems? Doing nothing to plan for the order-ly passing of title of these items is not an option. I think that Gun Trusts are going to increase in popularity as more and more gun control legislation is passed because people by and large want their col-lection to stay in the family. Just look at the statistics. They do not want to give them up whether it be from their cold dead hands or otherwise. If you’d like to discus these issues or how in-corporating the Elks Lodge into your will or trust can work for you, please give us a call.Bob Lamm (949)852-1800Dan Romero (714) 547-8787
