Nortel TN-1X Installation Procedures

Safety considerationsEnsure that you are familiar with the general safety procedures relating to the TN-1X product detailed in ÔDocumentation Overview and Safety, NTP 323-1061-090Õ.

Follow all warning notices provided with this product, as well as the safety procedures established by your company.

Follow all caution notices provided with this product, as well as the general equipment safety procedures established by your company.

Mechanical handling considerations

WARNINGRisk of personal injuryDue to the weight of the subrack, the mounting of the subrack in the rack requires two installers for safe working.

Take care when working near the top of the Station Interface Area that your hands do not scrape on the honeycomb screen.

CAUTIONRisk of damage to EMC meshThe EMC mesh on the subrack must not be placed onto an uneven surface or be placed on any protruding objects.

CAUTIONRisk of damage to equipmentWhen inserting a plug-in unit, ensure that the plug-in unit is inserted in the black card-guides and not the grey front panel locator guide to the right of the required position.

Optical safety

Note: The subrack should not be powered until after the installation is completed.

CAUTIONStatic sensitive devicesThe plug-in units contain static sensitive devices. These devices are sensitive to static electricity and must be protected by special handling and packaging. Refer to the static sensitive handling procedures in ÔDocumentation Overview and Safety, NTP 323-1061-090Õ.

Before removing the TN-1X subrack from the inner carton of the packaging, personnel must wear conductive bonded wrist straps conforming to BS CECC 00015 Part 1. The straps must be connected to an available earth point in the absence of an ESD bonding point on the equipment.

WARNINGPower to the subrackThe subrack should not be powered-up until the installation procedures are completed and the subrack is ready for commissioning. If the parent rack is already powered, the relevant rack fuses must be removed before the power connector is connected to the subrack.

Optical connector/Þbre handling

Nortel TN-1X Installation Procedures

The following precautions must be taken when working with single-Þbre optical cables:

¥ Safety glasses must be worn when installing optical Þbres.

¥ Small bits of glass Þbre are almost invisible. After handling single Þbre cables, hands should always be wiped clean or washed before making any contact with the eyes.

Handle optical Þbres carefully and always position them in a safe and secure location during installation.

¥ Do not handle pieces of cut Þbre with bare Þngers. Use tweezers, or the sticky side of a piece of vinyl tape, to pick up and discard any loose Þbre ends.

¥ All Þbre cuttings should be placed in a plastic bottle provided for that purpose.

CAUTIONOptical connectorsClean all optical connectors by an approved method before making any optical connection.

When making an optical connection, do not rotate the optical connector unnecessarily.

When not connected, Þt all optical plugs and couplings with captive caps.

CAUTIONDamage to optical ÞbresWhen dressing Þbres, take care not to exceed the minimum bend radius (typically 35 mm) and do not overtighten tyraps used for dressing as damage may result.

When connecting connectors, ensure that the optical Þbres are not trapped by the protective cover on the unit before sliding the unit in position.

WARNINGDanger from glass chipsIf there is any suspicion of a glass chip in the eye, seek medical attention at once.

This chapter describes the procedures to be used when a Nortel TN-1X subrack is delivered to the customer as part of a supply-only contract.

Off-loadingThe consignment is the responsibility of the delivery vehicle driver until it has been off-loaded to the installation or storage area. Off-loading must therefore be supervised by the driver.

Only authorised lifting equipment and slings must be used unless a reciprocal agreement for use of the customerÕs equipment is in force and is valid.

Package handlingIdentify the top face of the container, identiÞable by packing labels, and keep the top face uppermost at all times.

The package contents are to be considered fragile at all times.

If packages are to be handled in wet weather conditions, adequate waterproof covering must be used to protect the package.

StorageIf the TN-1X equipment is to be stored before installation, the following storage conditions must be applied:

¥ Do not remove the equipment from its protective packaging.

¥ Store the equipment in an environment which is dry and controlled to prevent the formation of condensation.

¥ Whenever possible, store packages at a height which eases handling, i.e. between waist and shoulder height.

¥ Do not store the packages near sources of heat.

¥ Do not place heavy objects, e.g. wooden transit cases, on top of the package.

Tools requiredThe following tools are required to remove a TN-1X subrack from its primary and secondary packaging:

¥ Sharp pointed blade knife

¥ Conductive bonded wrist strap conforming to BS CECC 00015 Part 1

Packaging removalThe removal procedure is detailed in Figure 1-1.

Packaging disposalThe packaging may be disposed of as waste material. The customer may, however, Þnd it advantageous to retain the packaging which may then be used to return the equipment to Nortel should the need arise.

Checking contentsCheck the package contents against the Customer's Advice Note and ensure that the range of plug-in units Þtted to the supplied matches the TN-1X variant speciÞed on the order.

Figure 1-2 shows the layout of the plug-in units and interface modules of a typical equipped subrack.

Table 2-1 lists the special tools required to carry out the installation of the TN-1X subrack.

Table 2-2 to Table 2-5 list the range of the plug-in units and interface units available for Release 6 of the TN-1X. The units supplied will depend upon the customer speciÞc order.

Table 2-6 lists the installation kits and materials required. Table 2-7 lists the different 75 W trafÞc cord options.

Procedure 2-1 details the procedure for installing trafÞc cables into an NT ETSI rack, a 19" rack, or a BT Type 90 or 91 rack. The choice of cables will depend on customer requirements.

Installation of subrack into the rack

Nortel TN-1X Installation Procedures

Procedure 2-3 details the mounting of the TN-1X subrack into an NT ETSI rack, a 19" rack, or a BT 90/91 rack. The installation involves Þtting the subrack mounting brackets to the subrack and Þtting captive nuts to the parent rack. In the case of the ETSI rack, Þbre turning devices are also Þtted to the subrack and slide mounts may be used as a subrack mounting aid. For the BT racks, Þbre turning devices are Þtted, but slide mounts are not used.

The item numbers in Procedure 2-3 refer to Table 3-1 to Table 3-5 in Appendix A.

Under normal circumstances the subracks will be delivered with all units Þtted. The only units requiring removal and insertion by the installer are the optical plug-in units which need to be partially withdrawn to connect the optical cords (see Procedure 2-15).

WARNINGRisk of personal injuryWhen working near the top of the Station Interface Area (SIA), care should be taken to avoid scraping your hands on the honeycomb screen above.

CAUTIONRisk of damaging equipmentIf any plug-in units or interface modules require insertion/removal, it is imperative that the following procedure is adopted to avoid damaging the connectors or spring Þngers.

When inserting a plug-in unit, ensure it locates into the BLACK card guide and not the short grey front plate locator to the right of the required position.

Static sensitive devicesThe plug-in units contain static sensitive devices. These devices are sensitive to static electricity and must be protected by special handling and packaging. Refer to the static sensitive handling procedures in ÔDocumentation Overview and Safety, NTP 323-1061-090Õ.

1 Release the locking levers on the front of the unit by squeezing the ends of the levers. If required, a free-issue lever tool (code P0875600) can be used to release the levers individually.

2 Once the locking levers are released, simultaneously fully retract the top and bottom levers. This will safely disengage the unit from the backplane connector.

3 Slide the unit from the subrack.

4 Identify the correct slot position.

5 Ensure that both levers are in the fully open position and slide the unit into the card guide until the levers locate in the extrusion groove.

WARNINGRack fusesIf the parent rack is already powered, the relevant fuses must be removed before Procedure 2-7 is started. The fuses should not be replaced until installation procedures have been completed and the subrack is ready for commissioning.

1 Identify the two blue/black twisted pair power leads for the subrack position. These provide d.c. power for two separate Power Units. The leads are previously installed in the right hand side of the rack.KEEP THE TWO SUPPLIES SEPARATE AT ALL TIMES.

2 Locate the 4-way connector housing and the four Type 2A crimp pins (Appendix A, Table 3-8 Item 5 and Item 6).

The Flexible Access Module provides the connections for the Local Craft Access Panel (LCAP). No installation actions are required for the variant 25U JJ00 750 GWX as this is installed in the subrack with no external connections required. Variant 25U JJ00 750 HPD additionally provides interfaces for Þve earth free external alarm inputs which require connection as detailed in Procedure 2-9.

The Flexible Access Module is located in SIM position T1.

CAUTIONElectrical protectionAll external equipment connected to the External Alarms input must provide protection from mains voltages in accordance with the requirements of EN 41003 for the connection to Telecommunication Network Voltage (TNV) circuits.

1 Install the external alarms cable into the left hand side of the rack. The cable route used should follow the traffic cords installed in Procedure 2-1. The type of cable used is dependent on customer requirements.

2 The mating connector for the ÔEXTERNAL ALARMÕ front panel connector is a female 25-way D-type (Table 2-6 Item 8). Terminate the alarms cable with this connector in accordance with the pin out details given in Figure 2-14.

b. Run the cords down the designated fibre voids past thesubrack.

c. Open the fibre tray cover and feed the cords into thetray via the fibre turning device. Allow sufficient lengthfor terminating on the optical units.

d. Fit one fibre guide per cord to the tray and slide into thecorrect position.

e. Fit the cords into their fibre guide and go to Step 2.

OTHER RACK TYPESa. Run the cords down the designated fibre voids past the

subrack.

b. Open the fibre tray cover and feed the cords into thetray. As there are no fibre turning devices, extremecare should be taken not to exceed the minimumbending radius when routing the cords into the subrack.

Single Þbre working mode

When operating in the single Þbre optical mode, 2-1 optical converter boxes (couplers) are used to perform the conversion between two Þbre and single Þbre working. The 2-1 optical converter box (NTKD0100, Table 2-6 Item 9) can be Þtted in the Þbre tray as shown in Figure 2-22. Up to 4 converter boxes can be Þtted in a TN-1X subrack.

Local Craft Access Panel

The Local Craft Access Panel (LCAP) provides a 25-way D-type connector for the CAT local terminal and a BT style telephone socket for the EOW handset. These connectors are located behind a hinged cover on the left of the panel.

Neither of the above connectors are required to be connected during installation of the subrack.

A second 25-way D-type connector, on the rear of the LCAP, provides connection to the Flexible Access Module.

No installation actions are required.

A subrack cover kit (25S KM00 750 HFL) is supplied with each subrack variant (see Appendix A Table 3-6). If the equipment is mounted in an NT ETSI rack, subrack inÞll panels are required (part of 25S KM00 750 HFL kit).

If the equipment is mounted in an NT ETSI rack, ÔdummyÕ covers can be Þtted, if required, to improve aesthetics (see Appendix A Table 3-7).
