I ndian President, His Excellency, K. R.Narayanan and his wife, Usha Narayanan
made an official visit to Singapore on the secondweek of November 2000 at the invitation of ourPresident S. R. Nathan and First Lady. While in
Singapore, the distinguished guests met withvarious representatives of local Indianorganisations.
The Indian community here in conjunction withthe Indian High Commission in Singapore held agrand reception at the Shangri-La Hotel on Sunday12th November, 2000 in honour of the visitingdignitaries.

took an active part in the function and subsequentdiscussions.

The social function, which began
at 7pm. was well received. All
Singapore Tamils Associations
were able to meet and exchange views with the Minister and the Indian High
Commissioner of Singapore, Mr. P. P. Shukla.
The TRC Management Committee which represents 21 affiliate
organisations was well represented and obtained an in-depth knowledge of
the current directions in India.

A Seminar on “The Teaching andLearning of Tamil in the New
Millennium” with the theme of “Using ITin the Teaching and Learning of Tamil”was held at the National Institute ofEducation, Bukit Timah Road.
The one-day seminar from 7.45am to5.45pm on 4th November 2000 wasorganised by the Asian Languages andCulture Division of the National Instituteof Education, Nanyang TechnologicalUniversity.
The day’s programme started with awelcoming address by Associate
Professor Chan Chiu Ming, Head, AsianLanguage & Culture, NIE, NTU.
This was followed by an address fromthe Deans, Academic, NIE, NTU, andProfessor Koh Tai Ann.
Mr. Chan Soo Sen, Member ofParliament for East Coast GRC,Parliamentary Secretary to PrimeMinister’s Office and Ministry of Health,was the Guest-of-Honour.
Mr. Chan, in his address stated that inthe field of education, Singapore wasone of the most successful nations in theworld.
He said that Indian students were doingabove the National Average in Englishbut below the National Average in Maths.He also gave an idea for encouragingstudents’ writing skills and of starting amagazine especially for theparticipation of students.
Four volumes of the “Studies onTeaching and Learning of TamilLanguage in Singapore” - School BasedResearch Studies completed andpublished by 51 Participants of theAdvance Certificate in Education waslaunched by Mr. Chan Soo Sen. Theywere sponsored by four TamilOrganisations of Singapore.

The Ulu Pandan Indian Activities Executive Committee organised theDEEPA OLI-2000 on Saturday, 4th November, 2000 as its first
function of the new millennium of the new Community Club.
The festivities which began at 7.30pm. were held in the club’s newlyconstructed community premises.
During the course of the function, the Ulu Pandan Community Club’s IndianActivity Executive Community (IAEC) awarded two Community ServiceAwards to individuals for Outstanding Achievement and one CommunityService Award for an organisation of Outstanding Achievement.
The Awards were given away by the Minister Without Portfolio and Memberof Parliament for Bukit Timah GRC, Mr. Lim Boon Heng.
The winners of the two individual awards are former National SoccerPlayer and presently Jurong Football Team Coach, Mr. V. Sundaramoorthyand the President of the Tamils Representative Council, Dr. R.Theyvendran, PBM.
The Community Service Award for anorganisation was awarded to the Tamil daily,TAMIL MURASU - whichwas received by its ChiefEditor, Dr. Chitra Rajaram.
To promote Tamil amongthe Tamil-speakingcommunity a QuizProgramme wasconducted on behalf ofTRC by the Master ofCeremony, Mr. Sridaran.

Grand DeepavaliReceptionThe Hindu Endowment Board and the Hindu Advisory Committee jointly organised a
grand Deepvali Reception for all those volunteers who served for more than 40 years.Minister for Foreign Affairs and Law, Professor S. Jayakumar was the Guest-of-Honourfor the appreciation get-together at the Singapore Swimming Pool, Tanjong Rhu Road on
4th November 2000, at 3pm.
Some 28 Volunteers werehonoured and awarded recognitionfor their services to the Indian/HinduCommunity. Among them were SeniorVolunteers Mr. M. Thirunaalan (77 yearsold) and Mrs. Sarojini Menon (67 years old).They were given much respect by the community for theirmany years of devoted service.
All together some 350 volunteers, Indian community leaders,religious harmony members, teachers and templerepresentatives attended the function.
A senior Tamil poet, K.T.M.Iqbal’s selection of poems
called “Kanavukal Vendum” waslaunched on 29th of October, 2000at the PGP Thirumana Mandabamon behalf of the Association ofSingapore Tamil Writers (ASTW). Mr. Naa. Andiappan, Secretary ofASTW, welcomed the gathering ofwriters, publishers and communityrepresentatives for the event.
In his welcoming address here, hedefended the queries raised onthe status of Tamil Writers inSingapore at the “Tamil Ini-2000”conference in Madras.
The President of ASTW, Mr.Kavignareru Amallathasan asked asto why none of the Singapore massmedia reported the selection ofIqbal’s poem “Water” at the “EXPO-
2000” in Hanover, Germany.

DIALOGUE SESSION WITHFEEDBACK UNIT
Feedback unit of Ministry of CommunityDevelopment and Sports (MCDS) arranged aclosed door discussion on “Collective Leadership”which was a proposal raised at a seminarorganised recently by the Association of MuslimProfessionals (AMP). This discussion with otherorganisations was held on Tuesday 21 Nov 00.TRC was represented by its President, Dr R.Theyvendran PBM and Mr T. Jothenathan,Executive Secretary. A healthy exchange of ideasprevailed in this regard. This augurs well in ournation building efforts.
The Youth Group of SingaporeCeylon Tamils’ Association, one ofTRC’s affiliate organisations put up amusical extravaganza - “Pon MaalaiPozhuthu” on Saturday, 2ndDecember 2000.
More than 800 tickets were sold to agrand turnout. Held in the premises ofthe Sri Senpaga Vinayagar TempleWedding Hall, at 19 Ceylon Road, theentire collection from the show will gotowards the rebuilding of the temple.
More and more Tamil youths are nowtaking a greater interest in Languageand Cultural matters. During the show,a quiz was conducted in Tamil topromote the language.
The temple has also launched alovingly designed, bi-lingual card,titled “A Humble Appeal” to solicitfunds for its rebuilding project.
Tamil Reform Association’s Secretary,Thiru A. V. Krishnasamy has beenappointed as Chairman of the late G.Kandasamy Trust Fund Sub-Committeeby the Management Committee of TRC.
His initiative and interests would bevery useful for this noble deed andpurpose.
He has also been empowered toappoint like-minded members into hisCommittee to carry out his functioneffectively.

A gathering of friends, touched by the tragedy and devotees,attended the prayers and service on Sunday, 5th November, 2000from 7am to 12noon at the temple premises at 19, Ceylon Road,Singapore.
Parliamentary Secretaryto the Prime Minister’sOffice & Ministry ofHealth, Mr. Chan Soo Senjoined in the prayers andservice. Later, he extendedhis sympathies andexchanged greetings withmany of the devotees.

HOMAGE TO A VERSATILE WRITER
Well-known Tamil Poet ThiruN. Palanivelu passed away on11th November 2000. He was92 years old.
A man of diverse talents, hewas a Short Story Writer,Essayist, Lyricist, Playwright,
Drama Director and Radio Celebrity in Singapore.
With his profuse literary works, Thiru Palanivelupaved the way for Tamil Literature to slowlybloom and flourish in Singapore.
His total collections were recently released in TwoVolumes by his son, Mr. Balakrishnan.
He received the Cultural Award in 1987 from theSingapore Government. The same year, he wasawarded “KALARATNA” by the Singapore IndianFine Arts Society.
In 1997, the Association of Tamil Writers awardedhim “THAMIZHA VEL VIRUTHU.” He renderedhis services to the community through the TamilReforms Association jointly with Thamizhavel G.Sarangapani.
TRC joins all others in paying homage to a veteranTamil writer and thinker, Thiru N. Palanivelu.

Talk On, “Saiva Siddhanta” By H. H. Swamy SivananthiAdikalar at Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple
His Holiness Thiru Swananthi Adikalar, the founder Chairman of the London Meikandar Adheenam will be inSingapore in February 2001. He has consented to give a talk at our Temple on the Maha Sivaraathiri day on
Wednesday, 21st February 2001. His talk will be on, “Basics of Saiva Siddhanta”.
Adikalar is also the founder Chairman of the World Saiva Council (W.S.C.). The WSC has held conferences on“Saiva Siddhanta” in India. Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Canada and South Africa. Mauritius will be venue for theconference to be held in September 2001. Time of the talk will be notified later.

T RC, through its Education Assistance Programme has been involved in a National effort to improve theEducational performance of the Indian Children since 1982. To date more than 30,000 students have benefited
from this programme.
The Tuition Project for 2001, will commence on 28.1.2001 and will be conducted by Trained Teachers,Graduates/Tertiary Students and other volunteers, who have volunteered their services towards the success of theCommunity.
To assist these volunteers, Educational Materials, specially prepared by qualified Teachers will be supplied to them.Thus the tuition classes will ensure that your children are given the best possible coaching to do well academically inschool.
