The new improved energy effi cient Toyota
8FBN series forklift meets customer
demands for longer operating times between
charges, improved safety and environmental
performance, reduced operator fatigue, and
increased durability and water resistance.
There are fi ve new models, ranging from
1.5 to 3 tonne rated capacity at 500mm
load centres, with a choice of masts,
hydraulic controls and attachments, as well
as numerous optional accessories, a cold
storage pack for operating at minus 45
degrees Celsius and a corrosion-protection
pack.
TMHA’s National Product Manager for Toyota
electric forklifts, Jim Lobow, said the new
8FBN forklift range offered improved run
times, higher performance for increased
productivity, effi ciency and safety.
“The 8FBN forklift series has a new AC power
system, more effi cient motors and controllers,
an improved layout of equipment and an
all-new pedal-stroke detection regenerative
brake system,” he said.
“Pedal-stroke regenerative braking allows the
new Toyota 8FBN forklift models to improve
the effi ciency of energy recovery, thereby
increasing operating times.
“The regenerative-brake ratio during braking
is adjusted according to the percentage of the
brake pedal stroke.
“The bottom line from these improvements is
an approximate fi ve per cent improvement in
operating times over the highly regarded 7FB
series models
Mr Lobow said the new 8FBN forklift models
offered a range of attractive features for both
operator and management in addition to the
extended operating times.
“The biggest single advance over the
equivalent 7FB series could well be the
automatic turn-speed control, he said.
“The new system combines lift-height and
load-weight-sensing along with turn-speed
control automatically limiting the forklift’s
speed when turning – according to the state
of the vehicle.” At high lift heights, vehicle
speed, acceleration and deceleration are
limited according to load carried –
The combination of the newly designed
high-mount rear axle and the new turn speed
control helps the forklift achieve more stable
turns that match the operating conditions.
“Higher water resistance to IPX4 rating and
zero emissions including a design that is free
of hexavalent chrome means the new Toyota
8FBN Series will suit a wider range of end
users and even challenge some engine truck
applications.”
Key options of the new Toyota 8FBN forklift
range also include a height selector, joystick
controls, a shock sensor and the choice
of Roll In- Roll -out or Fork Pockets at the
bottom of the battery case for a side-out
battery that can be used for multi-shift
application.
Features pioneered on the 8-Series internal-
combustion machines have been adopted,
including lift-height control and sudden
acceleration from a standing
start prevention control.
The new 8FBN now has

features of the automatic Turn

features such as the active-

The NS4 presents a Toyota vision for future
mobility with a focus on connectivity and the
human interface.
Toyota engineers were challenged to design
a new mid-sized concept for potential global
market introduction by 2015.
The NS4 concept is a dedicated plug-in
hybrid, separate from the Prius family,
designed with future mobility requirements
in mind.
“In this digital age, cars are becoming
another spoke in the wheel of our electronic
connectivity,” said Jim Lentz, president and
chief operating offi cer of Toyota Motor Sales,
USA, Inc.
“NS4 demonstrates Toyota’s take on the
human connection to the car with technology
that considers both emotional and rational
relationships, person-to-car and car-to-society.
“The continued success of our conventional hybrid vehicles has laid strong groundwork for market acceptance of future advanced technologies.
“NS4 demonstrates Toyota’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the safety, effi ciency and convenience of future mobility for people everywhere.”
NS4’s advanced powertrain targets a next-generation Hybrid Synergy Drive plug-in system that is smaller and lighter with improved fuel economy, better acceleration and longer electric range, while maintaining a short charge time.
Sleek, futuristic styling
The NS4 concept signals a new styling direction for Toyota, aimed at creating an emotional connection with consumers.
Styling lines refl ect a new take on
aerodynamics with a low vehicle height and cabin-forward tilt.
The distinctive open trapezoid grille is accented by a fl oating lower spoiler and wing-like daytime running lights wrapping around to a sculpted fender.
Rear lamps wrap around the sides of the vehicle to quarter sections layered into blistered fenders, while the rear lamp wings create a sharp edge and the effect of a rear spoiler.
The A-pillars are ultra thin for improved driver visibility while maintaining roof-crush integrity. The roof-line profi le, liftback design and powered swan-wing doors create greater accessibility and effi cient functionality.
Increased connectivity
The NS4 concept has a Human-Machine Interface (HMI) that is built around a multi-
touch screen with the look and feel of a smartphone.
Simple and intuitive, it conveys information quickly with minimum distractions and maximum driver awareness. It will also direct air-conditioning, audio, battery-charge and navigation functions.
The HMI system is even capable of “learning” driver preferences and habits to anticipate driver responses in specifi c environments and situations.
State-of-the-art safety features
The NS4 introduces a next-generation Pre-Collision System (PCS) with lane departure, rear-end and pedestrian collision-avoidance technologies designed to predict collisions under certain circumstances and help avoid them.
Using millimetre-wave radar, stereo cameras
and near-infrared beams, it can help avoid collisions by applying the brakes and manipulating steering.
Adaptive Driving Beam headlights help prevent blinding glare to oncoming drivers and pedestrians at night.
NS4’s pop-up bonnet structure automatically raises the rear of the bonnet to increase the space underneath, helping to reduce pedestrian head injuries caused by a collision with the front of the vehicle, within certain speed ranges.
A Blind Spot Monitor detects a vehicle in the adjacent lane and visually alerts the driver with indicators in the upper dash.
NS4 introduces four new glass technologies to improve driver visibility and reduce fuel consumption:
• Hydrophobic coating - Fluorine-coated
glass causes rain drops to form into semi-
spherical shapes for improved visibility.
• Anti-fog fi lm - A high-performance resin
with anti-fogging characteristics and
increased durability.
• High ultraviolet (UV) absorbing inner-layer
- Removes 99 per cent of harmful UVA and
UVB rays.
• Anti-solar fi lm with radio-wave
transparency - Reduces the internal vehicle
temperature and improves electronic
device functionality
Inner and outer rear-view mirrors have been
replaced with cameras that provide the driver
with a wider view than conventional rear-view
mirrors.

The company has given a 2.5-tonne rated
capacity Toyota forklift truck to Mission
Australia’s Triple Care Farm at Robertson in the
New South Wales Southern Highlands.
The fully-reconditioned 7FG25 Toyota forklift
was handed over to TCF on December 15,
during the farm’s 57th graduation ceremony.
TMHA’s Sydney branch used equipment
manager, Glen Ryan, delivered the forklift,
which had been fully refurbished in the
company’s Moorebank (Sydney) workshop.
Accepting the Toyota forklift, the manager of
Triple Care Farm, Warren Holt, said Toyota’s
donation to Triple Care Farm (TCF) was all
about making a real difference in the lives of
young people in need.
“One of TCF’s main objectives is, while a young
person is with us, to lay the foundations for
future employment,” he said.
“Around 93 per cent of TCF participants are
unemployed when they come to us, so it’s as
important to get them on the road to a future job
as it is to tackle the other challenges they might
be facing.
“At the farm young people receive accredited
training in forklift operation which gives them an
operator’s licence and sets them up for a job in
a range of industries.
“It also delivers a huge boost to their morale
and self-esteem to know they have achieved
something positive and have a qualification
under their belts they can use in the future.
“We’re very grateful to Toyota Material Handling
Australia for the donation of the forklift. It’s been
a very valuable contribution in helping turn
young people’s lives around.”
Triple Care Farm is a residential program
for young people, aged 16-24, who are
experiencing problems with both substance
abuse and mental illness.
TMHA donates forklift to Triple Care FarmToyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has made a major donation to a leading residential program for troubled youth.
Australian Air Express asked Toyota Material Handling (TMH) to paint the 2.5-tonne capacity Toyota 2TD25 towing tractor pink, including a breast cancer logo.
The tractor’s daily duties include towing airline freight containers to the Brisbane Airport domestic and international terminals.
Australian Air Express Queensland airports manager Steve Brodby said thousands of airline customers have seen the breast cancer message every day, from the terminal lounges and while waiting for take-off.
“We at Australian Air Express all know someone who has been touched by this disease in one way or the other, so each year we’ve been doing our part to raise awareness,” he said.
“This year, we decided to lift our effort to the next level.”
The specially painted towing tractor was delivered to Australian Air Express’s Brisbane
Airport depot on 10 October - where the entire staff turned out in pink shirts for the occasion.
More than 12,000 Australian women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, according to the Cancer Council.
Tragically, more than 2500 lose their lives to the disease.
Pink Ribbon Day on Monday 24 October gave Australians the opportunity to show their support for the one in nine Australian women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85.
“A diagnosis of breast cancer can be a traumatic experience that can severely disrupt a woman’s family and working life. However, outcomes are improving,” said the CEO of Cancer Council Australia, Professor Ian Olver.
“By participating in events like Pink Ribbon day, the public can help Cancer Council provide support services to improve the quality of life
for those affected by breast cancer, along with
research into potential new treatments and
prevention measures.”
Breast cancer is the most common cancer
diagnosed in females in Australia and it is
estimated that almost 13,300 Australian women
will be diagnosed this year.
A lesser known fact is that approximately 100
Australian males will also be diagnosed with the
disease.
The Australian Air Express towing tractor is
TMH Qld’s second involvement with specially
painted machines for cancer awareness.
In 2008 TMH (QLD) painted two Toyota 8-FG20
forklift trucks (one pink and one blue) so
Pershouse Produce could spread the breast
cancer and prostate cancer message at the
Brisbane Produce Markets.

Jimmy Possum has been producing locally-made furniture for almost 20 years.
The business began in a backyard shed in Harcourt, central Victoria, with one employee. It now employs more than 150 people Australia-wide.
The new FD 500 series truck is the first Hino on the fleet for Jimmy Possum.
“Trucks are pivotal in transporting our furniture from our Bendigo factory to the eight outlets around the country in Bendigo, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane and Adelaide,” said Gordon Tivendale, Jimmy Possum general business manager.
“We transport all of our own furniture from Bendigo to our stores across five states. We chose to do this over contracting couriers to do the work.
“Our trucks do up to 4000km a week depending
on which state they visit, so reliability is crucial for the successful operation of our business,” he said.
“This is why we need a truck that can go the distance while also being efficient to run.”
The company prefers to keep its trucks for about six to seven years before replacing them.
“A couple of our other trucks on the fleet are getting a bit long in the tooth, so we’ll look at talking with the Hino dealer when the time comes - they’ve been very helpful thus far,” Mr Tivendale said.
“Our trucks aren’t forced to carry heavy loads but the extra grunt of the Hino certainly helps make light work of transporting our stock long distance.”
Robert Bulger, sales manager at Bendigo Truck Centre, said company owner Alan Spalding came into the dealership and asked for a quote
on a Hino.
“Jimmy Possum is a great Australian business,
so getting them into a Hino is excellent. We will
provide the customer service that this company
requires.
“They have been thinking about buying a prime
mover and a rigid vehicle - we’d love them all to
be Hino vehicles,” he said.
Jimmy Possum is the only manufacturer in the
country producing furniture from both new and
recycled timbers in classic and contemporary
designs.
Owners Margot and Alan Spalding, together
with their family (five of their seven children,
one son-in-law, an aunt and a cousin) are
all involved in the day-to-day running of the
business.
Official Australian Industrial Truck Association
(AITA) industry sales results for the 2011
calendar year show TMHA captured over 30
per cent of the total Australian forklift market.
TMHA sold in excess of 4,500 forklifts during
2011, 12 per cent more than its nearest
competitor and over 20 per cent more than
TMHA’s total 2010 sales.
TMHA accounted for one in every three internal
combustion forklifts sold in Australia, with a
market share of approximately 34%.
It has now led the Australian internal
combustion counter-balance forklift market
uninterrupted for 25 years.
On a state-by-state basis, TMHA was the
overall number one forklift supplier in Victoria,
Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania, and equal first in the largest market, New South Wales.
TMHA also led the combined three and four-wheel battery electric forklift segments in 2011, and increased its overall 2011 sales in all combined battery electric forklift segments by 19% compared to its 2010 sales result.
TMHA Executive Vice President & COO, Steve Takacs, said the 2011 results were an outstanding result for the company and its customers, especially with TMHA retaining the number-one position overall in forklifts.
“To be number one confirms Toyota’s trusted name in forklift trucks and the quality of TMHA’s range of counter-balance and warehouse equipment products,” he said.
“It’s all about the depth of the TMHA model
range, with the Toyota, BT and Raymond
brands, and the overall quality of the machines
in that range.
“Backing that up is our nationwide 100 per cent
factory-owned branch network and the effort
we devote to customer service and after-sales
product support.”
TMHA offers Australia’s most comprehensive
range of material handling equipment.
“The success of our products begins with our
parent company Toyota Industries Corporation
(TICO) as well as Toyota’s industry-leading
investment in research and development,
coupled with a dedicated commitment to
quality,” Mr Takacs said.
Hino part of the furniture Toyota’s quarter century of forklift successAustralia’s largest producer of furniture manufactured from recycled timbers has
taken delivery of its first Hino truck.Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has retained overall national forklift market leadership and achieved a quarter century of dominance in internal-combustion counter-balance forklifts.

Toyota raises the bar with new Optio order pickers
Toyota launches energy eff icient new 7000 series reach forklifts
Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) is set to launch a new range of BT order-picking forklifts that raise the bar for driveability and safety while helping to boost productivity.
The new BT “Optio” L-Series trucks, available in
1000 to 2700kg capacities, build on the success
of the superseded OPUS range.
Optio’s leading features include E-Man steering
concept; low step-in; BT Powerdrive system;
Sensi-platform lift including elevating controls
(P-models), and an integrated shrink fi lm holder.
“The E-Man concept’s electrical servo steering
makes steering easier at low speeds, provides
less stress on operators’ arms and keeps them
safely inside the truck’s profi le,” said TMHA
brand manager Dean Watson.
“Optional sideways adjustable steering boosts
ergonomics when driving in the fork direction or
walking alongside the truck.”
Safer entry and exit is made easier thanks to
Optio’s low step-in height, while a new design
backrest offers greater comfort and
suits all sizes of operator.
A host of storage compartments can
accommodate items and an integrated shrink fi lm
holder comes as standard.
“The optional E-bar allows the operator to fi t
a host of peripheral equipment such as code
scanners and laptops and carry them safely,” Mr
Watson added.
Optio offers improved drive performance thanks
to the Optimised Truck Performance program.
“Speed is reduced when the drive wheel angle
exceeds 25 degrees improving stability and
safety when cornering,” Mr Watson said.
Optional Frequency Adapted
Suspension smoothes
Optio’s ride
over harsh surfaces by dampening vibrations
from the platform’s fl oor.
P-models (OSE250P, OSE120P, OSE180XP)
also feature sensi-lift, which raises the entire
platform by 980mm for safe elevated picking
work.
With lift heights up to 4150mm and Sensi-lift the
OSE120CB model offers the added fl exibility of
stacking and order picking capabilities in one
package.
The walk through versions provide direct access
to the pallet to facilitate picking of bulky items at
variable heights.
Additional options for all models include
a folding seat for added comfort;
30kg-rated picking table; second-level
step-up kit, climber skids for easy
entry and exit of bottom-boarded
pallets, and electronically-
controlled automatic fork
height adjustment.
Raymond’s new stand-up 7500 and sit/stand 7700
forklifts, which supersede the 7400 and 7600 models,
introduce a host of new features headlined by
innovative new “Eco-Performance” benefi ts..
“Eco-Performance means performance without
compromise,” said TMHA brand manager Mr Dean
Watson.
“The new Raymond 7000 Series Reach forklifts
provide the latest in economic and ecologic
technologies, so your warehouse not only saves
power — it actually creates power, while lowering
costs and increasing productivity.”
“The 7000 Series regenerative braking saves energy
and reduces component wear. All high capacity 7000
Series models offer regenerative lowering technology
(optional on other models) that actually creates power,
as up to 10% of the amps are returned back to the
battery when the truck is lowering its load.”
“This means less battery changes and reduced
downtime.”
“Additionally, Raymond’s AC motors, unlike DC-
powered trucks, deliver the same level of performance
until the battery wears down with considerably less
maintenance requirements,” Mr Watson said.
Other highlights of the new 7000 Series include low
maintenance electric steering and braking, Raymond’s
exclusive steered idler wheel, single axis
control handle with a natural ‘shake
hands’ confi guration, and an open
view mast, which offers superior
visibility during operation.
The 7000 Series’ base legs, now
fabricated from composite ductile iron,
are mounted to the chassis via eight bolts
and two integral studs.
This allows them to absorb stress far better than
base legs with welded joints.
“Raymond’s innovative design features represent
a considerable step-up and the 7000 Series reach
forklifts would bring signifi cant benefi t to any
workplace,” Mr Watson said.
Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) is answering the demands of cost and environmentally-conscious operators with the release its new Raymond 7000 Series Reach forklifts..

Available in operating loads from 320kg – 900kg, you can be assured that there’s a Huski model guaranteed to put you at the head of the pack.
Giving our Aussie earth a shift in the right direction.
Able Hire commissioned the two machines at its
impressive facility in Kirrawee, Sydney.
The 320kg operating load 4SDK4 and 650kg
operating load models are the fi fth and sixth
Toyota Huskis Able Hire has owned in the last
decade.
Company Director Jeff Bell said the latest
machines continue the Toyota tradition of
producing tough, reliable and easy to operate
skid-steer loaders.
“We changed brands ten years ago, when our
skid-steer supplier changed franchises,” he said.
“We had a large Toyota machine to begin with and
that proved to be a great machine, better than the
previous brand.
“Then we added a smaller 320kg operating load
model and that was an even bigger improvement
over what we’d previously had on the fl eet.”
Jeff Bell said Able Hire will next year celebrate a
quarter of a century in the builders’ equipment and
truck hire business.
He co-owns the business with his brother Paul.
Jeff Bell said Able Hire operated three rental
outlets until three years ago, when it consolidated
into one brand new facility in
Kirrawee.
“We hire throughout Sydney
with a full range of builders’
equipment, cheery pickers, tip trucks and removal
trucks,” he said.
Toyota Material Handling offers a comprehensive
range of six Huski skid steer loaders nationally,
from the 4SDK4 to the 900kg operating load
5SDK11 - the largest model in Toyota’s 5SDK
skid steer loader range.

FJ Cruiser scoops 4x4 of the year award
Toyota’s FJ Cruiser capped off its first year on sale in Australia by winning 4x4 Australia magazine’s 4x4 of the Year title.
FJ Cruiser beat the Jeep Grand Cherokee
diesel, Range Rover Vogue TDV8 and
Mercedes-Benz G 350 BlueTEC to take the
top prize.
4x4 Australia editor Fraser Stronach said FJ
Cruiser had finished the competition strongly,
winning favour with the six experienced judges.
“Coming into the week-long 4x4 of the Year
test, the FJ Cruiser was very much the outsider
and a good deal behind,” Mr Stronach said.
“But as the testing unfolded and the kilometres
rolled by, the FJ proved itself to be the real
deal and not just a ‘look-at-me wannabe’.
“Don’t be fooled by the FJ Cruiser’s toy-car
styling as, underneath, lies the well-proven
and robust mechanicals of Toyota’s immensely
popular Prado.”
Toyota Australia executive vice president
David Buttner said the award recognised
Toyota’s concerted effort to bring exciting new
products to the Australian market place.
“FJ Cruiser underlines Toyota’s prowess in
four-wheel drive vehicle design backed by
popular retro styling,” Mr Buttner said.
“It is the latest vehicle in the Toyota range to
bring renewed energy to our brand alongside
the Rukus and the upcoming 86 sports car.”
4x4 Australia magazine will publish the 4x4 of
the Year feature in its February 2012 edition.

TMHA technical advisor/trainer Gerry Larney

“Toyota has always been at the forefront of
forklift technician training in this country - and
in fact pioneered specialist TAFE training for
Australia’s forklift technicians.
“We see the skills contest as having a direct
