What safety issues are involved for my fellowteam members and myself?

Safetyisoftheutmostimportancetoeveryonewhenyouareworking.Youmaybeworkingalongsiderailwaylines,theroadside,inbushland,inbuiltupareasoraroundyourownworkplace.

Regardlessofthelocation,yourfocusshouldbeonsafety.Agoodway

torememberwhoisaffectedbysafetyisthinkabout:

SpecificPPEwilldependonthetaskyouarerequiredtodo.Aspartofthepreparationforthejob,youshouldlookatwhatthejobentails.

Thebasisofworkingsafelyistoidentifyhazardsandassessrisksand

thenputcontrolsinplacefortheassessedriskssothattheriskisremovedorlessenedtoanacceptablelevel.Thisisthebasisof(safety)riskmanagement.

Riskmanagementinvolvesassessingconsequencesbeforecontrolsandputinplaceandthelikelihoodoftheeventoccurring.Forinstance,

theriskassociatedwithbeingkilledonthejobasaresultofavolcaniceruptionarealmostnilinAustraliaastherearenoactivevolcanoes.Ifyouwerecaughtinthissituation,yoursurvivalwouldbehighlyunlikely.So,theconsequenceisextremelyseriousbutthelikelihoodisVERYlow.Overall,theriskisassessedasLOW.

Ontheotherhand,theriskthatyouwillgetwetcrossingastreambysteppingonslipperymosscoveredrocksismuchhigher.Theconsequenceswillprobablybejustwetshoesorfeetbutthelikelihoodismuchhigher.TheriskisstillratedasLOWasitisprobablywarm

weatherandyouwillsuffernorealilleffectsfromtheexperience.

Liquidsshouldbecontainedusingbarrierssuchassandbags(forabsorption),plasticorotherwaterproofbarriers.Areascanbeprotectedwithplasticsheetingtopreventchemicalsolidsfromenteringthesoilandthereforewaterways.

Removalofnativetreesandvegetationissubjecttostrictcontrolsandcanincurpenalties,particularlyforsignificanttreesandtreesfromremnantvegetationareas(stillintheirnaturalstate).

Replantingoftrees,shrubsandgrassesthatarebothnativeandlocal(localprovenance)isencouragedtoprovidesuitableenvironmentstoprotectlocal,nativespecies.Insomeareas,birds,butterfliesandotheranimallifethathasnotbeensightedforsometime,haverecolonisedareasplantedinthisway.Thisalsoappliestosuburbanareassuchas

AltonainMelbournewherereplantingisassistingthesurvivaloftheAltonaSkipperButterfly.Thisspecieshasbecomevulnerable(indangerofbecomingendangered)duetodrainageofswamplandandremovalofitsfoodsource-alocalsedgeorgrassplant.

Localregulationsshouldbecheckedbeforeundertakingworksinareasofnaturalornativebushlandorgrasslands.

localconditions.

Animportantconsiderationinsiteplanningistothatroomisleftfortheactualworktobedoneinasafemanner.

Drainageshouldbeallowedfor.Forinstance,ifasurfaceistarred,thewaterrunningofftheroadwillbefargreaterthanasandysurfaceandmorethanasurfacecomposedofscreeningsorsmallstones.Thecamber(slope)oftheroadwillcausewatertorunoffbothsidesofthenewroad.Adrainmayhavetobeinstalledtotakethewaterinto

existingwatercoursessuchassmallstreams.Allowanceshouldbemadeforworst-caseconditionsveryheavyrainfallratherthandrizzleorlightrain.

everybreak).Theauditmightshowthatrubbishhasbeenlefttocollectorplacedinapositionthatitgetsinthewayofothertasksorjobs.Theactionwillbetocleartherubbishandtalktothoseresponsibletoensurethat,infuture,removalisdoneasrequiredorscheduled.

Continuousmonitoringinvolveskeepingyoureyesopenwhileyouareworking.Forinstance,whileyouarewalkingaroundthesite,youmayobserveafellowteammemberoperatinganoisypieceofequipmentwithouthearingprotection.Agentleremindercanbegiventoensurethathearingprotectionisalwaysworninthesesituations.
