The Hilmar High Yellowjackets are coming off a historic season in 2013, where the team went a perfect 10-0 dur-ing the regular season and swept through the Trans Valley League with their fero-cious defense leading the way allowing only 10.8 points per game. Unfortu-nately, the run ended in the Division IV Section title game at the hands of pow-erhouse Central Catholic in a 24-10 loss.

This year's Yellowjacket squad is almost a whole new team. The lone

returner from the 2013 merciless defense, Chris Souza, should provide some stabil-ity at the interior linebacker position. The roster is really thin on experience and things got worse after the announcement that last year's starter on offense, Jacob Smith, will also be missed after tear-ing is ACL during a summer accident. Although the offense returns last year's starting quarterback Jonathan O'Brien, his favorite target from a year ago is also gone in Tyler Robinson, so it will be

interesting to see if senior Hudson Har-ris steps up to the plate. Team chemistry will be key for coach Frank Marques this season as the Yellowjackets look to find their stars.

“Our kids are working hard and look-ing to take over, but can’t replace those kids from last year, so we will try to find a combination that works but we know it will be hard to replace,” said Marques. “Last year the kids were so talented, one of the best teams we have ever had.”

Q. How is this year’s team different from last year’s?A. “This year we lost a lot strength. We still have some strong guys on the team, but we’re a little bit smaller. I think we have some great speed, though. We’re a very competitive team. I really like this group, they’re competitive and gritty, and I’m really excited to see what they can do.”

Q. What are your individual goals? Team goals?A. “I really just want to try and win every game; that goes into individual goals as well. I want to win every single game and just take it play by play and see what we can do as an offense and as a defense and as a team.”

Q. If you had to compare your style of play to a superhero, who would it be and why?A. “Batman. I really like Batman. He’s not really like a superhero or anything, he’s more like a self-trained human being.”

Q. Last year you helped lead Hilmar to the section championship game. Do you feel added pressure to replicate that success this year?A. “Not at all, you know, not at all. We’re just going to take it game by game. If we happen to make it there again, that’s amazing, but I’m taking it game by game and hopefully we can get there.”

Q. What steps have you taken over the off season to improve and evolve your game?A. “I’ve done a lot of weight training with the team. Over the off season we have a great weight training program in Hilmar. I’ve been seeing a quarterback coach, Will Hewlett, in Livermore. I’ve been going there since January, so I’ve learned a lot about the position. I’ve gotten bigger, I’ve gotten stronger, and I’ve gotten a lot faster, too.”

Turlock Christian High’s football team wel-comes new head coach and athletic director in Jake Von Sherrer after recently making the move from Florida. Von Sherrer takes over a program that was winless a year ago and really has struggled to put up the numbers on the field, but he intends to stop the struggles and build a successful program from here on out.

The Eagles roster is made up primarily of under-classmen with 12 of the 18 players on the team being either freshmen or sophomores to make up one of the younger teams in the new Central California Athletic Alliance. One thing to expect from the Eagles this year is hard work with their quarterback Coleman Kirkendall leading the team under center. The running game should be big for the Eagles if they expect to see success Von Sherrer said. Also stopping the run on the defensive side will be the task that Von Sherrer’s team looks to concentrate on. One of the goals each day for the Eagles has been to go out and simply “get better” Von Sherrer added.

“We want to help kids individually to get bet-ter and play better and work hard and do the right things,” said Von Sherrer. “That gives you a chance to go out and win football games. That’s what it is. All we can do is practice and play better, these kids are working hard and playing hard ball.”

Q. What are the pros and cons of being the offensive

leader?

A. “A pro is that, obviously, we are the leaders so you have a lot

of character and the coach always sees you as the go-to guy and

so he comes to you before giving out information to the rest of

the players. And a con is probably the fact that we have so much

responsibility because sometimes if I mess up or if one person

messes up, really it’s you're following orders from the coach.”

Q. What are your individual and team goals?

A. “Just want to get better every single day and get better as the

season carries on. Personal goal by the time I graduate is to go

to the playoffs like we did in 2010.”

Q. This is your first year as the quarterback, what steps

have you taken to prepare yourself for the position?

A. “Well, last year I went into the mentoring of being the

quarterback. At the start of the season I was maybe going to be,

but we went only to one 7-on-7 and we brought in a guy who

had played quarterback before, which was fine. This year I think

we have done over 20 7-on-7s so I have had a lot of experience

throwing and passing, doing lots of drills and bringing the pieces

together. Last year was a 'get to know football', this year is a

'must perfect it.'”

Q. You have a new head coach this season, what has he

brought to the table in terms of team dynamics?

A. “Intensity. Lots of intensity. Lots of color and just… everything

is better.”

5 Questions For Coleman Kirkendall

Q. Is there a QB from either college or NFL that you look up to and why?A. “I kind of look up to Johnny Manziel. I know it seems cliché because he is the biggest talk right now, but I have always liked the way he played. He doesn’t just throw the ball, but he runs around and it’s really hard to catch him. I watched a lot of games and he is hard to stop. But also, Derek Carr from Fresno State, he is a stud.”

It’s a rebound year for Turlock High in 2014. After finishing at the bottom of the Central Cali-fornia Conference standings with a 1-4 record, the Bulldogs are welcoming a fresh start with a combination of newcomers and returners in terms of players and coaches.

Senior Bubba Moreno makes the switch from running back to quarterback this season and will stand behind a much improved offensive line. Ryan Murphy, Christian Standridge, Rob-ert Martinez, Mustafa Noel-Johnson, and Nick Berry will shore up the trenches for Moreno and the backfield tandem of Andy Jennings and Jereicho Taamu as well. With a new defensive coordinator on staff, Turlock’s defensive strat-egy will be a point of interest as the Bulldogs hope to use a fast and aggressive scheme to pen-etrate their opponents’ formations and lead them to success in the CCC.

“The biggest thing this year is that our line is a lot more experienced than last,” head coach James Peterson said. “It seems that the guys who came up the last few years have been with us at the varsity level for about three years and have shown good leadership on offense and defense.”

A. “The pros are, I got a lot of good guys to work with, a great

coaching staff to go along with it. Cons are, I have to make sure I

stay calm under pressure, make sure I keep my composure. Other

than that, it’s just go to work. Nothing else.”

Q. How is this year’s team different from last year’s?

A. “This senior group bonds a lot better because we’ve all

been together for three years straight now. We all have great

relationships with each other and we work well as a team.”

Q. What are your individual goals? Team goals?

A. “Honestly, I don’t really have any individual goals. Just team

goal: try and win CCC, try to win as many games as we can, and

go out with a bang our senior year.”

Q. What’s it like taking over an offense that’s had the

same QB for the last three years?

A. “Sean [Downs], he kind of helped me a lot last year during

practices, like when I went in he told me how to run it, what

to do. He helped me out, but I’ve known Sean since we were

younger. It’s nothing too hard, I think I can handle it.”

Q. If you had to compare your style of play to a

superhero, who would it be and why?

A. “Probably the Flash, because I love fast temp. Getting the

plays in and out; just run, run, run until the defense gets tired.”

With 20 starters from last year’s team gone to graduation, Pitman High enters the 2014 season as a team reborn. After finishing second in the Central California Conference standings and los-ing to Franklin High in the first round of playoffs last season, the Pride are aiming to return to championship form with the help of junior quar-terback Matt Carrigg—a standout baseball player who’s already verbally committed to UOP.

Carrigg brings with him a strong arm and solid footwork that should serve Pitman’s run-and-gun offensive strategy well. The supporting cast on offense will include Mikah Millentree, Josh Ver-celli, and Donovan Bravo at skill positions with seniors Jason Foglia and Michael Yotsuya occu-pying the line. These players, with the exception of Carrigg, will also lend a hand on the Pride’s defensive unit. Pitman will look to build chem-istry and promote consistency during pre-league play in preparation for its CCC home opener against Buhach Colony High—a game in which the Pride hopes to make a statement and set the tone for the rest of its league campaign.

“Well, I think we will be athletic and we will be able to do some good things,” head coach Tom Tyler said. “We should be fast on defense and will be able to run, and they will be in great shape and play their butts off.”

have their back and they have yours. No nervousness or cons at

all.”

Q. What are your individual and team goals?

A. “Try and win every game pretty much, and leave it all out on

the field.”

Q. You are already verbally committed to a collegiate

baseball career, how is preparation different for the two

sports?

A. “Football takes a lot more stretching, more soreness and more

icing, preparation is getting mentally ready with the stands and

all the people around with the fans and it's different.”

Q. You’ve been the starting QB at the freshman and JV

levels, how does being a varsity QB compare?

A. “It is different because it’s new. I never really played a varsity

game yet so it feels the same playing with majority of the

same guys I’ve been playing with up to this point, and so I’m

comfortable with it, including the fact that we have the same

coaching staff and I really like my coaches.”

Q. Pitman has had the upper hand in Harvest Bowl wins,

how important is it to you to continue the tradition of

winning?

A. “It’s really important. We will try and go 9-2 with it against

Turlock.”

5 Questions For Matt Carrigg


In the past, Delhi High struggled on the football field due to lack of experience and dedication among its roster, but it seems those issues have dissipated with the 2014 season fast approach-ing. The Hawks boast a large crop of three-year varsity starters with quarterback Garret Thomas leading the charge. Combine the experience of the players with a program that’s been reinvented to cultivate higher expectations for the team, and the result is a Hawks squad intent on claiming the Southern Athletic League Championship by season’s end.

In addition to Thomas under center, seniors like Sergio Hernandez, Jose Davalos, Rene Guerra, Hayden Steger, and Scorpio Martinez are expected to anchor both the offensive and defensive units for Delhi. Newcomer Jesse Flores, who wasn’t eligible to play at the varsity level as a freshman last year, is also expected to make a splash this season with the sophomore standout filling the nose guard and offensive guard positions.

Head coach Rod McCombs will look to lead his team to a SAL title with a multifaceted run game and what he calls a “motivated, gritty, and deter-mined” style of play.

“We don’t have, aside from Garrett Thomas, we don’t have any others that are Division I standout athletes. Just a bunch of guys that have come together and bonded and put faith and trust into the program,” McCombs said.

have a lot of experienced players, but just their mindset. At

the beginning of the season we gave them a goal and they’re

all working at it, they’re all going to practice now and they’re

looking a lot different mindset-wise.”

Q. What are your individual goals? Team goals?

A. “Individual goals, I guess just statistics like yard wise. But team

goal is definitely to win league this year. That’s definitely the

goal.”

Q. If you had to compare your style of play to a

superhero, who would it be and why?

A. “I’d say the Flash just because of his speed.”

Q. This is your third year as a starting varsity QB. How

have you grown from your first year to now?

A. “I’ve grown a lot. As a sophomore I was pretty quiet because

I was on varsity. Now, as a senior, I have a bigger leadership

role, just talking to the players and being vocal on the field.

I’ve gotten to be a smarter quarterback, too, just reading

the defense and all that. So leadership and athletic ability,

obviously.”

5 Questions For Garrett Thomas


When new Denair High head football coach Ted Howze took over a losing program that only accumulated four wins in the previous three sea-sons, he knew it would be a challenge — but not an impossible one.

After much hard work during the off season, the 21 man Coyote roster is looking like a legiti-mate team despite its lack of depth, says Howze. His focus was on the strength and conditioning aspect of the game and his team has already got-ten stronger, faster and healthier he said. With a two-headed monster at the quarterback position, Howze will look to Trenton Howze and Dominyc Silva to anchor and lead the team behind a stron-ger offensive line than the Coyotes have seen in recent history with the 6-foot-4, 300-pound right tackle Ryan Galhano.

The offense will be running a new style than seen in previous years, similar to what Colin Kaepernick ran at the University of Nevada-Reno. Noah Melrose has come to the Coyotes from Pit-man and is projected to start at right guard and also at interior linebacker. The defense is looking aggressive and ready to make things happen with a new ‘fun’ outlook on the upcoming season.

“We began from scratch and there’s been a lot of talking about letting the past be the past and everything we’re doing is brand new,” Howze said. “We have worked them harder than they have ever been worked before.”

A. “I love being the offensive leader because it lets me just be

in control of what goes on on the field, and that’s one of the

reasons why I started playing quarterback. And not many cons,

long as you’re in control and you know what you’re doing, that’s

it.”


A. “The focus is a lot better this year, everything is… just trying

to think of the word… discipline, and I think that’s going to be

one of the things that helps us improve from last year.”

Q. Your dad is also your head coach, what’s it like playing

for him?

A. “It’s tough. He has the highest set of goals for me. The

highest set of standards and he wants me to be head over

shoulders better than the rest of the players, so he works me

harder to become the best I can be.”

Q. How have you prepared for your first year of varsity

ball?

A. “I have hit the weight room. I have gotten stronger and

bigger, put on some weight, and just overall gotten over my

injuries and become a better player to hopefully lead the team.”

Q. Is there a QB either in college or in the NFL that you

look up to? And why?

A. “I love Peyton Manning because he is in control all the time

and he is smart with the ball and he is someone that every

quarterback should model after.”
