Balčiūnaitienė Short course description: The course provides students with the upper- intermediate (B2) level of English lexis, grammar, orthography, phonetics and phonology. Based on communicative and competency-based approaches, the course aims to teach students both oral and written academic English and develop autonomous learning and cross-cultural communicative skills. Students improve their phonological, orthographical, grammatical and lexical competencies and develop speaking, listening, writing and reading skills of the upper-intermediate level of academic English. The form of studies includes lectures, seminars, self-study tasks and work in SANAKO lab and in virtual MOODLE environment. Course content: Contents of language skills development: modal verbs and modal words (expressing past and continuous grammatical aspects); pronouns and determiners; definite, indefinite, and zero articles (general and summarising, listing and specifying, descriptive and limiting attributes); word building; subject, object and other types of relative clauses; punctuation; wish-sentences; passive voice; personal and impersonal forms of passive voice; non- conjugated verb forms (infinitive and gerund). Contents of study skills development: Improving listening, reading, note-taking and academic writing techniques; organisation of academic texts; planning, writing, paraphrasing, writing a bibliography; participating in academic discussions, providing academic opinion, analysing and presenting scientific information.
