Social ControlSchools act as agents of social control by teaching acceptance of rules and authority.

The problems with meritocracy

Do working class children have as much chance to succeed as middle-class children?

What is 'merit'? Effort? Attainment? Presentation? Originality?Different values are rewarded differently.

Meritocracy suggests that inequality is fair and just - encouraging elitism.
