Increased use of CCTVs for surveillance and traffic monitoring.

Location of the CCTVs is key in determining the amount and type

data collected i.e. images and videos

Problem statement

Closed Circuit Television cameras are increasingly being used in the prevention of crime and also recording criminal activities and surveillance in many public areas.

The acquisition and installation of CCTVs is very expensive hence it is critical to determine the most suitable place to locate and install them in order to enable maximum acquisition of information.

Conclusion

The objectives of the research were

accomplished.

Optimal locations for CCTV installation were

generated by the model.

The locations which are strategic for installing

CCTVs within Nairobi CBD was arrived at after

merging the optimal CCTV locations for crime,

traffic and car parks.

3D model improves geovisualization in

determining optimal location of CCTV cameras.

11 out of the 26 i.e. (42.31%) CCTV cameras

already installed were within 30 metres from the

generated optimal locations.

Recommendations

Use of GIS in determining optimal locations

for CCTV camera installations.

Vector and raster data to be used when

determining CCTV locations.

Data on existing CCTVs to be made

available.

Interface should be developed independent

of ArcGIS for incorporating data in the

model and executing it.
