What is a Puritan?A number of Protestant groups
that sought to purify the Church of England. They did not believe that the clergy or
government should act as a messenger to God.
Put in jail, whipped, their noses slit, and their ears

How were Puritans persecuted in
England?
They were being persecuted in England.
They were affair of losing their English Protestant
identities.
Why did the Puritans go to
Holland and why did they leave Holland?
What did the Puritans believe?-Most of humanity was damned for eternity, except for a few saved by the death of Jesus.-The Puritans were unsure whether they were “elect” or “unregenerate”-They were unsure if they were saved, so they looked for signs :
- you could feel the grace of good in emotional states
- you could see signs in your behavior and the world around you. - Puritans looked closely at the world and their lives for these signs… that is why they wrote so much
How did the Puritans govern themselves?
-They used contracts, like the contract (10 commandments) God
made with humanity. -- However it wasn’t a democracy because all people were expected
to be good Puritans…. No acceptance of other religions or
thoughts. -- the elect should have more say
than the damned
-It was the word of God… how
they should live their lives
-The Bible was the handbook by
which they lived their lives
-They looked at it for signs they
were “elect” by comparing it to
their lives
What role did the bible play in the lives of the
Puritans?
Why was Rowlandson
abducted along with her family?The Native
Americans were starving and needed
the ransom to buy food
Because her possessions are nothing compared to the home waiting for her
in heaven.

How do Bradstreet’s Puritan
beliefs give her strength to lose her
house?
She believes she is one of the saved and will go to heaven.
She believes all her experiences are a sign
of God’s love… the lose of her possessions
is a gift from God as a lesson to value
spiritual matters.
Rowlandson uses allusions to illustrate how her
suffering relates to the bible. She sees them as a
sign she is one of the saved.
How and why does Rowlandson use
allusions in her narrative? Give one example from the
text.
They were eating horrible food such as insects, horse ears,
and rotting meat.
How do we know Rowlandson’s captors were
desperate for food?
Only a few are saved. If his listener is not saved,
the only reason the listener hasn’t fallen into hell is God is holding him
up.
