equipment
General Safety Issues
• Tube tires• Underinflated tire• Tires driven while flat• Separated tire
General Safety Issues
• Barriers and Restraining Devices• Must be used• Inspection prior to daily use• Inspection after any separation of parts
General Safety Issues
• Barriers and Restraining Devices – continued• Cracks at welds• Cracked or broken components• Bent or sprung components • Pitting of components due to corrosion• Other structural damage that may
decrease its effectiveness• Repair and re-inspect
General Safety Issues
• Airline Assembly• Clip on chuck• An in-line valve
with a pressure gauge
• Sufficient length of hose
Procedures
De-Mounting Tires and Rims1. Single Piece Rims
2. Multi Piece Rims
Procedures – Demounting
1. Demounting Single Piece Rim• Jack vehicle and remove wheel• Remove the valve core• Fully deflate the tire• Run a wire through the valve stem• Dual wheels – inspect inside tire assembly
Procedures – Demounting
1. Demounting Single Piece Rim - continued• Do not remove de-mountable dual wheel until
pressure is released• Remove the wheel nuts and remove the wheel
assembly• Break bead according to manufacturer • De-mount the tire from the narrow ledge side • Never hammer on the rim
Procedures – Demounting
2. Demounting Multi Piece Rim• Jack vehicle to remove wheel• Remove the valve core• Fully deflate the tire• Run a wire through the valve stem• Dual wheels – inspect inside tire assembly• Deflate both tires if damage to inside wheel
Procedures – Demounting
2. Demounting Multi Piece Rim - continued• Ensure all components are cleaned• Ensure pressure is released• Remove wheel nuts and wheel assembly
Procedures – Demounting
2. Demounting Multi Piece Rim - continued
• Break bead• Never hammer on the rim or the lock ring• Disassemble the tire assembly
Procedures - Assembly
1. Component acceptability
2. Inspect single piece rim
3. Reassemble single-piece rim
4. Inspect multi piece rim
5. Reassemble multi-piece rim
Procedures - Assembly
1. Component Acceptability• Do not interchange components• Inspect prior to assembly• Tag damaged components and remove from area• Components to be clean• Check tire and wheel size and type
Procedures - Assembly
2. Inspection of Single Piece Wheel• Clean and examine wheel, valve stems
and tire carefully• Paint the rim with a metal primer where
necessary• Inspect the inside of the tire
Procedures - Assembly
3. Reassembly of Single Piece Rims• Replace stems or grommets• Lubricate tire beads and mating surfaces• Replace old O-Rings • Work tire beads one at a time over rim flange• Tire changing machine
Procedures - Assembly
3. Reassembly of Single Piece Rims - continued• Do not apply heat• Do not use flammable substances to seat
beads • Use restraining device when inflating• Do not inflate if flat, solid surface is in
trajectory• Stay out of trajectory when inflating
Procedures - Assembly
3. Reassembly of Single Piece Rims – continued• Remove bead expander• Clip-on air chuck• Stand outside the trajectory• Ensure wheels are lined up• Inspect the tire and rim• Do not rework damaged wheels
Procedures - Assembly
4. Inspection of Multi Piece Rims• Look for signs of cracking, wear, corrosion,
deformation, broken beads:• Sprung side/lock rings• Cracked rings/rims• Bent flanges• Tool marks• Loss of contour• Metal thickness of the mating surfaces
Procedures - Assembly
5. Reassemble Multi Piece Rims• Replace old O-Rings• Lubricate• Put the rim parts into place• Never “air-up” a wheel of which you are
unsure
Procedures - Assembly
5. Reassemble Multi Piece Rims - continued• Inflate to 10 psi and ensure that parts fit• Inflate to manufacturer’s specifications• Stay out of trajectory when inflating
Procedures - Assembly
5. Reassemble Multi Piece Rims - continued• Do not apply heat • Do not use flammable substances • Inflate to recommended pressure• Deflate completely• Re-inflate to the manufacturer’s
recommended pressure • Re-check before removing from restraining
device
Procedures - Mounting
• Mounting Disc Wheels• Check wheel studs for damage• Check tire diameters on dual wheels• Check tires for separations• Ensure mounting surfaces are clean
Procedures - Mounting
• Mounting Disc Wheels – continued• Use the proper cap nuts• Use proper tightening sequence and
torque levels• Use air wrenches only to spin on the nuts• Recheck and retighten cap nut at 80k to
160k
Procedures - Mounting
• Mounting Demountable Tire Assemblies• Check all studs, clamps, spacer bands• Check diameters of tires• Do not mix tire types on the same axle• Ensure mounting surfaces are clean and
smooth
Procedures - Mounting
• Mounting Demountable Tire Assemblies - continued• Place inflated tire assembly on wheel• Guard against misalignment• Install proper rim clamps and nuts• Use proper tightening sequence / torque
levels• Recheck / retighten clamp nuts after 80k to
160k
