* Japan is an archipelago that is just East of the continent of Asia (mainland).

* The Japanese call their country Nippon, which means land of the rising sun.

* Less than 20 percent of Japans land can be used for farming.

* Most people have settled on one of Japan's few flat plains or along the coastline.

* This is a region of volcanoes and earthquakes that circle the Pacific Ocean.

* The Japanese islands sit at the boundary between two plates, or sections, of Earth’s outer shell.

* They survived mainly by hunting and fishing.

* They developed a new farming technique, growing rice in irrigated fields.

*  Rice soon became Japan's most important crop.

Where did Buddhism come from originally and how do you think it got to Japan?

* Before the arrival of Buddhism the Japanese believed in the religion of Shinto.

* In 552 AD Buddhist priests from Korea brought Buddhism to Japan.

* Shinto means "the way of the gods."

* The Japanese believed that Shinto gods created Japan as a special group of islands.

Important things to remember:

* Settlements in Japan were limited to flat lands along the coast.

* Japan borrowed a writing system from China.

* Priests from Korea spread the religion of Buddhism to Japan.

* Shinto was the religion that originated in Japan and it means “way of the Gods.”
