Thank you for suppor5ng the HLSS disability community! Ø Consider cultural meaning of disability to the individual family. Ask how disabili5es are viewed in their ethnicity. Ø Communica5ng the diagnosis – posi5ve vs nega5ve: Families appreciate when diagnosis is delivered in a posi5ve way. IE at child’s birth, congratula5ons on your new baby. Delivering diagnosis later as well. The way the diagnosis is delivered and explained makes a huge impact on the HLSS families. Ø Reflec5on/understanding ques5ons to parents vs. yes/no ques5ons when providing a diagnosis or any type of evalua5ons– ask the family to summarize their understanding (interpreters can especially help with this!) Ø Open ended ques5ons – please don’t ask yes/no ques5ons. Many parents will say yes because that is what they think you want to hear, regardless of whether they really understood. Ø Learn about the services available to kids who aren’t born here! o May receive services through Early Interven5on (EI) and Community Centered Boards (CCB) up to 18 if they meet eligibility (Colorado – check your state.) o Stay in school un5l age 21 if they are on IEP. (IDEA) Ø Providing Resources – we know from research that during the first 6-12 months of diagnosis both parents are experiencing grieving in different ways. HLSS families will not ac5vate ini5ally to be proac5ve to contact resources provided. Instead of just providing the resources: o Warm handoff of referrals vs “here is the info – call”. § Get permission to make the referral to the community resources they need most – especially aaer ini5al diagnosis up to year. § Referrals to help for those families grieving. Ø Pleasedon’tusefamilymemberstodotheinterpreta5on.RememberthattherearedifferentSpanishlanguagedialectsandgrammarusagedependingonwherethefamilyisfrom.Trytoensurethatinterpreterisprovidinginterpreta5oninasgeneralandbasicSpanishforfamiliestounderstand.
