Pakistan – sacked shipbreaking workers

reinstated

25.05.2016 - Around 350 shipbreaking workers have been reinstated with wages after a two-day strike led by IndustriALL Pakistani affiliate NTUF. Workers are continuing to demand that the government and employers ensure basic facilities at the country's dangerous shipbreaking yards. About 360 shipbreaking workers were sacked on 16 May, in retaliation for filing police cases against employers regarding injury and deaths at shipbreaking yards in Pakistan.

The workers were employed through contractors to perform specific tasks, locally known as ‘agreed sector’ workers. Subsequent to two days strike, the shipbreaking owners association came to the negotiation table. Successful negotiation on 24th May led to reinstatement of all workers with wages for the days they were away from work. While the victory is a success, the perilous working conditions at shipbreaking yards demonstrate the enormous challenges workers face.

In the year 2015, …

demonstrations, press releases and strikes... In the protests 29 % female and 71 % male workers were involved. The main places were the towns of Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, Kocaeli and Bursa...

Labour Conditions In India Factories

New Delhi: Swedish fashion retailer Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) said it was collaborating with trade unions, government as well as the UN to improve workers' conditions after a study found violations in supplying garment factories in India and Cambodia. The study by the Asia Floor Wage Alliance (AFWA) found workers stitching clothes for H&M in factories in Delhi and Phnom Penh faced problems such as low wages, fixed-term contracts, forced overtime and loss of job if pregnant. The AFWA, a coalition of trade unions and labour rights groups, accused the Western high street retailer of failing on its commitments to clean up its supply chain. An official from H&M told the Thomson Reuters Foundation on Saturday that the fashion firm has been working actively to improve the lives of textile workers for many years. "The report raises important issues and we are dedicated to contribute to positive long-term development for the people working in the textile industry in our sourcing markets," said Therese Sundberg from H&M's press and communications department. "The issues addressed in the report are industry wide problems. They are often difficult to address as an individual company and we firmly believe that collaboration is key." H&M has partnered with the International Labour Organization, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency as well as global and local trade unions to seek out solutions, she added in an emailed statement. The fashion industry has come under increasing pressure to improve factory conditions and workers' rights, particularly after the collapse of the Rana Plaza complex in Bangladesh three years ago, when 1,136 garment workers were killed.

201 Cambodians workers from 12 factories from August to October 2015 found that overtime in all the factories was expected by employers. Cambodian workers reported they had to do two hours of overtime daily, while Indian workers reported working at least 9 hours to 17 hours a day. "Workers are routinely required to work until 2 a.m. in order to meet production targets - and then to report to work at 9 a.m.," it said, referring to workers in Indian factories.

"The financial imperative of working overtime due to the persistence of minimum wage standards below living wage standards can be viewed as a form of economic coercion that leads to involuntary or forced overtime," it added. The study also found that fixed-term contracts were being used in 9 of the 12 Cambodian and all Indian factories surveyed. These contracts facilitate arbitrary termination and deprive workers of job security, pension, healthcare, seniority benefits and gratuity, say activists. Workers also reported discrimination in maternity benefits in both the Indian and Cambodian factories, said the study. Cambodian workers from 11 of the 12 factories reported either witnessing or experiencing termination of employment during pregnancy, while Indians from all five factories said women were fired during their pregnancies, said the study. "Permanent workers report being forced to take leave without pay for the period of their pregnancy," it said. their jobs after pregnancy, they receive completely new contracts that cause them to lose seniority." H&M's Ms. Sundberg said solving all these issues was a long-term process which continues "step-by-step" and that the Swedish retailer was committed to improving labour rights in its supplying factories. "The continued presence of long-term, responsible buyers is vital to the future development of countries such as Cambodia and India, and we want to continue to contribute to increased improvements in these markets," said Ms. Sundberg. © Thomson Reuters May 2016 ************************** See the video at this link:

Building sectorial union work in Bahrain

According to the Labour Market Regulatory Authority in Bahrain, total employment in the country reached 725,113 workers at the end of 2015, of which 60 per cent (566,785) are migrant workers. Oil production and the aluminum industry constitute leading export products as key to the country’s national gross-domestic-product (GDP). The Aluminum Bahrain (Abla) Company owns one of the largest smelters in the world employing around 2,800 workers, including migrant workers. Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco) is the largest oil company in Bahrain with about 2,400 workers while Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard (ASRY) hires up to 2,000 workers.

The Bahraini union leaders representing workers in several companies said they faced a lack of cooperation from employers with GFBTU’s independent and democratic unions, as well as challenges on organizing workers in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are most prevalent in the country. Union leaders emphasized the importance of more integration in global union work and exchange, as well as the key priorities of developing unions’ sectorial work in the energy and metal sectors.

Despite active women participation at the IndustriALL meeting on 3 March, union leaders attributed the low participation of women in industrial sectors due to the nature of the industries as well as economic and social changes in Bahrain over the past decades. Union leaders prioritize enhancing woman and youth participation in union work and leadership positions. The participants were introduced to IndustriALL’s work progress at regional and global levels. Global Framework Agreements and operations of MNCs were also discussed particularly with regard to French-based Engie (formerly GDF SUEZ) operations in Bahrain. The struggle of Bahraini workers goes back several decades to before oil was discovered in

Oil unions in Kuwait…

The meeting resulted in the immediate development of a mechanism sponsored by the prime minister's office for discussing workers' demands. In addition, a tripartite committee composed of the cabinet, the state owned Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) and the OPIWC was formed.

Following the intervention by Kuwait's political leadership, as well as promises made for negotiations with unions on their demands and guarantees of no sanctions against the striking workers, the strike ended on 20 April. The committee met for the first time on 25 April, and the meeting resulted in:

• A referral of the workers' demands to a neutral legal committee by the Cabinet for its decision within two weeks • A freeze on oil workers' wage cuts until

the legal committee has completed its work • KPC taking the necessary legal steps to

count the strike days as working days for the workers • Handing in a study by the OPIWC on

the gradual reduction of costs and profit maximizing of oil sector without having a negative impact on workers' rights. • Examining the OPIWC's observations on

the negative implications of including the oil sector in the strategic alter-native draft. Over the past months, the government of Kuwait has developed a new draft law for public sector jobs called the Strategic Alternative to Salary Scale. The law includes measures to reduce government costs by harmonizing pay.

the country in 1932. In 1938 Bapco workers demanded: a workers' union; improved working conditions; that employers stop favoring foreigners; and job provision for Bahrainis. In 2004, this struggle culminated in the foundation of the GFBTU that organizes both Bahraini and migrant workers. IndustriALL 11.05.2016

Workers, Teachers, Unity, Unity

Defending Jafar Azimzadeh is more urgent than your supper!!!

The Islamic Republic of capitalism has imposed wages 3 to 4 times below their own official poverty line and when workers and teachers protest they are arrested under false charges of national security and then imprisoned and tortured without any trials and without allowing them to defend themselves. To protect the security of the thieves, the embezzlers and the corrupt system of bribery which is all part and parcel of this government, every large and small cog in the wheel of the Islamic Republic, from the Great Leader to the government, from members of parliament to the judiciary, from the fundamentalist to the reformers, from the Islamic committees and the Workers House to the agents of the intelligence services, they have all joined hand in hand in a united front in suppressing the workers, teachers, students and women who are constantly arrested and imprisoned under the phoney charges of "association and conspiracy against national security" and by illegal kangaroo courts. But we all know national security means the freedom of the embezzlers and thieves and the corrupt officials. Following the neo-liberal policies of the last period and all the embezzlements that have gone with it hundreds of thousands of children have been forced to abandon school, abandon all hopes of a future and live on the streets searching for for work. Millions of homeless youths have become victims to addiction and prostitution. Millions of workers have been made unemployed and the number of slums has increased manifold. Only last month there were 10 suicides. Privatization of hospitals, schools, universities and social services, the exorbitant prices of basic food stuff and fuel, imposition of short term contracts giving a free hand to employers and all the policies of the Islamic Republic of capital has forced toilers and workers into a state of destitution. Workers, teachers and other organizations have been protesting against these conditions for years. Every day we are

witnessing more protests. But the Islamic Republic thinks by arresting, imprisoning and torturing worker activists it can create an atmosphere of fear and horror and stop the protests. Right now scores of worker activists are in jail. Jafar Azimzadeh is one of those who in protest against this false charge and his imprisonment have been on hunger strike since the end of April (26 days ago). His life is in danger. Let us unite and rise up into urgent united action in support of Azimzadeh and other prisoners

Workers organisations, teachers and students,

Defend Azimzadeh whichever way you can by sending letters of protest, by demonstrating in front of parliament. Presidential palace and international institutions. Gather in public squares and organize pickets and demonstrations demanding his freedom. Ask for support of community organizations such as Families of Political Prisoners ... and take whatever initiative you can to spread the news and extend the protests. Let all the workers, teachers, students and women in every city organize united protests against government institutions such as courts, jails and government buildings.

Parties, Organizations and Revolutionaries

We must organize a wide ranging and urgent united actions. We must picket international bodies, Iranian embassies; we must gather in public squares and spread the news. We must try and raise support for Jafar Azimzadeh within the international workers movement. Let us build and strengthen workers solidarity. Let us understand the urgency of the situation. Time is running short.

Hugo Boss shareholders heard about the luxury fashion brand’s illegal treatment of union members in Turkey at the company’s annual general meeting in Stuttgart, Germany, today. Workers and government employees

continue strike

According to the paramilitary Basij force linked semi-official news agency in Iran, the Iranian regime's officials from different organizations and institutions have refrained to appear in front of demonstrating workers and people to answer their demands or to even respond to the needs of striking communities and sectors of the society. The chaotic and confused economic situation which has been the direct result of incalculable plunders by the regime officials, especially by government elites and the incompetency of the persons in charge have resulted in the closer of almost all industrial sectors and the soaring unemployment amongst workers. These workers are already living under the poverty line and once out of jobs their only source of income which would enable them to live would vanish. According to the news agency, the suffering people 'have so far taken part in many sit-ins and protest gatherings in front of the governor's office in the city of Yazd, central Iran. Among the protest gatherings in recent days, the chicken producing industry, truck drivers and company employees have been most noticeable. But the officials in the city of Yazd have refrained from appearing in person to answer their grievances despite calling themselves as labor supporters and those who defend the rights of workers. They didn't even bother to step out of their offices and to hear what those hundreds of people have to say.

media coverage. Over 107,000 potential Hugo Boss customers have signed a petition demanding that Hugo Boss respect workers’ rights. The longer these violations in Izmir continue, the greater the risk that the Hugo Boss brand will be damaged,” stated IndustriALL Organizing and Campaigns Director Adam Lee to the meeting. Of the 163 lawsuits for unfair dismissals since October 2011, the Turkish courts have sided with workers in 76 per cent of finalized cases. The Fair Labor Association (FLA), which Hugo Boss is affiliated to, also concluded in a January 2016 report that many of these dismissals were related to unionization efforts. Despite the court decisions and FLA report, Hugo Boss claims there are no problems in Izmir. “Hugo Boss has not changed its behaviour in Izmir. The company fired Suleyman Budak and Abdullah Satan late last year and Meryem Bicakci in March this year for their union activity. Bullying and harassment of union activists at the Hugo Boss factory in Izmir is as bad as it’s ever been,” Lee told shareholders.

In response, Hugo Boss CEO Mark Langer said that Hugo Boss respected and recognized Teksif and has invited the union to a stakeholders’ meeting. Earlier this week, Hugo Boss met Teksif in Istanbul but contrary to Hugo Boss’ claims at the shareholders’ meeting, no agreement has been reached. “Talking is not enough – we want actions not words,” said IndustriALL general secretary, Jyrki Raina. “Hugo Boss has failed to meet the commitments it’s made to us in the past and failed to reach an agreement with our trade union affiliate, Teksif. “We call on new Hugo Boss CEO Mark Langer to stop the intimidation and threats against union supporters inside the factory; to reinstate the sacked workers; and to work with IndustriALL and Teksif to resolve the illegal violations at their Izmir factory. We demand justice and respect for fundamental rights, particularly freedom of association.”

an 301 verstorbene Bergarbeiter gedacht
