Saudi Electricity Company signs ten contracts worth
total of $1.08bn
Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) has signed 10 contracts worth a total of $1.08bn (SAR 4.06 bn)
for projects across the Kingdom, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
The CEO of SEC Ziyad Muhammad Al-Sheeha, who signed the deals, said each of six of the
contracts involve the construction of one electricity transformer plant, four of which will be in
Wa’d Al-Shimal, Al-Gurayyat, Al-Jouf and Ar’ar in the Northern Frontier Region.
The fifth will be in Al-Khafji in the Eastern Province and the other in Al-Madhaya in Jazan.
Operation of the plants is expected to begin in 29 months from the date the contracts were
signed.
Another contract, which will be carried out within 30 months, involves the construction of a dual
overhead line with a voltage of 380 kilovolts (kV) between Bisha and east of Taif with a length of
201 kilometres. The construction of a 23-kilomtre asphalt road between the new eastern Taif
plant and the line near the Ministry of Defense is also part of the contract.
Two further contracts will see the construction of a dual overhead line with a voltage of 380kV
between Al-Jouf 2 and Ar’ar central plants and another 380kV overhead line linking Tabarjal and
Al-Jouf plants.
The final contract relates to the purchase of steam condensers in the 13th and 14th generating
plants in Riyadh. Each of the projects is designed to meet increasing electricity demand in the
country and boost economic development in the regions to which they relate.

Jeddah Metro details revealed
he presentation, given on behalf of Osama Abdouh of the Jeddah Metro Company and
entitled "The Jeddah Model: Integrated Public Transport Systems," highlighted the fact
that one of the aims of the project is to ease traffic by reducing dependency on cars for
getting around.
In March 2013, a ministerial decree was announced approving project
implementation with a total budget of SR45 billion. The decree also said that
the complete public transport master plan would take seven years to complete.
The completion of the project will lead to active and accessible public facilities, pedestrian-
friendly streets and neighborhoods, easy access to transit sites and higher land use density
adjacent to transit sites, among other advantages.
The project includes commuter trains, trams, metros with 72 stations spanning 152 km, marine
networks, ferries, and commuter, rapid and feeder buses. The tram network will be 48 km long
with 48 stations, while the commuter rail network will be 93 km long with 13 stations.
The marine network will be 94 km long with 17 stations, while the bus network will span 840 km
in one direction, with 2,950 bus stations and 814 buses. The project also includes the Al-
Muntalaq station and the Obhur Iconic Bridge.
The Obhur Iconic Bridge will be 74 meters wide and 51 meters high, with a clearance of 15.5
meters and a creek crossing length of 360 meters. The bridge will be 2 kilometers long. The
bridge will contain an orange metro line in the median and works will be inclusive of
interchanges.
The JMC has come up with a preliminary high-level plan to meet the seven-year deadline. The
key advantages of the decree include allowances to pre-qualify contractors to ensure that
specialized contractors are equally competitive. The decree also allows use of nonstandard
government contracts.

Spain's Tecnicas Reunidas awarded $1.7bn contract in
Saudi Arabia
écnicas Reunidas (TR) will develop the utilities and common area project within the Jazan
IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) complex in the Jazan Economic City,
located in Jazan Province, a south western region of Saudi Arabia.
The Jazan IGCC complex, which is to become the largest gasifier-based power facility in the
world, will convert vacuum residue to be produced in the adjacent Jazan refinery into synthesis
gas (syngas). TR is currently executing two large projects in the 400,000 bpd Jazan Refinery.
The gasification unit will have a capacity of 2,110,000 Nm3/h of syngas that will be evenly used
to produce purified hydrogen for the refinery and to fuel a combined cycle facility producing
utilities and power for the refinery and export to the national grid. Total output of the plant will
be of approximately 2,400 MW.

Saudi Arabia plans new pilgrimage airport at Taif
Saudi Arabia is planning to build a new international airport to serve pilgrims to Mecca in the
nearby city of Taif, its General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA) said on Thursday.
GACA is preparing a tender and will ask consortia of international and local companies to bid to
develop the airport, and aims to award a contract in the first half of 2015, spokesman Khaled al-
Khaibani said.
He said it will be developed on a build-operate-transfer basis, in which a developer finances the
construction and recoups its investment by operating the airport.
The airport will serve visitors for the annual haj, as well as umrah, a lesser pilgrimage to Mecca
which can be performed at any time of year. GACA's board approved the project on Wednesday
and is working with the International Financing Corporation, the consulting wing of the World
Bank, to help prepare the tender, the spokesman said.
Most of the several million haj pilgrims coming from abroad each year now arrive at a special
terminal in Jeddah's international airport, but others fly into Medina, the city where Islam's
founder established the first Muslim community. The existing airport at Taif serves domestic
flights.

Saipem wins two contracts worth $4bn
aipem has won four engineering and construction contracts, onshore in Saudi Arabia
and offshore in Brazil, for a total amount of approximately $4bn.
The company has been awarded three contracts by Saudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia for
onshore engineering and construction activities.
Two EPC contracts relevant to the Jazan Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle project are to be
located near the city of Jizan, in southwestern Saudi Arabia.
Package 1 contract comprises the gasification unit, the soot/ash removal unit, the acid gas
removal and the hydrogen recovery units. Package 2 contract includes six sulphur recovery unit
(SRU) trains and relevant storage facilities.
The scopes of work of both packages include engineering, procurement, construction, pre-
commissioning, assistance to commissioning and performance tests of the concerned facilities.
The two packages are part of the current Saudi Aramco development of the largest gasifier-based
power facility built in the world, adjacent to its new Jazan Refinery & Terminal project.
The power plant will be based on gasification technology and the primary
feedstock will be the vacuum residue produced in the refinery as well as high sulfur
fuel oil. The plant will serve the refinery power needs and export a large amount of
power to the national grid.
The Jazan Refinery and Terminal Project itself will provide more than 1,000 direct jobs in addition
to 4,000 indirect jobs.
Furthermore, Saudi Aramco has awarded to Saipem an EPC contract for the Loops 4 & 5 of the
Shedgum-Yanbu’ Gas Pipeline, linking Shedgum to Yanbu’ .
The scope of work of this third contract includes detailed design, engineering, procurement,
installation, commissioning and start up assistance for two pipelines, which will be completed in
the second half of 2017.
In Brazil, Petrobras has awarded to Saipem an EPCI contract for the Lula Norte, Lula Sul and Lula
Extremo Sul Project, to be developed in the Santos Basin Pre-Salt Region, approximately 300km
off the coasts of the Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo States.
