The District 1-4A MVP posted a 9-3 record with a 0.97 ERA and recorded 75 strikeouts in 79 2/3 innings. Benton made the quarterfinals as a No. 4 seed. COACH OF THE YEAR J.D. STEPHENS BENTON (28-9) Stephens led a consistent program in his first three seasons at Benton, making the 4A quarterfinals each season and winning 27-plus games. The Tigers aimed to break through to a state tournament, but Benton’s 2-1 record against Evangel this season and its third straight district title is noteworthy. PLAYER OF THE YEAR BRYANT BOWEN CAPTAIN SHREVE, SENIOR, CATCHER The Southern Miss signee batted over .500 for most of the season before his average dipped to .478, and the hits were usually significant. Of the District 1-5A MVP’s 54 hits, 32 went for extra bases, including a Gators single- season record of 25 doubles along with seven home runs. He led Captain Shreve to the playoffs as a No. 23 seed. DOUGLAS COLLIER/THE TIMES Aaron Sheppard of Benton is All-City Pitcher of the year. J.D. Stephens of Benton is coach of the year. Captain Shreve catcher Bryant Bowen is player of the year. SUBMITTED PHOTO SUBMITTED PHOTO SUBMITTED PHOTO PLAYER OF THE YEAR ALEX BOONE NORTH DESOTO, JR. A consistent force in the Griffins who hit for power (31 RBIs, 2 HR) and aver- age (.435). He led the Griffins to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs. He and running mate Hunter Speights (also a junior) will form arguably the most dangerous pair of bats in the area next season. PITCHER OF THE YEAR CAMERON GRAY LAKESIDE, SO. Gray is one of the best young arms in this corner of the state as he put together a 5-2 record with 1.09 ERA. He struck out 66 in 57 2/3 in- nings. Only nine of his 17 runs allowed were earned, and he walked only 13 bat- ters. Lakeside shared the District 1-2A title with Calvary and lost in the first round of the playoffs. COACH OF THE YEAR RICHARD PARTRIDGE FLORIEN In an area accustomed to having at least one state baseball champion, Partridge and the No. 2 seed Black- cats brought home the only state title. Florien (23-6) blasted through Class B by winning three of their five playoff games by nine runs or more, including the championship 10-1 over Fairview.
